Opis:
This article presents a literature review of studies utilising reflectance spectroscopy in geological research. We describe a variety of available spectral libraries together with providing examples of spectral reflectance diagrams, and explain the basic spectral ranges. Geologists can use different methods of data collection, for example, sensors mounted on satellites, airborne [including unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms] or portable spectroradiometers, and different ways of data processing. Most geological mapping based on reflectance spectroscopy is performed in the Arctic region, where vegetation does not obscure images. However, mineral mapping, studies of hot spring deposits, and rock/soil weathering alterations are also performed in lower latitudes. The development, combination and unifi-cation of all spectral data acquisition methods open up new possibilities for applications in a variety of geological and soil studies.

Opis:
Processing tomato production represents an important part of the total production of processed vegetables in the world. The quality characteristics of processing tomato, important for the food industry, are soluble solids content and antioxidant content (such as lycopene and polyphenols) of the fruit. Analytical quantification of these components is destructive, time and labour consuming. That is why researchers try to develop a non-destructive and rapid method to assess those quality parameters. The present study reports the suitability of a portable handheld visible near infrared spectrometer to predict soluble solids, lycopene and polyphenol content of tomato fruit puree. Spectral ranges of 500-1000 nm were directly acquired on fruit puree of five different tomato varieties using a FieldSpec HandHeld 2™ Portable Spectroradiometer. Immediately after spectral measurement, each fruit sample was analysed to determine soluble solids, lycopene and polyphenol content. Partial least square regressions were carried out to create models of prediction between spectral data and the values obtained from the analytical results. The accuracy of the predictions was analysed according to the coefficient of determination value (R2), the root mean square error of calibration/cross-validation.

Opis:
We perform a temporal and spectral analysis of simulated and experimental photoplethysmographic signals. We obtain technical requirements for an advanced photoplethysmographic imaging system able to add photoplethysmographic waveform and oximetry maps to the conventional measurements. The imaging system is centered on measuring the pulsatile signals produced by diffuse reflectance on the inner layers of the skin. We consider controlled illumination conditions for the system, with visible and near infrared components. This work comprises backscattering evaluation, waveform analysis and spectral dependence of photoplethysmographic signal. We determine the resolution requirement for the system by evaluating the amplitude of the backscattered signal using Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the bandwidth limit for the signal acquisition by Fourier analysis from a set of plethysmographic waveforms. Finally, the spectral dependence of the system is obtained from experimental results. We establish the requirements for the photoplethysmographic imaging system, including the source, subject and detector conditions.

Opis:
The use of chestnut wood (Castanea sativa Mill.) is highly relevant in Central Italy, as it is one of the most important and abundant broad-leaf species in this geographical area. The comprehension of the modifications induced by thermal treatment is of crucial importance to define the optimal temperature that could improve the mechanical and physical properties without affecting significantly the visual appearance. In this paper a careful and complete investigation on the effect of thermal treatment on chestnut wood (Castanea sativa Mill.) is reported. The aim of this study is addressed to understand the chemical-physical modifications occurred on the surface of wood samples, as a consequence of heating, in order to choose the most suitable temperature of treatment, also in the view of applying a possible coating. No such complete and homogeneous study on chestnut wood was found in the literature, so this paper contributes to add relevant scientific and technological information on it. Samples of chestnut were thermally treated 6 hours in a conventional oven at 140°C, 170°C and 200°C. Surface properties of heated wood, in comparison with untreated, were evaluated through the measurements of: roughness, colour, Vickers and Brinell hardness, surface profile and contact angle. The behaviour of earlywood and latewood was evaluated by studying separately the effect of heating on contact angle and surface micro- -hardness. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was also used to evaluate the chemical modification of wood components due to thermal treatment. Heating at 140°C has little influence on wood characteristics whereas 200°C has a great impact on colour, mechanical properties and hydrophobicity behaviour. The intermediate temperature, i.e. 170°C, seems to give the best results in term of improved mechanical properties and also aesthetical appearance of wood surfaces.

Opis:
Raman microspectroscopy of organic matter, vitrinite reflectance and fluid inclusion data were used to reconstruct the thermal history in the lower Carboniferous accretionary prism of the Culm Basin in the Nízký Jeseník Mts. (NE Bohemian Massif). The model involves the Variscan (mid–late Carboniferous) burial diagenesis, which was overprinted by a post-Variscan, probably Permian and/or early Mesozoic, thermal pulse(s) in its central and western parts. The latter may have been related to advective heat transport and the circulation of hot fluids. In the siliciclastic rocks of the Culm Basin, the maximum palaeotemperatures varied from ~200 ± 30 °C in the E (in the Hradec-Kyjovice Formation) to ~350 ± 30 °C in the NW (in the Andělská Hora Formation).

Opis:
Raman spectroscopy and vitrinite reflectance measurements of dispersed organic matter from Carboniferous shales in boreholes in the northern part of the Intra-Sudetic Basin were used for thermal history reconstruction. Microscopic investigations have shown that the organic matter is dominated by the vitrinite maceral group. In analysed samples, organic matter shows a varied degree of thermal alteration determined by the mean random vitrinite reflectance (VRo) ranging from 0.72% to 3.80%. Mean apparent maximum vitrinite reflectance (R’max) values reached 4.98%. The full width at half maximum of D1 and G bands in Raman spectra are well-correlated with mean VRo and R’max. Thermal maturity in the boreholes shows a regular increase with depth. Geological data combined with Raman spectroscopy and mean vitrinite reflectance results indicate that the analysed Carboniferous strata reached maximum paleotemperatures from c. 110 to c. 265°C. The regional paleogeothermal gradient in the late Paleozoic was c. 80°C/km. The Variscan heating event presumably caused a major coalification process of organic matter. The Carboniferous–Permian magmatic activity must have contributed to high heat flow, adding to the effect of sedimentary burial on the thermal maturity.
