Opis:
Exceedingly violent winds can result in windbreak and in windthrow. It has happened in summer of 2002 in Pisz Forest District (north part of Poland). Strong wind damaged about 30 000 hectares of pine forest. In most situations, damaging wind resulted in windthrow rather than windbreak. In total 30 plots were selected for the studies, 15 plots in Pisz forest (damaged by wind) and 15 control plots in Maskulińskie District Forest (not damaged by wind). There were distinguished 5 age variants of stands, all of them in three recapitulations. The five age classes of stands were: I class (20−30 years old), II class (30−40 y.), III class (40−50 y.), IV class (50−70 y.) and V class (above 70 years old). In total 4 000 carabids individuals belonging to 46 species were caught during studies. The wards analy− sis showed substantial diference of carabid assemblages occurring in damaged and non damaged forest. In damaged forest, small zoophages, hemizoophages, an open area or eurtyopic species, xerophilus species were frequently observed. Substantial differences in mean individual biomass of assemblages occurring in damaged and non damaged forest were also observed.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to present the effects of general changes in land use in recent decades on plant cover structure in Poland. The paper is focused on spontaneous processes that occur in agricultural and forest areas being no longer under human pressure. Studies carried out in different geobotanical regions of Poland demonstrated that the directions and range of dynamic changes in plant cover are similar across the country. The formation of secondary forest phytocenoses, on the lands delivered from human activity is a common ecological process observed today in the agricultural landscape. In the dynamics of forest vegetation the basic process is regeneration after ceased use, and the introduction of legal protection.

Opis:
The origin of Nardus stricta dominated subalpine grassland (Nardo-Caricion rigidae alliance) is a frequently discussed topic in the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze in the Czech Republic). Many researchers considered them, as secondary stands arisen after Pinus mugo removal and by consequent oligotrophization of original plant communities, caused by long-term rough grazing and hay making activities without manuring. On the contrary, they are recognized as natural due to inability of generative reproduction of N. stricta and the very slow vegetative spread there. The aim of this study was to find proofs for generative reproduction of mat grass in subalpine conditions of the Giant Mountains. We identified a Pinus mugo nursery with arable land abandoned in 1956 and compared its vegetation with that of the surrounding area. Dense and homogenous sward dominated by N. stricta developed during the succession on the old arable land for 48 years, and it is an indisputable proof of generative reproduction of N. stricta there. Synthesizing historical facts on human activities in the past and the results of our contemporary vegetation analysis, we conclude that the Nardo-Caricion rigidae grassland was capable to spread relatively quickly, when agricultural activities above the upper timber line were introduced.

Rewitalizacja w wyniku dynamizacji i złożoności współczesnych procesów rozwojowych cieszy się coraz większym zainteresowaniem ekspertów i praktyków na świecie (nie tylko z powodu kryzysu). Także w Polsce jest na nie duże zapotrzebowanie. Tymczasem analiza projektów rewitalizacji w wybranych 6 regionach prowadzi do wniosku, że większość z nich zamiast rewitalizacji realizuje jej proste składowe, nieprzynoszące pełnych efektów rewitalizacji. Mechanizm ukryty za tym zjawiskiem nazywany jest następstwem celów (Merton) lub „oswajaniem” wymogów. Autor omawia czynniki sprzyjające ujawnieniu się tego mechanizmu, podkreślając, że dotyczy on równie Polski, co i Unii, jak też innych typów projektów. Mimo wielkiego postępu ostatnich lat, Polska nadal nie opuściła grupy najsłabiej rozwiniętych i najmniej innowacyjnych państw UE – może ten mechanizm jest jedną z przyczyn.
Urban regeneration as a result of dynamic and complex contemporary development processes attracts more and more interest from experts and politicians all over the world, and not only on account of the recent global economic crisis. It is also gaining wider currency in Poland. An analysis of urban regeneration projects in six regions of Poland leads to the conclusion that in most cases, as a result of the simplification of the term, they have not fully attained preset regeneration goals. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is known as the “succession of goals” (Merton) or “habituation”. The author looks at the factors underpinning this mechanism and claims that this mechanism seems to be typical of most European countries and other types of projects as well. Despite immense development progress made recently, Poland is still unable to leave the group of the least developed and least innovative EU member states. Perhaps the habituation mechanism is one of the reasons for this situation.

Opis:
Spontaneous regeneration in the hurricane−disturbed stand in the Pisz Forest District (N Poland) was registered in the years 2007−2008 and 2011−2012. Breast height diameter and crown size were measured on 10×10 m plots. The analysis also included the soil respiration rate, the decomposition rate of organic matter, soil pH, leaf area index (LAI), content of Mg, Ca, C, N and P in soil, and vegetation coverage of the forest floor. The natural regeneration was dominated by birch, followed by pine, which recolonized the disturbed stand in smaller extend, possibly because of the thick cover of organic material hindering germination and making it difficult for pine sprouts to reach the mineral soil. Spontaneous regeneration of the stand was most severely inhibited by Deschampsia flexuosa, whose growth over the entire surface was linked to the capture of excess released nitrogen resulting from the decomposition of organic matter. Mosses and lingonberry did not delay the spontaneous appearance of seedlings. The development of the natural regeneration suggests the possibility that an uneven−aged stand will emerge.

In Central Europe, deforestation led to a reduction of forest area by almost 80%, compared to the original area, by the beginning of the 20th century. At this point in time, a period of intensive reforestation began in an effort to restore forest areas. This process of reforestation, especially on post-agricultural land, continues to this day. This article examines reforestation and natural regeneration on former farmland and the factors that influence the current state as well as the future growth of the forest. Ancient and contemporary views on the functioning of stands on post-agricultural land created by both, natural and forced succession (i.e. afforestation), are recalled. In Poland, this issue primarily concerns managed state forests, which cover an area of over 2 million hectares. We discuss the differences in the development of these stands resulting from the history of agricultural cultivation, the type of afforestation, the influence of environmental factors as well as biotic threats to their development. Furthermore, the need to change the silviculture-, protection- and endowment-based approach to forest management in stands on post-agricultural land is highlighted.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a three−year research on ground beetle (Carabidae) assemblages conducted in the stands of the Piska Primeval Forest damaged by the 2002 hurricane and in control stands. Observations were carried out in the stands categorised into 5 age classes: class I (20−40 years), class II (40−50 years), class III (50−60 years), class IV (60−70 years) and class V (over 70 years). Beetles were caught using modified Barber's traps. The soil CO2 efflux rate and C:N ratio were measured. The Ward cluster analysis and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) clearly distinguished between carabid assemblages in the stands damaged by the hurricane and control stands. In damaged stands there was an increase in the number of Carabidae species with the simultaneous decrease in their abundance. The proportion of forest and European species has been considerably reduced. A marked decline in abundance of hygrophilous species in favour of xerophylous ones was also noted. The observed reduction in the SPC (Sum of Progressive Characteristics) index may indicate the preservation of changes in carabid assemblages and that their regeneration has not yet started.
