Opis:
This article presents the results of research into calcareous waste from the production process of oxide propylene. The obtained results show a considerable chemical diversity of calcareous waste with a predominant percentage share of Ca, C and Cl, which are the products of the process. It was shown that the share of calcium bonded in CaCO3 was over 20%, which is indicative of the secondary carbonisation process taking place in the waste. The morphological and structural analyses revealed that the grains had a surface area above 12% and a percentage porosity in the range of 25-35%. The reactivity test made it possible to classify calcareous waste as a material for sorbents of 'satisfactory' sorption properties, insufficient to be effectively used in the power sector. For the stored waste to be reused, it is necessary to improve its sorption abilities through the application of a properly selected activation method.

128 workers, aged 18–57, were investigated with Job Affect Scale (affective job satisfaction), Job Satisfaction Scale (cognitive job satisfaction) and Reactivity Questionnaire to measure general reactivity. Reactivity is not related to cognitive job satisfaction, but it shows positive correlations with intensity of negative affect and negative correlations with intensity of positive affect at work. We can observe connections between the three investigated aspects of job satisfaction only among low reactive workers.

The current work presents the results of seven sorbent samples investigated with respect to SO2 capture. The sorbents’ reactivity and capacity indexes were determined, and the tests were carried out in accordance with the ‘classical’ procedure for limestone sorbents. The reactivity indexes (RIs) of the tested samples were in the range of 2.57 and 3.55 (mol Ca)/(mol S), while the absolute sorption coefficients as determined by the capacity index (CI) varied between 87.9 and 120.6 (g S)/(kg of sorbent). Porosimetric analysis was also carried out and the specific surface area of the samples was found to be between 0.2 and 1.7 m2 /g. The number of micro-, meso- and macro-pores in individual samples was determined from the corresponding pore size distribution histograms, and the values of sorbent RIs and CIs were correlated with the samples’ total porosity and specific surface.

Carbohydrates are known as sources of immunological cross-reactivity of allergenic significance. In celery and in cypress pollen, the major allergens Api g 5 and Cup a 1 are recognised by antisera raised against anti-horseradish peroxidase and by patients' IgE which apparently bind carbohydrate epitopes; mass spectrometric analysis of the tryptic peptides and of their N-glycans showed the presence of oligosaccharides carrying both xylose and core α1,3-fucose residues. Core α1,3-fucose residues are also a feature of invertebrates: genetic and biochemical studies on the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster, the parasitic trematode Schistosoma mansoni and the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans indicate that these organisms possess core α1,3-fucosyltransferases. Various experiments have shown that fucosyltransferases from both fly and worm are responsible in vivo and in vitro for the synthesis of N-glycans which cross-react with anti-horseradish peroxidase; thus, we can consider these enzymes as useful tools in generating standard compounds for testing cross-reactive carbohydrate epitopes of allergenic interest.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienia związane z magazynowaniem wodoru w wyeksploatowanych formacjach geologicznych oraz z możliwością wystąpienia interakcji w układach wodór–skała–woda złożowa. Badania kontaktowe prowadzono z wykorzystaniem: materiału skalnego (rdzeń A) o składzie mineralogicznym – kalcyt 99,6%, kwarc 0,4%; trzech rodzajów gazów o różnych stężeniach wodoru (wodór 100%, mieszanina metanu i wodoru w stosunku 84% obj. do 16% obj. oraz mieszanina metanu i wodoru w stosunku 94% obj. do 6% obj.) oraz wody złożowej opracowanej w laboratorium.
The article presents issues related to hydrogen storage in exploited geological formations and the possibility of interactions in hydrogen–reservoir rock–formation water systems. Contact studies were carried out using rock material (core A) with a mineralogical composition of 99.6% calcite, 0.4% quartz, three types of gases with different concentrations of hydrogen (100% hydrogen, a mixture of methane and hydrogen in a percentage ratio of 84% to 16 % and a mixture of methane and hydrogen in a percentage ratio of 94% to 6%) and formation water developed in the laboratory. The determination of interactions that may occur in a hydrogen-reservoir rock-formation water system was based on simulations of the possibility of precipitation or dissolution of analytes in the system using the PHREEQC program, chromatographic analyses of the gas phase, elemental analyses of core samples using the X-ray fluorescence method (XRF), mineralogical analyses of samples cores using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and physico-chemical analyses of the formation water before and after the tests (ion chromatography and spectrophotometric methods). Simulation of the possibility of precipitation or dissolution of sediments in the hydrogen-core A-formation water system showed a high potential for dissolution of anhydrite and gypsum in the studied formation water under the influence of increasing hydrogen concentration in the system. In addition, in the hydrogen(16%)–core A–formation water and hydrogen(100%)–core A–formation water systems, the presence of hydrogen sulphide was found after contact tests in the amount of 1.74 mg/dm3 and 5.98 mg/dm3 , respectively. The elemental and mineralogical analyses of the cores showed no significant changes in their composition after contact with hydrogen, while the physical and chemical analysis of the formation water confirmed the possibility of hydrogen affecting the rock material and the formation water. Based on the conducted contact tests, it was found that the higher the concentration of hydrogen in the gas, the greater the likelihood of interactions between hydrogen, rock material and formation water.

Opis:
In this paper, the reasons why nanometer RDX showed lower sensitivity than micro RDX is discussed. Herein we supposed two factors affect the sensitivity of nanometer RDX. Firstly, according detonation physics models, a nanometer particle size results in small hot spots and a high critical temperature. These features suggested high safety for nanometer RDX based on the hot spot theory. A further factor is the thermal reactivity of nanometer RDX, which considerably affects the safety of nanometer energetic materials. Employing the Kinetic Compensation Effect, we calculated the kinetic parameters of micro and nanometer RDX. The results indicated that there was no obvious distinction between the activation energies of micro and nanometer RDX, which implies almost the same reactivity of micro and nanometer RDX. Incorporating the results of small hot spots, high critical temperature, and the unchanged reactivity of micro and nanometer RDX, we concluded that nanometer RDX should exhibit low sensitivity as an intrinsic feature.

The aim of the study was to examine the effects of emotional reactivity and support from different sources for the well-being of teenagers on different stages of development. Data on emotional reactivity, perceived social support from different sources and subjective well-being (SWB) was gathered from 180 younger and 135 older adolescents. Regression analyses included emotional reactivity and social support from different sources as predictors of SWB (positive affect, negative affect and life satisfaction). Analyses showed that emotional reactivity predicted all components of SWB. Support was a signifi cant predictor for positive affect and satisfaction, but its specifi c functions depended on age group and its analyzed source. Interaction effects of support with emotional reactivity were signifi cant only among older adolescents - positive affect depended on interaction between emotional reactivity and support from friends, life satisfaction depended on interplay between emotional reactivity and support from teachers.

Opis:
Synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) has gained considerable attention in regenerative medicine over recent decades. It is widely used as a bone filler and constituent of various biomaterials. HA possesses high biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, bioactivity, and bioresorbability. There are many different synthesis methods for HA described in the available literature. It is worth noticing that even slight changes in pH, reaction conditions or chemical composition during synthesis, can influence biological, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of resultant HA. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of sintering temperature of hydroxyapatite on biological and physicochemical properties of biomaterial made of alginate and hydroxyapatite granules. Alginate/HA material was produced using HA sintered at temperature of 800oC and HA sintered at temperature of 1150oC. Microstructure of the fabricated biomaterials was visualized by SEM. Osteoblast growth on the composites was assessed using human foetal osteoblast cell line. Moreover, ion reactivity, plasma/serum protein adsorption ability as well as water/NaCl uptake capability of the biomaterials were compared. Obtained results demonstrated that although both biomaterials had the same chemical composition, composite comprising hydroxyapatite sintered at temperature of 1150oC had smoother surface, revealed lower ion reactivity, was more favourable to osteoblast growth, and adsorbed lower amount of fibrinogen (which is known to promote biomaterial-induced inflammatory response), compared to the material made of hydroxyapatite sintered at temperature of 800oC. Thus, the type of bioceramics used for the production of biomaterials should be tailored to their specific applications – bone fillers for primarily in vivo implantation or in vitro cell-seeded scaffolds.

High-temperature interaction of liquid Gd in contact with dense, polycrystalline TiO2 substrate, was investigated. Wettability and reactivity tests were carried out at two different temperatures (1362°C and 1412°C) in flowing gas (Ar, 850−900 hPa) using the sessile drop method and classical contact heating of the examined couple of materials. The procedure was combined with a drop pushing procedure. During high temperature studies, images of the Gd/TiO2 couple were continuously recorded by a high-resolution CCD camera. The results of wettability tests of liquid gadolinium on titanium dioxide substrate show that the Gd/TiO2 system is non-wettable at both test temperatures (in either case the final contact angle was 100°). The results of structure examinations on the cross-sectioned samples show the dissolution of the TiO2 substrate in liquid Gd and the presence of two sublayers at the drop/substrate interface: Gd2TiO5 (from the drop side) and Gd2Ti2O7 (from the substrate side).

Important issue in the perspective of nuclear energy development in the near future is the partitioning and transmutation (P&T) of spent nuclear fuel. For years the European Commission (EC) has sponsored this scientific activity through the Framework Programmes (FP). One of the milestones for P&T is the development of accelerator driven systems (ADS). Extensive research in this field was carried out within the EUROTRANS project of 6th FP of EURATOM. Part of this research was devoted to testing and development of reactivity monitoring techniques in ADS. This paper concerns the methods of the reactivity measurement using the pulsed neutron source (PNS). Due to the fact that basic methods devoted to determine the core reactivity are derived from point kinetics, while real subcritical core kinetics differs from this model, there is a need to improve these methods in order to deal with the observed spatial effects. There are several ways to make these methods work properly and finally it should be possible to achieve this. However, they still need a validation which is supposed to be done within next FP project FREYA.

An implicit memory advantage for angry faces was investigated in this experiment by means of an additional cueing task. Participants were to assess the orientation of a triangle's peak, which side of presentation was cued informatively by angry and neutral face stimuli, after which they immediately completed an unexpected “old-new” task on a set of the previously presented faces and new, distractor-faces. Surprisingly, the RTs were similarly long on the invalid trials for angry and neutral facial cues in the Posner task. However, performance on the “old-new” task was better for angry than neutral faces. A strong correlation between RTs in angry-invalid trials and confidence ratings for these angry faces was observed only in highly reactive participants. These results suggest that presentation of threatening material can induce enhanced incidental encoding which can result in stronger familiarity for such material, and this effect is driven by attentional bias in highly reactive individuals.
