Opis:
A chain of carbonate platforms evolved in the northern Neo-Tethys during the Late Jurassic, but current knowledge remains incomplete as long as data from several larger regions, such as the Western Caucasus, are not included. In order to fill this gap, it is here suggested to reconsider the information accumulated chiefly during Soviet times. Although these data are too general, they still matter with regard to some regional characteristics and tentative interpretations. Available data on the spatio-temporal distribution of Bajocian-Callovian sedimentary rocks are summarised in a novel way which permits documentation of depositional trends at six representative localities in the Western Caucasus. The extent of the carbonate platform increased at two localities since the Late Callovian and at a third since the Middle Oxfordian. Three additional sites were characterised either by non-deposition or deep-marine sedimentation. The onset of carbonate platform development marked a remarkable shift from chiefly siliciclastic to carbonate deposition, although this event was not sudden everywhere. The Bathonian pulse of tectonic activity, coupled with the eustatic sea level rise, allowed shelves to expand during the Callovian-Oxfordian, with a reduction in siliciclastic input from islands and seawater that became well oxygenated and warmer. These conditions were conducive to biogenic carbonate production, allowing the carbonate platform to expand subsequently.

Opis:
Interpretation of the regional high-resolution seismic data of the PolandSPANTM survey in the Grudziądz-Polik area revealed a new depositional architecture of the Upper Cretaceous succession that differs substantially from the previously assumed layer-cake model, commonly applied to Permian-Mesozoic sequences. A previously unrecognized regional unconformity, dividing the Upper Cretaceous succession into two units characterized by very different internal geometries, was identified and mapped. The lower unit, with a generally layer-cake internal pattern, is overlain by an upper unit composed of a regionally low-angle succession that pinches out toward the south. This newly revealed regional pattern remained unrecognized in previous regional compilations based on borehole data, which suggested that a layer-cake depositional architecture prevailed throughout the entire Upper Cretaceous. This new image of Upper Cretaceous depositional patterns has far-reaching consequences for understanding of the evolution of the Polish Basin in the Late Cretaceous, including its subsidence and burial history, deposition, and tectonic development. A re-evaluation of the chronostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous of the Polish Basin is needed to temporally constrain the succession of sedimentary and tectonic events revealed here.

Opis:
Discussion on the tectonic regional subdivision of Poland is a good opportunity to show a range of geological information of each tectonic unit and to emphasize the necessity of improvement of geological tectonic classifications, application of which in the geological databases is essential for correct usage of data collected. A good example is a geological and geophysical database PITAKA developed in the Polish Oil and Gas Company from 1987. Actually the PITAKA database contains data from 3191 boreholes which drilled Permian and younger deposits and from 4555 boreholes pierced into the older rocks. This paper presents location of 2D and 3D seismic studies done in digital technology from its introduction in Poland in 1973. In the Polish Lowlands area the Fore-Sudetic Monocline is the best geologically recognized region. The Pomeranian Anticlinorium and the Szczecin-Gorzów Synclinorium are relatively well documented. Numerous boreholes and seismic sections in those areas are associated with intensity of exploration of raw material deposits such as hydrocarbons, coal, copper, zinc and lead, sulfur and salts. Until now the PITAKA database does not contain all drilling data from Poland but it is constantly extended and supplemented.

Opis:
In contrast to dramatic losses of the Atrypida and Pentamerida at the Frasnian–Famennian boundary, the Rhynchonellida demonstrated relatively high rate of survival, and recolonized vacated benthic ecospace after the F–F extinction events. The Late Devonian evolution of rhynchonellid faunas from the East European Platform shows three distinctive periods of their mass appearance. High abundance of rhynchonellids is characteristic for early–middle Frasnian (Palmatolepis transitans–Pa. punctata zones) and early Famennian (Pa. crepida Zone). Invasion of taxonomically diverse and rich rhynchonellid faunas usually corresponds to the major transgressive episodes, whereas decline coincides with regressive conditions of the basin. Rhynchonellid assemblages were replaced in the late Frasnian (Late Pa. hassi–Pa. linguiformis zones) by theodossiid− and cyrtospiriferid−dominated assemblages, which occupied habitats in newly expanding marine environments. The extinction of theodossiids at the end of the Frasnian and the next transgressive episode possibly stimulated an expansion of rhynchonellids. The early Frasnian species Ripidiorhynchus livonicus (Buch, 1834), and the early Famennian R. huotinus (Verneuil, 1845) and R. griasicus (Nalivkin, 1934) are revised. Early Famennian species Paromoeopygma koscharica (Nalivkin, 1934) from the central region is redescribed. Ripidiorhynchus chencinensis sp. nov. from the latest Givetian of Poland, as well as Globulirhynchia minima sp. nov. from the late Frasnian of the central region of the Russia, are described.
