Opis:
Deptford pink Dianthus armeria L. is a representative of Caryophyllaceae family. It is plant species that is strictly protected since 2014. In the local Red List for the Silesian Province it was considered an endangered species. During 2023-2024 fieldwork was done that aimed to update the list of the localities of this species in the Cieszyn Foothills region. The locality was marked on the map using methodological assumptions of Atlas of Distribution of Vascular Plants in Poland. The density of population was counted or estimated. As a result of the field studies in the study area 9 localities (a total of 17 local populations) of Dianthus armeria were found in grassland, meadow, fringe and ruderal communities. Totally 8 localities were new to this area. Only localities from Tuł Mt has been known earlier. There were also the highest abundance of population, estimated at 600-700 individuals but population contain several small populations that amounting from tens to several hundreds of plants. Two populations are in Cisownica village and they occupy slopes of two local mountains: Kopieniec Mt (475 m a.s.l.) and Malcowa Mt (510 m a.s.l.). In Cieszyn population grows close to the nature reserve “Kopce”, and ecological use are “Łąki na kopcach”. In Leszna Górna village populations occupy xerothermic grasslands. The other situation is Górki Wielkie where the species grows in ruderal habitats: levees along Brennica river and in the vicinity of market. The other human-made habitats which were grown by Dianthus armeria were found in Puńców. These ones were abandoned quarry of dolomites and the vicinity of sports field but close to the fring of oak-hornbeam forest. In general, the population in the Cieszyn Foothills, size ranged from a few individuals to approximately several hundred. The lack of accurate data from previous years does not allow to assess the dynamics of the distribution and abundance of this species. Based on the general trends of Dianthus armeria in Poland, the population status appears to be satisfactory.

Opis:
The species of downy willow (Salix lapponum) and swamp willow (Salix myrtilloides) are extremely rare relicts among all members of the genus Salix. In Poland, they occur only in the eastern part of the Karkonosze Mountains, Masurian Lake District, and Polesie Lubelskie area. A huge threat to both species is the drainage of peat bogs and their excessive exploitation as well as diseases caused by bacteria and fungi. The present study aimed identify fungal species colonizing the aboveground organs of plants with disease symptoms and to indicate which species may pose a threat towards S. lapponum and S. myrtilloides growing under natural conditions. This research was conducted in Polesie National Park as a part of a research project by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Plant health assessments were carried out in natural habitats, while aboveground organs with disease symptoms were collected for laboratory mycological analysis. Colletotrichum salicis (teleomorph Glomerella salicis), Coniothyrium concentricum, Cylindrosporium salicinum, Phomopsis spp., Truncatella angustata, and Cytospora chrysosperma (teleomorph Valsa sordida) were the fungal species most frequently isolated from leaves and shoots of both willow species. The above-mentioned fungi are dangerous plant pathogens from the family Salicaceae. There were no obligatory parasites or monophagous pathogens on the aboveground organs of downy or swamp willow. Obligatory parasites may indicate a markedly low population of host plants in Polish conditions.

Opis:
The studies were conducted in the years 2005 and 2017 using the Braun-Blanquet method. The objective of studies was to investigate the condition of the grassland vegetation, including the presence of rare and endangered plant species in the Middle Wieprz Valley (PLH060005). The investigation in this area concerned the vegetation of rush meadows, wet and fresh meadows, and the presence of characteristic rare and endangered species in the communities under study. A Natura 2000 area (PLH060005) comprises a mosaic of land and water habitats and such a pattern of natural environment conditions favours the occurrence of varied plant associations. However, the extensive utilization of meadows or the lack of it pose a serious threat in the Middle Wieprz Valley to plant communities. The previously investigated rush communities as well as wet and fresh meadow communities are currently monitored to evaluate changes in vegetation of the studied grasslands. Principal Component Analysis was used to examine the changes in the percentage share of various characteristic species in three different types of communities between 2005 and 2017. The results of the currently conducted phytosociological survey indicate that the smallest changes in the floristic composition of the sward occur in the rush and wet meadow communities although fluctuations of the number of some plant species can be observed there. The more important changes in the species composition of meadow sward were confirmed in the following associations of the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class: Ass. Lolio-Cynosuretum R.Tx. 1937, Ass. Cirsietum rivularis NOWIŃSKI 1927 and lower changes in the assotiation of the Arrhenatheretum elatioris BR.-BL. ex SCHERR. 1925. Analyzing the differences in the species composition of the sward that occurred in the studied communities between 2005 and 2017, it can be concluded that the biggest changes concern the Lolio-Cynosuretum association. A considerably greater presence of species characteristic of the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class was found in the sward of this association in 2017 in comparison with the state of the vegetation cover in 2005. A similar trend, but with less distinct changes, can be observed in the Cirsietum rivularis association where an increasing proportion of characteristic species of the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class was confirmed. In the period under study, no significant changes in the vegetation cover of the Arrhenatheretum elatoris association were found, as evidenced by the distribution of points corresponding to the particular sites of this community, covering similar areas in both years compared. However, sward condition of this plant association was not good enough in the previous study period. Among species from studied grassland communities in the Middle Wieprz Valley, the following species were very rarely occurring: Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) SOÓ, Dactylorhiza majalis s.l. (Rchb.) P.F. Hunt et Summerh., Dianthus superbus L. ssp. superbus, Orchis militaris L., Lathyrus palustris L., Tragopogon pratensis L. ssp. orientalis (L.) Čelak, Cirsium rivulare (Jacq.) All. and Cynosurus cristatus L. The lack of utilization of the sward for pasturage has probably contributed to the considerably decreased numbers of the characteristic species Cynosurus cristatus. In the study area, this species can be regarded as very rare, even vulnerable, if the community for this association is not placed under active protection.
Badania przeprowadzono w latach 2005 i 2017 metodą Braun-Blanqueta w Dolinie Środkowego Wieprza (PLH060005). Obszar Natura 2000 (PLH060005) stanowi mozaikę środowisk lądowych i wodnych, a taki układ warunków środowiska sprzyja występowaniu różnorodnych zespołów roślinnych. Bardziej znaczące zmiany w składzie gatunkowym runi łąkowej potwierdzono w następujących zespołach roślinnych klasy Molinio-Arrhenatheretea: Lolio-Cynosuretum R.Tx. 1937, Cirsietum rivularis NOWIŃSKI 1927 i mniejsze zmiany w zespole Arrhenatheretum elatioris BR.-BL. ex SCHERR. 1925. (Rchb.) P.F. Hunt et Summerh., Dianthus superbus L. ssp. superbus, Orchis militaris L., Lathyrus palustris L., Tragopogon pratensis L. ssp. orientalis (L.) Čelak, Cirsium rivulare (Jacq.) All. i Cynosurus cristatus L. Brak pastwiskowego użytkowania runi przyczynił się prawdopodobnie do znacznego spadku liczebności gatunku charakterystycznego – Cynosurus cristatus L. W badanym rejonie gatunek ten można uznać jako bardzo rzadki, a nawet narażony na wyginięcie, jeśli zbiorowisko tego zespołu nie zostanie objęte czynną ochroną.

Opis:
Changes in the herbaceous layer (vascular plants), taking place between 1959 and 2016 on the permanent study plot in the compartment 319 of the Strict Reserve in the Białowieża National Park are presented. Zaręba [1972] presented phytosociological research carried out in 1959 on the 1.2 ha plot. The author established 10 relevés (size between 100 and 400 m2), in which in total 91 different species of vascular plants were noted. In 2016, the similar study was conducted, using slightly modified methods (the inventory of plants involved the total area of the study plot). The comparison of data recorded during both investigations revealed that the total number of plant species declined from the initial 91 to current 83. During the ca. 60−year long period, 43 plant species disappeared completely and were replaced by 35 new species. In the declining group, almost the half (20) were species important from the point of view of nature conservation, including four Red List species (Arnica montana, Goodyera repens, Lathyrus laevigatus, Trolius europaeus), 10 plant species protected by law, and several other precious species related to rare and declining woodland community types. The obtained results confirm the findings of other authors describing unfavourable changes in the flora of the Białowieża Forest during the past several tens of years. The floristic richness is an important part of the overall biodiversity of Białowieża Forest. It appears that strict protection does not secure the maintenance of this key component. Thus, an attempt to preserve diverse values of Białowieża Forest on a sustainable basis should, first of all, look for a proper balance between strict and active protection. The later can (and should) be integrated within the multifunctional forest management, conducted on the prevailing area of the Białowieża Forest.

Semenov’s Fir (Abies semenovii B. Fedtsch.) is an extremely rare species in the wild and is included in the International Red List of Conifers and into the Red Data Books of the former USSR and Kyrgyz Republic. Our investigation confirms that this is an independent species, related but not identical to Abies sibirica Ledeb. It has been cultivated at Peter the Great Botanic Garden of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science(s), St.Petersburg, since 1949. Apparently, it was here that Semenov’s Fir was first introduced into cultivation in European gardens. It has produced seeds since 2000, when it was less than 43 years old. It is a hardy and ornamental tree that deserves wider distribution in cultivation in the gardens and parks of North-West Russia. It is proposed that Semenov’s Fir should be given independent taxonomic status as a separate species, Abies semenovii B. Fedtsch.

Opis:
In Poland, like in other parts of Central Europe, dry grasslands significantly contribute to the biodiversity of both fauna and flora. Anthropogenic pressure impair many species of xerothermic habitats, and several populations face an increased risk of extinction. The goal of the study was to define factors that may affect the size of wild populations of Anemone sylvestris L., a protected species in Poland, with both a short- and long-term perspective, and to examine the influence of vegetation changes on the density, the abundance of flowering and male function (pollen production, pollen viability), as well as seed set. In situ observations were performed in 2005-2006 and 2011-2012 in three populations located on the Lublin Upland, SE Poland. The reduction in population density and A. sylvestris blooming was exacerbated by the expansion of the shrubs, but not by Brachypodium pinnatum. Male characteristics of A. sylvestris, i.e. pollen amount per multi-staminate flowers or pollen viability appeared to decrease under pressure of shrub competition. Populations with limitation of male function had impaired degree of seed set. Various consequences for the functioning of populations within a metapopulation system can be expected due to substantial qualitative and quantitative disorders in pollen traits. It is crucial that successful recovery programs for A. sylvestris primary should aim to conserve and manage the habitat.

Opis:
It was proposed previously that passive dispersal by migratory aquatic birds explain the widespread distribution of many wetland organisms. Several experimental studies have shown that many widespread wetland plant species can be readily dispersed within the guts of Anatidae. However, it is unclear whether plants with a more restricted distribution are able to disperse via waterbirds. This paper addresses the dispersal ability and germination ecology of the little-known Hungarian milkvetch Astragalus contortuplicatus, which occurs on banks of continental rivers and has a limited and unpredictable distribution. To test whether limited capacity for endozoochory by waterfowl could explain the sporadic appearance of this species, we force-fed ten captive mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) with 100 milkvetch seeds each. Droppings were collected for up to 45 h after feeding. Intact and viable seeds were found in the droppings of each mallard, and altogether 24.7% of seeds fed were recovered intact. The proportion of retrieved seeds that germinated (27.0%) was significantly higher than that of untreated control seeds (0.5%), but significantly lower than that of mechanically scarified seeds (96.0%). Retrieved seeds that germinated developed into healthy mature plants. Given the average flight velocity of mallards, seeds of A. contortuplicatus may travel up to 1600 km inside the digestive tract of migrating individuals. Our results suggest that avian vectors may be more important for the dispersal of rare higher plants (especially those with a hard seed-coat) than hitherto considered. Moreover, they suggest that rarity does not necessarily indicate limited dispersal ability, and may instead be explained by specific habitat requirements.

Opis:
The strictly protected Hacquetia epipactis, which natural range has its north-eastern limit in the area of the Cieszyńskie Foothills, is one of the most interesting rarities of Polish flora. For one and a half centuries H. epipactis was popular with scientists resulting in a relatively high number of papers addressing this plant. Usually, however, the characteristics of sites where H. epipactis occurs have been overlooked by the researchers. The aim of this work was to fill this gap, at least partly, by determining plant associations that are preferred by this species. Based on previous phytosociological records and by implementing numerical classification methods, it was found that the Hacquetio-Fraxinetum excelsioris Marinček 1990, which is divided into two subassociations (typicum and allietosum with other variants), is the main association in which this plant species occurs. In isolated sites, mostly outside the Cieszyńskie Foothills, it also appears in fragments of Galio sylvatici-Carpinetum betuli Oberd. 1957 and Tilio cordatae-Carpinetum betuli Tracz. 1962 associations.

Opis:
Knowledge of the flowering phase and plant pollination ecology is very important for understanding the life history of long-lived perennials. In the case of rare species, the information may have implications for conservation practices. Our studies on flower morphology and blooming biology of the vulnerable plant Senecio macrophyllus M. BIEB. were conducted in situ (flowering, activity of insect visitors) in the largest population in SE Poland and in laboratory (light and scanning electron microscopy). The disc florets open diurnally with most intensive anthesis in the early afternoon and attract insect visitors with nectar and pollen. In highly protandrous disc florets, pollen viability decreases in time, whereas stigma receptivity increases. The upper part of the pistil forms a brush-like pollen presenter, covered with unicellular trichomes with chromoplasts. Pollen presentation lasts 4–11 hours per floret, and 8 days in a single head, the main function of which is to extend the availability of male gamets for reproduction. The number of florets per head, the head size, and the number of pollen grains produced per anther, and the pollen grain viability differed significantly between microsites. The finding indicates that, apart from the biotic factors, abiotic conditions may considerably influence generative reproduction of the species. In the study area, the principal visitors of S. macrophyllus flowers were Hymenoptera, with predominance of Apis mellifera (53.4% of visits). The remarkable share of butterflies (13.9%) recognized as the long-distance moving insects may improve the genetic variability of individuals within a fragmented population. A more detailed study is necessary to explain the role of insect visitors in effective pollination and in gene transfer between patches. The assessment of optimal conditions for the generative reproduction is fundamental for the in situ conservation of this rare species.

Opis:
European yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare species, but is the focus of great interest because of the species recovery attempts and its use in medicine. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions for the development of the young generation of this species. Four-year old yew seedlings were grown under artificial light reduction: 2, 8, and 30%, as well as in full light. The seedlings were then planted in natural conditions in fenced and unfenced areas. The results of six years field studies indicated that the greatest impact on survival was shown by the light conditions from the period before planting under the canopy of trees. Seedlings from the 2 and 8% of light showed the greatest mortality. The reason was the sudden change in light conditions, because at the time of planting (early spring), there was no reduction of light under deciduous trees. Almost all of the unfenced yew seedlings were grazed by deer, but yew survival in the unfenced group was surprisingly high despite the permanent grazing. This was explained by the high resistance of yew to cutting and the protection of seedlings by a dense layer of Rubus. The results indicated that yew trees require protection against animals for normal development, even if animals have not previously had contact with Taxus and that yew seedlings are very sensitive to sudden changes in light. Both conclusions can be applied in the development of natural and artificial regeneration of European yew and other endangered plants.

Opis:
Habitat studies were conducted on three rare plant communities dominated by Nuphar pumila, Nymphaea candida and Hydrilla verticillata in lakes of north-eastern Poland. The comparison of habitat properties of these three types of phytocoenoses with those of Nuphar lutea common in the area under study was also performed. It was demonstrated that the plant communities studied were ecologically distinct. The habitats of the phytocoenoses of N. pumila differed most significantly from those of the other phytocoenoses. They often inhabited softer waters poor in Mg2+, dissolved SiO2, but rich in total Fe, PO43−, NO3−, and were associated with acidic substrates containing lower levels of Ca2+ and Na+, but greater amounts of total Fe and NO3−. The differences in the habitats of H. verticillata and N. candida phytocoenoses were most pronounced in the case of four properties of water: Na+, K+, Cl−, and Mg+. Their values were lower in waters of the H. verticillata phytocoenoses. The habitats of all the three types of rare phytocoenoses differed considerably from those of N. lutea. The most significant differences were found between the N. lutea and N. pumila phytocoenoses and the smallest differences were between the patches of N. lutea and N. candida. The properties of water were more important in differentiating the habitats of the phytocoenoses studied than the substrate properties. Due to alkalization and increase in water hardness in the lakes studied the stands of N. pumila are among the most threatened. The patches of N. candida and H. verticillata, which occur in waters with a wider range of hardness and tolerating a slight increase in trophy, can still continue to persist in the lakes for a long time.

Opis:
The paper presents an assessment of the natural values of grassland communities situated in the region of the Middle Sudetes in meso-regions of the Sowie, Kamienne and Wałbrzyskie Mountains. The study was carried out in the years 2009-2010 on utilised meadows and pastures. Two hundred and thirty two phytosociological relevés were made with the Braun-Blanquet method to estimate phytosociological affiliation of grassland communities. Moreover, species richness and the index of floristic diversity were calculated. Protected species were recorded and their risk categories were estimated. The studies showed that grassland communities belonged to the class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea. Five phytosociological units in the rank of association or community with the dominating species were distinguished within this class: Arrhenatheretum elatioris, the community Poa pratensis-Festuca rubra, the community with Agrostis capillaris, the association Lolio-Cynosuretum and the community with Alopecurus pratensis. The distinguished grassland communities were characterised by relatively high species richness ranging from 57 species in the community with Alopecurus pratensis to 103 species in the community with Agrostis capillaris and by mean diversity indices H' ranging from 2.6 to 3.1. In part of analysed grasslands there were 10 strictly or partly protected species. Six of them: Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soó, Gymnadenia conopsea (L.) subsp. conopsea R. Br., Trollius europaeus L. s. str. Dactylorhiza majalis (Rchb.) P. F. Hunt & Summerh., Colchicum autumnale L. and Platanthera bifolia (L.) Rich belonged to endangered or rare species in Lower Silesia. The presence of protected and rare species in grasslands increases their natural value. Most valuable phytocoenoses classified as the association Arrhenatheretum elatioris and the community Poa pratensis- Festuca rubra are identifiers of valuable habitats protected within the Natura 2000 system. Obtained results indicate that the studied grassland communities are characterised by a high natural value.
W górskim regionie polskich Sudetów łąki i pastwiska pełnią ważną rolę w strukturze użytkowania ziemi, zajmując ponad 50% powierzchni użytków rolnych. Celem pracy jest ocena wartości przyrodniczej wybranych zbiorowisk łąkowo-pastwiskowych w regionie Sudetów Środkowych, w mezoregionach: Gór Sowich, Gór Kamiennych i Gór Wałbrzyskich. W Górach Sowich badaniami objęto użytki zielone, położone w okolicy miejscowości Glinno, Jugowice i Walim, w Górach Kamiennych - w miejscowości Sokołowsko, a w Górach Wałbrzyskich - Lubiechów.

Opis:
The study objects were Aldrovanda vesiculosa L., an endangered species and fifty five water sites in Poland. The aim of the present work was to test the Self-Organizing Feature Map in order to examine and predict water properties and type of trophicity for restoration of the rare plant. Descriptive statistical parameters have been calculated, analysis of variance and cluster analysis were carried out and SOFM model has been constructed for analysed sites. The results of SOFM model and cluster analysis were compared. The study revealed that the ordination of individuals and groups of neurons in topological map of sites are similar in relation to dendrogram of cluster analysis, but not identical. The constructed SOFM model is related with significantly different contents of chemical water properties and type of trophicity. It appeared that sites with A. vesiculosa are predominantly distrophic and eutrophic waters shifted to distrophicity. The elevated model showed the sites with chemical properties favourable for restoration the species. Determined was the range of ecological tolerance of the species in relation to habitat conditions as stenotopic or relatively stenotopic in respect of the earlier accepted eutrophic status. The SOFM appeared to be a useful technique for ordination of ecological data and provides a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem properties constituting a validation of the SOFM method in this type of studies.
