Opis:
In the Canary Islands, groundwater is the main source of drinking water. Groundwater mines have been the system used by the engineers of the archipelago to collect water from the ground. The Canary Islands are volcanic with soils characterized by being rich in uranium, the disintegration of which gives rise to radon gas. In this study, radon gas levels in the mines on two islands of the archipelago have been measured to study exposure to this gas in the galleries. Results show values much higher than the European regulatory limit concentrations.

Opis:
The new radiation protection law in Germany, which came into effect 2018, puts greater emphasis on the protection against naturally occurring radiation, especially radon as a known health hazard. The law requires the delineation of radon priority areas, where prevention and remediation of high indoor radon concentrations should be taken with priority. In Germany, radiation protection is the administrative responsibility of the federal states. The state of Hesse has early on decided to fully survey the state for radon priority areas. To identify radon priority areas, the geogenic radon potential has to be determined. To achieve that radon, soil-gas measurements combined with soil permeability are a necessity. The University of Applied Sciences (THM) in Giessen is responsible for the radon soil-gas measurement campaign in Hessen. To achieve a statistically sound survey of the state of Hessen with an achievable amount of different measurement locations, and in the given time-frame, a geology-based concept has been designed. Taking into account the known geological information about geological structures in combination with the administrative counties, a survey strategy has been established. Prior known information regarding soil thickness, moisture, digability, and other technical limitations are used to determine the exact measuring locations. At every location, the radon activity in soil gas is measured. The soil permeability is determined for every measurement as well. Three measurements are performed at each location. Having completed the first set of measurements, the design criteria of the campaign and the practical experiences will be presented.

Opis:
At Cazzaso (Friuli) in northeast Italy, radon (222Rn) activity concentration in soil gas in a borehole at a depth of 80 cm has been monitored continuously (at a frequency of once an hour) since May 2004, using a Barasol probe (Algade, France). In addition, environmental parameters (air and soil temperature, barometric pressure) have been recorded. The results have been evaluated and the relationship between radon levels and seismic activity is discussed. Correlation between radon concentration and barometric pressure has been observed. Preliminary results have shown a distinct radon anomaly prior to some earthquakes.

China
Opis:
Radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) from soil gas are very significant factors that can affect the indoor radon level in the first floor or in the basement. China is one of the countries with the highest thorium content in the world. Therefore, it is very significant to study 222Rn/220Rn concentration in the soil in Shenzhen City (SC). A 222Rn/220Rn survey was performed using a portable radon monitor (model RAD7) at 69 sites, covered a total area of 1800 km2 in 2013 to get the original data for radon risk estimation in SC. The average values of 222Rn and 220Rn concentration of soil gas of the total 69 locations are 86 ± 72 kBq•m–3 and 118 ± 85 kBq•m–3, respectively. 222Rn/220Rn concentrations are related to geological lithology. 222Rn concentrations vary from 40 to 370 kBq•m–3 and from 15 to 118 kBq•m–3 in weathered granite products and sediments, respectively, while 220Rn concentrations are from 103 to 435 kBq•m–3 and 2.2 to 96 kBq•m–3. The higher 220Rn values were mainly observed at the sites covered by the weathered granite products. Comparing with the areas of high 222Rn concentration, the areas of high 220Rn values are larger. The distribution of 222Rn concentration in the vertical direction displays an exponential distribution mode, but there is no rule of 220Rn concentration. The investigation suggests that people should pay attention to 220Rn contribution in the radon mapping of SC, as well as in the indoor radon survey.

Opis:
The detailed research of a gas mixture released from the thermal water, which is extracted from borehole KT-1 at Karpniki, showed the predominance of nitrogen (98.08% by volume) with subordinate Ar (1.52%) and He (0.32%) and trace amounts of CO2 (0.07%) and CH4 (0.01%). The 222Rn radionuclide is also dissolved in this water, showing an activity concentration of 245 Bq/dm3 at the outflow and 256 Bq/dm3 in the aquifer. A small value of the gas exponent (0.014), and also a value of the δ coefficient close to 1 (0.93) were calculated based on the dissolved Ar and N2 content in the water examined, as well as on concentrations of argon and nitrogen in water, assuming that atmospheric air is present above the water surface with a contemporary composition and under normal pressure. The data obtained indicate that these gases and additionally CO2 and CH4 are of atmospheric origin. These gases were either dissolved in rainwater, which infiltrated deep into the Karkonosze granite massif, orformed within the organic layer covering this exposed intrusion. This is evidenced by concentrations of these gases that can be comparable to their atmospheric equivalents. Helium is a radiogenic gas formed as a result of nuclear transformation of isotopes assigned to natural radioactive series. The radiogenic and also radioactive gas is represented by the 222Rn radioisotope which is released from reservoir rocks, in an amount of 5% of the atom poolforming in the reservoir rock, into thermal water that subsequently reaches borehole KT-1 from a distance of 34 m at most. The thermal paleoinfiltration water has been heated up as a result of the conduction, and the source of heat is the temperature of the rocks resulting from an average geothermal gradient of 2.96°C per 100 m. The results of the authors’research indicate that there are no traces of inflow of hotfluids (especially water) from the deeper layers of the crust or from the mantle. If the examined thermal water is considered as paleoinfiltration water, its static resources may be limited, non-renewable.

The time series of radon (222Rn) concentration in soil gas at a fault, together with the environmental parameters, have been analysed applying two machine learning techniques: (i) decision trees and (ii) neural networks, with the aim at identifying radon anomalies caused by seismic events and not simply ascribed to the effect of the environmental parameters. By applying neural networks, 10 radon anomalies were observed for 12 earthquakes, while with decision trees, the anomaly was found for every earthquake, but, undesirably, some anomalies appeared also during periods without earthquakes.

Opis:
W latach osiemdziesiątych i dziewięćdziesiątych ubiegłego stulecia podjęto próby wykorzystania wybranych metod radiometrycznych do wspomagania prognozy wystąpienia wyrzutów skał i gazów w wałbrzyskich kopalniach węgla kamiennego (Lebecka i inni 1988, 1990, 1991). Analiza wyników prowadzonych dotychczas badań, skłania do podjęcia obserwacji zmian stężeń radonu w górnośląskich kopalniach węglowych zagrożonych wyrzutami. W Głównym Instytucie Górnictwa znajduje się nowa, doskonalsza aparatura, umożliwiająca ciągłe pomiary radonu. Możliwe, że uda się opracować "radonowy wskaźnik wyrzutowości", wspomagający inne metody przewidywania wystąpienia groźnych zjawisk geodynamicznych.
In 80's and 90's of twentieth century research activity toward an application of radiometric methods for supporting of outbursts' prediction in Lower Silesian mines has been undertaken. It was stimulated by an analogy to application of radon changes in water and soil gas for earthquakes, therefore a hypothesis was created, that similar phenomena may occur in coal seams before and during outbursts of gas and coal. In the Laboratory of Radiometry of the Central Mining Institute a technique of radon measurements in boreholes has been developed and applied for his purpose. An analysis of results showed that changes of radon concentration in the strata were correlated with the level of an outburst's hazard. Prior to the outburst a rapid decrease of radon concentration was often observed, while radon level grew quickly after the release of gas and coal. The best correlation between radon changes and outbursts' occurrence obtained when radon changes were shown as a function of the heading advance. Results of these investigations were very promising, therefore investigations of possible connections of radon changes and tremors have been started in coal and copper mines in Poland. In this case results and correlation weren't very clear and significant. In the meantime, Lower Silesian collieries have been abandoned and no further investigations were possible. Due to increase of outburst hazard in some of Upper Silesian coal mines is the inspiration for further investigations in these collieries. The Central Mining Institute has got a modern instrumentation for continuous measurements of radon concentration in the strata. Therefore we hope that it would be possible to develop a "radon outburst's indicator" to support other methods of prediction of very dangerous geodynamic phenomena.
