Opis:: Home broadband access is continuously demanding more bandwidth fueled by video streaming, entertainment and gaming applications. In 2010, a company INEA decided to roll-out new WiMAX-based services aimed to meet the needs of home users across theWielkopolska region of western Poland. It was decided to follow the 802.16e standard and the Time Division Duplexing (TDD) mode that oer the ability to adjust the downlink/uplink ratio and thus are well suited for data transmission. After an extensive testing period of equipment from various vendors, engineers at INEA have chosen the Motorola (currently Cambium Networks) PMP320 solution because it is compact and its components are space- and energy-ecient. The company choice was also influenced by its simple operation, management and installation, which ensured low costs of ownership. So far, this deployment has provided fast and aordable connectivity for Internet and telephony services to around 5,500 households across the 30,000 sq. km region. After 3 years of experience, INEA would like to share the lessons learned from this roll-out.

Opis:: One of the biggest projects aimed at integration of the infrastructure of the European Union is the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System on the railway network of the Member States. Its goal is to unify the railway traffic control system in European countries, increase safety as well as ensure the interoperability of rail transport. One of its main components is ERTMS/GSM-R subsystem. This article presents the structure of the GSM-R system as well as associated systems. Services offered by the system are discussed. The rules of planning radio networks including the propagation model are described. The final part of the paper contains an example of radio planning for GSM-R system for selected railway line covering computations as well as simulation tests. The simulation of the radio coverage was prepared with the usage of ICS Telecom software.

Opis:: We present a novel method of fast and reliable data gathering for the purpose of location services based on radio signal strength services such as WiFi location/ navigation. Our method combines the acquisition of location and mapping based on computer vision methods with WiFi signal strength stochastic data gathering. The output of the method is threefold: 3D metric space model, 2D floor plan map and metric map of stochastic radio signal strength. The binding of location data with radio data is done completely automatically, without any human intervention. The advantage of our solution lies also in a significant speed-up and density increase of Radio Map generation which opens new markets for WiFi navigation services. We have proved that presented solution produces a map allowing location in office space of accuracy 1.06 m.

Opis:: The reduction of sea ice area in the Arctic has increased the availability of the Russian Arctic seas for navigation by vessels of relatively low ice class. The signing of the Act on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) by the President of the Russian Federation has created the possibility for ships from countries other than Russia to use the NSR. However, the NSR is very poorly recognized in terms of navigation by countries other than Russia. The author of the paper analyzed the NSR navigation infrastructure components in terms of the reliability of the information provided by the main producers of nautical publications for initial voyage planning. For the purpose of this analysis an indicator of the quality of the navigation infrastructure was developed. The value of this indicator, obtained on the basis of the above analysis, is low. Navigators that collect information during the initial stage of voyage planning may be misled if they use nautical publications originating from only one global producer of charts and publications. If the navigators act in accordance with good seamanship and familiarize themselves with information from two or three global producers of nautical publications, they may be disoriented due to the receipt of divergent information. It seems that before the voyage begins and preferably before planning a trip, the master or owner of the vessel intending to carry out a voyage by the NSR should first use the most current local knowledge in the possession of the Northern Sea Route Administration. This is also where information can be found as to where to obtain the most current and reliable information for initial voyage planning.

The article highlights main directions of research in the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) field, carried out at the National Institute of Telecommunications (NIT) branch in Wrocław since its establishment. This work was often of trail-blazing kind, had wide range and important applications, including also standardization, development activities and international cooperation.

Opis:: An Internet application was developed to support the design process of the WLAN access network. The whole program was designed as a desktop application using the following languages: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The main task of the application facilitates the planning process of the WLAN access network, including the location of multiple base stations. There is an example of using the program in the WLAN network planning process. The main purpose of this application as the ability to carry out network planning using multiple base stations and provide radio coverage for the entire area served by Wireless Internet Service Provider, is obtained.
