Opis:
The subject of the article concerns road embankments made of reinforced soil. The results of the analysis of the effectiveness of the reinforcement of these structures as a function of selected variable factors concerning the soil medium and the parameters of reinforcement inserts are given. The efficiency analysis was carried out on the basis of measurements of the horizontal unit pressure made on a physical model of a soil massif with a vertical wall of reinforced soil. The large-scale model was constructed on a laboratory scale. The article ends with a summary containing conclusions of a cognitive and practical nature.

Opis:
Asimple approach to estimate sidewall friction in reinforced soil model experiments conducted in parallel-sided test boxes with unlubricated walls is proposed. Analytical solutions are developed for reinforced soil slopes and retaining walls subjected to self-weight or external loading. It turns out that the frictional effect depends on the shape of the failure zone and the value of friction coefficient between soil and a sidewall material. The theoretical predictions were verified in laboratory experiments in a test box with lubricated and unlubricated sidewalls. It was shown that the method can be used to estimate sidewall friction not only under failure conditions, but also under all stages of surcharging prior to failure.

Opis:
The publication considers reinforced soil in relation to the construction of retaining walls in communication construction. The basic elements determining the cooperation of reinforcement inserts with the ground centre are discussed, depending on the features characterizing the components of the composite. The method and selected results of tests performed on a massif model with a vertical wall made of non-cohesive ground have been presented. A calculation example is given concerning the internal dimensioning of the reinforcement of the considered massif model, assuming the work of inserts without slipping in the ground centre. The concept of reinforcement co-operation indicator with the ground centre was introduced and a dependence to calculate its value was developed. The values of co-operation indicators: general and partial, concerning individual measurement levels of the model have been presented appropriately.

The issue of distortion and load bearing capacity of non-cohesive, monogenic and two layer soil, with vertical reinforcement, was analyzed. Separate inserts, single, double, triple and complex were used. Resistance parameters, in function of their characteristics, referring to reinforcement inserts, were evaluated. Soil base bearing capacity was calculated, on the basis of the research results of large size physical models distortion state, constructed on laboratory scale.

Opis:
Failures that occurred in the last few decades highlighted the need to raise awareness about the emergent risk related to the impact localised degradation phenomena have on embankments. Common interventions aimed to improve embankments, such as the reconstruction of the damaged area or the injection of low-pressure grouts to fill fractures and burrows, may cause the weakening of the structure due to discontinuities between natural and treated zones. Moreover, since such repair techniques require huge volumes of materials, more sustainable solutions are encouraged. At the same time, the textile and fashion industries are looking for sustainable waste management and disposal strategies to face environmental problems concerned with the voluminous textile waste dispatched to landfills or incinerators. The use of soil mixed with textile waste in embankment improvement has been investigated to identify an effective engineering practice and to provide a strategy for the circular economy of textiles. Preliminary laboratory tests have been conducted on soil specimens collected from the Secchia River embankment, Northern Italy, to define the appropriate mixture proportions and to compare physical properties and hydro-mechanical behaviour of natural and treated soils. The results show that an appropriate fibre content offers manageable and relatively homogeneous mixtures. The indluence on soil consistency is mainly due to the textile fibre hydrophilic nature. The addition of fibres reduces the maximum dry density and increases the optimum water content. At low stress levels, the compressibility and hydraulic conductivity appear higher, however macro voids produced during sample preparation may alter the findings.

Opis:
The subject of the article concerns the problem of estimating the location of a slip line in a massif with a vertical retaining wall made of reinforced soil, in which the limit state of active pressure was induced. The task is solved experimentally, on the basis of measured unit strains in the reinforcement inserts, with the use of electrofusion strain gauges. The inserts are located in horizontal layers. The slip curve is formed by the points where the maximum normal stresses occur in the reinforcement inserts. This curve cuts off the fragment wedge that is being sought from the plane of the retaining wall. The slip line divides the area of the massif into two zones: active (splinter wedge) and passive, in which the reinforcement inserts are anchored. The test stand is presented, the technique of measuring the deformation of the reinforcement and the method of estimating the location of the slip surface are discussed.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono metodykę postępowania zgodną z Eurokodem 7 i wskazówkami EBGEO przy analizowaniu stateczności wewnętrznej ścian oporowych z gruntu zbrojonego geosyntetykiem.
This paper presents a design methodology in accordance with Eurocode 7 and EBGEO’s recommendations when analysing the internal stability of geosynthetic-reinforced soil retaining walls. Every step was thoroughly presented, considering the example as very helpful in designing such retaining constructions by engineers. The calculation were carried out with the use of classical method and GEO5 software. It was shown that the application of EBGEO calculation methodology and GEO5 programme methodology lead to similar levels of the retaining wall’s safety. GEO5 programme can be successfully used for designing the geosyntheticreinforced retaining walls.

Opis:
The geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) system finds applications in numerous geotechnical projects, including retaining walls, road and railway embankments, slope stability structures, landfill structures, etc. This is attributed to its ability to enhance soil bearing capacity while minimizing deformations. Over the recent decades, extensive research has been conducted to comprehensively understand the behavior of GRS systems. In our research, we initially validate two laboratory tests using finite element (FE) modeling and conduct a parametric study. Our findings demonstrate that increasing the stiffness of layers from the bottom to the top of the wall significantly reduces wall displacements, approaching a state where all layers have uniform stiffness. Additionally, we investigate the plastic zone and the length of geogrids in each layer. Our results indicate that reducing the length of layers from top to bottom, similar to the plastic zone shape, does not impact displacements and forces within the layers. Simultaneously increasing stiffness with height and decreasing geogrid layer lengths within the plastic zone reduces the cost of GRS wall construction.

Green-geo-engineering with geosynthetic reinforced soil structures is of increasing practice around the world. Poland is among the leading countries with the third biggest geogrid market in Europe. The German EBGEO 2010 Guideline for Soil Reinforcement with Geosynthetics as first European Guideline for Geosynthetics linked to the Eurocode 7, and the new design code for Japanese railway structures under seismic loading are introduced. New research results from the Geotechnical Institute of the RWTH Aachen, Germany, dealing with the soil/reinforcement interaction and new approaches for design codes for the reinforcement of base courses in traffic areas based on lab and field tests in the USA are presented.
