Opis:
The article presents some proposals that might contribute towards improving quality while results of statistical analyses are presented in Polish publications within history and related disciplines. According to the author nowadays there are no clear standards determining the rules of such presentations, which often leads to a limited comparability of results and makes it impossible to apply the techniques of data meta-analysis, and insome cases also leads to serious methodological errors. The proposals included in the text consists of the following postulates: 1) to inform the reader of the number of the populations and subpopulations investigated; 2) to make a greater use of statistical measures that describe the distribution of the analysed communities; 3) to standardise the convention of recording such measures; 4) to inform the reader about the size of the standard errors; 5) to apply the commonly accepted rules concerning data grouping; 6) to take into account the spatial dimension of the analysed phenomenon, which should be presented in the form of maps and plans; 7) to urge the authors of academic texts to make public their data sets.

Opis:
Ta polemika raczej zaciemnia niż rozjaśnia i dzieli zamiast łączyć.
This article compares and contrasts some aspects of qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The question is: how does a researcher select a research paradigm and corresponding methodology? Is this choice a consequence of the nature or essence of the social phenomena being investigated? The researcher’s thinking style is probably a key factor for the preferred choice of methods. The strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative research are a perennial and hot themes of debate, especially in psychology. Much of this debate has tended to obfuscate rather than clarify the problem, and to divide rather than unite researchers. Is this the inter-paradigm debate or is it a dispute between competing paradigms? Quantitative purists express assumptions that are consistent with positivist philosophy, whereas qualitative purists reject positivism. However, the major question remains: What is the goal of investigation? The final section of the paper advocates a “pragmatic approach” as a new guiding paradigm and as a basis for supporting work that combines qualitative and quantitative methods.

Some remarks on the place of quantitative research in Polish economic history. The state and prospects (Summary)The article is a polemic on the text by Piotr Guzowski and Radosław Poniat entitled: The place of quantitative research in modern Polish historiography, which appeared in 2013 in the 73 volume of Roczniki Dziejów Społecznych i Gospodarczych [The Yearbook of Social and Economic History]. The article refers to a number of hypotheses and opinions presented by scholars who offered a critical analysis of the state of Polish economic history, the methods it uses and the scholarly potential it has. The article aims to present dilemmas faced by scholars specializing in economic history – one which rests on two pillars: history and economy. The author posits that economic history (not only in Poland), in exploring new ways of development, continues to rely both on a traditional history, known for its adherence to idiographic methods (which does not rule out the selection and juxtaposition of different data), and on contemporary economics, concerned mainly with model-building. The author argues for adopting a methodologically open approach to economic history, discussing a number of significant, both western and Polish, publications on this issue. The article also contains a review of the use of quantitative methods in Polish economic history.

In this article, I will discuss the position of King, Keohane and Verba. Referring directly to the issues of sociology and political science, these authors set the main goal of their considerations to show how to design a research that brings accurate conclusions about social and political life. Many of their comments are applicable to research in other fields of science, including in psychology. Qualitative, and not only quantitative, methods can be very useful in researching the IT environment. Educational organizations can apply the conclusions from studies which connect the qualitative and quantitative methods to assist in the staff development to achieve organizational goals. Also -in process of proper recruitment of leaders in business management or to assist the stuff to raise the performing of professional tasks, even self-development of stuff members should also use the scientific research findings. Hence I consider both – quantitative but also qualitative methods – worth quoting and analyzing.

“That in the age of numbers, numbers only can be turned to for supporting one’s propositions” – once more on the Polish studies of economic history (Summary)The authors, in referring to the paper written by Rafał Matera and published in this issue, argue that good studies from the field of economic history should 1) offer analyses informed by a social and economic theory; 2) make use of comparative methods, including as an advisable option the quantification of a series of data; 3) create or rely on specialized databases. Through the analysis of a number of works, the authors show that present-day Polish economic historians often fail to meet the requirements outlined above, thus making Polish historiography lag increasingly behind the historiography of other countries.

Opis:
The article discusses the use of quantitative methods in studies on Polish history. The database with information on tables and schedules in annual volumes of selected specialist (general and socio-economic history) journals and other periodicals was the basis for the deliberations. A statistical analysis of the data obtained showed a gradual decline in the use of quantitative methods. From the 1970s, tables and graphs took up less and less space in the periodicals and statistical techniques were gradually simplified. With the exception of “Przeszłość Demograficzna Polski” (Poland’s Demographic Past) this process continues. In the authors’ opinion this increases the gap between Polish and global socio-economic historiography.

Opis:
The Bologna process has created new opportunities for bilateral agreements between universities. One of the results of such a contract could be a double degree certificate which consists of two independent diplomas that are offered for the students who participated in an exchange. Programmes that involve strong quantitative courses have started to be interesting for universities with a quantitative approach which is connected with the recent disturbances in the financial markets that caused a big increase in demand for specialists from the risk measurement and management area. Additionally, a possibility of exchange highly improves the attractiveness of the programme. The aim of the paper is to show the benefits of the Bologna process for universities and students based on the example of the Master studies’ curriculum offered by one of the Polish universities.

Quantitative Methods

Sociology
Undergraduate
UK
Opis:
Various initiatives have been launched to encourage sociology students studying in the UK to engage more with quantitative research methods (for example: Dale et al., 2008; Adney and Carey, 2009; Falkingham et al., 2009), however, their success has been limited. Embedding quantitative methods in substantive sociology curricula has been suggested as one way to reduce students’ anxieties about learning quantitative research methods (Williams et al., 2015). This approach has been employed at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences, where quantitative skills have been strategically incorporated into various aspects of a first year undergraduate substantive module. This paper will reflect on the experience of teaching on this module. The paper will conclude that while the introduction of quantitative content into substantive modules indicates support for change, embedding alone cannot be viewed as a single solution to encouraging to students’ to learn about or utilise quantitative research methods. Two possible reasons for this will be suggested. Firstly, it will be argued that the majority of students no longer pursue sociology at degree level in order to gain the skills to become a competent social researcher, but rather see sociology as a discipline that will equip them with transferable and desirable skills for many occupations. Consequently, engagement with quantitative research methods is not essential to students’ strategic approach to learning as it was for previous generations who wished to understand how to study their social world. Secondly, it will be suggested that the deficit of quantitative methods in mainstream British sociology journals and the methodological preferences of practicing sociologists leads to speculation over the available staff who are capable of delivering an integrated curriculum with quantitative methods embedded in substantive modules.
