    In this paper we present our approaches and results concerning application of molecular modelling techniques in the design of new chemotherapeutic agents for the control of eukariotic systems, comprising compounds for the treatment of systemic fungal infections and tumor deseases. In the case of anti-tumor agents we focused our attention on molecular properties of natural and synthetic anthraquinones. In the area of antifungal compounds we adopted two approaches. In one of them we examine molecular nature of undesirable properties of polyene macrolide antifungal antibiotic - amphotericin B using molecular modelling techniques. Another approach was aimed at the development of selective inactivator of glucosamine synthase, a novel target for antifungal compounds. In this problem we have used computational chemistry methods to identify structural features responsible for the selective inactivation of the target enzyme.

    Chemical structure determines the inherent properties displayed by a given compound, and these properties, in turn, produce a specifc performance behavior. Rationally designing chemical structure to predictably modify compound properties, such that performance behavior can be tailored in a controlled manner, defnes the objective of a pertinent synthesis effort. Achieving this objective by introducing structural alterations in a neutral covalent compound offers only one approach for resultant properties modifcation. Heterocyclic salts signifcantly enhance the fexibility for achieving properties modifcation via three strategic approaches: (1) compositionally pairing various cation structural classes with a number of anion structural classes, (2) systematically altering the structure of the cation; and, (3) systematically altering the structure of the anion. To illustrate this premise, four general synthesis methods to synthesize heterocyclic salts, including several new binary heterocyclium icosahedral closo-borane and closo- carborane salts, frst are outlined. Secondly, properties modifcation approaches of neutral covalent compounds are then compared with those approaches available for various heterocyclic salts. Lastly, a key example, using three unsaturated bridged heterocyclium di-cation salts, demonstrates how rational structure design, and its effect on resultant predictable properties modifcation, produces tailored performance behavior to reach the thermochemical initiation threshold needed for combustion. This is achieved with predictable properties modifcations that increase salt energy content, or that accelerate the reaction kinetics of the thermochemical initiation process.

    Designing a warehouse layout is an important problem, which plays a role in a life cycle of a company. Generally, two main types of layout decision problems are mentioned in literature. The first problem is usually called facility layout problem while the second one is internal layout designing problem or aisle configuration problem. Merging them both, the procedure for rational searching of optimal warehouse layout is prepared. It was decided to prepare the procedure as an optimisation procedure of functional and spatial areas. The procedure is a part of the logistics facilities designing method because a sketch layout of logistics facility is an important part of the method of logistic facilities designing. The paper briefly describes the location of the procedure in the method. Regarding functional and spatial layouts designing, model was expanded with mathematical formulas of certain geometrical parameters. Particular emphasis on warehouse geometry is important due to the fact that many other issues depend on these parameters in warehouse designing process. The paper consists of a problem definition, mathematical model formulation and precise descriptions adequate to mathematic notations. What is more, the example of procedure application implemented into the software is given. The software is the implementation of the procedure and the whole method itself.

    This paper examines the sustainability concept and its use in planning policies and regulations to guide future urban development and urban design. It provides a brief historical overview starting with the Rio Declaration and the imperative concerning the need for adapting the urban environment for efficient use of renewable resources. The paper includes an outline of planning and its transition from industrialism to the rational planning process. It refers to the well-known BedZED zero emission projects as an example of a comprehensive sustainable housing estate. Finally, the discussion paper “12 Green Guidelines” is used as a basis to compare the sustainable urban design regulations in the Victorian Planning Provisions (VPPs) for Melbourne, Australia. A cursory evaluation of the VPPs has found them to be vague with little detail and directives on how they can achieve sustainable design outcomes. Consistency in decisions is also rained because of the problem concerning discretion and interpretation. The paper concludes with a proposed research agenda for measuring the effectiveness of sustainable design principles in terms of outcomes that can deliver an environmentally efficient urban form.

    W ciągu ostatnich dwóch stuleci „racjonalne myślenie” było ciągle żywe w architekturze, nawet jeśli istniało w różnych formach; było przywoływane w architekturach, które również bardzo się od siebie różnią. Z drugiej strony, rzadko przywoływano wartości związane z intuicją. Intuicja nie jest jednak przeciwieństwem rozumu. Intuicja pojawia się pierwsza, rozum zaś symbolizuje „jak”. Rezultatem jest coś innego. Intuicja może dostarczyć pomysłów, rozum może dostarczyć wyjaśnień. Wyjaśnienia mogą być a priori, jeśli służą do podejmowania decyzji lub a posteriori, jeśli służą nadawaniu znaczenia całości. Oba wskazują metodę, a nie rezultat. Nie są prawdziwymi przeciwieństwami. Brak intuicji niekoniecznie jest pozbawiony pomysłów; a brak rozsądku różni się od bycia wbrew rozsądkowi... Nie sądzę, by istniały jakieś intuicyjne, a nawet racjonalne architektury, i widzimy tego wiele przykładów w ostatnich stuleciach. Być może lepiej jest unikać szaleństwa rozumu, ale rozsądne szaleństwo jest czasem najlepszym, na co możemy liczyć.
    In the last two centuries, “rational thinking” has been continuously alive in architecture, even if in different forms; it has been recalled for architectures that are also very different from each other. Intuition-related values, on the other hand, have rarely been mentioned. But intuition is not in contrast to reason. Intuition comes first, reason represents “how”. The result is something else. Intuition can provide ideas, reason can provide explanations. The explanations can be a priori if they serve to make decisions, or a posteriori if they serve to give meaning to the whole. Both indicate the method, not the result. They have no real opposition. Lack of intuition is not necessarily void of ideas, and lack of reason is different from against reason... I don’t think there are any intuitional or even rational architectures, and we can see a number of examples in recent centuries. Perhaps it is better to avoid the madness of reason, but reasonable folly is sometimes the best we can hope for.

    The solutions to the Rational Covariance Extension Problem (RCEP) are parameterized by the spectral zeros. The rational filter with a specified numerator solving the RCEP can be determined from a known convex optimization problem. However, this optimization problem may become ill-conditioned for some parameter values. A modification of the optimization problem to avoid the ill-conditioning is proposed and the modified problem is solved efficiently by a continuation method.

Stało się to możliwe dzięki wizji związanej z międzynarodowym kontekstem, ale także za pośrednictwem takich architektów i uczonych jak Gio Ponti, Franco Albini, BBPR, Diotallevi i Marescotti, i ich swoistej włoskiej interpretacji tematu „domu człowieka” / „domu dla ludzi”.
    The essays focuses on how, between the end of the Twenties and the end of the Forties, in Italy there has been a deep reflection and investigation about the interior space of the house, and its qualities. Through exhibitions, publications, and some realizations, the Italian architects dealt with the issue of the domestic space and its different aspects: compositional, technical, economic, social. That happened thanks to a vision related to the international scenario, but also, thanks to architects and scholars such as Gio Ponti, Franco Albini, BBPR, Diotallevi and Marescotti, with a peculiar Italian interpretation of the “house of man”/”house for people” topic.

    W pracy rozważono problem optymalnego kształtowania racjonalnej osi łuków dwuprzegubowych. Zadanie dotyczy poszukiwania optymalnego kształtu osi łuku oraz optymalnej wysokości przekroju poprzecznego, zapewniającej minimum objętości konstrukcji przy równoczesnym spełnieniu warunku stanu bezmomentowego konstrukcji oraz przy ograniczeniu naprężeń normalnych. Sterowanie optymalne wyznaczono w oparciu o zasadę maksimum Pontriagina. Ostatecznie, zadanie optymalizacji sprowadzono do wielopunktowego problemu brzegowego i rozwiązano numerycznie przy wykorzystaniu programu Dircol.
    The paper presents the optimal modelling problem of the rational centre line of two-hinged arches (Fig. 1). Design of a statically indeterminate arch of the momentless centre line is an innovative element of the work. The problem consists in finding the optimal shape of the arch centre line and the optimal height of the cross-section ensuring the minimal arch volume at the simultaneous satisfying of the construction momentless state condition and the limitation of normal stresses. The optimisation problem formal structure consists of the state equations, the boundary conditions and the limiting conditions. The optimal control was determined on the basis of the Pontryagin's Principle (Subsection 2.2). Finally the optimisation problems were reduced to the multipoint boundary-value problem and solved numerically by using the Dircol software [3]. The numerical results for the optimisation task with one control function (the arch curvature), without limitations of the arch length (Subsection 3.1) and with the set arch length (Subsection 3.2) were obtained. The optimisation problem with introduced the second control function ( the cross-section height) was also considered (Section 4). The optimal course of the rational centre line of the arch of the length sopt=20,70 (Fig. 2, 3, 4) was obtained regarding minimisation of the volume. The received results (Fig. 5, Tab.1) show the possibility of obtaining the momentless state in the case of statically indeterminate systems for different arch lengths greater from the optimal one s >sopt.
