Opis:
This paper deals with the performance assessment of a textile industry, namely African Textile Manufactures (ATM) Ltd., in Chalawa, Kano industrial estate, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The entire system ATM has different sections of machines for processing various assignments. The machines in the sections have diverse capabilities. We assumed the following subsystems: spinning, weaving, pretreatment, printing, and steaming. The failure rates of subsystems are constant, and they follow exponential distribution, while the repairs follow two types of distributions, namely general distribution and Gumbel–Hougaard family copula distribution. The system analyzed by employing supplementary variable and the Laplace transform. Various measures of reliability have been computed for differential values of failures and two types of repair. The conclusions and some recommendations are addressed to improving the management of ATM.

Opis:
In this paper, a new Poisson area-biased Ailamujia distribution has been formulated to analyse count data. It was created by combining two distributions: the Poisson and areabiased Ailamujia distributions, using the compounding technique. Several distributional properties of the formulated distribution were studied. Its ageing characteristics were determined and expressed explicitly. A variety of diagrams were used to demonstrate the characteristics of the probability mass function (pmf) and the cumulative distribution function (cdf). The parameter of the developed model was estimated by employing the maximum likelihood estimation approach. Finally, two data sets were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the investigated distribution.

Opis:
Based on Kalman filtering, multi-sensor navigation systems, such as the integrated GPS/INS system, are widely accepted to enhance the navigation solution for various applications. However, such integrated systems do not always provide robust and stable navigation solutions due to unmodelled measurements and system dynamic errors, such as faults that degrade the performance of Kalman filtering for such integration. Single fault detection methods based on least squares (snapshot) method were investigated extensively in the literature and found effective to detect the fault at either sensor level or integration level. However, the system might be contaminated by multiple faults simultaneously. Thus, there is an increased likelyhood that some of the faults may not be detected and identified correctly. This will degrade the accuracy of positioning. In this paper multiple fault test and reliability measures based on a snapshot method were implemented in both the measurement model and the predicted states model for use in a GPS/INS integration system. The influences of the correlation coefficients between fault test statistics on the performances of the faults test and reliability measures were also investigated. The results indicate that the multiple fault test and reliability measures can perform more effectively in the measurement model than the predicted states model due to weak geometric strength within the predicted states model.

Opis:
Effective and efficient maintenance is essential to ensure reliability of a ship's main propulsion system, which in turn is interdependent on the reliability of a number of associated sub- systems. A primary step in evaluating the reliability of the ship's propulsion system will be to evaluate the reliability of each of the sub- system. This paper discusses the methodology adopted to quantify reliability of one of the vital sub-system viz. the lubricating oil system, and development of a model, based on Markov analysis thereof. Having developed the model, means to improve reliability of the system should be considered. The cost of the incremental reliability should be measured to evaluate cost benefits. A maintenance plan can then be devised to achieve the higher level of reliability. Similar approach could be considered to evaluate the reliability of all other sub-systems. This will finally lead to development of a model to evaluate and improve the reliability of the main propulsion system.

Opis:
Today huge capacity sea-going vessels are propelled by mega high-powered marine diesel engines, referred to as Main Engine. Turbocharging system is an integral part of large marine diesel engine plant, contributing to their safety, reliability, and efficiency. Defects in the turbocharging system could result in higher fuel consumption, erratic running of the Main Engine, and in the worst scenario may result in the stoppage of the Main Engine at sea. An inefficient turbocharging system may also cause major damage to turbochargers, resulting in undesirable accidents out at sea. To avoid such undesirable accidents and ensure smooth operations of the Main Engine, it is required to address this concern. The aim of this research is to study the turbocharging system for a large Main Engine using a Kongsberg engine simulator. Various malfunction of the Turbocharging system is considered, relevant data is collected and analysed. Moreover, a Fault Tree Analysis, (FTA) is considered to identify the top undesirable event which is the failure of the Main Engine. Based on the results of this study, various steps are suggested to avoid failure of the Main Engine due to the defective turbocharging system.

Opis:
Merchant shipping has undergone a great transformation over the past three decades. The shipping market is highly competitive, which coupled with high crewing and fuel costs, leads to high operational costs. One of the paramount factor involved in vessel operation is the Maintenance cost and there is a dire need to keep this cost to a minimum. Fortunately the earlier policy of repair only maintenance in commercial shipping has been done away with, and was replaced by the policy of preventive maintenance. Planned Maintenance System was introduced by ship management companies in the early 90’s. Planned Maintenance offered benefits over the repair only policy, but has its own demerits. Many a time machinery equipment is opened up for routine maintenance after a specified time interval, irrespective of the need. This could lead to potential failures, which is explained by the fact that preventive maintenance resulted in meddling of a well set piece of machinery equipment, leading to its subsequent failure. This is where Condition based maintenance or CBM steps into prominence. CBM monitors the health of the machinery equipment, analyses the condition and helps you in decision making. The Main Propulsion system forms the heart of a vessel and we need to ensure its reliability, together with the reliability of its associated sub-systems. The entire system can be represented by reliability block diagrams, to show the interdependence of various components comprising the system. This helps in the decision making process of CBM whereby ship’s engineer may decide to stop the running machinery equipment, open and overhaul the same, else postpone the overhaul for a later safe date.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of research using Monte Carlo simulation, which aim was to assess various aspects of the risk associated with operation of the wastewater treatment plant. First part of the research included modeling of wastewater treatment plant effluent quality (using BOD5 as the example and assuming log-normal distribution of the variable) together with inspection results (check of compliance with fixed standards). Monte Carlo simulations of annual operational cycles of the plant allowed for creation of nomographs showing relations between coefficient of reliability (ratio of mean value of BOD to the fixed standard), coefficient of variation (ratio of standard deviation to mean value of variable) and reliability of the plant (expressed as probability of effluent concentration lower than fixed standard) as well as risk of the negative inspection result (probability that number of inspected samples that do not comply with required quality of the effluent is greater than fixed standard). Using such nomographs plant operator can evaluate for example the target mean value of effluent concentration to achieve required reliability and acceptable risk. Another part of the study included simulation of the water quality in the river after the discharge of wastewater. Using static model of pollutants budget in a mixed water (river + wastewater) and implementing random values of variables into the model (according to Monte Carlo simulation rules) the variations of river water quality were observed. It was found that although mean values of variables (among them quality and quantity of the discharge) result in good mixed river water quality, the probability of temporary degradation of river quality is significantly high. The results of simulation show that capacity of the river to accept pollutants load should be taken into account together with predicted variations in wastewater discharges, when establishing rules for water disposal in the river basin.

The article presents an idea of modernisation of a diesel locomotive power unit load control using SM31 locomotive. In the proposed solution an electronic rotations and power governor of a8C22W diesel engine is applied, developed in cooperation with Lokel (the Czech Republic) and Newag S.A. (Poland), in which a new optimal operational characteristic is realized in the locomotive. This characteristic was selected following optimization calculations using a mathematical model mapping the real conditions of the motor-generator work in a diesel engine. Test stand experimental investigations together with an over three-year supervised observation of the locomotive equipped with the electronic governor have proved its correct and reliable operation. Based on the data collected in supervised observation the efficiency of the proposed solution has been assessed, supported by an LCC (Life Cycle Cost) analysis.

ASTM and ACI methods were used to determine the water absorption and impact resistance of M30 grade concrete containing different percentages of sintered fly ash aggregate (SFA) ranging from 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. In the concrete laboratory, the parameters of the concrete mix, including fresh density, slump value, dry density, compressive strength, and impact resistance, were determined. The fresh and dry densities of concrete mix decrease as the quantity of SFA used as substitute increases. The 100% substitution of SFA in concrete results in a slump value of 200 mm, a fresh density of 1946 kg/m3, a dry density of 1911 kg/m3, and water absorption of 3.5%, with a compressive strength of 12.3 MPa. For the drop weight impact resistance test, reliability analysis was conducted to determine the level of reliability of each concrete mix for varying SFA. Using reliability analysis, the failure analysis owing to impact load determined the energy absorption of the concrete mix.

The analysis of the field of application of gripper is carried out. Are allocated perspective areas of development of a robotics. The main difficulties in the application of kinematic schemes for gripping devices with rotary finger movement are described. The prospective application of the kinematic scheme of the gripper with a straight-parallel plane-parallel motion of the fingers is proved when manipulating an object of the "shaft" type. A new scheme of a gripper with a rectilinear plane-parallel finger movement is presented. Its design is simpler and cheaper than known devices of this type. The capability of the gripper design in the engineering analysis environment has been fulfilled. Numerous computer studies of both individual design elements and pairs of objects that are in interaction have confirmed the operability of the developed design. It is established that the frictional force in the mobile components of the gripper design is insignificant, which will not create the prerequisites for a significant increase in size.

Opis:
New systems are produced and developed to meet specific needs, and their reliability is the most important issue. In the maritime industry, evaluating failures in a ship’s propulsion system results in high costs and the loss of prestige for the company. Land/sea fleet employees need to detect and minimize the failures that may occur in ship propulsion systems in advance to ensure the continuity of the ships’ operations. In this study, the recorded failure data of four different ships belonging to a fleet in the last 10 years are used. Failures were examined as a whole since the ships have similar propulsion systems. The obtained failure data were grouped, and the average time to fix the failures was determined by the chief engineer and made suitable for reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis. A suitable model was created for grouped failures by Isograph’s RWB software. As a result of the analysis of the propulsion system and its subsystems, the main engine of the ship was shown to have the best reliability. Furthermore, the most important components were the cylinders of the main engine as subsystems. This study highlights the components that are important to the reliability of a propulsion system. Thanks to the RAM analysis, improvements can be pinpointed on a ship’s propulsion system, which will increase the operations of the maritime industry. Reducing failures will further increase the confidence in maritime transport and strengthen its place among the modes of transportation. This study provides a valuable resource for academicians, experts, as well as companies working on reliability, availability, and maintainability in the future.

Opis:
A high number of examples in today’s global industry prove that it is difficult to ensure a certain level of quality. One possible reason is the increasing complexity of modern mechatronic product systems. Interface problems due to several involved science disciplines and the lack of understanding subsystems, which are delivered by different suppliers, make it difficult to identify critical components and specifications of elements. Furthermore, it is even harder to estimate the effects of elements because of their unknown dependencies and relations. Therefore it becomes more and more improbable to develop a safe, sustainable and high quality product right from the beginning. In order to understand failures in complex system structures today’s engineering industries need a generic approach that increases the understanding of systems, identifies critical components and considers the different levels of a system. It shall examine failures that cause system errors but also failures that limit system functions. Thus, it is necessary to model and simulate the causally failure chains and analyse over several system levels and elements with their dependencies. This leads to a better understanding of the whole picture of cause and effect. This research paper points out which requirements this new model-based approach has to fulfill and how it is possible to link quality and reliability methods to achieve an overall understanding and analysis of a complex system to assure high quality and sustainability.

A novel methodology is presented for condensation in power generation plants; this section is the main intersection of heat loss, typically 40% thermal efficiency of a plant. Condensate section is interfaced with the generating section to enhance the active contribution of the system. Both the cooling section and the condensate section are integrated and interfaced through the low-pressure and high-pressure cycles to attain the improved electrical efficiency, which affects the heat transfer capability of the power generation plants. This paper proposess a Cooling-cum-Condensate-Extraction System (CCES), to dedicate a 36-MW- captive power plant. The paper is dedicated for the design and development of an effective CCES, analyzing its impact over the systems in terms of system reliability optimization, and the role of real-time optimization.
