This article investigates the Spanish translation of Miron Białoszewski's Memoir from the Warsaw Uprising. I discuss the erroneous translation of the work as a “diary” according to Spanish dictionaries and literary theory works, the paratexts (introduction and afterword), and the reception of the work by the Spanish speaking community. In the last part, I examine a few passages to demonstrate how Białoszewski’s style has come to be flattened in the translation process.

Julije Benešć’s correspondence with Polish scholars, people of culture, writers, and numerous acquaintances and friends began in his school years and lasted until his death. A large collection of letters and postcards sent to him by Poles has been collected in the HAZU library in Zagreb, but unfortunately it has not yet been put in order, and some items have been lost. The materials in the collection were only collected in the form of a list prepared by Ivan Meden in 1978. This text presents letters from Maria Kuncewiczowa, which provide information about the relations of Polish writers with the Croatian popularizer of their works and about the writer’s perception of the Polish literary scene in the years 1920s.

The article analyses strategies utilised by Wilhelmina Zyndram-Kościałkowska, a translator of the novel Dopo il divorzio by Grazia Deledda, to introduce Deledda’s works on the polish literary market. The text shows ways in which characteristics of Deledda’s works and Kościałkowska’s translation strategies serve to minimise the effect of foreignness and to present Deledda’s works as important argument in the polemics between the literary tradition and the modernity. In consequence, the Polish translation of Dopo il divorzio may be viewed as an act of an influence on a Polish literary system.

The article discusses the question of how Nordic literature in translation – as reflected in Polish literary reviews – creates Norden as a place. What kind of imagery (constructed in a continuous discursive process) is projected on the Nordic region, and what purposes does this construction serve? The analysis draws on an understanding of place as a construct based on “body, landscape and culture” (Ringgaard & DuBois 2017:20) and uses concepts taken from imagology and literary reception studies.

Opis:
Aleksander Wat’s novella The Wandering Jew, published in 1926, is his only prose text in which the Jewish motif is the very center of the narrative. Wat carefully avoids dramatic or frightening notes, staying away from the characters created by Potocki, Quinet, Schubart, and Meyrink. However, certain aspects of the old version of the ancient myth remain: the millennial peregrination through history, the absolute solitude of the hero, and his magical movement and appearance in different parts of the world. The fusion of Catholicism and communism in the shadow of Marranism, represented by the protagonist Nathan, reflects grotesquely either on the phenomenon of Jewish youth fleeing the shtetls observed by young Wat, or on his own ecumenical dreams and reflections on the metahistorical role of Jews and their conversion. The article analyzes this issue also with particular regard either to the reception of the old Christian legend, or to the Anti-semitic narrative on the conspiracy of Jewish converts, shared by Keith Gilbert Chesterton, a contemporary writer very important for Wat.

Przedmiotem refleksji w artykule jest recepcja literatury klasycznej w szkole. Punkt wyjścia omówienia tematu stanowi analiza wyników anonimowej ankiety przeprowadzonej przez autorkę w szkołach podstawowych i średnich w Gdańsku, Wejherowie i Wiślince. Zebrany materiał przeczy stereotypowemu przekonaniu, zgodnie z którym młodzi ludzie wiążą dyskurs przeszłości wyłącznie z zacofaniem i ograniczeniem. Okazuje się bowiem, że dostrzegają oni współistnienie przeszłości z teraźniejszością oraz są dalecy od monopolizowania swoich wyborów lekturowych literaturą osadzoną wyłącznie w aktualnej sytuacji społeczno-kulturowej. W tym kontekście przedstawiono publikacje, które ożywiają doświadczenie lekturowe oraz są przeciwwagą dla konwencjonalnych treści lekcyjnych często sprowadzających analizę arcydzieł przeszłości do postawienia oczywistych tez i omówienia odgórnie spreparowanych zagadnień.
The subject of reflection in the article is the reception of classical literature at school. In order to investigate it, the author conducted an anonymous survey in primary and secondary schools in Gdańsk, Wejherowo and Wiślinka. The collected material contradicts the stereotypical belief that young people associate the discourse of the past only with backwardness and limitation. It turns out that they perceive the coexistence of the past with the present and are far from monopolizing their reading with literature embedded solely in the current socio-cultural situation. In this context, the author presents publications that enliven the reading experience and are a counterweight to conventional lesson content, often reducing masterpieces of the past to obvious theses and top-down issues.

Tematem artykułu jest historia teatralnej recepcji twórczości literackiej Janusza Korczaka (Henryka Goldszmita) (1878 lub 1879–1942) w polskim teatrze w latach 1931–2021, od prapremiery dramatu Senat szaleńców w 1931 r. w Teatrze Ateneum w Warszawie po najnowsze inscenizacje. W analizie uwzględniono też adaptacje trzech powieści Korczaka dla dzieci: Król Maciuś Pierwszy, Król Maciuś na wyspie bezludnej (pierwodruk – 1923 r.) i Kajtuś czarodziej (najstarsza edycja – 1935 r.). Autor pisze o realizacjach z teatrów dramatycznych i lalkowych z różnych polskich miast, a także o jednej baletowej, przywołuje inscenizacje oraz adaptacje radiowe i telewizyjne powieści Korczaka. Zwraca też uwagę na zalety i słabości inscenizacji, jak również na metody ich promocji. Omawia przyczyny małego zainteresowania twórców teatralnych sztuką Senat szaleńców i zastanawia się, dlaczego chętniej adaptują oni książki pisarza dla dzieci. Materiał badawczy wykorzystany w artykule to głównie źródła – publikacje prasowe, plakaty i fotografie teatralne, w mniejszym stopniu wspomnienia, w jednym wypadku – nagranie radiowe. Opracowania naukowe i popularyzatorskie przydatne w kwerendzie oraz przywołane w bibliografii i przypisach to publikacje na temat biografii Janusza Korczaka i historii polskiego teatru. Zagadnienie badawcze ma podwójnie rocznicowy charakter. W 1931 r., czyli ponad 90 lat temu, odbyła się prapremiera sztuki Senat szaleńców, a w 2022 r. mija 80. rocznica tragicznej śmierci Korczaka oraz dzieci i części pracowników z jego warszawskiego sierocińca.
The subject of the article is the history of the theatrical reception of Janusz Korczak's (Henryk Goldszmit) (1878 or 1879–1942) literary works in Polish theatre in 1931- 2021, from the premiere of the drama Senat szaleńców in 1931 at the Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw to the most recent productions. The author also includes adaptations of three of Korczak's novels for children: Król Maciuś Pierwszy, Król Maciuś na wyspie bezludnej (first printing - 1923) and Kajtuś czarodziej (oldest edition – 1935). The author writes about productions from dramatic and puppet theatres from various Polish cities, as well as about one ballet theatre, evoking staging, radio and television adaptations of Korczak's novels. It highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the parts of the staging, as well as the methods of promoting them. The reasons behind the low interest of theatre artists in the play The Senat szaleńców and the fact that they willingly adapt the writer's books for children are discussed. The research material used in the article is mainly sources – press publications, posters and theatrical photos, to a lesser extent memoirs, and in one case a radio recording. Scientific and popularizing studies, useful in the query and cited in the bibliography and footnotes, are publications on the biography of Janusz Korczak and the history of Polish theatre.

Celem rozważań przedstawionych w artykule jest przyjrzenie się, w ujęciu funkcjonalnym, kulturze, literaturze i językowi polskiemu postrzeganych jako egzotyczne w Republice Korei. We wstępie nakreślono uwarunkowania geopolityczne Korei Południowej, które w pewnym zarysie mogą odzwierciedlać stopień dostępności tego kraju dla cudzoziemców i otwartość jego mieszkańców na kultury obce. W dalszej części szkicu podjęto próbę przybliżenia relacji polsko-‑koreańskich na podstawie opublikowanych w Polsce i Korei wydań popularno-naukowych. Analiza wybranych publikacji potwierdza tezę o egzotyce języka polskiego i polskiej kultury w Korei, równocześnie wskazuje na obopólne zainteresowania oraz wyszukiwania miejsc wspólnych w historii i tekstach literackich. Następnie przybliżono recepcję literatury polskiej w Korei jako jedną z możliwości oswajania odległej kultury, historię jedynych do tej pory studiów polskich na Hankuk Univerity of Foreign Studies oraz opisano politykę językową rządu koreańskiego wobec edukacji rzadkich języków obcych. Szkic zawiera również opis projektu, w ramach którego powstała seria podręczników, stanowiących wzbogacenie oferty glottodydaktyki polonistycznej o pomoce skierowane do odbiorców koreańskojęzycznych.
The purpose of this paper is to take a functional look at the culture, literature and language of Poland which is perceived as exotic in the Republic of Korea. In the introduction, the geopolitical conditions of South Korea are outlined, which, to some extent, may reflect the country’s accessibility for foreigners and the openness of its inhabitants to foreign cultures. In the next part of the outline, an attempt is made to introduce Polish-Korean relations on the basis of popular science publications in Poland and Korea. An analysis of selected publications confirms the thesis of the exoticism of Polish language and culture in Korea, whilst at the same time indicating mutual interests and searching for common places in the historical past and in literary texts. Next, the reception of Polish literature in Korea is presented as one of the possibilities of taming a distant culture, as is the history of the only Polish studies course so far at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and the language policy of the Korean government towards the education of rare foreign languages. The outline also includes a description of the project, which involves the creation of a series of textbooks that will enrich the offer of Polish language glottodidactics with material addressed to Korean-speaking audiences.

This paper focuses on the Russian and Polish receptions of the works of Roman Senchin, a leading representative of the New Realism Trend in Russian literature. The writer’s debut was his collection of short stories entitled Athens Nights (Афинские ночи), published in 2000. Since then, Senchin has written many works, including The Yeltyshevs (Елтышевы), published in 2009 and translated into several languages. His works are widely commented on, discussed, analyzed, and interpreted not only by Russian literary scholars, critics, and commentators of Russian cultural life, but also by Polish researchers investigating contemporary Russian literature. The article presents the views of literary critics and literary scholars concerning Senchin’s works, as well as reflections on their typical or dominant features. Despite widely differing points of view, Russian literary critics agree that Roman Senchin is the most pessimistic contemporary Russian writer.

W proponowanym artykule analizie poddany zostaje wpływ publikacji cyklu Zmierzch na funkcjonowanie współczesnego życia literackiego. Wywołująca kontrowersje ogromna popularność sagi, zarówno wśród jej fanów, jak i antyfanów, w połączeniu z następującym ówcześnie rozwojem portali społecznościowych, zaowocowała zmianą kulturową, w wyniku której mechanizmy komunikacji literackiej uległy trwałej transformacji. Równoczesnym efektem masowej poczytności książek Stephenie Meyer była zmiana statusu literatury kierowanej do młodych czytelniczek, która z oferty marginalnej stała się jednym z najbardziej obecnie rozwijanych segmentów rynku wydawniczego.
In her article, Monika Gnieciak analyses the impact of the publication of the Twilight saga on the functioning of contemporary literary life. The controversial popularity of the saga, both among its fans and anti-fans, combined with the development of social networking sites at the time of its publication, resulted in a cultural change which caused the mechanisms of literary communication to undergo a permanent transformation. At the same time, the mass readership of Stephenie Meyer’s fiction brought about a change in the status of the young adult genre, which from a marginal literary product has developed into one of the most vibrant segments of the current publishing market.

The article provides an overview of Slovenian translations of Polish literature in the 2019’s and 2020’s and reviewers’ responses to these works. A total of 23 translations of books were published in 2019, including five literary works (three collections of poetry and two novels). Among the 13 published translations of the following year there were eight literary works (one drama, a collection of short stories, three novels and three collections of poetry). The publishing of e-books also increased significantly in 2020. The published translations give Slovenian readers access to familiar, mostly world-renowned authors such as O. Tokarczuk, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska, C. Miłosz, I. Karpowicz, while works by I. Ostachowicz, B. Nowicka, A. Kulisiewicz, J. Małecki, R. Franczak, and K. Dąbrowska were translated into Slovenian for the first time. With the exception of J. Kochanowski’s drama, all of the literary works translated were from the second half of the 20th century or the 21st century.
Pregled prevodov poljske književnosti v slovenščino kaže, da je bilo v letu 2019 izdanih 23 knjižnih prevodov, med njimi pet leposlovnih del, tj. tri zbirke poezije in dva romana (poleg tega še 15 otroških/mladinskih knjig in prevodi treh neleposlovnih del). V letu 2020 je opazno pospešeno izdajanje elektronskih knjig, ki je najverjetneje posledica omejene dostopnosti knjižnic in knjigarn v času epidemije koronavirusne bolezni. Izšlo je osem elektronskih knjig, ki so bile v preteklih letih že izdane v fizični obliki, in 13 tiskanih knjig novo prevedenih del. Poleg treh otroških in dveh neleposlovnih, je bilo prevedenih osem leposlovnih del: ena drama, trije romani, ena zbirka kratkih zgodb in tri zbirke poezije. Prevodi prinašajo dela slovenskim bralcem že znanih in večinoma svetovno prepoznavnih avtoric in avtorjev, kot so O. Tokarczuk, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska, C. Miłosz, I.Karpowicz, prvič pa so bila v slovenščino prevedena dela I. Ostachowicza, B. Nowicke, A.Kulisiewicza, J. Małeckega, R. Franczak in K. Dąbrowske. Z izjemo drame J.Kochanowskega gre za prevode književnosti druge polovice 20.stoletja oz. 21.stoletja, ki so v slovenskih medijih večinoma doživeli recepcijski odziv (z izjemo Kochanowskega in Miłosza), ta je skoraj v vseh primerih zelo pozitiven. Avtorji prevodov leposlovnih del so uveljavljeni prevajalci: J. Unuk, N. Jež, K. Šalamun-Biedrzycka, K. Pisk, med njimi pa se pojavljajo tudi nova imena, kot je J. Snoj. Der Beitrag untersucht die Transkulturalität von Wiktor Gomulickis 1896 veröffentlichtem Poem Pieśń o Gdańsku, einem der wenigen polnischen Gedichte über das Danzig des Wilhelminischen Kaiserreiches. Er zeigt, dass die antagonistische Zeichnung des deutsch-slawischen Konflikts im Danzig jener Zeit mit intertextuellen Referenzen zur deutschen Literatur (Heinrich Heine, Joseph von Eichendorff ) einhergeht, das Gedicht also durch die Spannung von Nähe und Distanz zur deutschen Hegemonialkultur geprägt ist. Einige ausgewählte Szenen des Poems werden unter Rückgriff auf interkulturelle Metaphern (Palimpsest, Störung) interpretiert.
The essay analyzes transculturalism of Wiktor Gomulicki’s poem Pieśń o Gdańsku, published in 1896, one of a few Polish poems about Gdańsk of the Wilhelmine Empire. It shows that antagonistic drawing of the German-Slavic conflict in Gdańsk of that period is accompanied by intertextual references to German literaturę (Heinrich Heine, Joseph von Eichendorff ), so the poem is characterized by tension of proximity and distance to the German hegemonic culture. The selected scenes of the poem are interpreted with recourse to intercultural metaphors (palimpsest, disruption).

The article presents the dynamics, characteristics and the shifting paradigms of the reception of Polish literature in China from 2012 to 2020. The author analyses the reasons for the popularity of the most often translated and read Polish authors on the Chinese publishing market, with particular interest in Czesław Miłosz, Olga Tokarczuk and Andrzej Sapkowski. She also presents the translators – both experienced and often recognised and awarded doyens of Polish studies in China, and those from the intermediate and youngest generations to whom the oldest ones passed the knowledge, skills, passion and the sense of common mission of building cross-cultural dialogue through literature.

During the three decades since 1989 Gazeta Wyborcza published a considerable number of articles, reviews, reports, essays (feuilletons) and news items about various aspects of Czech cultural life, especially contemporary literature (i.e. individual authors as well as issues and sites with literary connections). While a steady focus was kept on the work of the most popular, award-winning writers like Václav Hrabal, Milan Kundera, Ota Pavel, Jaroslav Hašek, Karel Čapek and Josef Škvorecký, Gazeta Wyborcza also promoted the fiction of Michal Viewegh, Irena Obermannová and Jáchym Topol
Na łamach „Gazety Wyborczej” w latach 1989–2019 zamieszczano artykuły przeglądowe, recenzje, reportaże, felietony i wzmianki, poświęcone rozmaitym aspektom życia kulturalnego w Czechach, szczególnie zaś współczesnej literaturze. Odnosiły się one zarówno do poszczególnych autorów, jak i miejsc oraz kwestii ideowych, powiązanych z literaturą czeską. Najwięcej pisano o twórczości tych autorów czeskich, którzy byli popularni i nagradzani, jak Hrabal, Kundera, Ota Pavel, Hašek, Havel, Čapek, Škvorecký. Popularyzowano także mniej znanych czeskich twórców literackich, jak Michal Viewegh, Irena Obermannova, Jachym Topol.
