Opis:
The religiosity of Polish youth is an important issue that deserves special attention. This fact is confirmed by the observation of new contemporary religious behaviours. The author set herself the goal of examining the level of religiosity among young people and learning how they assess the role of the family in shaping it. To do this, young people were studied for expressed declarative indicators: attitudes towards God, faith and the religious practices they engage in. The assumed goal is achieved and the answer to the questions that were formulated is included in the process of argumentation, which consists of introducing the problem through the analysis of religiosity and its structure, and then an analysis of the author’s own research indicating family determinants of the development of youth religiosity. Its results are similar to those of nationwide research indicating that it is the family, as the closest educational environment of young people, that has the greatest impact on their attitude to faith: it shapes the nature of religiosity, teaches observance of values and is responsible for the frequency of religious practices.

Opis:
In the present article we first draw the reader’s attention to the state and differentiation of religious practices in the Polish society, and next to some factors securing the stability of these practices. We conclude this discussion with a cautious sociological prediction concerning the Catholics’ involvement in cult practices in the future. The indication to a variety of determinants of continuity of religious practices in the Polish society shows how erroneous are the theses propagated by those Western sociologists who connect the high intensity of religious practices in Poland with the specific role of the Catholic Church in our country. Religious practices, including participation in the Sunday Holy Mass, do not constitute a full picture of believers’ religiousness. Participation in them – as social behavior – can be subjected not only to religious influences and effects, but also it may be a behavior that is the result of social norms and conventions inclining one to perform acts of religious cult even with weak religious motivation.

Opis:
Modern prisons are viewed in this paper as highly specific configurations, providing a critical infrastructure for the forging of a new relationship between subjects and the imperial state. The comparison of three rather different temporal and spatial practices of territorial incorporation makes it possible to describe the introduction of modern statehood in nineteenth century Poland and Lithuania as a long-term process, including a radically changed legal framework. It was accompanied by the ongoing codification of penal law by all three partitioning powers, which is outlined in the first part of this paper. The article offers a deep analysis of the establishment of new practices of incarceration in remote places (vis-à-vis the imperial capitals) as an inherent part of a changing relationship between centre and periphery within the Prussian, Russian and Habsburg Empires. They were among a broad range of new bureaucratic practices fostering the territorialisation of statehood. By enlarging the presence of selected actors in remote parts of the Central European Empires, they established a direct and bidirectional relationship between the representatives of the state and its subjects. By analysing the way in which the partitioning powers re-used monasteries as infrastructures for the introduction of new penal practices in the early nineteenth century, this article offers a better understanding of the long-term structural changes. A two-step argumentation follows the functional logic of the relationship between religious spaces designed for introspection and spaces for solitary confinement. As a consequence of the reform discourse, new prison complexes were erected in the second half of the nineteenth century. They produced a highly institutionalized and structured space for the reconfiguration of the relationship between the subject and the state. An ideal version of this relationship was described in normative documents, such as prison instructions. In analysing them, this article focuses on the state-led implementation of religious practices, as they played a major role in the redesign of this relationship following the establishment of new prison complexes.

Opis:
Faith and religious commitment endure as the distinguishing features of Poles when compared with other countries in Europe. However, these traits also been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Due to the limitations that accompanied Poles as the pandemic unfolded, traditional participation in religious practices could not always match the same scale and extent from before the pandemic. Consequently, some discontinued or reduced their religious involvement, while others would look for alternative forms of participation in religious practices, e.g. via radio, television or the Internet. Based on the results of quantitative research (CAWI) carried out using an online panel during the second (N = 1,072) and third wave of the pandemic (N = 1,080), the paper sets out to answer the following questions: (1) how has the religiosity of Poles changed during the pandemic?; (2) have Poles participated in religious practices via television, radio and internet?; (3) do Poles treat television, radio and online religious practices as an alternative to traditional religiosity?

Opis:
Medieval Hanseatic merchants travelled to many places around Europe. It sounds trivial, but the fact that they were foreigners outside their own city-walls, caused many problems, i.a. in regard to their integration in the religious landscape abroad. To begin with, the following article shortly outlines the conditions of the pratique réligieuse of foreigners in the Orbis Catholicus. It shows what rules governed the life and death of foreigners in the religious sense, how and where Hanseatic merchants were allowed to attend masses, to confess and to take the holy communion; it also reveals what laws applied in the case of death in regard to the last unction and the burial. Secondly, the ways Hanseatic merchants handled different situations abroad were analysed. One may indicate their own chronological and geographical dimensions; the questions of power are also touched upon. It was stated that the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 constituted a turning point, because it made the parish become a stable institution. Prior to 1215, merchants had been able to take their own priest with them or to establish their own churches abroad, as they were also later able to do this outside of the Orbis Catholicus. Nevertheless, after 1215 they had to adjust to the conditions inside the Catholic world, which made them adopt different approaches. If they were powerful enough, they could get their own parish churches or parish rights, like it was in the case of Visby, Riga, Bergen or the Scanian Fairs. Yet, it created new problems. If they were not powerful enough to have their own standing, they were integrated into the existing parishes abroad. There they tried to distinguish themselves by creating their own symbols or chapels inside the parish churches. However, it also caused complications, e.g. in the case of confession. How to confess and to get the absolution when the confessor did not understand the penitent? Mendicant orders could fill the gap, but this solution created even more problems. By taking a closer look at various areas of the Hanseatic trade, from Novgorod and Polotsk to London and Bruges, this article shows, in a more systematic manner, different solutions of the problems caused by ecclesiastical law and practical life. In the end, it can be shown that Hanseatic merchants abroad constituted an integral part of the sacred landscape of these foreign places, not only by using it, but also by actively shaping it. In this way, they were no longer foreigners abroad, but fratres Christiana.

This article explores global bazaars run by migrants in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. Socialist and post-socialist mobilities have made a fundamental contribution to the establishment of new trading centres since the collapse of communism. Marketplaces change over time and are shaped by migration regimes, neo-liberalism and increasing cultural diversity. In bazaars we can study how diversity and economy mutually impact each other. I argue that post-socialist migrations have contributed to cultural diversity, thereby promoting the creation of new marketplaces, while everyday encounters in these localities result in conflict and/or solidarity among various groups. These processes are embedded in state regulations and are affected by the spatiality of bazaars in CEE urban surroundings. I conclude by focusing on religious diversity in the CEE bazaars, as cross-border religious practices not only help migrants to cope with social and economic hardships but also generate global interconnectedness.

Opis:
The matter of discussion in this article is family’s subject and religiousness of their children, especially the attitude to faith of the youngest members of family. The main purpose of research was to establish outlook of Polish youth to religion and family’s influence on creating religiousness. The research project created a questionnaire with 39 questions of different sort, included in this document. That was prepared by students within doctorates classes. Within the scope of research students recognized the following variables: sex, class, type of school and what is most important – attitude to faith and religious practices. The results of the studies are similar to the nationwide; we can definitely state that family, as the closest environment of young people, has the biggest influence on their relation with faith. Actually, family forms the character of religion, teaches young people how to obey values and it is responsible for observing religious practices. The weakness of faith, noticed in Polish youth, has been shown by negative perception of church as an institution.
