Opis:
The current task explores automatic generation control knowledge under old-style circumstances for a triple-arena scheme. Sources in area-1 are thermal-solar thermal (ST); thermalgeothermal power plant (GPP) in area-2 and thermal-hydro in area-3. An original endeavour has been set out to execute a new performance index named hybrid peak area integral squared error (HPA-ISE) and two-stage controller with amalgamation of proportional-integral and fractional order proportional-derivative, hence named as PI(FOPD). The performance of PI(FOPD) has been compared with varied controllers like proportional-integral (PI), proportional-integralderivative (PID). Various investigation express excellency of PI(FOPD) controller over other controller from outlook regarding lessened level of peak anomalies and time duration for settling. Thus, PI(FOPD) controller’s excellent performance is stated when comparison is undergone for a three-area basic thermal system. The above said controller’s gains and related parameters are developed by the aid of Artificial Rabbit Optimization (ARO). Also, studies with HPA-ISE enhances system dynamics over ISE. Moreover, a study on various area capacity ratios (ACR) suggests that high ACR shows better dynamics. The basic thermal system is united with renewable sources ST in area-1 also GPP in area-2. Also, hydro unit is installed in area-3. The performance of this new combination of system is compared with the basic thermal system using PI(FOPD) controller. It is detected that dynamic presentation of new system is improved. Action in existence of redox flow battery is also examined which provides with noteworthy outcome. PI(FOPD) parameters values at nominal condition are appropriate for higher value of disturbance without need for optimization.

Opis:
In Poland, the redox potential (EH) is seldomly measured in groundwater. Since the year 2006 determination of redox potential is required for documenting properties of curative mineral waters. Investigations of redox conditions in groundwater need both proper measurement and interpretation. In the paper, crucial questions of: 1) redox equilibrium in groundwater, 2) field measurement, 3) correction methods, and 4) EH interpretation are presented. Some aspects of applying the redox potential for interpreting groundwater chemistry and using geochemical modelling are illustrated by hydrochemical data of curative waters from spas in the Sudetes Mts., SW Poland. Main reasons of the common redox non-equilibrium found in groundwater are co-existence of numerous aqueous redox pairs and usually non-equilibrium in particular redox pairs. Redox determinations have to be done in the field, and require extreme cleanness and precision, e.g., measuring without contact with the atmospheric air. Field measurements must be corrected to the standard hydrogen electrode, considering: type of reference electrode, concentration of electrode filling solution, type of standard redox solution, and water temperature. The redox potential has been measured in water at first from all the Sudetic spas, totally in 33 water intakes. In curative waters from the Sudetes corrected EH ranges between –159 mV and +343 mV. Usually, thermal waters show lower EH values than cold, CO2-rich waters. The lowest redox potential was found in the hottest thermal waters, i.e., in water from Zdzisław intake (in Lądek Zdrój) and C-2 intake (in Cieplice Śląskie Zdrój). Generally, the higher the pH, the lower the EH in groundwater. Methods of geochemical modelling, which are often and often applied in groundwater research, also require the EH determination. Information about EH are used in the calculation of speciation models of water, and affect the results of whole geochemical modelling as well as evaluations of the saturation state. The speciation-solubility modelling for the Sudetic curative waters, presented in the paper, shows that the proper correction of field EH measurement determines the quality of calculations. Improperly corrected EH values might lead to species activity errors, even up to several order of magnitudes, and erroneous interpretation of the mineral phases stability in the hydrogeochemical system.

Opis:
In this work, the spectrophotometric studies on the kinetics of redox reaction between gold(III) bromide complexes and sodium nitrite, were carried out. From the kinetic curves collected under different conditions of reactants concentration, addition of bromide ions, temperature, pH and ionic strength, corresponding rate constants have been determined. The obtained results suggest the complex path of the [AuBr4]- reduction consisting of two parallel, bimolecular reactions where different reductant species (HNO2 and NO2-) take place and consecutive step with the metallic gold production. The second-order rate constants at 20°C are equal to 2.948 and 0.191 M-1·s-1, respectively. The values of activation enthalpy and activation entropy for the first and the second parallel step of the reaction were found to be ΔH = 29.18 kJ·mol-1 and ΔS = –13.95 J·mol-1·K, and ΔH‡ = 40.75 kJ·mol-1 and ΔS‡ = –31.06 J·mol-1·K, respectively. It was found that the reaction accelerates significantly with the increase of pH and is inhibited with the increase of Br- concentration. The substitutive, inner-sphere mechanism of electron transfer in the studied system was also suggested.

Opis:
The most common means to analyze redox gradients in sediments is by push/pulling electrochemical probes through sediment’ strata while repeating measurements. Yet, as electrodes move up and down they disrupt the texture of the sediment layers thus biasing subsequent measurements. This makes it difficult to obtain reproducible measurements or to study the evolution of electrochemical gradients. One solution for solving this problem is to eliminate actuators and electrode movements altogether, while instead deploying probes with numerous electrodes positioned at various depths in the sediment. This mode of operation requires electrode switching. We discuss an electrode-switching solution for multi-electrode probes, based on Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) multiplexors. In this solution, electrodes can be individually activated in any order, sequence or time frame through digital software commands. We discuss constraints of CMOS-based multilayer electrochemical probes during cyclic voltammetry.

Opis:
Soil enzyme activity indicates potential of the soil to sustain biochemical processes, which are essential for the maintenance of soil fertility. Dehydrogenase activity reflects total oxidative activity of soil microflora, catalase activity is responsible for the decomposition of H2O2. Redox potential (Eh) is an index of the soil aeration status. Effects of soil temperature and water content on Eh, soil dehydrogenase activity and catalasc activity in an Eutric Histosol at three different fields planted with Papulus nigra, Salix amencana, and grasses (with Alopecurits pratensis, Phalaris arundinacea, Festuca pratensis is as dominating species) were studied at the depths of 10, 30, 50, 70 cm. Enzyme activity and redox potential showed seasonal fluctuations following natural changes of soil water content and temperature. Dehydrogenase activity was significantly correlated with soil temperature and water content (r=0.37** and r=0.27***, respectively). Redox potential showed a significant correlation with soil water content (r=-0.32*** ). Catalase activity did not exhibit any correlation with the tested parameters. The type of plantation influenced enzyme activities; tree cover was characterised by higher dehydrogenase and catalase activities than meadow soils.

Main thiols and disulfides were determined in the hemolymph of the Jamaican field cricket Gryllus assimilis at various developmental stages. On the basis of these data, redox potentials of the glutathione, cysteine and homocysteine redox systems were calculated. The concentrations of all thiols studied decreased during development (at a stage of 6 molts) with respect to young crickets, and increased again in adult insects. Redox potentials of the glutathione and cysteine systems increased from values of -131.0±5.6 mV and -86.9±17.1 mV, respectively in young crickets to -58.0±3.6 mV and -36.1±4.2 mV, respectively, at the stage of 6 molts and decreased to values of -110.4±24.8 mV and -66.3±12.2 mV, respectively, in adult insects. Redox potentials of the glutathione and cysteine systems in the hemolymph of young and adult insects were similar to those reported for human plasma.

Opis:
Alzheimer’s Disease is a neurodegenerative condition, an irreversible progressive dementia caused by death of neurons in brain structures responsible for memory related processes. Despite many years of research and numerous trials, no therapy succeeded that could stop the development of this disease, which affects tens of millions of patients worldwide. The amyloid cascade prevails among a variety of possible mechanisms of its development proposed in the scientific literature. It proposes that death of neurons, preceded by dysfunction of their synaptic activity is caused by the incremental formation of structures (fibrils, oligomers) composed of Aβ peptides. In its copper variant the processes of aggregation and oxidative stress, causing the inflammation and neuronal damage are related to the formation of reactive Cu(II) complexes with Aβ peptides. Aβ peptides are a family of molecules with similar amino acid sequences, differing mainly by the presence of longer or shorter terminal sequences. Their physiological role of is unclear. Aβ1-42 and Aβ1-40 have been mostly studied, but most studies have ignored a very abundant N-terminally truncated species Aβ4-42. We recognized it, and more gene-rally the Aβ4-x peptide family as potentially strong Cu(II) ligands, due to the presence at their N-termini of the Phe-Arg-His amino acid sequence, comprising the ATCUN/NTS structural motif. This observation was followed by vigorous research performed in our laboratory. We studied the ability of Aβ4-x peptides to bind Cu(II) ions, their electrochemical properties and redox reactivity, interactions with proteins which bind copper under physiological conditions, their aggregation properties in the Cu(II) presence and susceptibility to proteolysis. Additionally, we investigated their interaction with a molecule of a therapeutic potential. We demonstrated that Aβ4-x peptides can be primary copper bin-ding agents in extracellular spaces in the brain, able to instantaneously intercept copper from Aβ1-x peptides studied so far. Cu(II) complexes of Aβ4-x peptides are highly resistant to oxidation and reduction, release copper ions to other molecules slowly and reluctantly, and do not produce reactive oxygen species. In accordance with these properties we proposed a physiological role for the Aβ4-42 peptide as a molecule cleansing the synaptic cleft from Cu2+ ions and thereby assuring the correct neurotransmission. This function can however be disturbed by an inappropriate pharmacological intervention. The results of studies of the effect of cupric ions on the aggregation and membrane interactions of the Aβ4-40 peptides suggest that copper can inhibit the Aβ4-x peptides toxicity, thereby providing an additional support for our concept. Studies of hydrolysis of Aβ peptides and properties of its products revealed a possibility for a significant role of short fragments in the brain copper physiology. Our hypothesis awaits verification by biological studies. The issue of metabolism of the studied complexes is a key issue remaining to be solved.
