    The paper discusses changes that took place in the ways of expressing reflexivity in Old English. The study examines and evaluates the two most common forms conveying reflexivity: the use of personal pronouns and the reflexive pronoun self. The Early Old English personal pronouns were able to convey a reflexive relation, but, probably in order to avoid ambiguity, the personal pronoun began to be accompanied by the pronoun self in sentences rendering a reflexive meaning. The paper also contains an account of self used on its own, which was mostly employed in structures with emphatic meanings. Moreover, the work will adduce an example of an Old English inherently reflexive verb. The data come from the Dictionary of Old English corpus.

    Verbs of emotion with se in Slovene: between middle and reflexive semantics. A cognitive analysisThis article presents a cognitive analysis of Slovene emotion verbs with the personal pronoun se ‘self’, e.g., bati se ‘to be scared’. Slavic verbs of this type are traditionally considered reflexive. The objectives of the article are twofold. First, the article aims to demonstrate that se in Slovene verbs of emotion indicates not the reflexive, but the middle voice construction. However, given specific pragmatic factors, these verbs also form reflexive constructions with the heavy form sebe ‘self’, or even both middle and reflexive constructions with se and sebe, respectively. Second, this article challenges Anna Wierzbicka’s assumption that the Slavic verbs with the light form of the personal pronoun or the -sja affix (Russian) express (almost) volitional, i.e. self-induced emotion. In line with cognitive Suzanne Kemmer, it is claimed that the constructions with the verbs under discussion indicate a low degree of volitionality in the process of emotional change i.e. they lexicalize an event that occurs independently of the Experiencer participant’s will.

    This Construction grammar approach to French refl exive verbs describes the formal and semantic constraints at work in the different refl exive constructions, points out at their different branches of inheritance and shows cases of fusion with other argument structures. The article suggests a family tree of French reflexive constructions which appear to be derived from different transitive constructions. It also deals with how the reflexive argument structure modifies the semantics of the transitive verb used in reflexive construction.

    The article investigates the status of “reflexivity” in linguistics. The category of reflexivity is at the core of the categories of voice in the broad sense. The article deals with different approaches to identifying the reflexive decausative in modern linguistics. The paper describes the dimensions of the reflexive decausative, which includes verbs of mental activities; motion and movement; disappearance and loss; place and movement; body, and natural phenomena. The paper is devoted to the semantic aspect of the reflexive decausative in the Polish and Ukrainian languages. The results of this comparison with examples from modern Polish and Ukrainian literature are presented in the article.

    O wykładniku zwrotnym się z czasownikami z eksperiencerem w pozycji podmiotu w polszczyźnie Artykuł dotyczy analizy składniowej wykładnika zwrotnego się, występującego z czasownikami z Eksperiencerem w pozycji podmiotu w polszczyźnie. Analizowane są głównie te czasowniki zwrotne z Eksperiencerem w pozycji podmiotu, które regularnie alternują z czasownikami z Eksperiencerem w pozycji dopełnienia. Podane są dowody na to, że analizowane się nie ma interpretacji zwrotnej i dlatego nie może być uznane za zmienną związaną. Wykładnik zwrotny się również nie ma funkcji operatora redukującego walencję czasowników alternujących z Eksperiencerem w pozycji podmiotu. W analizie zaproponowanej w artykule, osadzonej w Programie Minimalistycznym Chomsky’ego (Minimalist inquiries: The framework, Derivation by phase i dalsze), się występujące z czasownikami z Eksperiencerem w pozycji podmiotu nie ma roli tematycznej, nie jest więc argumentem. Dodatkowo się nie ma cech φ i jest scalane w v. Ponieważ tylko v wyposażone w cechy φ może przypisywać cechę biernika, jeśli pozbawione cech φ się znajdzie się w v, v nie może przypisywać biernika. W rezultacie się w v blokuje przypisywanie biernika przez czasowniki alternujące z Eksperiencerem w pozycji podmiotu.
    This paper examines the syntax of the reflexive marker się, found with Subject Experiencer (henceforth SubjEx) verbs in Polish. Those reflexive SubjEx verbs that alternate with Object Experiencer (henceforth ObjEx) verbs are analysed. The reflexive się does not have a reflexive interpretation and does not represent a bound variable, and neither does it act as an operator reducing the valency of alternating SubjEx verbs. The reflexive się of SubjEx verbs, analysed in Chomsky’s Minimalist Program (“Minimalist inquiries: The framework,” “Derivation by Phase,” et seq., henceforth MP), is an element without a theta role, and hence not an argument. It merges in v and lacks φ-features. Since only v with φ-features can value accusative case, once v is filled with the φ-feature deficient się, v cannot value the accusative. Consequently, się in v blocks accusative case valuation with reflexive SubjEx verbs.
