What kind of realism - if any - are we allowed to endorse? It is often stated that, in order to provide realism with a solid foundation, we need having recourse to a reality that is totally independent of thought (and let alone of language). This is taken to be the key thesis of realism. But many philosophers reply that, even when we imagine a world totally devoid of human presence, we must use human concepts. From this point of view, conceptualization does not seem to be an optional we can get rid of, but rather a built-in component of the nature of human beings.

In the article, his author attempted to systematize various concepts and approaches to the issue of security by representatives of political realism. Political realism set out the main directions of thinking about security during the Cold War, however, focusing on the basic elements of the international system, including state security and mechanisms of peace and war, remains the dominant theory of international politics, which is worth reaching for inspiration for the development of security studies. The article presents the main assumptions of a realistic vision of security, the approach to security by representatives of traditional realism and current trends.

Opis:
There has been a great deal of discussion in the recent philosophical literature of the relationship between the minimalist theory of truth and the expressivist metaethical theory. One group of philosophers contends that minimalism and expressivism are compatible, the other group contends that such theories are incompatible. Following Simon Blackburn (manuscript), I will call the former position ‘compatibilism’ and the latter position‘incompatiblism.’ Even those compatibilist philosophers who hold that there is no conflict or tension between these two theories-minimalism and expressivism-typically think that some revision of minimalism is required to accommodate expressivism. The claim that there is such an incompatibility, I will argue, is based on a misunderstanding of the historical roots of expressivism, the motivations behind the expressivist theory, and the essential commitments of expressivism. I will present an account of the expressivist theory that is clearly consistent with minimalism.

Opis:
One of the essential aspects of the dispute between scientific realism and anti-realism is the question of the ontological status of unobservable objects assumed by scientific theories and models. Scientific realism claims that these objects exist in the natural world, while anti-realism denies this. The missing mass problem is a good example of an issue that requires that this question be resolved. In cosmology, this problem is solved by assuming the presence of dark matter and dark energy. The difficulty, however, is that experience does not provide direct evidence for the existence of these two „substances.” In the first part of the article, the differences between scientific realism and anti-realism are discussed. In the second and third parts, the problem of the missing mass is presented (special attention is paid to the difficulties with the empirical confirmation of the existence of dark matter and dark energy). The fourth part of the article discusses the arguments of the supporters of half-realism, which is a kind of compromise between scientific realism and anti-realism.

Opis:
In the paper we argue that no neat border line between ontology and epistemology can be drawn. This is due to the fact that the separation between factual and conceptual is rather fuzzy, and the world is characterized by a sort of ontological opacity which makes the construction of any absolute ontology difficult. Our ontology is characterized by the fact that the things of nature are seen by us in terms of a conceptual apparatus that is inevitably influenced by mind-involving elements, and all this has important consequences on both the question of scientific realism and the realism/anti-realism debate. Conceptualization gives us access to the world, while, on the other, it is the most important feature of our cultural evolution. While the idealistic thesis according to which the mind produces natural reality looks hardly tenable, it is reasonable to claim instead that we perceive this same reality by having recourse to the filter of a conceptual apparatus whose presence is, in turn, connected to the development of language and social organization. Our science is essentially relational, and not absolute. The information with which it provides us is appropriate, but from our point of view. Science provides reliable information on the world, but this information is always relative to a particular framework, and it is a mistake to think that the limits of our cognitive capacities only have an aprioristic character. Science constantly attempts at providing answers to our questions about how things stand in the world, and thus purports to offer reliable information about it. But it should also be recognized that the extent to which science succeeds in accomplishing this task is disputable. What kind of realism, thus, can we actually endorse? Despite what many relativists claim, realism still is an arguable and defendable position. If one asks what difference is made to our knowledge claims if we accept the existence of an extra-conceptual world, the answer is the following: such recognition undermines the diffused anthropocentric stance which identifies reality with our limited knowledge of it.

Two informal arguments are presented in support of this claim. One argument is based on the conclusions from models of quantum mechanics (QM) and cosmology, while the other argument is referred to as incompleteness of epistemic definitions of information. MISR is not associated directly with the structural realism (SR) of the ontic or epistemic kinds, and is only remotely related to the concept of information structural realism (ISR) defined by Floridi.

Połączenie ideologii i architektury w latach 1917-1933 stworzyło konstruktywizm, a w latach 1933-1955 socrealizm.
In the paper the evolution of high standard housing for chosen social group (government functionaries and eminent scientists and artists) in Moscow are presented. The high standard houses were built in all countries but only in Russia they had a very untypical formal expression. The architectural form of these buildings was a result of many factors. The main one was the ideology imposed by the communist party. This movement was called „socialist realism”. Socialist realism became state policy in 1932 when Soviet leader Joseph Stalin promulgated the decree „On the Reconstruction of Literary and Art Organizations” and ended in 1955. After the political changes in 1990 we observed a return to old architectural forms. But now this movement is called - „caprealism” (capitalist realism). In the paper the best examples of this kind of buildings in Moscow are presented.

The aim of this paper is to offer an insight into the phenomenon of multipolarity, a phenomenon that appeared on the global scene after the end of a unipolar moment that has lasted since the early 1990s. The paper is an attempt to present the main thesis of multipolarity as well as the correlation between multipolarity and realism as a theory in international relations. For this purpose, the most important explanatory achievements of realism have been reviewed. This was a springboard for analysing one of the world players and an active participant of the new multipolar order in the form of China, using all the realist instruments suggested, in its relations with selected countries of the Balkan region.

The paper presents three main definitions of theoretical entity: basic definition, definition from unobservability, and ontological definition. These are the definitions of theoretical entity that are most popular and widely accepted by philosophers of science (both realists and antirealists). All these definitions contain significant defects, which lead to unacceptable conclusions. The author also offers an alternative definition from explanation, which avoids the defects of previous definitions. The aim of the paper is to prove that proper definition of theoretical entity is necessary in debates over scientific realism. To make a legitimate claim about the existence of theoretical entities, one should know what theoretical entity really is.

This paper is an attempt to understand Robert E. Lucas’s microfounded models of the 1960-70s as results of a structuralist project. It is argued that the way Lucas derived macroeconomic outcomes from the decisions of market agents is in line with the basic tenet of the semirealist version of structural realism, where structures are conceived as relations emerging between properties of relata under specific conditions. Accordingly, after an overview of semirealism, it is emphasized that in his microfoundations project Lucas formulated the basic decision problem so that large-scale fluctuations could plausibly be traced back to agents’ properties. The transition from Lucas and Rapping’s model of the labor market to Lucas’s monetary island model is described as placing the same decision makers in a setting the specifics of which are in consonance with the assumed actions and interactions of market participants.

Opis:
The article aims at proposing a way of solution to the problem why mathematics is efficient in physics. Its strategy consists in, first, identifying servere reductionisms performed on physical processes in order to have them correspond to mathematics. As this makes it impossible to understand the real relationship between matter and mathematics, a necessary step on the way to an understanding is to abandon the reductionisms from the very outset. Consequently, one is faced with the need of searching for mathematical elements in nature, as if there never had been any successful mathematics in physics. And for this search, one has to rely on experience alone. To this end, the article takes its inspiration from two pillars of Aristotelian philosophy of nature, the notions of ‘substance’ and ‘dynamics’, together with a careful examination of the treasure of accumulated experience in physics. Upon this basis, the hylomorphic structure of elementary particles, which are considered to be at the basis of all material substances, is the source for the most common features of the dynamical order of material things in general. This dynamical order, in turn, is quite likely to be reflected in mathematical terms. This is a novel approach because, at present, the most common framework for dealing with the question of mathematics in physics is Scientific Realism. It addresses the question why the existent physico-mathematical theories are successful. In order to find an answer, it starts from these theories and some methodological considerations, but does not address the question of where these theories stem from. In particular, it does not consider the possibility that these theories might, at least in part, stem from the material things they are referring to. The latter approach is what is suggested here. It is that of Natural Realism, of which Aristotle is an eminent representative.

The attempts were made to juxtapose this model with a new type of masculinity founded on the idea of physical work on the reconstruction of the country, an image of a heroic soldier of the Red Army and the Secret Police functionaries. In the 1960s and 1970s the authors of militia fiction and the works belonging to the so‑called military patriotism referred to this Stalinist concept of masculinity.

This paper addresses the role of epistemology in relation to the bond formation and cohesion of religious groups. Using the theoretical framework outlined by Stephan Fuchs, the author shows that epistemology can be interpreted in a twofold manner. First, it may be an outcome of social relations (cohesive groups produce more realism internally, less cohesive groups generate more constructivism and relativism). Second, conscious use of epistemology can also be an element that stabilizes or destabilizes groups and thus becomes a tool to influence group cohesion. A reflective approach to the social role of epistemology may prove to be an interesting path for sociology of religion in its inquiry into various religious phenomena, such as the rise of religious radicalism or secularization.

Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky, as a representative of the social and domestic trend of realism, always tends to show a panorama of life and to describe it in ethnographic details in space and time. The author’s position appears distinct in the writings of intellectuals. The author’s viewpoint reveals itself not as a solely subjective sense, but as a general significant idea. The choice of the form of an epic tale in Nechuy–Levytsky’s writings about intellectuals was greatly influenced by his tales of country life. Detailed descriptions of the stage, different scenes, and elements which have no direct relevance to the plot, play a significant role in the writings of the intellectual, because of his maximum thoroughness and objectivity. Newsreel narration defined the basic principle of the structure and composition of Nechuy-Levytsky’s works, which are used for the opening and organising images.

There are many pragmatisms, and it is a litle misleading to present this variegated trend of thought as if it were a monolithic doctrine. The founding fathers, too, were all but unanimous. Peirce was not in agreement with James on many issues. Dewey, in turn, did not like various aspects of both Peirce's and James' philosophy, while C.I. Lewis' views on logic were quite diefrent from those held by Dewey. It should not be surprising, then, to find the same amount of disagreement in contemporary neo-pragmatism, where Rescher and Rorty, who both define themselves pragmatists, display diefrent opinions on most subjects. I shall draw some comparisons between the ideas of these two thinkers. As a maetr of fact there are many pragmatisms, so that it is a litle misleading to present this variegated trend of thought as if it were a monolithic doctrine. The founding fathers, too, were all but unanimous. Peirce was not in agreement with James on many issues. Dewey, in turn, did not like various aspects of both Peirce's and James' philosophy, while C.I. Lewis' views on logic were quite diefrent from those held by Dewey. It should not be surprising, then, to find the same amount of disagreement in today neopragmatism, where Rescher and Rorty, who both define themselves pragmatists, display diefrent opinions on most subjects. In the present section we shall draw some sketchy comparisons between the ideas of these two thinkers. Rescher views the contrast between himself and Rorty as a continuation of the struggle between an objective pragmatism (or “pragmatism of the right”) which includes the triad Peirce-Lewis-Rescher, and a subjective one (or “pragmatism of the left”) 1 which comprises James, the early and middle Dewey, and Rorty. The later Dewey assumes, in this picture, a middle-of-the-road position. While Rorty must certainly be praised for both overcoming the linguistic turn and making pragmatism popular again in American philosophy following several decades of relative forgetfulness, Rescher argues that the Rortyan interpretation of pragmatism is too partial. In particular, by taking Rorty too seriously one is led to believe that pragmatism implies relativism. 1 Marsonet, Michele. “Diefrent pragmatist reactions to analytic philosophy.” New Perspectives on Pragmatism and Analytic Philosophy, edited by Rosa M. Opis:
In the culture two theories always appeara: realism and idealism. Yet, in the contemporary philosophy the idealistic theory dominates while realism is excluded. Idealism, howeverm poses danger in the contemporary intellectual culture. This is particularly revealed when thinking about values. Idealism perceives value as a thought or a notion. Realistic philosophy, on the other hand, defines value as the relation between persons. In the culture, values do not last but they are only a sign or a record that people come into relations.

Opis:
Author discussed various theoretical difficulties connected with the concept and dynamics of international system. He claims that many misunderstandings in political science, including inaccurate predictions as well as real-time-analysis, are caused by lack of precise theory of international systems within international relations as well as failure to adapt some concepts regarding systems from General System Theory, Cybernetics, Chaos Theory and Catastrophy Theory (or paradigm of complexity as a whole), that seem to be used with success in other disciplines like biology or physics. The author proposes five essential dimensions where structure of the system could be successfully measured. He argues that systemic approach based on various theories concerning complexity can lead to resolving some essential questions concerning the nature of the system with the most important one concerning mechanisms at various levels of the system, need to be answered.

Opis:
In the article the evolution of Malebranche's views on the existence of the material world has been presented. In the early period of his work he mainly dealt with epistemological and methodological issues. He did not attach much importance to the problem of the existence of the material world. In that period he seemed to completely accept the Cartesian proof of the existence of bodies. In the later period of his work, when he puts the issue in the centre of his reflection, first he subjects the Cartesian proof to criticism and then he justifies the thesis that a rational proof of the existence of the material world is not possible. In the article special attention was paid to the close relation between Malebranche's theory of seeing in God and occasionalism on the one hand and criticism of the Cartesian proof and the method of justifying the thesis about impossibility of giving a rational proof of the existence of the material world. Although Malebranche announces the standpoint that will be later defended by G. Berkeley, but he does not accept it. He brought the certainty about the existence of the material world from the philosophical plane to the religious one: the Holy Writ teaches that God created the world.

The topic of the text is the relationship between the documentary and artistic sides of photography. This issue is related to the problem of “reading” photographs as texts, as well as modeling reality as an object of interpretation. These problems will be presented with reference to the “Kharkov school of social photography”. The history of Kharkov social photography began in the 1960/70s and is associated with such names as: Boris Mikhailov, Yevhen Pavlov, Oleh Malowanyj, Serhij Bratkov and others.
