Opis:
The essence of radical movements is always an idea, for which people are willing to die. In the context of political emancipation religion might be such an idea. The connection between religion and radical movements is usually based on dialectics with the official interpretation of dogmas. Revolutionists claim that the official dogmatic theology is a “heresy” and they offer the true confession of faith instead. This article analyses the way religion serves as the basis for revolutionary movements, how it is engaged in a specific interpretation of the world. The analysis is grounded on three examples: the Czech Hussites, a conspiracy led by Father Piotr Ściegienny as well as religion in the Zapatista Movement. The aim of this paper is to present the way in which religion becomes the basis for a radical worldview.

Opis:
The article tackles the issue of conversion of Slavic Russians to Islam. The phenomenon is not new; it dates back to the 19th century and was connected with the Caucasian war. Nowadays, converts to Islam are usually young people, mainly students. The reasons for their conversion are diverse; thus, this is not a monolithic group. It consists of certain specific types that can be distinguished on the basis of the reasons for their conversion to Islam. This article categorises the new Russian Muslims under study, which are believed to be composed of four separate groups: people who married a Muslim, those attracted by the mysticism of religion (looking for God), people who consciously accept Islam as a religion with a tangible historical, ethnographic and cultural heritage, and finally those who are attracted by radical Islamic movements.

Opis:
For over a decade, the explosion of various forms of urban activism has been observed: so- called urban social movements or the right to the city (RTTC) movements actively participate in the realm of non-institutional politics. This trend has been observed both world-wide and in Europe, particularly in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Poland is also a clear example of this tendency. The paper presented aims to achieve two goals. First of all, it is based on desk research and offers a broad literature overview, indicating the main directions and results in urban activism research in Poland of the last 10 years. Recalling and discussing the broadest possible body of literature, with particular emphasis on Polish-language references, should be useful for international readers and researchers. Secondly, the paper attempts to synthesize these current research results, including the authors own research results, identifying the complexity of the field of urban activism. As a result, it points to various entities using the RTTC slogan in their social struggles, consequently identifying two main types of RTTC activism: radical and middle-class (petite bourgeoisie?) movements.

Opis:
Uzbekistan, so as other Central Asian Republics, turned into turbulent times in the beginning of 1990’s. After collapsing USSR, 5 Republics gained its independence. The whole region was very well-known from its religiosity. However, besides the fact that Islamist movements and parties were banned on any political activity and had no right to act as an opposition within the system of Uzbekistan, they have emerged subsequently especiallly in this country. The modern history of Uzbekistan is full of radical Islamic political and social movements. From the very beginning of the Republic, Islam Karimov, its first and the only one till now president, rules though and solidly. He was the biggest opponent of any Islamic initiative which showed up and tried to damp it down immediately. The aim of this study is to explore all the Islamist parties and movements which have been raised in Uzbekistan between 1990 and 2012. Which of them were and still remaining crucial and have the impact on Uzbek political and social life. The Author is trying to investigate the reasons and circumstances that led Islamist movements to arise and effectively influence on Uzbekistan political arena.

Opis:
Since 1992, clandestine radical environmentalist cells, calling themselves the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), have carried out arson attacks in an effort to punish corporations for environmentally deleterious practices. I examine the radical environmental movement and find that its recent rise to prominence and notoriety is part and parcel of the larger development of the more general anti-globalization/anti-capitalist movement. Specifically, I examine how, despite its libertarian conservative origins, the ideology of Earth First! changed after an influx of new members with anti-state, anarchist sympathies. Finally, I assess the applicability of three major criticisms of “globalization from below” to the case of the ELF, namely: a) that its preoccupation with the transnational sphere and abandonment of electoral politics is misguided, b) that direct actions such as property destruction are counterproductive to the wider aims of the movement, and, c) that its strategies of contention are too episodic, and do very little to encourage practical, inclusive, local, and sustained action in the service of global justice
