    The paper presents the results of study of convective cloud development over land and sea. The study was based on data from the Gdańsk-Rębiechowo radar and upper air sounding from the Łeba aerological station. Radar data from the classical channel were analyzed for the atmosphere scanned at 6 elevation angles of the antenna beam. Vertical profiles of the atmosphere along selected paths presenting radiolocation reflectivity in the detected cloud structures were produced using the recorded radiolocation reflectivity. Conclusions concerning the cloud structure, the physical state of water in the clouds and the thermodynamic state of the atmosphere were formulated as the results of comprehensive analysis of the radar and upper air sounding data. The obtained values of selected parameters and indices were used to quantitatively describe selected physical processes and to formulate forecasts concerning weather phenomena that might pose threats to land, air and sea transport as well as for some industrial and agricultural branches. The developed method of radar and aerological data processing will be applied to further studies of convective clouds in other regions. It will also enable to assess the impact of environmental conditions on the development of convective processes.

    Opis:
    High temporal and spatial resolution of radar measurements enables to continuously observe dynamically evolving meteorological phenomena. Three-dimensional (3D) weather radar reflectivity data assimilated into the numerical weather prediction model has the potential to improve initial description of the atmospheric model state. The paper is concentrated on the development of radar reflectivity assimilation technique into COAMPS mesoscale model using an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) type assimilation schemes available in Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART) programming environment. Before weather radar data enter into the assimilation system, the measurement errors are eliminated through quality control procedures. At first artifacts associated with non-meteorological errors are removed using the algorithms based on analysis of reflectivity field pattern. Then procedures for correction of the reflectivity data are employed, especially due to radar beam blockage and attenuation in rain. Each of the correction algorithms is connected with generation of the data quality characteristic expressed quantitatively by so called quality index (QI). In order to avoid transformation of data uncertainty into assimilation scheme only the radar gates successfully verified by means of the quality algorithms were employed in the assimilation. The proposed methodology has been applied to simulate selected intense precipitation events in Poland in May and August 2010.

    Opis:
    metallic parts. Based on the assumption that only moving, metallic parts of a turbine cause echoes indelible by standard filtering used in radar signal preprocessing, a method of preliminary evaluation of such maximum potential clutters was developed. The method takes into account how great a part of a turbine is really illuminated by a radar beam and for this part calculates a RCS (Radar Cross Section) and its equivalent radar reflectivity. A very detailed description of the model is given in this article in order for it to be easy to implement in any calculation system. Discussion of the influence of the main simplifications assumed in this model, as well as a comparison of the theoretical results with example data in operational mode of radar work, are included in this article.

    W pracy przedstawiono wyniki pilotażowych badań stref zachmurzenia z opadem gradu na podstawie danych z radaru z podwójną polaryzacją fali elektromagnetycznej pracującego w Rzeszowie-Jasionce, który jest jednym z ośmiu radarów meteorologicznych tworzących nową sieć POLRAD zarządzaną przez Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej - PIB. Skanowanie atmosfery falą o podwójnej polaryzacji dostarcza znaczną ilość danych radarowych, które dokładnie opisują wykryte obiekty meteorologiczne, w tym rozmiary cząsteczek chmurowych i opadowych. Przeprowadzone badania umożliwiły jakościowy i ilościowy opis stref zachmurzenia z opadem atmosferycznym o zmiennej intensywności oraz ze zmiennym rozkładem przestrzennym i czasowym. Uzyskanie danych o strukturze strefy zachmurzenia wymaga stworzenia nowych niestandardowych zobrazowań przedstawiających horyzontalne i pionowe rozkłady odbiciowości radarowej wyznaczonej na podstawie pomiarów w kanale klasycznym radaru. Dane radarowe przetworzono z wykorzystaniem oprogramowania RAINBOW DART i RAPOK. Wygenerowano całkowicie nowe zbiory danych opadowych dla wybranego rejonu z zachowaniem zgodności miejsca oraz terminu obserwacji, w których uwzględniono natężenie opadu, stan fazowy oraz czynniki środowiskowe. Opracowane pionowe przekroje radioech wzdłuż zadanej trasy dostarczyły informacje o strukturze i aktywności badanej komórki burzowej oraz występującym rdzeniu opadowym. Natężenie opadu atmosferycznego wyznaczono z zależności Marshalla-Palmera, Jossa oraz Muchnika, w których użyto odbiciowości radarowej na wysokościach 1 km, 1,5 km i 2 km nad powierzchnią gruntu z uwzględnieniem poziomu zamarzania. W pracy przedstawiono kompleksową analizę sytuacji wystąpienia opadu gradu na podstawie danych synoptycznych oraz zobrazowań natężenia opadu i prawdopodobieństwa jego wystąpienia. Wykazano, że dostępne w sieci wymiany danych meteorologicznych standardowe zobrazowanie natężenia opadu generowane każdorazowo na podstawie zależności Marshalla–Palmera dla odbiciowości radarowej na wysokości 1 km nad powierzchnią gruntu może zawierać błędy, których zminimalizowanie wymaga dokonania zmian w algorytmach obliczeniowych. Na tym etapie badań w obliczeniach wykorzystano inne zależności, przy wyborze których uwzględniono rodzaj opadu. Natomiast dane o strukturze badanej komórki burzowej pozwoliły na obliczenia na podstawie wartości odbiciowości radarowej wyznaczonych na różnych poziomach w rdzeniu opadowym. Analizę otrzymanych radarowych danych opadowych prowadzono na podstawie zarówno danych synoptycznych, jak i klimatycznych dla badanego rejonu. W następnym etapie badań wykorzystane zostaną wyniki pomiarów terenowych prowadzonych w rejonach z rozbudowaną siecią bezpośrednich pomiarów opadów atmosferycznych. Wyniki tych badań pozwolą na rekomendowanie zależności empirycznych do wyznaczania natężenia opadu w zależności od rodzaju opadu, budowy chmury opadowej oraz warunków środowiskowych.
    The paper presents the results of a preliminary study of cloudiness area with hail precipitation based on data from a dual-polarisation electromagnetic wave radar operating in Rzeszów-Jasionka which is one of eight meteorological radars belonging to the POLRAD managed by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute. Atmospheric dual-polarisation wave scanning provides a significant radar data that accurately describes detected meteorological objects, including the sizes of cloud and precipitation particles. The conducted research enabled us a qualitative and quantitative description of cloudy zones with precipitation of variable intensity and variable spatial and temporal distribution. Obtaining data on the structure of the cloud cover zone requires the creation of new and non-standard imagery showing horizontal and vertical distributions of radar reflectivity determined on the basis of measurements in the classic radar channel. Radar data were processed using RAINBOW DART and RAPOK software. Completely new rainfall datasets were generated for the selected region with consistency of location and observation date, in which precipitation intensity, phase state, and environmental factors were taken into account. Developed vertical cross-sections of the atmosphere along the set route provided information on the structure and activity of the studied storm cell and the precipitation core present. Precipitation intensity was determined from the Marshall‒Palmer, Joss and Muchnik correlations, which used radar reflectivity at heights of 1 km, 1.5 km, and 2 km above the ground surface, taking into account the freezing level. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the hail situation based on synoptic data and images of hail intensity and hail probability. It was shown that, available in the meteorological data exchange network, the standard images of precipitation intensity generated in each case based on the Marshall-Palmer correlation for radar reflectivity at a height of 1 km above the ground surface may contain errors, which require changes in calculation algorithms to be minimised. At this stage of the research, other dependencies were used in the calculations, which took into account the type of precipitation. On the other hand, data on the structure of the studied storm cell allowed us calculations based on the values of radar reflectivity determined at different levels in the rain core. The analysis of the obtained radar precipitation data was carried out on the basis of both syn-optic and climatic data for the studied region. In the next stage of research, the results of field meas-urements carried out in regions with an extensive network of direct precipitation measurements will be used. The results of these studies will allow us to recommend empirical relationships for determining precipitation intensity depending on the type of precipitation, the structure of the precipitation cloud and environmental conditions.
