Opis:
In order to investigate the mechanism of adsorption of reactive dyes from the textile industry on ash from heating plant produced by brown coal combustion, some characteristic sorption constants are determined using Langergren adsorption equations for pseudo-first and pseudo-second order. Combined kinetic models of pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order can provide a simple but satisfactory explanation of the adsorption process for a reactive dye. According to the characteristic diagrams and results of adsorption kinetic parameters of reactive dyes on ashes, for the applied amounts of the adsorbents and different initial dye concentrations, it can be concluded that the rate of sorption is fully functionally described by second order adsorption model. According to the results, the rate constant of pseudo-second order decreases with increasing initial dye concentration and increases with increasing amount of adsorbent – ash.

Opis:
The adsorption of three reactive dyes (Reactive Bezactiv Yellow (RBY), Reactive Bezactiv Blue (RBB) and Reactive Bezactiv (RBR)) on a commercially available activated carbon (CAC) has been evaluated. It was shown that CAC is capable to effectively remove these dyes from a solution. The adsorption increased with higher contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial dye concentration. The data indicated that the adsorption kinetics of dyes on CAC followed a pseudo-second order model. The adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir isotherm model. Evaluation of thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process is endothermic for all dyes and spontaneous in a single system and became spontaneous in mixture systems at high temperature, expect RBY and RBB in the ternary mixture. Adsorption was higher for RBY, followed by RBB, and was lowest for RBR. The total adsorption efficiency was confirmed by chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurements.

Opis:
The main problems in the case of the undergorund coal gasificiation process is the possible pollution of surrounding aquifers. The underground gasification cavity is a source of both gaseous and liquid pollutants and these are mainly aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, heavy metals and others. In order to prevent underground water from pollution a permeable reactive barrier was proposed. The filling was granulated activated carbon and SPILL-SORB (peat) – two commonly available sorbents adequate for hydrocarbons removal. The wastewater (synthetic solution which simulated groundwater contaminated with the UCG products) was prepared by mixing distilled water with desired amounts of substances such as phenols, benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene etc. Batch tests were performed in order to measure sorption of phenols and benzene from the post-UCG water on the mentioned sorbents. Experimental results were fitted with linear and non-linear Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The obtained data showed that removal of phenols and benzene in case of GAC was much more efficient. However, sorption was lower than in the case of literature data and can be explained by complex composition of the solution and pre-treatment of the samples. The Langmuir model gave a better fit in the case of GAC, whereas Freundlich isotherm model was matching the data better in case of SPILL-SORB.

Opis:
In the present study the adsorption of Reactive Blue 19 dye on the hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanopowders was investigated. The batch adsorption experiments were performed by monitoring the adsorbent dosage, contact time, dye solution concentration, pH and temperature. At pH 3 and 20ºC, high dye removal rates of about 95.58% and 86.95% for the uncalcined and calcined nanohydroxyapatites, respectively, were obtained. The kinetic studies indicated the dye adsorption onto nanohydroxyapatite samples to follow a pseudo-second order model. The Langmuir isotherm was found to be the best to represent the equilibrium with experimental data. The maximum adsorption capacity of uncalcined and calcined nanohydroxyapatite samples has been found to be 90.09 mg/g and 74.97 mg/g, respectively.

Opis:
The paper presents physicochemical studies of nine reactive materials for removing phosphorus from wastewater and water. The materials under analysis are raw forms of marl and travertine along with their thermally treated forms at temperatures of 500 °C, 650 °C, 700 °C (travertine), 700 °C, 900 °C, 1000 °C (marl) and the commercial material Polonite®. The scope of the research included morphological analysis and elemental composition, specific surface area, pore volume and diameter, losses on ignition and the amount of elements leached from materials. The results of the research allowed assessing the impact of physicochemical properties and thermal modification on the efficiency of phosphorus binding by these materials. All the tested sorbents show the highest calcium content among the elements with the ability to bind phosphorus. The size of the specific surface does not determine the efficiency of phosphorus retention by the tested materials; therefore it is advisable to study the mechanism of its binding. The thermal modification process, along with the increase in the treatment temperature, improves the regularity of marl and travertine structures, which also manifests itself in increasing the efficiency of phosphorus removal.

Odpady powstające w procesach wydobycia i oczyszczania węgla mogą stanowić zagrożenie środowiska wodno--gruntowego w przypadku braku odpowiednich zabezpieczeń. W pracy przeanalizowano i przebadano możliwości usuwania z infiltrujących wód jonów następujących pierwiastków: As, B, Ba i Sr. Zróżnicowane pod względem właściwości chemicznych i interakcji w środowisku wodnym wymagają selektywnego doboru składu i struktury bariery.
Wastes, as a byproduct of coal mining and conditioning, could cause serious groundwater contamination danger when introduced to environment without appropriate protection. It is especially true in using such wastes for reclamation and leveling purposes. Contaminants release from deposits can be stopped or at least highly limited by use of permeable and semi-permeable reactive barriers. The possibilities of removal of As, B, Ba and Sr ions from infiltrating water were investigated. Diversity of chemical properties and interactions in water environment requires selective selection of barrier's construction materials and structure. Upon experimental data and results of mathematical modeling with PHREEQC and self developed code, a system of reactive barriers was designed, addressing each of mentioned elements.

Opis:
In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of Reactive Black 5 dye adsorption onto chitin and chitosan flakes. Adsorption capacity of chitin and chitosan, optimal pH of the adsorption process and reaction equilibrium time were determined. Results achieved were described with Freundlich, Langmuir and double Langmuir models. The pH value ensuring the highest dye adsorption effectiveness onto chitosan was pH 4. In turn, the highest dye adsorption effectiveness onto chitin was determined at pH 2, however considering that the pH value of industrial wastewater containing reactive dyes ranges from pH 3 to pH 4, further analyses with chitin were continued at pH 3. The time needed to reach the equilibrium concentration of dye was 360 min for chitin and 72 hours for chitosan. The study demonstrated that chitosan is the most effective sorbent of RB5. Its maximum adsorption capacity of the reactive dye accounted for 696.99 mg/g d.m., compared to 131.56 mg/g d.m. determined for chitin. Higher effectiveness of RB5 removal by chitosan is result of more number of amine groups in the chemical structure of this polymer, compared to chitin.

Opis:
This study was aimed at determining the feasibility of using compost as an unconventional sorbent for dyes removal from aqueous solutions. Compost applied in the study was a product of sewage sludge composting with plant residues (birch wood chips and rapeseed straw). Experiments were conducted for two anionic reactive dyes: Reactive Yellow 84 [RY84] (1701 g/mol – λmax = 357.5 nm) and Reactive Black 5 [RB5] (991 g/mol – λmax = 600.0 nm), and for two cationic dyes: Basic Green 4 [BG4] (365 g/mol – λmax = 618.0 nm) and Basic Violet 10 [BV10] (479 g/mol – λmax = 547.5 nm). The scope of the study included: determination of the optimal pH value of dyes adsorption onto compost, determination of equilibrium time of dyes sorption onto compost, determination of the maximum sorption capacity of the analyzed dyes on compost. During each experiment, sorbent concentration in the solution was at 5 g d.m./dm3. The concentration of dye remaining in the solution was determined with the spectrophotometric method on a UV-VIS SP 2000 spectrophotometer. Analyses were conducted at a room temperature – T = 22°C. The pH value of solutions was adjusted with aqueous solutions of HCl and NaOH. Sorption of the anionic reactive dyes RY84 and RB5 was the most effective at pH = 3. The optimal pH value of cationic dyes sorption was established at pH = 5. At a high pH value (pH = 9), the sorption of each type of dye was impaired due to partial solubilization of the compost sorbent. The equilibrium time of dyes sorption on compost accounted for 180 min in the case of RY84, RB5 and BG4, and for 240 min in the case of BV10 – 240 min. Analyses of the maximum sorption capacity of the selected dyes on compost were carried out already after establishing the optimal pH value of the sorption process for each dye. Results obtained were described with the use of two sorption models: a heterogenous Langmuir 2 model (double Langmuir equation), and a heterogenousFreundlich model. The Langmuir 2 model showed the best fit to experimental data (R2> 0.99). Due to the presence of functional groups -COOH and -OH, compost is negatively charged in aqueous solutions owing to which it prefers compounds with a positive charge (cationic dyes) during sorption. Electrostatic repulsion significantly impairs the adsorption of anionic dyes. The maximum sorption capacity of compost in the case of RY84 and RB5 reached 2.15 mg/g d.m. and 4.79 mg/g d.m., whereas in the case of BG4 and BV10 – 26.41 mg/g d.m. and 27.20 mg/g d.m., respectively. Results of the maximum sorption capacity of dyes on compost were referred to results obtained with other unconventional and cheap sorbents.

Jako adsorbent, zaproponowano wykorzystać popioły lotne, które stanowią użyteczny odpad z elektrowni i elektrociepłowni. Koncepcja ta umożliwi wyeliminowanie technologicznych problemów związanych z regeneracją adsorbentu, a jednocześnie poprzez trwałe związanie CO2 zapewni ograniczenie emisji tego gazu do atmosfery.
Idea of hydrogen production with simultaneous CO2 sequestration is presented in the paper. The application of the integrated reactive adsorption process is proposed. The use of fly ashes from power plants as well as from combined power and heat plants are recommended for this purpose. This idea helps to eliminate technological problems with adsorbent regeneration and simultaneously to reduce the C02 emission to atmosphere.
