The article presents the results of tests of influence of the thermo-mechanical treatment parameters on the mechanical properties and microstructure of steel C70D for wire rod. The methodology of quantitative description of pearlite morphology in steels with the use of the method on which a new computer program “PILS” - Pearlite Inter-Lamellar Spacing is based was presented. In order to verify the method, some quantitative tests of microstructure in samples after physical simulation of heat-plastic treatment were conducted on a deformation dilatometer device with diverse cooling rate for steel C70D. The process of rolling was conducted in simulation in continuous finishing train arrangement. Elaborated program and conducted tests will be used during preparations of modified technologies of wire rod rolling to prepare products made of steel, the microstructure of which is characterised with smaller interlamellar spacing.

The paper presents the results of research concerning the influence of hot plastic working parameters on the deformability and microstructure of a Ni-Fe superalloy. The research was performed on a torsion plastometer in the range of temperatures of 900-1150°C, at a strain rates 0.1 and 1.0 s-1. Plastic properties of the alloy were characterized by the worked out flow curves and the temperature relationships of flow stress and strain limit. The structural inspections were performed on microsections taken from plastometric samples after so-called “freezing”. The stereological parameters as the recrystallized grain size, inhomogenity and grain shape have been determined. Functional relations between the Zener-Hollomon parameter and the maximum yield stress and the average grain area have been developed and the activation energy for hot working has been estimated.

The article presents the results of tests of influence of the thermo-mechanical treatment parameters on the mechanical properties and microstructure of steel 23MnB4 for cold-upsetting. Measurements of the ferrite grains and pearlite colonies were conducted with the use of Met-Ilo program supplemented by additional procedures dedicated to structure analysis of ferritic-pearlitic steel. The process of rolling was conducted in simulation in semi-continuous finishing train arrangement with different temperature and cooling rate. Elaborated procedure of quantitative analysis of microstructure and conducted mechanical properties tests will be used during preparations of modified technologies of wire rod rolling to prepare products made of steel, the microstructure of which is characterised higher utility properties.

Opis:
Magnesium alloys due to their low density and high strength-to-weight ratio are promising material for the automotive and aerospace industries. Many elements made from magnesium alloys are produced by means of sand casting. It is essential to investigate impact of the applied mould components on the microstructure and the quality of the castings. For the research, six identical, 100x50x20mm plates has been sand cast from the Elektron 21 magnesium casting alloy. Each casting was fed and cooled in a different way: one, surrounded by mould sand, two with cast iron chills 20mm and 40mm thick applied, another two with the same chills as well as feeders applied and one with only the feeder applied. Solid solution grain size and eutectics volume fraction were evaluated quantitatively in Met-Ilo program, casting defects were observed on the scanning electron microscope Hitachi S3400N. The finest solid solution grain was observed in the castings with only the chills applied. Non metallic inclusions were observed in each plate. The smallest shrinkage porosity was observed in the castings with the feeders applied.

Opis:
The paper presents the test results of microstructure and resistance to abrasion and erosive wear of single and double-layer coatings with arc-coated powder wires on the iron matrix. It was shown that adhesion of coatings is in the range of 14.39 – 24.72 MPa. The closed porosity of the coatings determined from SEM images is in the range of 0.69 – 2.45% and was significantly lower than the porosity determined from the images obtained from the optical microscope, which was 5.49 – 8.11%. The 95 MXC coating’s hardness of the matrix was about 100HV0.05 higher compared to the AMI 100 coating matrix. The intensity of the erosion of AMI 100 coatings was lower than the intensity of the erosion of 95 MXC coatings.

Opis:
Non-metallic inclusions found in steel can affect its performance characteristics. Their impact depends not only on their quality, but also, among others, on their size and distribution in the steel volume. The literature mainly describes the results of tests on hard steels, particularly bearing steels. The amount of non-metallic inclusions found in steel with a medium carbon content melted under industrial conditions is rarely presented in the literature. The tested steel was melted in an electric arc furnace and then desulfurized and argon-refined. Seven typical industrial melts were analyzed, in which ca. 75% secondary raw materials were used. The amount of non-metallic inclusions was determined by optical and extraction methods. The test results are presented using stereometric indices. Inclusions are characterized by measuring ranges. The chemical composition of steel and contents of inclusions in every melts are presented. The results are shown in graphical form. The presented analysis of the tests results on the amount and size of non-metallic inclusions can be used to assess the operational strength and durability of steel melted and refined in the desulfurization and argon refining processes.

Opis:
A system of non-overlapping random spheres, whose diameters have the Weibull distribution may be used as a model for the graphite in nodule cast iron. For a given material the model probability density function of the Weibull distribution may be determined (as the first approximation) by fitting the PDF of model profile diameters to the one of graphite particle sections. The Weibull distribution may be used as the basis for quantitative metallography of the graphite phase in nodular cast iron.
Układ nienakładających się losowych kul, których średnice mają rozkład Weibulla, może być geometryczno-stochastycznym modelem dla grafitu w żeliwie sferoidalnym. Dla danego żeliwa gęstość prawdopodobieństwa rozkładu Weibulla można wyznaczyć stereologiczną metodą parametryczną poprzez dopasowanie modelowej gęstości prawdopodobieństwa rozkładu średnic przekrojów kul do danych doświadczalnych. Rozkład Weibulla może być podstawą dla metalografii ilościowej grafitu w żeliwie sferoidalnym.

The Ni-base superalloys are used in the aircraft industry for the production of aero engine most stressed parts, turbine blades or turbine discs. Quality of aero jet engine components has a significant influence on the overall lifetime of a jet engine as itself as well as the whole airplane. From this reason a dendrite arm spacing, grain size, morphology, number and value of γ' - phase are very important structural characteristics for blade or discs lifetime prediction. The methods of quantitative metallography are very often used for evaluation of structural characteristics mentioned above. The high-temperature effect on structural characteristics and application of quantitative methods evaluation are presented in this paper. The two different groups of Ni-base alloys have been used as experimental material: cast alloys ZhS6K and IN713LC, which are used for small turbine blades production and wrought alloys EI 698VD and EI 929, which are used for turbine disc production. Selected alloys have been evaluated in the starting stage and after applied heattreatment at 850°C for 24 hrs. This applied heat-treatment causes structural changes in all alloys groups. In cast alloy dendritic structure is degraded and gamma prime average size has grown what has a negative influence on turbine blade creep rupture life. Wrought alloys show partially grain boundary melting and grain size changed due to recrystallization what causes mechanical properties decreasing - ultimate tensile strength mainly.

The Ni – base superalloys are used in aircraft industry for production of aero engine most stressed parts, as are turbine blades or turbine discs. The most stressing factor at Ni – base superalloys loading or working conditions are high temperature range of 700°C up to 850°C and, of course, centrifugal forces, and small vibrations, which produce bending of turbine blades inserted into turbine discs. All these factors cause various forms of microstructure degradation closely connected with decreasing of mechanical properties and shortening of working life as well. From this reason a dendrite arm spacing, carbides size and distribution, morphology, number and value of γ’ - phase are very important structural characteristics for blade lifetime prediction as well as aero engine its self. In this article are used methods of quantitative metallography for evaluation of structural characteristics mentioned above on experimental materials – Ni base superalloys ŽS6K and Inconel IN 738. The high temperature effect represented here by heat treatment at 800°C for 10 hours, and cooling rate, here represented by three various cooling mediums as water, air, and oil, on structural characteristics and application of quantitative methods evaluation with using of SEM are presented in this paper.
