Opis:
Pr-TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by using a sol-gel method. As-prepared samples were characterized by BET measurements, X-ray powder diffraction analysis (XRD) and UV-Vis spectra. Visible and ultraviolet light photocatalytic activity of the sample was studied by photodegradation of phenol, while considering the influence of the dopant concentration. TiO2 doped with 0.25 mol% of praseodymium showed the highest photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Pr-TiO2 had anatase structure. The surface area was higher for powders with higher content of rare earth metal ion, and ranged from 121 to 150 m2/g. Red shifts of absorption edge toward the visible region were observed for the doped samples compared to pure TiO2.

Opis:
Photocatalysts based on TiO2 co-doped with rare earth metal (RE) and gold nanoparticles have been prepared using a sol-gel method and followed by gold reduction. Specific surface areas of the modified photocatalysts were calculated by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET). Diffuse reflectance spectra of the obtained photocatalysts were recorded with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer (DRS UV-Vis). The influence of the type of rare earth metal on photoactivity of Au-RE-TiO2 nanocomposites in model reaction manifested by toluene photodegradation in a gas phase was investigated. The obtained results showed that photodegradation of toluene in the gas phase is possible over Au-RE-TiO2 irradiated by UV or Vis light. The Au-RE-TiO2 photocatalysts relative to undoped TiO2, did not caused an increase of toluene degradation in the air under visible light. The samples doped with Er3+ or Pr3+ presented the highest activity in solar light among of Au-RE-TiO2. It was observed that both metal dopants affected the surface area of TiO2. The Au-RE-TiO2 photocatalysts relative to undoped TiO2 exhibited the absorption properties under Vis light.

Opis:
Ferromagnetic compounds ErFe11TiHx (x = 0, 1) have been investigated by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy in the temperature range 20–300 K. Mössbauer spectra were analyzed in terms of a model which takes into account the local environment of Fe atoms on three crystallographic sites (8f, 8j and 8i) and an influence of the random distribution of titanium on the 8i site. The 14 sextets with different intensities have been considered. The temperature dependencies of hyperfine interaction parameters and subspectra contributions were derived from experimental spectra. The hyperfine fields and the isomer shift increasing upon hydrogenation are discussed in terms of the hydrogen-induced Wigner-Seitz unit cell expansion and the s-electrons transfer from Fe atoms to the adjacent hydrogen atoms.

Opis:
Liquid metal extraction (LME) process results in 100% neodymium (Nd) extraction but the highest extraction efficiency reportedfor Dysprosium (Dy) so far is 74%. Oxidation of Dy is the major limiting factor for incomplete Dy extraction. In order to enhance the extraction efficiency and to further investigate the limiting factors for incomplete extraction, experiments were carried out on six different particle sizes of under 200 μm, 200-300 μm, 300-700 μm, 700-1000 μm, 1000-2000 μm and over 2000 μm at 900°C with magnesium-to-magnet scrap ratio of 15:1 for 6, 24 and 48 hours, respectively. This research identified Dy2 Fe17 in addition toDy2 O3 phase to be responsible for incomplete extraction. The relationship between Dy2 Fe17 and Dy2O3 phase was investigated, and the overall extraction efficiency of Dy was enhanced to 97%.

Opis:
Liquid Metal Extraction process using molten Mg was carried out to obtain Nd-Mg alloys from Nd based permanent magnets at 900°C for 24 h. with a magnet to magnesium mass ratio of 1:10. Nd was successfully extracted from magnet into Mg resulting in ~4 wt.% Nd-Mg alloy. Nd was recovered from the obtained Nd-Mg alloys based on the difference in their vapor pressures using vacuum distillation. Vacuum distillation experiments were carried out at 800°C under vacuum of 2.67 Pa at various times for the recovery of high purity Nd. Nd having a purity of more than 99% was recovered at distillation time of 120 min and above. The phase transformations of the Nd-Mg alloy during the process, from Mg12Nd to α-Nd, were confirmed as per the phase diagram at different distillation times. Pure Nd was recovered as a result of two step recycling process; Liquid Metal Extraction followed by Vacuum Distillation.

Opis:
The nickel metal hydride batteries (Ni-MH) are used in many electronic equipment, like cell phones, computers, cameras as well as hybrid cars. Spent batteries can be a rich source of many metals, especially rare earth elements (REE), such as lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr), samarium (Sm), gadolinium (Gd). Ni-MH batteries also contain iron (Fe) as well as non-ferrous metals, i.e. nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), etc. Leaching of such waste with sulfuric acid solutions is one among many methods recovering of useful metals in hydrometallurgical processes. The main aim of this work was separation of metal ions from pregnant leach liquor (PLL) by solvent extraction using phosphorous compounds and ionic liquids (ILs). The initial pH of the aqueous solution was 0.1. Di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), bis (2,2,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272), and phosphoniumionic liquid - trihexyl (tetradecyl) phosphonium bis (2,4,4- trimethylpentyl) phosphinate (Cyphos IL 104) were used as the selective extractants. The initial concentration of the extractants in an organic phase was equal to 0.1 mol dm-3. The obtained results show that the highest extraction efficiency was obtained for Fe(III) and Zn(II) in extraction experiments with 0.1 M D2EHPA at pH of 0.1. Ni(II), Co(II) and REE remained in the aqueous solutions. In the next stage, REE were extracted with the mixture of 0.1 M Cyanex 272 and 0.1 M Cyphos IL 104 at pH equal to 3.8. Finally, Ni(II) and Co(II) ions were efficiently removed from the aqueous phase using 0.1 M solution of Cyphos IL 104 at pH around 5.4.

Opis:
Pierwiastki ziem rzadkich (REE) są niezwykle istotnym, choć rzadko występującym zasobem mineralnym odgrywającym ważną rolę w gospodarkach krajów wysoko rozwiniętych. Zakłócenia na międzynarodowym rynku surowcowym metali ziem rzadkich związane z monopolem Chin w zakresie ich produkcji i podaży zmuszają państwa wysoko rozwinięte do podejmowania intensywnych działań dla znalezienia nowych źródeł tych pierwiastków (wśród nich odpadów poprzeróbczych). W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań składu mineralnego odpadów powstających na wyspie Bangka w trakcie wzbogacania koncentratu kasyterytowego. Badane próbki odpadów zawierają monacyt w ilości do 21,23 %w oraz do 17,55 %w ksenotymu (próbka z Sungkap, Bangka), ponadto występują w nich cyrkon, ilmenit, anataz, rutyl, pseudorutyl i kasyteryt. Poza pierwiastkami REE – zidentyfikowano niob i tantal w żużlu powstającym podczas wytopu cyny.
REE metals are a vital yet scarce resource which play a particularly significant role in developed countries and their technologically advanced economies. Disturbances in the international mineral commodities market for REE’s caused by the Chinese supply monopoly force industrialized countries to launch intensive programs to discover new sources of these elements (even considering post-processing tailings). This paper discusses the mineral composition of tailings obtained in cassiterite extraction on Bangka Island. The analyzed tailing samples contain up to 21.23%w monazite, up to 17.55%w xenotime (Sungkap, Bangka), as well as zircon, ilmenite, anatase, rutile, pseurorutile, and cassiterite. Aside fromREE’s, niobiumand tantalum were identified in slag formed during tin smelting. The authors estimate that annually a minimum of 10,000 tons of minerals containing REE’s (both LREE’s-monazite and HREE’s-xenotime) can be further processed.

Opis:
This study was focused on recycling process newly proposed to recover electrodic powder enriched in nickel (Ni) and rare earth elements (La and Ce) from spent nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH). In addition, this new process was designed to prevent explosion of batteries during thermal treatment under inert atmosphere. Spent nickel metal hydride batteries were heated over range of 300°C to 600°C for 2 hours and each component was completely separated inside reactor after experiment. Electrodic powder was successfully recovered from bulk components containing several pieces of metals through sieving operation. The electrodic powder obtained was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and image of the powder was taken by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was finally found that nickel and rare earth elements were mainly recovered to about 45 wt.% and 12 wt.% in electrodic powder, respectively.

Opis:
The evaluation of the world's first MOSFETs with epitaxially-grown rare-earth high-k gate dielectrics is the main issue of this work. Electrical device characterization has been performed on MOSFETs with high-k gate oxides as well as their reference counterparts with silicon dioxide gate dielectric. In addition, by means of technology simulation with TSUPREM4, models of these devices are established. Current-voltage characteristics and parameter extraction on the simulated structures is conducted with the device simulator MEDICI. Measured and simulated device characteristics are presented and the impact of interface state and fixed charge densities is discussed. Device parameters of high-k devices fabricated with standard poly-silicon gate and replacement metal gate process are compared.
