Opis:
In this study, the heavy metal and radioactive properties of Iznik Lake were investigated. Concentration values of the first (Ag, Bi, Mo, Sn, Se, Zn, As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Pt and Sb) and second (Na, Mg, K, Ca, P, S, Fe, Al and Mn) group of elements in borehole 1 (BH-1) drilling did not show much variation from the top to the bottom of the drilling. Concentration values of the fi rst group of elements in borehole 2 (BH-2) drill samples decreased at higher levels of drilling. In addition, natural and anthropogenic radionuclides were measured by gamma spectrometry, and the results of environmental natural radioactivity of Iznik Lake and its surroundings were determined. In the measurement results, Ra-226 was found to be below the world average value at all locations. It is assumed that the determination of K-40 values above the average values was due to agricultural activities carried out intensively in the study area. Th-232 values were found to be below the world average value in drilling samples; Cs-137 values were below the background level in all samples. According to these results, the study area does not contain any unnatural radioactivity.

The artificially produced isotopes of polonium are valuable tracers for radiochemical procedures for the determination of natural 210Po. In this work, the isotopes of polonium (206Po to 208Po) were produced by activation of metallic bismuth targets with 40 MeV protons. The thick target yield of 206Po was 16 MBq/ěAh. Polonium was separated from bismuth by a thermochromatographic method under reduced pressure in static conditions. The bismuth target can be considered as the multiple-use material.

Many applications of probiotics have been described to date. In this paper, it is hypothesized that probiotic microorganisms can also be used to decrease the xenobiotics intake in humans. The use of probiotic bacteriae (e.g. strains of Lactobacillus sp. and Bifidobacterium sp.) and yeasts (Saccharomyces sp.) gives the opportunity for detoxification of various elements and compounds, considered as contaminants, directly in the lumen of human intestine. Some of these microorganisms are known to accumulate cesium, strontium and heavy metals to a great extent and also bind mycotoxins. Certainly, during the up-coming years, their native or genetically modified strains will be a part of treatment protocols in detoxification therapy. The utilization of probiotics, in the both therapy and nutrition of people living in the countries suffering from high food contamination, could result in the reduction of annual xenobiotic dose to be incorporated in their organisms.

Five radioisotopes with half-lives ranging from 278.1 days to 7.17´105 years have been detected. The signals observed for 26Al, 22Na, 54Mn, 57Co and 60Co were interpreted in terms of the meteoroid depth profiles and terrestrial age after the fall. The pre-atmospheric radius of the chondrite was estimated to be >100 cm. Concentrations of short-lived nuclides limits the fall date before December 2011.

Opis:
In principle, there are two sources of environmental radionuclides, namely natural and man-made. In comparison with other environmental pollutants as, e.g., heavy metals, some scientific and technical disciplines profit by the natural radionuclides, using them for age determination of the samples, e.g., hydrology, geology and archaeology. Nevertheless, the environmental radionuclides represent mostly risk for a human health. Therefore, in this review, their sources are shortly described and original recent analyses of some bioaccumulation methods are presented, using either selected plant species or microorganisms, respectively. The different uptakes in all systems were measured to evaluate the possibility of application of the tested biological materials as markers of environmental contamination. It was also demonstrated that the detection methods developed for analyses of bioaccumulation of environmental radionuclides could be applied in radiotracer methodology for a study of bioaccumulation of heavy metals. While gamma spectrometry for soil samples and liquid scintillation spectrometry for water samples were used, autoradiography was applied to analyze the distribution of radionuclides during and/or after bioaccumulation.

Jamske Pleso lake is one of almost 200 lakes located in the Tatra Mountains. This post glacial water reservoir is set on a strictly protected area. In this work, sediment samples taken from Jamske Pleso Lake were analysed for radioactivity of natural 226Ra, 210Po, 210Pb and artificial 137Cs. The sediment core was taken by use of Limnos corer. After preparation of the physical sample, gamma measurements were executed in hermetically closed vessels. A preliminary study showed that concentration of natural radionuclides is in typical values for lakes located in this area. An elevated concentration of 226Ra (mean 57 ± 29 Bq ∙ kg–1) is an effect of uranium rich bedrock of the lake. Radioactivity of 137Cs is close to that reported in other Tatras lakes. Using 137Cs as an indicator allowed a preliminary estimate of the depth of the sediments deposited in 1960s.
Jamski Staw (słow. Jamské Pleso) to jeden spośród niemal 200 tatrzańskich stawów. XX wieku.

This paper presents vertical distribution of 137Cs, 226Ra and 239,240Pu in bottom sediments collected from the Southern Baltic Sea in the years 1998-2000. In the southern part of Baltic Sea the highest concentrations of 137Cs and 239,240Pu were observed at the Gulf of Gdansk. Deposition of 137Cs ranged from 1990š402 Bq m-2 in the Bornholm Basin to 3260š820 Bq m-2 in the Gulf of Gdansk. Depositions of 239,240Pu in the Bornholm Basin were 28.1-30.4 Bq m-2 and in Gulf of Gdansk 162-174 Bq m-2. The concentration peaks of long-lived radionuclides, owing to the sedimentation processes, show the maximum fallout period in different sediment layers. The observed differences in distribution of radiocaesium and plutonium along the profile confirm two main sources of contamination - Chernobyl fallout for 137Cs and global fallout in case of 239,240Pu. In chosen core samples from the Gdansk Basin vertical distribution of 210Pb concentrations were determined. Evaluated sedimentation rates based on decrease of unsupported 210Pb ranged in the Gdansk Basin from 1.9 to 2.3 mm year-1. Calculations based on 239,240Pu peaks show sedimentation rate, in the range from 1.6-2.2 mm year-1 for P110 region.

The aim of this paper is to present a methodological introduction into cosmogenic radionuclides dating, summarizing the main research objectives, and an overview of the state of studies in Poland. Cosmogenic nuclides 3He, 10Be, 14C, 21Ne, 26Al and 36Cl are among the most common ones, being widely applied to analyses of geomorphological features and reconstructions of geological processes. Thereby they allow geochronological systematization of the Late Cenozoic, being of primary importance if traditional research methods fail. This approach has broad analytical potential for, i.e., dating of exposure history of different morphological features, estimation of denudation and erosion rates, as well as detailed reconstruction of glacial chronology.

The paper presents the results of determination of natural [polonium (210Po), uranium (234U, 235U, 238U)] and artificial radionuclides [iron (55Fe), nickel (63Ni), and plutonium (238Pu, 239+240Pu, 241Pu)] in Poland and the southern Baltic Sea ecosystem as well as the recognition of their accumulation process in the trophic chain. All presented results is a summary of long lasting studies realized by the present authors. Results of this study indicated that the principal sources of 55Fe and 63Ni in the Baltic Sea environment is the release from Swedish nuclear power plants. Investigation on the polonium 210Po and plutonium 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Pu concentration in Baltic and land biota revealed that these radionuclides are strongly accumulated by some species. Moreover, it was found that fish, mushrooms, cigarettes constitutes important sources of 210Po for people. The Baltic Sea algae, benthic animals and fish concentrate uranium only to a small degree. In Baltic sediments, the concentration of uranium increases with core depth and it is connected with the diffusion of 234U, 235U and 238U from sediments. The values of 234U/238U activity ratio in the sediments indicated that the reduction process of U(VI) to U(IV) and the removing of autogenic uranium from seawater to sediments in the Gdańsk Deep constitutes a small part only.

Opis:
The Sołtmany hammer meteorite is classified as an ordinary chondrite type L6, W0, S2. At present it is the most thoroughly and comprehensively examined Polish meteorite. A comprehensive petrological, mineralogical and geochemical analysis alongside the investigation of its physical and particularly thermophysical properties, and, most of all, analyses of cosmogenic radionuclides and noble gases isotopes content, as well as the use of a troilite thermometer has made it possible to draw interesting conclusions concerning the genesis and evolution of the parent body and the history of the parent meteoroid and, finally, the Sołtmany meteorite. The present report attempts at summing up the results of studies conducted at several European research centres in the last four years. The age of the the Sołtmany chondrite parent rock has been defined at 4.137 billion years. It was formed at a temperature of up to 440–450 K (about 170°C), probably at a depth of up to 3 to 7 km under the surface of the parent body, i.e. at a pressure of the order of 1–2.4 kbar. Such a low temperature during the accretion, diagenesis and metamorphism of the parent body may point to its complicated development, which may be in part due to collisions of partially melted planetesimals. Like with other type L ordinary chondrites, one can infer that the parent body could have been destroyed about 467 million years ago, at the time of a catastrophic collision which led to the formation of Gefion family of planetoids. Perhaps one of the bodies in this family was involved in another collision about 29.2 million years ago, which resulted in ejecting the parent meteoroid of the Sołtmany chondrite onto the Earth collision trajectory. Before entering the Earth’s atmosphere, this meteoroid had the mass of about 36 kg and the diameter of ca 13.5 cm. During its flight through the atmosphere, it rotated and somersaulted, which resulted in the formation of an uniform thin (0.5–0.7 mm) fusion crust, whose temperature reached 1000°C. In the last phase, the Sołtmany meteorite fell almost vertically and its mass was a mere 3% of the mass of the parent meteoroid – 1.066 kg. It hit the roof and then the concrete stairs of a farm building, which caused it to break into two bigger and many small pieces. It was found a few minutes after the fall, which occurred at 6:03 a.m. (CEST, UTC+2:00) on 30 April 2011, by Wydmińskie Lake in northern Poland (54°00,53’N, 22°00,30’E). The Sołtmany chondrite is one of just 14 meteorites in which the activity concentration of the cosmogenic 52Mn has been determined, and one of the few ordinary chondrites where the concentration of organic matter has been defined. As a result, it was found out that unlike in carbonaceous CI chondrites, the composition of organic particles is dominated by less complex compounds (CHO and CHOS) than CHNO and CHNOS compounds. This may indicate the decomposition of more complex organic compounds into particles with simple structures during magmatic and metamorphic processes related to formation of type L ordinary chondrites.
