Opis:
The recent studies on the relations between humanism or humanists and jurisprudence convince that Reneaissance, especially in XVIth century, when the national states began to raise, belonged to the periods of increased interest in the issue of law. Although Erasmus was not a layer, nor he introduced in any of his works a complete theory of law, he maintained close relations with many leading theoreticians of the law and jurists (Alciati, Budé, Cantiuncula, Zasius) and sometimes spoke in the legal discussions of his age. Among hist most important works concerning the matter of law were: Institutio principis Christiani, Ratio seu Methodus verae theologiae, Christiani matrimonii institutio, De interdicto esu carnium and Ecclesiastes. In the paper I’m going to concentrate on this latter work, in which Erasmus discusses the significance of preaching, preacher and widely understood Christian rhetoric. In the Ecclesiastes Erasmus touches the law subject with the special emphasis on historical character of law and relations between the divine law, the law of Christ and the law of Nature. After a short discussion about his understaning of law I will concentrate on the essential differentiation between the letter of law and the spirit of law, and I will point at proposed by Erasmus ways of introduction of law into human life. Erasmus, on the one hand, escaped a rigidity and abstraction of law and, on the other, he neutralised an aspect of the coercion of law. In his solution Erasmus appreciated the political dimension of preaching and acknowledged preacher as a more important guide of the people, than ruler. I’m going to interpret the Erasmian concept of preaching as an rhetorical mean of introduction of law in analogical way to “introduction” proposed by Plato in his Nomoi.

The following paper is dedicated to the topic of biblical motifs in Francesco Petrarca’s letters, which belong to an ubi leones sphere in historical literary research both in Poland and the whole of Europe. If we are to believe the modest and critical confessions made by Petrarca in his writings, the author of Canzoniere was rather slow in realising the importance of an in‑depth study of the Bible, and he regarded the awareness of this ignorance as gross negligence (damnosa tarditas), which made him blind for the inestimable value of the holy books. References to various biblical passus and pericopes in Familiares and Seniles are rarely used by Petrarca as purely elocutive ornaments or testimonies of his erudition, more frequently playing the role in the area of inventionis of an epistolary structure. From among all the biblical books, Petrarca most frequently and most willingly reached in his letters for The Book of Psalms, which he used (like Saint Augustine) in a very specific argumentation as an authoritative testimony of sapiential character. Biblical characters and motifs, as well as ‘winged words’, derived from prophetic books, the Gospels and Saint Paul’s letters are often found in Petrarca’s letters, which are deeply imbued with thoughts on ultimate matters, painful struggles with one’s own weaknesses, and a dramatical relationship between man and God.

Opis:
The process of mythologization of avifauna has been analyzed in order to study the relation between man and nature, and more precisely, between the Renaissance humanism and natural sciences. One issue is puzzling in this field – why did educated and well-read humanists mythologize nature, including the avifauna? Why did authors, for whom in principle criticism was an elementary indicator for perceiving reality, got rid of it so easily? 16th century authors with humanist education did not reconstruct nature but art, and they searched for its ideal in ancient works filled with mythologization of the nature. Humanist erudition required describing mythical animals and equally mythical symbolic of those animals. In this way one could prove that he knew ancient texts well. Reconstruction of such nature as it really existed was an attitude that was unworthy of a humanist artist. Hence the store of knowledge and ignorance that existed in those times was translated into a particular, often mythologized, text written by a Renaissance author.

Opis:
Francisco de  Peñalosa (c. 1470‒1528), who is considered to be the greatest and finest Spanish composer prior to Cristóbal de Morales, composed a significant number of the compositions which are mainly preserved in Tarazona 2/3 (copied between 1521 and 1528), the largest source of Iberian sacred music from the early sixteenth century. Among the Tarazona compositions there are four Lamentations, of which three are attributed to Peñalosa. His Lamentations appear to be the earliest Spanish polyphonic settings of Jeremiah poems whose authorship is known. Peñalosa’s Lamentations are slightly different from the others composed at that time. Written by a composer from the peninsula, they have at least a few characteristics typical for Spanish writing, which distinguishes them from other Lamentations found in Petrucci’s collection of 1506, and some others which resulted from his individual approach to the treatment of Jeremiah verses. By special treatment of the words of the Lamentations Peñalosa joined the broad group of the composers affected and inspired by the beauty of the poem and deep emotions which it expresses.  As a composer who was a maestro de musica and music teacher of the king’s grandson, Ferdinand, and who could have studied liberal arts and known Latin fluently, Peñalosa reveals himself as a creative artist, and a true and sensitive human being, as a person who was aware of what means to be a humanist.

In The Laments, apart from the drama of the father and the poet, we saw the drama of the sage unfolding. The motto of the poem, questions about the attitude of man in the face of his own suffering, the truth about the irrevocability and inevitability of suffering under the influence of misfortune, considerations about the inability of the human mind to penetrate God’s mysteries, the presence of the person and thoughts of Cicero in the poem, all these constitute the wisdom of The Laments. The wisdom was to be the basic principle of human existence, the practical and theoretical principle on which it was to be based. The idea that it is to be internal constancy, understood as immutability, as a kind of lack of internal reaction to the course of things, has been questioned. When the illusion of one’s own wisdom has been understood and rejected, new wisdom emerges. It is to be an internal submission to Providence, an internal transformation under the influence of experience, which cannot be avoided because it is true.

Opis:
The study is an analysis and interpretation of a scene from Łukasz Górnicki’s tragedy Troas (1589), a translation of Seneca’s Troades. A comparison to the original as well as the description of changes introduced by the translator serve to capture a special phenomenon of emphasising the analogy between Ulysses’s and a diplomat’s activity. Starting with the main character’s first line, the words: “durae minister sortis” were translated as “Ja, co poselstwo niosę”. The analysis of this issue shows that the role of Ulysses (who does not negotiate with a representative of a sovereign country, but with a captive woman) cannot be equated with the role of an ambassador. Conversely, it combines in itself the features characteristic of diplomatic staff of various ranks, including characters operating on the edge of the law. The consilium ascribed to Ulysses enables to explore the secret of Andromacha by observing physical symptoms of emotions. This makes it possible for Górnicki to define the main character’s ingenuity as “dowcip odwrócony na nice” which, irrespective of Seneca’s original, refers to the terminology used earlier in Dworzanin polski, where dowcip (wit) is the equivalent of ingegno. Among the ethical elements of Ulysses’s speeches one should name, above all, his desire to convince Andromacha to accept the Greek’s line of argumentation. This, in turn, provides good framework for parallelism with the New Testament (Lk 2:35). The last part of the work, devoted to pathos, addresses the problem of a mismatch between the role of Ulysses and diplomacy codes in Górnicki’s times. The main character does not limit himself to conducting well thought-out negotiations, but he also uses direct violence. Similar dissonance in character construction seems to make the representation of diplomatic practices in Górnicki’s translation a problematic task, given the socio-political tensions in Europe in the second half of sixteenth century.

The article presents the relationship between one of the main representatives of Italian humanism – Pietro Bembo – with Poles. The most important aspect was his friendship with Klemens Janicki who studied in Padua in 1538–1540. His works are a testimony of contacts he had established when in Italy. Bembo was mentioned in Janicki’s works (Variae Elegiae IX,Epigrammata LII). Another element connecting the Italian with Poles were congratulatory letters on his cardinal appointment. The newly-appointed cardinal was congratulated by king Sigismund the Old via enigmatic figures of Jan Wincenty Dulcis de Lasco and Piotr Kmita.A trace of Bembo’s contact with Poles is also the formal correspondence of his while being the secretary of Pope Leo X.
