This study presents the hydrochemical composition of groundwater under long-term irrigation of Wonji plain (Ethiopia) and its quality status for drinking purpose. Groundwater samples were collected from 30 groundwater monitoring tube wells installed at different parts of the sugarcane plantation and then analysed for the major physico-chemical quality parameters (pH, EC, major cations and anions) following standard test procedures. The status of groundwater for drinking was compared with WHO and other quality standards. Analytical analysis results indicated that majority of the considered quality parameters are rated above the prescribed tolerable limits for drinking set by WHO. About 97% of the water samples has water quality index in the range of very poor to unfit for drinking. The contamination index is in the ranges of low (–1.0) to high (3.6). In general, the groundwater of the area is unsuitable for human consumption without proper treatment such as boiling, chlorination, filtering, distillation, desalinaization, defluoridation, deionization, demineralization (ionexchange) and membrane processes. Since the TDS concentration is relatively small (<2000 ppm), demineralization process alone can be sufficient to bring the water to an acceptable level.

The paper aims at presentation of the effect of changes in the catchment area management on the value of water quality physicochemical indices along the length of the Iwoniczanka stream, which flows through Iwonicz-Zdrój, one of the oldest health resorts in Poland. Analyses of 14 water quality indices were conducted from November 2013 to May 2014 in five measurement points: two situated in the upper course of the stream – in forest areas, two located in the area of Iwonicz-Zdrój town, and one below the rural built-up area. On the basis of the conducted data analysis it was found that the mean values of pH, electrolytic conductivity, sulphates, calcium, total iron and manganese were increasing with the course of flowing water, as evidenced by the water enrichment in substances which had their sources in built-up areas. On average, the highest values of biogenic indices and chlorides but the lowest values of oxygen indices were registered immediately below the location of drain collector from the closed sewage treatment plant, which resulted in pollution of the analysed stream bed with the substances previously drained from the treatment plant. Water flowing through the forest areas had the maximum ecological potential in the built-up areas and due to phosphate concentrations it was classified to class II and then, due to self-purification, returned to the physicochemical parameters appropriate for class I water. The conducted hydro-chemical tests confirmed a significant negative effect of built-up areas on the quality of the flowing waters.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the ageing period (1, 7, 14, and 21 days) on the quality parameters, sensory attributes, and oxidative stability of loins (longissimuss lumborum muscle) obtained from twelve Simmental calves less than 8 months old and slaughtered in a commercial processing plant. After 21 days, the colour of veal samples became yellower (increase in b* colour parameter value), and the instrumentally-measured texture improved (Warner-Bratzler shear force decreased from 84.61 N to 56.79 N). Ageing time enhanced sensory-evaluated tenderness, juiciness, aroma, and flavour. The amount of the lipid oxidation product determined as thiobarbituric acid reactive substance content remained unchanged; in contrast, the amount of protein carbonyls increased, without compromising veal quality.

This paper presents selected results of research connected with the development of a (3D) geostatistical hydrogeochemical model of the Kłodzko Drainage Basin, dedicated to the spatial variation in the different quality parameters of underground water in the water intake area (SW part of Poland). The research covers the period 2011–2012. Spatial analyses of the variation in various quality parameters, i.e., contents of: iron, manganese, ammonium ion, nitrate ion, phosphate ion, total organic carbon, pH redox potential and temperature, were carried out on the basis of the chemical determinations of the quality parameters of underground water samples taken from the wells in the water intake area. Spatial variation in the parameters was analyzed on the basis of data obtained (November 2011) from tests of water taken from 14 existing wells with a depth ranging from 9.5 to 38.0 m b.g.l. The latest data (January 2012) were obtained (gained) from 3 new piezometers, made in other locations in the relevant area. A depth of these piezometers amounts to 9–10 m. Data derived from 14 wells (2011) and 14 wells + 3 piezometers (2012) were subjected to spatial analyses using geostatistical methods. The evaluation of basic statistics of the quality parameters, including their histograms of distributions, scatter diagrams and correlation coefficient values r were presented. The directional semivariogram function γ(h) and the ordinary (block) kriging procedure were used to build the 3D geostatistical model. The geostatistical parameters of the theoretical models of directional semivariograms of the water quality parameters under study, calculated along the wells depth (taking into account the terrain elevation), were used in the ordinary (block) kriging estimation. The obtained results of estimation, i.e., block diagrams allowed us to determine the levels of increased values of estimated averages Z* of underground water quality parameters.

The purpose of this research conducted between October 2018 and April 2019 was to determine the effect of the first and second transitional season on the nutrient profile in Ciletuh Bay. The data used in this research and directly taken from the research site were seawater quality parameters, analysis of granulometry sample and analysis of nutrient profile, while all data processing was conducted in a laboratory. The method used in this study was purposive sampling. The results of this research indicated that the nutrient profile in the first transitional season is higher than the second transition season. This is due to the introduction of organic matter into the waters. From this research it can be concluded that the first transitional season affects the concentration of nutrient in Ciletuh Bay.

The purpose of the study undertaken between May 2018 and April 2019 is to determine the effect of rain water intensity on the value of macrozoobenthos structures in Ciletuh Bay. The data used in this research and directly taken from the research site are seawater quality parameters, analysis of sample granulometry and identification of the sample macrzoobenthos, while all data processing was conducted in the laboratory. The method used in this study was purposive sampling. The result of this research in sand type sediment texture brought a count of 96 macrozoobenthos individuals. In contrast, the count was only 7 in silt type sediments. The study concluded that the effect of varied rainfall intensity impacts the water quality parameters that caused the difference types of sediment in Ciletuh Bay.

The paper presents the changes of coal seams quality near fault zones. Three types of relations have been found. The first one shows an increase of coal quality at the 0.2 m distance from fault surface, as a result of increase of coalification degree. It is assumed that, this type was caused by heat of friction which was rising during faulting. It is revealed as an increase of such parameters as: caking properties, vitrinite reflectance, calorific value and carbon content, as well as the decrease of oxygen, ash, and moisture content. The second type presents differed degree of coal quality decrease. This type was produced due to hypergenic processes. The author found four subtypes of oxidation-type changes of coal quality parameters in fault zones. The first one shows the highest level of hypergenic processes in a coal seam about 1 m off a fault plane. The second presents minor degree of oxidation processes in the coal seam at a smaller distance from the fault. The third one demonstrates minimum oxidation changes of coal quality at a distance of 0.2 m from the fault. The fourth subtype of the oxidation changes of coal quality has been observed only in tectonic breccia and not in the coal seams itself.The third types demonstrates faults which do not show any impact on changes of coal quality parameters. To this type belong faults from SW part of USCB and faults with downthrown up to 20 m.

This research applied a machine learning technique for predicting the water quality parameters of Kelantan River using the historical data collected from various stations. Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used to develop the prediction model. Six water quality parameters (dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and suspended solids (SS)) were predicted. The dataset was obtained from the measurement of 14 stations of Kelantan River from September 2005 to December 2017 with a total sample of 148 monthly data. We defined 3 schemes of prediction to investigate the contribution of the attribute number and the model performance. The outcome of the study demonstrated that the prediction of the suspended solid parameter gave the best performance, which was indicated by the highest values of the R2 score. Meanwhile, the prediction of the COD parameter gave the lowest score of R2 score, indicating the difficulty of the dataset to be modelled by SVM. The analysis of the contribution of attribute number shows that the prediction of the four parameters (DO, BOD, NH3-N, and SS) is directly proportional to the performance of the model. Similarly, the best prediction of the pH parameter is obtained from the utilization of the least number of attributes found in scheme 1.

Nitrogen fertilization is the basic element of a wheat cultivation technology, affecting the volume and quality of grain yield. The aim of this study, conducted in 2016-2019, was to assess the yield, quality parameters and chemical composition of the grain of hybrid cultivars fertilized with higher doses of nitrogen compared to a winter wheat population cultivar. The experiment was established on brown peat with the textural composition of silt loam (2016/2017 and 2018/2019) and clay loam (2017/2018). The soil was classified as a Fluvic Cambisol (CMfv). The first factor studied was nitrogen fertilization at doses: N150 – 150 kg ha-1 (three applications: 60+50+40) and N200 – 200 kg ha-1 (four applications: 60+80+40+20). The second factor was four cultivars of winter wheat: hybrid cultivars Hyking, Hypocamp and Hyvento, and a population variety Artist. The grain of the hybrid cultivars had good quality parameters (Hyking, Hyvento) and higher yields as well as a greater content of iron, copper, zinc and phosphorus in the grain (Hypocamp) compared to the population cultivar. The weather conditions with less rainfall, including a very dry period during wheat grain formation and maturation, depressed the grain yield but resulted in better quality traits and a higher content of macro- and micronutrients (Fe, Zn, Cu) in the grain. The application of a nitrogen dose of 200 kg ha-1 compared to 150 kg ha-1 caused an increase in the yield and quality of the hybrid wheat grain, without differentiating the mineral composition of grain in terms of the content of K, Ca and Mg as well as Zn and Mn.

The main idea of the work is to create scientifically grounded technological conditions for treatment of tab grooves in the discs from heat resisting steel, which stipulate formation of roughness of treated surfaces at the level of design requirements, useful compressive residual stresses and a defective surface layer, which increases reliability of operation of interlock in the absence of any defects on the working surfaces of tab grooves of various types, under conditions of maximizing efficiency of their treatment method. Dependences of roughness of the treated surface on the technological factors of the broaching process Ra = f (V, S, γ, HRC) have been proposed. As a result of experimental studies, the nature of distribution of residual stresses, depth and degree of strengthening of the surface layer, depending on the technological conditions of the tab grooves treatment, has been established. The article presents research of surface quality parameters; study all the selected parameters of the surface quality and surface layer and an algorithm to perform experimental work. The algorithm has been built on major principles of control and fixation methods, which stipulate use of non-destructive methods of control. Graphs of strengthening the surface layer of samples, depending on their processing modes and graphs of the distribution of residual stresses in the surface layer are also presented.

The subject of the paper is the possibility of determining parameters of rock quality on the basis of rating points in the Bieniawski method and comparison of the values obtained with the results of acoustic measurements of the massif. The value of the critical relative strain of a rock block is determined and described, the magnitude of which allows its parameters to be treated as rock mass parameters. The product of the critical relative strain of the rock block and its acoustic modulus determines the compressive strength of the rock mass. A modified Bieniawski rating point table is given and the compressive strength, modulus of elasticity of the massif, and the compressive strength of a laboratory rock sample are calculated from several correlation relations.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest możliwość określania parametrów jakości masywu skalnego na podstawie punktów ratingowych w sposobie wg Bieniawskiego i porównanie otrzymanych wartości z wynikami pomiarów akustycznych masywu. Wyznaczona i opisana została wartość krytycznego odkształcenia względnego bloczka skalnego, którego wielkość pozwala traktować jego parametry jako parametry masywu skalnego. Iloczyn wartości krytycznego odkształcenia względnego bloczka skalnego oraz jego modułu akustycznego określa wartość wytrzymałości na ściskanie masywu skalnego. Podano zmodyfikowaną tabelę punktów ratingowych według Bieniawskiego i z kilku zależności korelacyjnych obliczono wytrzymałość na ściskanie, moduł sprężystości masywu oraz wytrzymałość na ściskanie laboratoryjnej próbki skalnej.

Steel is currently main structural material in the world. Pig iron, which is the basic product of blast furnace process, is the semi-product used in steel-making processes. It is an alloy of iron with carbon containing above 2% C and other elements with limited content, intended for further processing. Chemical composition of pig iron is its basic quality factor, it defines its class and meeting requirements set by steel plant department. It is important that this chemical composition is as stable as possible. In addition, the temperature of pig iron is also very important quality parameter. The paper presents statistical analysis of quality parameters of pig iron produced in one of Polish steelworks. The content of alloying elements and temperature of tapping of pig iron from blast furnace were examined. The amount of non-conforming production and the losses related to the low quality were assessed.

W artykule scharakteryzowano kryteria doboru parametrów klasyfikacyjnych węgla kamiennego. Przedstawiono propozycję klasyfikacji węgla wg typów. Zaproponowano następujące parametry jakościowe węgla dla jego klasyfikacji wg typów: zawartość części lotnych Vdaf, wskaźnik średniej refleksyjności witrynitu R, wskaźnik wolnego wydymania FSI. Wykazano różnice w zaklasyfikowaniu węgla według aktualnej klasyfikacji oraz nowej propozycji.
This paper describes the selection criteria for the classification parameters of coal. A proposal of classification by type of coal has been presented. The following quality parameters of coal for its classification by type has been proposed: volatile matter content Vdaf, vitrinite mean random reflectance R, free swelling index FSI. The differences in the classifying of coal according to the current classification and a new proposal was also discused.

Przedstawiono koncepcję oceny podstawowych parametrów energetycznych odpadowej gliceryny, będącej produktem ubocznym w produkcji estrów metylowych z olei roślinnych, która może być wykorzystana jako nośnik „zielonej energii” w procesach współspalania z tradycyjnymi paliwami pochodzenia kopalnego. Zastosowanie gliceryny jako ciekłego biopaliwa wymaga ciągłego monitorowania jej parametrów jakościowych. Przedstawiono metody oznaczania zawartości wody, popiołu i oznaczania ciepła spalania oraz metody obliczania wartości opałowej. Parametry te mają istotny wpływ na energetyczną ocenę przydatności odpadowej gliceryny technicznej jako paliwa biogennego.
Utilization of waste glycerine obtained in production of methyl esters from vegetable oils is presented. Nowadays it is possible to use it as a „green energy” carrier in the process of co-firing with coal. However characteristics of glycerine utilized as liquid biomass fuel have to be monitored. Therefore, analytical methods to determine water and ash content, heat of combustion as well as method to calculate calorific value of pure, technical and waste glycerine are also presented. Those parameters have a large impact on its combustion process.

The chemistry- and physics-based approach of conservation has led to the view that conservator-restorers use quantitative criteria which provide objective choices. Today, however, there is a shift of focus from material-centred to people-oriented approaches within the field of heritage preservation. This shift leads to a redefinition of the conservation-restoration field and its ethics in relation to society and calls for the adoption of diverse methodologies. Within this context, this paper discusses the qualitative factors which inform decision-making processes in conservation-restoration practice. More specifically, the paper examines the case of the so called “Tower of the Winds” in Athens and looks at the quality parameters which informed conservation-restoration work carried out at the Tower during 2014-2015. Overall, it is shown that the prominence of the quality parameters which inform contemporary conservation-restoration practice reveals the subjective dimension of conservation-restoration choices. The research has also showed that current trends tend to emphasize the historical rather than the aesthetic or other values of monuments.
