Opis:
This paper proposes an analysis of extraposed relative clauses in the framework of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG), adopting its formalization as a tree rewriting grammar, specifically as a Tree Wrapping Grammar (TWG). Extraposed relative clauses are a puzzle since the link to the antecedent noun can be rather non-local but it seems nevertheless appropriate to model it as a syntactic dependency and not a purely anaphoric relation. Moreover, certain types of determiners require their NP to be modified by a (possibly extraposed) relative clause, and any comprehensive framework should account for this. We show that the tree wrapping operation of TWG, which is conventionally used to fill argument slots out of which some elements have been extracted, can be used to model extraposed relative clauses. The analysis accounts for the non-locality of the phenomenon while capturing the link to the antecedent NP in a local way (i.e., within a single elementary tree).

Opis:
The paper traces the evolution of textual properties of the Old French bipartite reciprocal marker li uns l’autre originating from Latin unus alterum. The data for carrying out the analysis were retrieved mainly from two corpora: the ARTFL Textes de Français Ancien and the Perseus Digital Library (perseus.tufts.edu). The markers documented at various stages of the history are demonstrated to have been different from each other mainly as far as two criteria are concerned: the type and the selection of antecedents. Unlike in classical and late Latin, where unus alterum used to be obligatorily co-indexed, Old French li uns l’autre was occasionally able to do away with antecedents (the li uns Nsing l’autre construction). The conclusions revolve around the adequacy of the Government and Binding theory: reciprocal markers in non-configurational languages are not always amenable to the analysis conducted in terms of this theoretical framework. Instead, it is claimed that the problem is more adequately grasped if the concept of construction, i.e. form-meaning pair, is applied.

Opis:
The article attempts to summarise the process of codifying the Ukrainian language in the first half of the 19th century. It covers the most important reference grammars of that time, presenting them in the context of the sociopolitical situation of a Ukraine divided between the Austrian and Russian Empires. The article describes the work of linguists and researchers who emphasized the autonomy of the language spoken in the Ukraine in contrary to the common trend which treated this ethnolect as a dialect of Polish or Russian. The presented reference grammars are a rich source of information about the Ukrainian language itself (including its regional varieties), as well as other forms of communication used at the beginning of the 19th century, such as iazychie. These works were a milestone towards the forming of the modern Ukrainian language and nation.

Opis:
Functionally-oriented linguistic theories, such as cognitive grammar (CG), offer nuanced descriptions of the meanings and uses of grammatical features. A simplified characterization of the semantics of the English active and passive voice grounded in CG terms and based on the reference point model is presented, as it is the basis of the instructional treatment offered to one of the groups in the quasiexperimental study reported in the paper. The study compares the effects of feature- focused grammatical instruction covering the form and meaning/use of the English voices based on CG with those of teaching based on standard pedagogical grammar rules. The results point to relatively high effectiveness of both instructional options in fostering the use of the target structures in both more controlled and more spontaneous performance, with traditional instruction being more successful than that based on CG with respect to the latter. A possible explanation of this superiority is that the subset of the participants (n = 27) exposed to the traditional explanations found them simple and easy to apply, contrary to the situation in the other group.
