Opis:
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie zastosowania systemu Spektrum Warunków Rekreacyjnych w zarządzaniu obszarem Wielkiej Rafy Koralowej w Australii.
The author tries to explain the idea of Recreation Opportunity Spectrum system and its practical application in the management of the protected area: Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in Australia. ROS main idea is to determine recreation settings, where varying outdoor recreation activities and experience opportunities can be realized. These concepts, which have been developed relatively recently, are very useful in the management of recreational areas around the world. The implementation of this system in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park runs from the 80’s and is constantly modified in order to achieve its objectives, which are, on the one hand: the protection of natural heritage resources, and on the other: making them available to tourists and to ensure the viability of the local economy. This system is not perfect and requires constant changes and improvements. According to the author, ROS and zoning, are those of many management tools that can be successfully implemented in Poland in the areas intensively used in tourism and recreation. The increasing volume of reported recreational conflicts all over the country, confirm the need for seeking management strategies, which the ROS system and zoning are included.

An analytical approach was used to model the wave-induced set-up and flow through simple shoal geometry when water depth is a linear function of the distance. Two different approaches were applied to parameterize the energy dissipation due to wave breaking. The resulting set-up height and flow velocity were determined and their dependence on the geometry of the shoal and offshore forcing was demonstrated. The extension of the solution to a more complicated bathymetry and verification against the experimental data will be given in the second part of the paper.

A large stromatoporoid Actinostroma cf. crassepilatum Lecompte, 1951, at least 8.5 m in diameter and 0.85 m in height, occurs in the Śluchowice quarry in Kielce, Holy Cross Mountains. This sponge occurs in growth position within Early Frasnian (transitans Zone) intraclast-rich reef-rubble deposits. A unique preservation of the reef-builder close to a reef core is implied for the northern flank of the developing Dyminy Reef during its maximum expansion northward into the Kostomłoty intrashelf basin.

Opis:
Silurian strata, stretching along the western margin of the East European Platform from the Baltic to the Black Sea, represent a potential target for both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon exploration. Distribution of the black shale facies, prospective for shale gas, and the reef facies, prospective for oil, has been studied in respect of palaeoenvironments. The Silurian sequence has been investigated in the territory of Ukraine (Volyn-Podillyan Plate, Dobrogean Foredeep) and correlated with the data on Moldova and Romania (Moldovian Platform). The occurrence of Silurian strata, their thickness, and petrographic and lithological characteristics allowed reconstructing the distribution of open-shelf, reef and lagoonal facies. The reef facies migrated during the Wenlock–Middle Pridoli, shifting towards the open sea and back towards the shore, and therefore has been termed a migrating reef facies. Correspondingly, the boundary between the open-shelf and reef facies was shifting. The facies distribution was controlled by the transgressive-regressive cycles, which caused the fluctuations of the shelf water depth in different time intervals of the Silurian. The shelf water depth of about 100 m, where the top of the oxygen-minimum layer impinged on the sea bottom, was the boundary between the open-shelf facies, represented by organic-rich sediments, and the reef buildups.

Opis:
Coral reef ecosystems are unique ecosystems that can live and reproduce well in the tropics. Corals that makeup reefs are a very important component of ecosystems on the earth's surface. These ecosystems are habitats for a large number of diverse organisms in the oceans. However, in recent years coral reefs have experienced significant degradation as a result of the impact of human disturbances and natural factors on biodiversity and ecosystem functions. It is known that 90% of coral reef damage comes from human activities and 10% comes from climate change (natural events). In addition to natural events, such as waves, storms, and rising sea surface temperatures, the use of island land and the increasing population and utilization of coral reef resources around the island, including those that may cause a decrease in coral cover, can indirectly change the morphology of the island. To find out about the pattern of changes in coral reef cover area based on zoning in TNKpS, it is necessary to conduct a quick and effective study by utilizing digital processing of satellite imagery. The data used are Landsat images (1994, 2000, and 2006) with change detection method using CVA technique. The results of the analysis showed that there was a change in the increase in coral reef cover over 12 years (1994-2006). The pattern of changes that occur is dominated towards the Northeast and Northwest in the area 1, meanwhile, for area 2 it varies in all directions.

Ophiurites crinitus is a fossil brittle−star species which passed largely unnoticed since its original description. In this paper, we redescribe the type material of O. crinitus with the aim to put it into the context of modern ophiuroid systematics, and propose the new genus name Ophiosternle to replace the invalid Ophiurites. The re−assessed species is shown to be a member of the extant deep−sea family Ophiacanthidae, articulated fossils of which are extremely rare. It presents greatest affinities with members of the Ophioplinthaca–Ophiocamax–Ophiomitra clade, of which it most probably represents the oldest known fossil species. The depositional environment of the strata, which yielded the described specimens is interpreted as shallow, storm−influenced marine setting in the immediate vicinity of coral reefs. This contrasts with the distribution pattern of extant species of the Ophioplinthaca–Ophiocamax–Ophiomitra clade, which almost exclusively occur at depths exceeding the shelf break.

Opis:
The development of a relatively small and isolated part of the Wuchiapingian, Zechstein Wielichowo Reef was possible owing to a progressive subsidence and frequent sea level fluctuations. Three biofacies were distinguished within the studied object: (1) a shallow-water and highly energetic Acanthocladia biofacies, dominated by bryozoans and crinoids, with poorly preserved porosity, reduced mainly by calcite cementation and compaction; (2) the Horridonia biofacies comprising numerous brachiopods, preferring a moderate depth of water, with comparably poor porosity; and (3) the Fenestella/Kingopora biofacies rich in fossils of the highest variability, related to the deepest and calmest waters, occurring on the top of the profile and showing a significant effective porosity, reaching almost 13%. Among many diagenetic processes altering the reef, several lines of evidence suggest that it was the meteoric diagenesis to enhance its porosity the most extensively. Since no stromatolites are present, the final sea level decrease is interpreted to be rapid, hence creating conditions favourable for the meteoric dissolution. Some intraparticle porosity, however, seems to be of a depositional origin.

Opis:
A detailed ecological study was conducted for three years (2001–03) on a 5 km stretch of well-developed coral reef facing an industrial site in the southernmost section of the Jordanian coast of the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. The degree of modification associated with the prevailing ecological factors was assessed with respect to species diversity and abundance of the major groups of the macrobenthic community: corals, bivalves, hydrozoans, echinoderms, sponges and macroalgae. Three locations of two depths each – 6 and 12 m – were selected and surveyed using the visual census point-intercept method. The actual area of the survey covered about 2250 m2. Macrobenthic communities occurring close to the industrial jetty were characterized by low diversity and the obvious dominance of soft coral (16–30% cover). In the deep transects (12 m) hard coral cover was higher than that in the shallow transects (30–55%). Correlation analyses indicated that species richness increased with increasing distance from the industrial jetty. Species richness of other macrobenthos was also higher as depth increased. The results revealed that the distribution and abundance of coral, echinoderms, hydrozoans and macroalgae were correlated with the relative importance of bottom modification within the various locations in the entire study area. However, no distinct influence of location or depth on the identities of most macrobenthic species was indicated.

Opis:
The sedimentary succession of the largest example of an Upper Oxfordian reef located in the southern part of the Polish sector of the northern Tethys shelf is described. Detailed sampling of exposures enabled characterization of the full succession of facies and microfacies diversity, documenting the reef evolution. The succession studied represents the maximum development of Upper Jurassic reefs in Poland corresponding to the upper Transversarium and the Bifurcatus zones, and followed by drowning of the carbonate platform in the lower Bimmamatum Zone. The reef succession comprises three types of facies, in which eight important microfacies types were distingushed, reflecting several stages of reef development. Mid-ramp, microbial-sponge frame-reefs represent a transgressive depositional sequence, up to tens of metres thick. A microbial-Crescentiella-ooid and ooid-intraclast-bioclast facies form numerous, decimetre- to metre-scale, sequences corresponding to higher-order, transgressive/regressive sea level changes. These facies represent a mid-inner ramp setting when sedimentation was dominated by bioclasts and non-skeletal grains (mainly ooids, oncoids, aggregate grains and intraclasts). The grains were stabilized by microbialites and cemented in early diagenesis, which created grain-dominated, microbial-cement supported reefs. As a result, both the mid-ramp, microbial-sponge frame-reefs and the shallow-water, grain-dominated, microbial-cement supported reefs form extensive, strongly lithified Oxfordian reef complexes in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.

Encrusting foraminiferans, although representing an important component of the so−called cryptic assemblages in both modern and ancient reef environments, are in general poorly described and little is known as regards their association with corals. In this paper, we describe coral−encrusting foraminiferan associations in the different facies that characterize the shallowing upward parasequences of the Nago Limestone (Upper Eocene, Trentino, northern Italy). From a relatively deep reef slope up to the shallow shelf−edge, corals have been recognized to be encrusted by different types of foraminiferan assemblages that differ on the basis of relative abundance of species, growth form and type of encrusted coral surface. The succession of encrusting foraminiferan assemblages is interpreted as controlled mainly by light, competition with coralline algae, hydrodynamic energy, and coral growth fabric.

Opis:
The Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) mass extinctions saw the global loss of all genera belonging to the tropically confined order Atrypida (and Pentamerida): though Famennian forms have been reported in the literafure, none can be confirmed. Losses were more severe during the Givetian (including the extinction of the suborder Davidsoniidina, and the reduction of the suborder Lissatrypidina to a single genus), but origination rates in the remaining suborder surviving into the Frasnian kept the group alive, though much reduced in biodiversity from the late Early and Middle Devonian. In the terminal phases of the late Palmatolepis rhenana and P. linguiformis zones at the end of the Frasnian, during which the last few Atrypidae dechned, no new genera originated, and thus the Atrypida were extirpated. There is no evidence for an abrupt termination of all lineages at the F-F boundary, nor that the Atrypida were abundant at this time, since all groups were in decline and impoverished. Atypida were well established in dysaerobic, muddy substrate, reef lagoonal and off-reef deeper water settings in the late Givetian and Frasnian, alongside a range of brachiopod orders which sailed through the F-F boundary: tropical shelf anoxia or hypoxia seems implausible as a cause for atrypid extinction. Glacial-interglacial climate cycles recorded in South America for the Late Devonian, and their synchronous global cooling effect in low latitudes, as well as loss of the reef habitat and shelf area reduction, remain as the most likely combined scenarios for the mass extinction events.
