The author of the article – Yi Lijun, a distinguished translator of Polish literary works into Chinese – attempts to present the reception of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s works in China, con-centrating on the issues concerning translations. She presents vignettes of the greatest scholars’ discussing Sienkiewicz’s works, the history of reception of Sienkiewicz’s writings, as well as the methods of popularizing his novels. She concentrates on problematics concerning the process of translating Trylogy from Polish language into Chinese, pointing out the difficulties and mistakes made by translators. She discusses her own work on translating the novels of the author of Quo vadis.

The author analyses the reasons for the popularity of the most often translated and read Polish authors on the Chinese publishing market, with particular interest in Czesław Miłosz, Olga Tokarczuk and Andrzej Sapkowski. She also presents the translators – both experienced and often recognised and awarded doyens of Polish studies in China, and those from the intermediate and youngest generations to whom the oldest ones passed the knowledge, skills, passion and the sense of common mission of building cross-cultural dialogue through literature.

This article investigates the Spanish translation of Miron Białoszewski's Memoir from the Warsaw Uprising. I discuss the erroneous translation of the work as a “diary” according to Spanish dictionaries and literary theory works, the paratexts (introduction and afterword), and the reception of the work by the Spanish speaking community. In the last part, I examine a few passages to demonstrate how Białoszewski’s style has come to be flattened in the translation process.

In 1930 Sibilla Aleramo translated the play Dom kobiet by Polish writer Zofia Nałkowska into Italian. This three-act drama, probably the first play with only female characters in the history of theatre, was set in Warsaw the same year and was suddenly a huge success in Poland. Aleramo’s translation has remained unpublished and has been preserved (as a manuscript and a typescript draft) in the author’s archive belonging to the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome. The paper focuses on the history of this text, based mainly on the analysis of Nałkowska’s diary and unpublished letters and documents from Aleramo’s archive.

This article discusses the introduction of Polish books to children and young adult readers in South Korea. Its particular focus is on picture books which address environmental issues. Wioletta Hajduk-Gawron and Younghwa Kim examine the conditions favourable to the presence of translations of Polish books on the Korean publishing market, the phenomenon of the picture book and the values of eco-education through literature. Using several books as examples, the authors conduct a sample analysis of the chosen strategies used by publishers in the selection of books to be translated. They also examine strategies used in adapting a Polish book for the different cultural context; these strategies involve explication and textual or graphic modifications.

The article presents the bilingual French-Polish publication, entitled La Morale de Madame Dulska. Moralność Pani Dulskiej (2011). Editors of the volume (Danuta Knysz-Tomaszewska, Grzegorz Bąbiak and Cécile Bocianowski) invited representatives of various universities to join the project, among them: Paris III Sorbonne (Elżbieta Koślacz-Virol), Paris IV Sorbonne (Danièle Chauvin) and University of Warsaw (Tomasz Wójcik). The play was translated by: Krzysztof Jeżewski – translator of Polish poetry into the French, also Elżbieta Koślacz-Virol, author of the book on Gabriela Zapolska published in France. La Morale de Madame Dulskawas based on the translation by Paul Cazin (1881-1963).The French-Polish publishing initiative has been based on a copy of Paul Cazin’s manuscript donated by his widow, Juliette Monfet, in the late 1970s.

What kind of imagery (constructed in a continuous discursive process) is projected on the Nordic region, and what purposes does this construction serve? Celem rozważań przedstawionych w artykule jest przyjrzenie się, w ujęciu funkcjonalnym, kulturze, literaturze i językowi polskiemu postrzeganych jako egzotyczne w Republice Korei. We wstępie nakreślono uwarunkowania geopolityczne Korei Południowej, które w pewnym zarysie mogą odzwierciedlać stopień dostępności tego kraju dla cudzoziemców i otwartość jego mieszkańców na kultury obce. W dalszej części szkicu podjęto próbę przybliżenia relacji polsko-‑koreańskich na podstawie opublikowanych w Polsce i Korei wydań popularno-naukowych. Analiza wybranych publikacji potwierdza tezę o egzotyce języka polskiego i polskiej kultury w Korei, równocześnie wskazuje na obopólne zainteresowania oraz wyszukiwania miejsc wspólnych w historii i tekstach literackich. Następnie przybliżono recepcję literatury polskiej w Korei jako jedną z możliwości oswajania odległej kultury, historię jedynych do tej pory studiów polskich na Hankuk Univerity of Foreign Studies oraz opisano politykę językową rządu koreańskiego wobec edukacji rzadkich języków obcych. Szkic zawiera również opis projektu, w ramach którego powstała seria podręczników, stanowiących wzbogacenie oferty glottodydaktyki polonistycznej o pomoce skierowane do odbiorców koreańskojęzycznych.
The purpose of this paper is to take a functional look at the culture, literature and language of Poland which is perceived as exotic in the Republic of Korea. In the introduction, the geopolitical conditions of South Korea are outlined, which, to some extent, may reflect the country’s accessibility for foreigners and the openness of its inhabitants to foreign cultures. In the next part of the outline, an attempt is made to introduce Polish-Korean relations on the basis of popular science publications in Poland and Korea. An analysis of selected publications confirms the thesis of the exoticism of Polish language and culture in Korea, whilst at the same time indicating mutual interests and searching for common places in the historical past and in literary texts. Next, the reception of Polish literature in Korea is presented as one of the possibilities of taming a distant culture, as is the history of the only Polish studies course so far at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and the language policy of the Korean government towards the education of rare foreign languages. The outline also includes a description of the project, which involves the creation of a series of textbooks that will enrich the offer of Polish language glottodidactics with material addressed to Korean-speaking audiences.

Twórczość Czesława Miłosza od blisko 40 lat tłumaczona jest na język chiński. Cezurę tę wyznaczył rok 1980, w którym poeta otrzymał literacką Nagrodę Nobla. Celem artykułu jest analiza recepcji twórczości Miłosza przez chińskich czytelników i poznanie związanych z tym kontekstów. Do tej pory w Chinach ukazało się 5 tomów jego poezji. Ponadto przetłumaczono pięć zbiorów esejów i jeden wybór jego esejów angielskich. W historii recepcji utworów polskiego noblisty dają się wyróżnić cztery etapy odzwierciedlające chińskie postrzeganie jego twórczości. Na obecność i sposób jego odbioru w kulturze chińskiej duży wpływ ma recepcja całej literatury wschodnioeuropejskiej w Chinach. Poza chińskimi badaczami literatury polskiej i obcej, twórczością Miłosza interesowali się w latach 90. chińscy poeci szukający w jego poezji inspiracji dla uwspółcześnienia poezji własnej. Słowa kluczowe: recepcja literatury polskiej zagranicą, recepcja twórczości Czesława Miłosza w Chinach.
The works of Czesław Miłosz have been translated into Chinese for about forty years. The turning point is marked by 1980, the year when the poet was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The aim of the paper is to analyse the reception of Czesław Miłosz’s works by Chinese readers and to highlight the contexts associated with them. Until now, five vol-umes of the poet’s poetry have been published in China. In addition, five volumes of essays have been translated from Polish and one from English into Chinese.Reflecting the Chinese perception of Miłosz’s oeuvre, four stages of the reception history of his works can be traced. The presence and reception of the Polish Nobel Prize winner in Chinese culture is strongly influenced by the reception of all Eastern European literature in China. In addition to Chinese researchers of Polish and foreign literature, Miłosz’s works were also of interest to Chinese poets in the 1990s, who sought inspiration in his poetry to contem-porise their own poetry.
Die Werke von Czesław Miłosz werden schon seit ca. vierzig Jahren ins Chinesische übertragen. Die Zäsur markiert das Jahr 1980, als der Dichter mit dem Nobelpreis für Litera-tur ausgezeichnet wurde. Ziel des Aufsatzes ist die Analyse der Rezeption der Werke von Czesław Miłosz von den chinesischen Lesern und die Hervorhebung der damit verbundenen Kontexte. Bis dato erschienen in China 5 Gedichtbände des Dichters. Darüber hinaus wurden 5 Essaybände aus dem Polnischen und einer aus dem Englischen übertragen.Es lassen sich vier Etappen in der Rezeptionsgeschichte von Miłoszs Werken nachweisen, die die chinesische Wahrnehmung seines OEuvre widerspiegeln. Die Präsenz und Rezeption des polnischen Nobelpreisträgers in der chinesischen Kultur ist stark von der Rezeption der gesamten osteuropäischen Literatur in China geprägt. Neben chinesischen Forschern der pol-nischen und ausländischen Literatur waren Miłoszs Werke in den 1990er Jahren auch für chinesische Dichter von Interesse, die in seiner Lyrik Inspiration für die Modernisierung der ei-genen Poesie suchten.

The article provides an overview of Slovenian translations of Polish literature in the 2019’s and 2020’s and reviewers’ responses to these works. A total of 23 translations of books were published in 2019, including five literary works (three collections of poetry and two novels). Among the 13 published translations of the following year there were eight literary works (one drama, a collection of short stories, three novels and three collections of poetry). The publishing of e-books also increased significantly in 2020. The published translations give Slovenian readers access to familiar, mostly world-renowned authors such as O. Tokarczuk, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska, C. Miłosz, I. Karpowicz, while works by I. Ostachowicz, B. Nowicka, A. Kulisiewicz, J. Małecki, R. Franczak, and K. Dąbrowska were translated into Slovenian for the first time. With the exception of J. Kochanowski’s drama, all of the literary works translated were from the second half of the 20th century or the 21st century.
Pregled prevodov poljske književnosti v slovenščino kaže, da je bilo v letu 2019 izdanih 23 knjižnih prevodov, med njimi pet leposlovnih del, tj. tri zbirke poezije in dva romana (poleg tega še 15 otroških/mladinskih knjig in prevodi treh neleposlovnih del). V letu 2020 je opazno pospešeno izdajanje elektronskih knjig, ki je najverjetneje posledica omejene dostopnosti knjižnic in knjigarn v času epidemije koronavirusne bolezni. Izšlo je osem elektronskih knjig, ki so bile v preteklih letih že izdane v fizični obliki, in 13 tiskanih knjig novo prevedenih del. Poleg treh otroških in dveh neleposlovnih, je bilo prevedenih osem leposlovnih del: ena drama, trije romani, ena zbirka kratkih zgodb in tri zbirke poezije. Prevodi prinašajo dela slovenskim bralcem že znanih in večinoma svetovno prepoznavnih avtoric in avtorjev, kot so O. Tokarczuk, Z. Herbert, W. Szymborska, C. Miłosz, I.Karpowicz, prvič pa so bila v slovenščino prevedena dela I. Ostachowicza, B. Nowicke, A.Kulisiewicza, J. Małeckega, R. Franczak in K. Dąbrowske. Z izjemo drame J.Kochanowskega gre za prevode književnosti druge polovice 20.stoletja oz. 21.stoletja, ki so v slovenskih medijih večinoma doživeli recepcijski odziv (z izjemo Kochanowskega in Miłosza), ta je skoraj v vseh primerih zelo pozitiven. Avtorji prevodov leposlovnih del so uveljavljeni prevajalci: J. Unuk, N. Jež, K. Šalamun-Biedrzycka, K. Pisk, med njimi pa se pojavljajo tudi nova imena, kot je J. Snoj. Pomemben medij za objavo prevodov (fragmentov) del v Sloveniji manj prepoznavnih avtoric in avtorjev ter za prve objave mladih prevajalcev so bile tudi v letih 2019 in 2020 tiskane in spletne revije.

Szkic prezentuje najciekawsze/najgłośniejsze polskie książki prozatorskie i poetyckie opublikowane w 2020 roku w celu swoistego podsumowania tego, co działo się na polskim rynku wydawniczym w minionym roku. Autorka próbuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy pandemia koronawirusa w jakiś sposób wpłynęła na pisarki/pisarzy, poetów/poetki i wydawców. Jej celem jest sprawdzenie, jakiego typu literaturę piękną najchętniej wydawano i jacy pisarze/pisarki, poeci/poetki cieszyli się największym zainteresowaniem recenzentów. Krótko analizuje i interpretuje dziesięć wybranych przez siebie książek prozatorskich i poetyckich, pokazując również, jak o nich pisali inni komentatorzy współczesnego życia literackiego.Wybór książek do omówienia oparł się zatem nie tyle na subiektywnych odczuciach autorki, ile przede wszystkim na recepcji. Celem szkicu stało się ponadto zaprezentowanie różnorodności publikacyjnej oraz pokazanie najpopularniejszych tendencji twórczych. Wśród omówionych autorów znaleźli się: Joanna Bator, Konrad Góra, Wioletta Grzegorzewska, Hanna Krall, Natalia Malek, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Marta Podgórnik, Zyta Rudzka, Szczepan Twardoch, Patrycja Sikora, a zatem w większości przypadków autorzy doskonale znani polskiej publiczności czytającej, którzy albo ogłosili swoje nowe książki, albo zaproponowali wybory dotychczasowej swej twórczości. Z przygotowanego zestawienia wynika, że szczególnym uznaniem (także „zawodowych”) czytelników cieszyły się przede wszystkim te utwory, w których twórcy próbowali scalać rozbite tożsamości, powracali do traumatycznej przeszłości, próbując uporządkować „tu i teraz” lub dyskutowali problemy komunikacyjne, a także te opowieści, które określić można mianem zaangażowanych społecznie. Tekst mieści się w obrębie literaturoznawstwa i krytyki literackiej.
The text presents major and the most interesting Polish prose and poetry books published in 2020 in order to review the state of the Polish publishing industry last year and to attempt to answer the question whether the coronavirus pandemic has somehow affected writers, poets, and publishers. The article also asks what type of fiction was most likely to be published and which writers and poets were most popular with reviewers. It briefly analyses and interprets ten prose and poetry books, showing also how other commentators of contemporary literary life have written about them. The selection of books to be discussed is therefore based not so much on the author’s subjective feelings as on reception. The aim of the text is also to underline the diversity of these publications and to show the most popular creative trends. The authors discussed include: Joanna Bator, Konrad Góra, Wioletta Grzegorzewska, Hanna Krall, Natalia Malek, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Marta Podgórnik, Zyta Rudzka, Szczepan Twardoch, and Patrycja Sikora. In most cases, these are authors who are well known to the Polish reading public and who either announced their new books or offered selections of their previous work. The compilation proves that readers (including “professional” ones) especially appreciated those works in which the authors attempted to consolidate shattered identities, returned to a traumatic past in an attempt to order the “here and now”, or discussed communication problems, as well as those stories that could be described as socially engaged. The text is located within the disciplines of literary studies and literary criticism.
