The article concerns a story about the country doctor and begins, it would seem, in the very typical circumstances of everyday life. The doctor is called to the patient who allegedly needs urgent aid. In the final scene, this doctor, when in need, exposed to frost of “unhappy age”, wandering astray “with an earthly vehicle, unearthly horses”, has nobody to rescue him. The author’s aim is to prove that the complexities of the language in this story, contributing to its special, barely penetrable atmosphere, are an artistic device used by Franz Kafka.

The history of so-called ‘linguistic relativity’ is an odd and multifaceted one. After knowing alternate fortunes and being treated by different academic branches, today there are some new ways of investigating the language-thought-reality problem that (i) put into dialogue the latest trends in language-related disciplines (ii) generate room for philosophical themes previously overlooked, (iii) reassess the very idea of linguistic relativity, despite its popularized versions which have circulated for decades and which have led an otherwise fruitful debate to extremes. It is argued that a multidisciplinary approach is desirable in order to broaden future research. In the last few years the opportunity to study this matter following a common trend in several disciplines has been created. Language, and cognition too, are now conceived as intrinsically social phenomena. It is argued that relativistic effects should be investigated in social realms, and that analytic philosophy could help with this task.

Andrzej Dragan’s book Quantechism or a cage for people is a great popular science book to start a fascinating adventure with the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. It is written in an easy language, does not require from the reader a deep knowledge of contemporary physical issues, while describing, illustrating and explaining them very well. Instead, it requires broader historical knowledge and at least basic philosophical knowledge for verification, helping to bring out what is most valuable in the book. Unfortunately, the book, while popularizing science, also makes a terrible mess and does a lot of damage to the deeper understanding of physics, its history, and the meaning and function of philosophy and religion. And so it can become an attractive and appealing, but nevertheless a trap-cage for thinking people.

Opis:
The Theory of Relativity from Einstein starts from some everyday system of Cartesian space- coordinates plus a linear time-parameter, read from a good old grand-father’s clock. The theory then contemplates a group of certain homogeneous, linear transformations with constant coefficients, transformations which involve all four coordinates and which there is reason to interpret as going over the another inertial systems, that moves with constant translational velocity with respect to the first. In fact the very backbone of the theory is that all laws of nature shall be the same for every frame reached in this way, including the original one from which we started, there should be no difference or distinction in principle between all these inertial frames, any one of which can be reached from any other one by a transformation of that group a so called Lorentz-transformation. In short, all laws of nature are assumed to be invariant to Lorentz- transformation.

The newest research confirms the ‘weak’ version of the linguistic relativity hypothesis, according to which the language we speak influences to some extent the way we think. At the same time, it has been shown that the conceptual representations of reality which have been shaped by the mother tongue from birth play a significant role while using an L2 (L3 etc.), especially when it is weaker than the L1. The present article describes one such conceptual domain – the (non-linguistic) categorization of objects according to their perceived gender, which is influenced by the grammatical gender of their names.

Presidential elections, by their nature, provoke fierce debates. During the 2017 French campaign the heated exchange between C. Angot and F. Fillon attracted public attention: that “clash” was making a “buzz”. Our attention was first caught by the terminology recurrently used by the media: in which ways are “clashes” and “buzzes” different from but also similar to old rhetorical mechanisms? And, more specifically, would New Rhetoric’s sensitivity to historical relativity shed some light on the issue? At first, we assumed that, polemic being a typical argumentative situation, there was no incompatibility between that theoretical framework and the study of a concrete polemical exchange. Of course, New Rhetoric doesn’t focus on polemical exchanges; we do, however, share Nicolas’ unease at saying that Perelman idealizes philosophical agreement (e.g. Nicolas, 2015a, § 7). After addressing that issue and the ambivalence of Perelman’s position, we will say a few words about the end / consequence distinction.

In the course of the development of physics until the beginning of the twentieth century there was an evolutionary progress within its ontological frameworks. Its continuity was violated by A. Einstein’s works of 1905 and his so-called „quantum and relativistic revolution.” In its course people gave up a series of results they had achieved, and replaced them by some radical solutions that differed from common sense intuitions. In particular, in the context of the theory of relativity the concept of electromagnetic ether was rejected. Then the concept of absolute time and absolute geometry of space were removed, facts that eliminated the „flow” of time and change of the ontology of physics from the substantialist one into the eventist one. The changes turned out unnecessary, they resulted not from the very theory of relativity, but from some arbitrary solutions within the frameworks of its philosophical interpretation. On the other hand, they clash with clear ontological intuitions and make an explanation of the „flow” of time impossible. What is more, they are also not beneficial for a further progress in the development of physics, especially in the context of seeking a quantum theory of gravitation. It seems right to return to pre-relativistic concepts, starting from ether. For it is the elimination of the latter that had started the „revolution.”

This paper presents the role of the empirical factor in E.A. Milne’s hypothetico-deductivist cosmology. Two contexts of the constructing of his theory are analysed: the context of discovery and the context of justification. It is shown that in the first one empirical data (recession of the galaxies and Hubble’s law) inspired him to investigate the cosmological problem of the phenomenon of the expanding Universe and influenced him to put forward the hypotheses: uniform velocities of fundamental particles, Cosmological Principle, and Lorentz transformation. Milne emphasised that in the procedure of justification the completed theoretical cosmological models should be tested. The empirical factor plays the most significant role in this procedure because the empirical data are the ultimate basis for confirmation or falsification of the cosmological models.

This article seeks to show that E.A. Milne’s philosophy of science has its roots in the philosophy of Aristotle and it could be an inspiration for Popper’s philosophy. The similarities with Aristotle’s concept are as follows: 1) the aim of science is to explain phenomena by discovering general principles; 2) the mind is responsible for discovering them, although experience guides the search; 3) deducing detailed statements from general assumptions is the most important element of research. On the other hand, Milne’s proposal is consistent with Popper’s main ideas: 1) criticism of the principle of induction; 2) preference for the hypothetical-deductive method (assumptions should be bold hypotheses that require empirical testing to be accepted); 3) appreciation of falsification and confidence in the effectiveness of deductive logic.
Artykuł jest próbą wykazania, że E.A. Milne’a filozofia nauki ma swoje źródła w filozofii Arystotelesa i mogła stanowić inspirację dla Popperowskiego hipotetyzmu. O zgodności z koncepcją Arystotelesa świadczą następujące jej cechy: 1) celem nauki jest wyjaśnianie zjawisk przez odkrywanie ogólnych zasad; 2) istotną rolę w ich odkrywaniu spełnia umysł, choć doświadczenie ukierunkowuje poszukiwania; 3) dedukowanie szczegółowych twierdzeń z ogólnych założeń jest najważniejszym elementem badań. Z drugiej strony propozycja Milne’a jest zgodna z głównymi ideami koncepcji Poppera: 1) krytyką zasady indukcji; 2) preferowaniem metody hipotetyczno-dedukcyjnej (założenia mają charakter śmiałych hipotez i są akceptowane na podstawie wyników testów empirycznych); 3) docenieniem falsyfikacji i przekonaniem o skuteczności logiki dedukcyjnej.

At the first stage of setting up Kinematical Relativity, Milne modified Einstein’s Principle of Relativity and assumed that the Universe had to appear the same to all observers. He called this an “Extended Principle of Relativity”. In order to specify this postulate, Milne defined the notion of the “equivalence of observers,” and then formulated a new definition of the Principle of Relativity: all descriptions of the whole system made by equivalent observers must be identical. Under Freundlich’s influence he called it the “Cosmological Principle” (CP). The content of Milne’s CP was different from both Einstein’s Principles of Relativity and the uniformity postulate of Relativistic Cosmology. Notwithstanding this, the adherents of the latter adopted this name for the isotropy and homogeneity postulate. Initially, Milne treated CP as a hypothesis about matter distribution. But when he separated model constructing from verifying to what extent it corresponded with the actual Universe, he began to emphasize that CP is not a law of nature, but a definition of the research domain.
