Opis:
Background: Acne fulminans can leaveunsightly scars that can have a detrimental effect on a person’s ability to function in society, resulting in a deterioration in the overall quality of life of these patients. Scientific research shows that problems with self-esteemmay lower a person’s quality of life, making them reluctant to interact with other people. This, in turn, may lead to depression and, in extreme cases, to suicide. For people who suffer from acne fulminans, this is an extremely serious problem. This is compounded by the fact that even if they spend much of their life fighting acne, ultimately successfully, they still may be left with the visual effects of the disease, like scars. Aim of the study: The aim of the paper is to investigate how a series of six needle radiofrequency treatments will affect, and potentially shallow, the acne scars. Material and methods: The analysis was conducted on the basis of an interview, photographic documentation of the patient and skin diagnosis using the NatiAnalyzer device. The case report was based on the medical history, photographic documentation and skin diagnosis (using the Nati Skin Analyzer), of a 28-year-old female patient who had suffered from acne fulminans during her adolescence. The effectiveness of the needle radiofrequency treatment was then analyzed. Case report: A 28-year-old female patient who hadstruggled with skin eruptions caused by acne fulminans since the age of 15 underwent an examination. The lesions were located on her entire face which resulted in deep scars. The patient used a series of six needle radiofrequency treatments along with ampoules containing active ingredients. Treatments were performed once a month. Conclusions: As evaluated using Goodman and Baron’s scar scale, the scars appear to have shallowed. Additionally, the patient’s self-esteem increased.

bipolar radiofrequency therapy
Opis:
Disturbance of nasal airflow occurs in about 30% of human population. Turbinate hypertrophy is frequently the base of many nasal obturative diseases. The aim of this study was to determine short- term and long term effects of the radiofrequency therapy (RFT) for patients with turbinate hypertrophy. Forty- one patients with inferior turbinate hypertrophy (19 females and 22 males) were enrolled in this study prospectively. The examination included: rhinoscopy, subiective visual analogue scale (VAS) score, in which a patient described his symptoms in points from 0, (always very good nasal airflow) to 10 points (always total obstruction) and anterior rhinomanometry. The clinical assessment was before radiofrequency-turbinectomy and within the days 7 to 25 afther this therapy (follow-up 1) and 12 months later (follow-up 2). RFT was performed in local anesthesia (1% Lidocain) by means of CELON. Rhinoscopy before RFT revealed turbinate hypertrophy, which was decreased in the follow-up examination. Subjective improvement of nasal airflow was felt by 39 patients (95%) at follow–up 1. At follow–up 2 fifteen patients (37%) reported a decreased nasal airflow when compared with the follow-up 1. Rhinomanometric results were better at follow-up 1 for the left side (p = 0,0003), the right side (p = 0,0002) and both sides altogether (p = 0,0001). The improvement continued at follow-up 2 for the left side (p = 0,0004), the right side (p = 0,001) and both sides (p = 0,001) when compared with rhinomanometry before RFT. There were not statistically significant differences between the rhinomanometric results at follow–up 1 and follow-up 2. Bipolar radiofrequency thermal ablation is an effective method for the therapy of turbinate hypertrophy.

Opis:
In this article a three-dimensional mathematical model of radiofrequency ablation during open-heart surgery is presented. It was developed to study temperature field distribution into myocardial tissue. This model uses an anatomically correct 3D model for the left atrium, obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) processing of a patient; takes into account thermoelectric characteristic differences depending on the area of electric current application; considers cooling by the air flow. An ex-vivo experiment on the pig’s heart was performed where the depth of myocardium tissue damage was measured for the model validation. It was shown that the deviation of the model data from the experiment is within the limits of instrumental measurement error. The developed model is proposed to be used for heart ablation procedures planning, or new equipment development.

Low back-pain is the most common pain syndrome. Radiofrequency facet denervation (RFD) is a minimally invasive method of treatment of chronic low back pain caused by facet joint syndrome. In this procedure electric current with frequency of radio waves are used to cause thermal injury to a small branch nerve that innervates painful facets. There are numerous studies confirming the effectiveness of this therapy. A good outcome of RFD can be sustained by appropriate and regular exercise. The aim of this article is to recommend such a program of exercises focused on strengthening the muscles and improving stabilization of the lumbar spine.

Opis:
Objective: Mobile phones generate microwave radiation which is absorbed by exposed tissue and converted into heat. It may cause detrimental health effects. The aim of the experiment was to check if exposure to EMF emitted by mobile phone influenced the tympanic temperature. Material and Methods: Human volunteer study was performed on ten healthy young men, aged 22.1±4.7 years, examined three times: 1. on a day with 2×60 min of no exposure (sham day), 2. on a day with continuous, 60 min exposure and 60 min of no exposure, 3. on a day with intermittent exposure (4×15 min “on” and 4×15 min “off”). Exposure was generated by mobile phone (frequency 900 MHz, SAR 1.23 W/kg). The study was double-blind, performed under controlled conditions (at 24°C and 70% humidity). The tympanic temperature (Tty) was monitored every 10 sec by a thermistor probe placed close to the aural canal membrane in the ear opposite the one in contact with mobile phone (contralateral position). Multivariate repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to calculate the results. Results: The mean Tty in the whole group during continuous exposure was significantly higher than during sham exposure (p = 0.0001). During intermittent exposure the temperature was lower than during sham day (difference was up to 0.11°C). Within an hour after continuous exposure, Tty was higher by 0.03°C and after intermittent exposure Tty was lower by 0.18°C in comparison with sham day. Two hours after exposure Tty was significantly lower (p = 0.0001) than after sham exposure (0.06°C and 0.26°C respectively). The trends in Tty during experiment differed significantly in relation to exposure conditions (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this analysis indicate that the physiological response to EMF exposure from mobile phone was mostly related to type of exposure (continuous or intermittent).

This paper established a radio-frequency electrode model and human head modelused in RF cosmetic instruments. The distribution of electric field strength, a specific absorption rate (SAR), and temperature distribution in the human brain at 1 MHz and 6 MHz were studied and the results compared with the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines. The results showed that under those two frequencies the maximum value of electric field strength in the human brain was 1.52 V/mand it was about 5.4% of the ICNIRP basic restrictions, the maximum SAR in human brain was about 2.21×10−3W/kg, which was far less than 2 W/kg of ICNIRP basic restrictions, the maximum temperature of the human brain was 37.6 located in the wounded skin, which was the same as the normal temperature 37. Since all the results were within the ICNIRP basic restrictions, the electromagnetic exposure generated by the RF cosmetic electrode will not pose a threat to the human health.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: The results of direct surgical release of the median nerve in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome are frequently far from being satisfactory. Aim of the presented study is to assess the early results of bipolar pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) neuromodulation of the median nerve (MN) for treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen adult patients with CTS (10 women and 5 men, mean age 58.5 years) were treated. The bipolar technique of neuromodulation was applied, with confirmation of the correct electrode position by neurophysiological examination. The study protocol included the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain assessment and tip pinch strength assessment performed before neuromodulation as well as 4 and 12 weeks after treatment. Moreover, the sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) was assessed before and 12 weeks after the intervention. RESULTS: A significant improvement in symptom severity (33.53 ± 8.25 at the baseline vs. 18.33 ± 11.06 and 25.67 ± 12.39 at 4 and 12 weeks) and functional status (21.0 ± 5.79 vs. 12.07 ± 7.20 and 17.73 ± 9.09) BCTQ subscores, as well as tip pinch strength (3.39 ± 1.68 vs. 5.86 ± 1.98 and 4.93 ± 2.22) were observed. A reduction in pain and improvement in SNCV were also found, but did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: Bipolar PRF neuromodulation of MN is a promising therapeutic tool for patients with CTS and could potentially be an alternative to direct surgical release of MN. A longer follow-up period is required to assess the longevity of clinical improvement after the treatment.
WSTĘP: Wyniki chirurgicznego odbarczenia nerwu pośrodkowego u części chorych z zespołem cieśni nadgarstka są niezadowalające. Celem pracy jest ocena wczesnych wyników leczenia zespołu cieśni nadgarstka (carpal tunnel syn-drome – CTS) za pomocą bipolarnej neuromodulacji nerwu pośrodkowego (median nerve – MN) z użyciem prądu o częstotliwości radiowej w trybie pulsacyjnym (pulsed radiofrequency – PRF). MATERIAŁ I METODY: Leczeniu poddano 15 dorosłych pacjentów z CTS (10 kobiet i 5 mężczyzn, średni wiek 58,5 roku).
