Opis:
In terms of phonosemantic doubling, root reduplication (in combination with affixation) is the most productive technique in Kartvelian languages (Georgian, Megrelian, Laz, Svan). The paper is a description of patterns of Kartvelian phonosemantic reduplication with respect to their both morphological and phonological parameters. The following types have been identified: 1. Root reduplication; 2. Syllable reduplication; 3. Redupluication with affixation. Each type has its respective sub-types. Based on abounding empirical data, the paper is an attempt to scrutinize and detect whether and how the above mentioned patterns are valid for all the four Kartvelian languages and to draw inferences about occurring formal and/or functional regularities associated with phonosemantic reduplication.

Opis:
After a brief review of prior etymological attempts found in the literature, a complete, rule-governed etymology of Latin nimbus ‘rain cloud, sudden downpour, etc.’ – including a precise explanation of the medial nasal – is propounded. It is based on the Indo-European reduplication process that produces nouns, as delineated by Cohen (2014; 2015; 2017), and on Latin sound laws given and exemplified by Weiss (2009).

Reduplication as a word formation process is a relatively under-researched phenomenon in English. The aim of the paper, therefore, is to present different types of derivational reduplication ranging from the prototypical type based on exact repetition to the implied reduplication underlying the word formation process in cryptic rhyming slang. The article also strives to overview the typology of English rhyming slang as this is the domain of language where different types of reduplication abound. The article is written within the theoretical framework of sociolinguistics and morphology and offers ample citational evidence to substantiate theoretical assumptions.

On this occasion we will try to approach a topic that is not mentioned in the grammars, despite being quite frequent in the Spanish language, especially in its colloquial variety: that of the lexical reduplication type café café or guapo guapo. We begin with the explanation and presentation of the phenomenon and then focus only on the lexical reduplication i.e. the repetition of whole lexemes. We will present its mechanism of quantification (Roca and Suñer 1998), the supposed origin (Paasch-Kaiser 2015), its presence in the corpus and the theories about the role it plays in the language (Escandell Vidal 1991). In the end, we will proceed with the explanation of this phenomenon in terms of pragmatics, above all, that of illocutionary semantics (Wierzbicka 1999) and linguistic ethos (Baran 2010a, 2010b; Kerbrat-Orecchioni 2005; Nowikow 2003, 2006).

The article presents the results of research on linguistic reduplication in Vigatese, the literary language invented by writer Andrea Camilleri. This is an aspect of Camilleri’s storytelling that is often noted by scholars but that has not yet received a dedicated study. The research is conducted on the corpus of 101 texts starring Salvo Montalbano—composed of 29 novels and 72 short stories published between 1994 and 2020—within which about 300 different reduplication forms and more than 2,200 total occurrences have been recorded. Here, the data on the expressive reduplication with adjectives are given: 64 forms with 379 total occurrences analysed for different literary scales, at sentence level and paragraph level. The collocations within the corpus, the possible spelling variations, and whether the use is in mimesis or diegesis are restored. The methodological approach is of a mixed-methods nature: a digitally assisted text analysis (DATA) following the concept of scalable reading (Mueller, 2014) follows the traditional close-reading analysis. A second analysis of the data on the diegetic and mimetic axis was carried out. The results obtained were then used for a data-driven comparison conducted on the corpus of all of Giovanni Verga’s narrative works. These initial results show that three out of every four reduplications are a diegetic recurrence. Despite the extensive use of mimesis in the texts, the true orality of Camillerian storytelling seems to reside elsewhere. This research is part of a broader study of all narrative texts under the general hypothesis that the formal equivalents of the writer’s popularity are to be found in the repetitiveness that was originally, and perhaps too hastily, criticised.

The aim of the present article is to analyse the metalinguistic function of the nominal reduplication in Spanish. The lexical reduplication is a mechanism that consists in repeating a lexical unit within one phrase. The study shows that the nominal reduplication presents metalinguistic functions that reveal the interest of the speakers in a number of semantic issues related to the linguistic categorization and the concept of prototype. What is more, the metalinguistic aspect of the reduplicative constructions play a crucial role in a variety of situations as it entails some intersubjective meanings that are of a great importance for the interaction.

This paper proposes a formal model of regular languages enriched with unbounded copying. We augment finite-state machinery with the ability to recognize copied strings by adding an unbounded memory buffer with a restricted form of first-in-first-out storage. The newly introduced computational device, finite-state buffered machines (FS-BMs), characterizes the class of regular languages and languages de-rived from them through a primitive copying operation. We name this language class regular copying languages (RCLs). We prove a pumping lemma and examine the closure properties of this language class. As suggested by previous literature (Gazdar and Pullum 1985, p.278), regular copying languages should approach the correct characteriza-tion of natural language word sets.

The article deals with the reduplications in Latin and in Romance languages. While in Latin there were only reduplications of monosyllables, Romance languages have a lot of polysyllabic (mostly disyllabic) reduplications. This development could arise due to a bigger expressivity of vulgar Latin mixed with vernacular languages and to their contacts with other languages: Germanic (mostly English and German), Celtic, Slavic, Turkic and Hungarian, in which the polysyllabic reduplication is the most common.

Reduplicative linguistic patterns have been used as evidence for explicit algebraic variables in models of cognition.1 Here, we show that a variable-free neural network can model these patterns in a way that predicts observed human behavior. Specifically, we successfully simulate the three experiments presented by Marcus et al. (1999), as well as Endress et al.’s (2007) partial replication of one of those experiments. We then explore the model’s ability to generalize reduplicative mappings to different kinds of novel inputs. Using Berent’s (2013) scopes of generalization as a metric, we claim that the model matches the scope of generalization that has been observed in humans. We argue that these results challenge past claims about the necessity of symbolic variables in models of cognition.

Opis:
Reduplication has always been an important subject of morphology and language typology. Cross-linguistic studies have identified 45 functions of reduplication in 108 languages. Total reduplication is recognised as productive and systematic in Colloquial Singapore English (CSE), possibly due to language contact. The paper aims to present the cases of verbal and nominal reduplication in CSE described in the linguistic literature, and juxtapose them with the examples from the Singapore component of the International Corpus of English (ICE-SIN), which seem to be indicative of discrepancies in form and functions.

Reduplicated manifestations are implemented in diff erent lexical and grammatical forms in the following versions: diversity, similarity, expressiveness, strengthening the quality of the signs or the features of other signs depicting the intensity, frequency and duration, and the plurality of processes. In the modern Ukrainian language reduplicated words often consist of two components and are created in the following models: 1) a complete redo of a duplicated word and a duplicator: Subs1-Subs1, Adjec1- Adjec1, Numer1-Numer1, Pron1-Pron1, Verb fi nitum1-Verb fi nitum1, Adv1 -Adv1, Inter1- Inter1; 2) divergent repetition: Adjec1-pref (pre-) Adjec1, Adjec1-Adjec2 suf (-isink-), Pron1-Pron2 suf (-isink-), Adv1-part (non)-Adv1, Adv1-part (non)-Adv1, Adv1-pref (pre-) Adv1. Tripled reduplicate of multiplicative verbs (Verb fi nitum1-Verb fi nitum1-Verb fi nitum1) and the adverbs of qualitative semantics (Adv1-Adv1-Adv1) are functioning in the Ukrainian language sporadically.

W ramach podsumowania, autor dokonuje zestawienia zalet i wad proponowanej koncepcji.
The article is an attempt to address some controversial issues in the doctrine and in case law, and occurring in the context of the relationship and logical relation between material forgery of documents laid down in Article 270 §1 CC and material forgery of election and referendum- -related documents under Article 248(3) CC. As a result, the major part of the article constitutes a discussion of the legal nature of both criminal acts, the typical and individual object of protection of each of them and the scope of the concepts of a document, and an election and referendum document. Special attention is drawn to a cumulative concurrence of statutory provisions and a partial and useful statutory superfluum.

The present paper discusses diverse aspects of pleonasms in different types of German discourses. Pleonasm, similarly to tautology, is a strongly criticised phenomenon, not only by regular language users, but also by linguists, especially lexicographers. It does not change the fact, that it is widely used in different discourse types, especially in spoken and technical ones. It appears also on different levels of the language structure. It occurs that it is a mechanism of the language use and it should not be treated a priori as a mistake, because it is a specific language universal, present in different languages around the world.
