W artykule podjęto problem oceny jakości życia w Katowicach w kategorii mobilności. Ocenę (wstępną) dokonano w oparciu o badania ankietowe przeprowadzone na grupie studentów (stacjonarnych i niestacjonarnych) Uniwersytetu Ekonomicznego w Katowicach. Uzyskane wyniki stanowią ciekawą przestrzeń badawczą, wskazując na odczucia młodych ludzi w zakresie przyszłych działań mogących podnieść odczuwany poziom jakości życia w Katowicach.  
In the article a problem of the evaluation of the quality of living in Katowice in the category was taken mobilities. Evaluation (preliminary) they made students based on questionnaire surveys conducted on the group (stationary and nonstationary) of Economic University in Katowice. Achieved results constitute the interesting research space, showing the quality of living in Katowice young people to feelings in future action being able to raise the felt level.

Opis:
Tematyka związana z rozwojem małych miast jest jeszcze wciąż stosunkowo rzadko podejmowana (w stosunku do miast dużych). Wynika to m.in. z nowych jakościowo możliwości rozwoju tych ośrodków po wstąpieniu Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Stąd konieczność przeprowadzania kompleksowych analiz. Potrzebne jest również jednoznaczne określenie, jaki ośrodek można zdefiniować jako mały. W tym zakresie są duże różnice między poszczególnymi krajami. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań własnych – analiz urbanistycznych i badań środowiskowych, dotyczących oceny jakości środowiska mieszkaniowego (zamieszkania) w wybranych małych miastach województwa podkarpackiego. Na podstawie badań określone zostały atuty i główne problemy tych miast. Wnioski, jakie wypływają z tych badań, mogą być przydatne do programowania dalszych analiz oraz przy podejmowaniu konkretnych decyzji administracyjnych przez władze lokalne.
Topic related to the development of the small town is still a relatively rarely taken (compared to the big cities). This is due to, among others, qualitatively new possibilities for the development of these centers after Polish accession to the EU, hence the need for comprehensive analyzes; as well as those that would clearly define what type of center can be described as small. The work will present the results of own research – analysis of urban and environmental studies, concerning the evaluation of the quality of the living environment (residential) in selected small towns of Podkarpacie. On the basis of the evaluation in was possible to distinct certain assets and the main problems of these cities. Conclusions drawn from these studies can be useful for programming further analysis and in decision-making by local authorities.

Opis:
The basic resource of urban planning is space, which as a result of transformation has a direct impact on socio-economic development and quality of life. The author’s purpose was to define planning solutions for urban spatial policy, which can raise the quality of living, especially in the residential environment. In connection with the above, the literature of the subject was analysed and examples of good spatial policy and urban development in the living environment were shown. Particular attention was paid to the planning solutions in Paris and Vienna, as well as to the examples of the new living environment creation in some Scandinavian cities.

Opis:
(Polish title: Analiza jakosci zycia osob bezrobotnych zarejestrowanych w powiatowym urzedzie pracy w Bydgoszczy). The study was carried out on the basis of interviews, conducted directly with 200 randomly chosen people, registered as unemployed in the council labour offices in Bydgoszcz in September 2009. The main tool in this survey was a specially prepared questionnaire which made possible the collection of information on the following topics: the socio-demographic characteristics of the person taking part in the study, their current situation on the job market and the material and immaterial aspects of their lives. Questionnaire also allowed to explore the subjective feelings of respondents on the quality of their lives.

This article is aimed to show differences in quality of life regarding education and employment in a given area. The research hypothesis assumes the presence of the difference in quality of life across Poland and of interrelation between the quality of life and the living standards. The studies were conducted on a group of respondents selected intentionally from three provinces. The provinces were selected using a multidimensional analysis and the criterion for selection was the living standards of Polish residents. The studies were conducted as part of the individual Research Grant launched in 2011 under the title: “Living standards and quality of life among Polish residents” 1708/B/H03/2011/40 from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

The aim of the article is to present the quality of life as a category which is used on the basis of social sciences, especially sociology, in the theoretical and empiricalaspect. It describes problems connected with quality of life defining. Complicated genesis, as well as interest in the issue of quality of life of representatives of various disciplines makes it difficult to understand it in an unequivocal way. On the basis of sociology, it has an intersubjective dimension, because the subject of the quality of life in sociological research is the community that is considered in a specific socio-cultural context. Its members express opinions about particular spheres of their own lives, assessing the level of their well-being. An example of sociological research on the quality of life are research carried out in Rybnik. While designing this research, the quality of life was operationalized by selecting indicators that were used in survey questions. The article presents selected results of research on the quality of life of Rybnik, and also draws attention to methodological problems encountered by sociologists investigating this issue.

Euroorphanhood concerns of older people whose children are staying abroad for a long time (in the project at least 12 months). Traditional network of support in Polish society is based on familiocentrism. According to this theory, the younger generations have obligations to the oldest members of their families which arising from the bonds of blood. Phenomenon of interest to us is its existential dimension (quality of life) and essential (quality of life). It is equally important, the objective (defined state of affairs) and subjective (personal sense of quality of life) approach. Euroorphanhood is a development phenomenon, because of a large spatial mobility of the younger generation on the one hand and quickly extending of the human life cycle. In this approach euroorphanhood will be subjected to empirical testing – it will be a comparative study in three countries: Lithuania, Latvia, Poland.

Under conditions of aggravation of external and internal contradictions of economic character, importance of increase of the state national security level, an urgent need of search of system algorithm for construction of integral paradigm of economic security appears. The main trend of further economic development of society is the connection of economic security of the state and the welfare economy of society in a single target function, which fully reveals and realizes the economic potential of the state and society. The level of the country’s welfare is the basis for making certain government decisions in the socio-economic sphere. It has been noted that economic security of welfare is ensuring the protection of interests and creating favorable conditions for ensuring a high standard of living and welfare of society in the implementation of the State Strategy for Economic Security. The place of economic security of welfare in the system of national security has been determined - the high level of its realization is a springboard for strengthening and further development of other components of the country’s economic life. Improvement of the public administration efficiency is one of the conditions for ensuring sustainable socio-economic development of the country, region and raising of living standards of the population.

The paper presents a theoretical analysis of the links between human health and the quality of life, referring to the period of the old age and aging. The starting point for the analysis was the systemic, holistic and salutogenetic approach to health as physical, mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing, the level of which is determined not only by the human biology but also lifestyle and factors in the living environment. The article shows that wellbeing, which is achieved, among other things, through an active lifestyle and good living conditions, is a category uniting health and the quality of life in the subjective and objective dimensions. Given the inevitability of involutional biological changes and social inequalities in the period of aging and the old age, it was recognized that pedagogical activities aimed at improving the quality of life of seniors are a part of the educational aspects of health promotion. The purpose of “education in the old age” is to free the health potential of senior citizens by stimulating their active lifestyle, which, however, requires education to prepare people for their old age.

The main goal of the article is to describe selected components of standard of living and quality of life within the Polish diaspora of the Greater Toronto Area which includes four districts: Halton, Peel, York and Durham. An author-composed model of mutually affecting objective factors (standard of living) and subjective factors (quality of life) will be presented in the paper. Individual factors (demographic, social, cultural, economic, legal, educational, geographical, and health-related) included in the field research among respondents and based on assigned indices influencing the quality of life in the Polish diaspora of the Greater Toronto Area, will be presented. The evaluation of satisfaction with areas of life selected by the Canadian Polish diaspora will be discussed, as well as their evaluation of standard of living in the Greater Toronto Area, such as Polish schools, parishes, travel agencies, and non-governmental organisations (such as the Song and Dance Ensemble or scouting). Their evaluation of whether their needs were met and accessibility to selected components of the city will also be analysed. Data correlating the length of time respondents have lived in Toronto, and a general evaluation of the quality of life will be presented.

The paper describes a very complex research problem of urban living conditions in Piotrków Trybunalski and factors affecting them in the context of consequences of the system transformation in Poland. The analysis employs objective indices describing living, housing, working and leisure/recreation conditions in Piotrków Trybunalski. The knowledge about the level of the local community need satisfaction has been gained as a result of a field measurement on a representative (random) sample of Piotrków Trybunalski inhabitants. The key element affecting the level of satisfaction among inhabitants with their own residential environment is in the light of the work results the building aesthetics and the availability of social services (especially primary healthcare facilities and public libraries).
W artykule przedstawiono diagnozę warunków życia w Piotrkowie oraz czynników na nie oddziałujących w kontekście konsekwencji transformacji ustrojowej Polski w oparciu o dostępne materiały źródłowe, jak i własne badania. Decydujące oddziaływanie na poziom zadowolenia mieszkańców z własnego środowiska zamieszkania ma w świetle wyników pracy estetyka zabudowy. Szczególnie ważne jest dla nich ponadto rozmieszczenie w najbliższej okolicy obiektów usług społecznych: podstawowej opieki zdrowotnej oraz bibliotek.

The study aims to present the need to improve education at Slovak educational centres in Great Britain based on respondents’ opinions. The research sample consisted of 56 members of the teaching staff, 81 parents and 37 children from 13 centres. Data were gathered by an electronic questionnaire modified for each respondent group. Data were processed in the program Štatistika, evaluated by descriptive statistics and hypotheses by inference statistics. Research results indicated the need to increase the quality of instruction, mainly in the innovation of methods, provision of didactic aids, support for teachers and appropriateness of instruction to children’s language skills.

In the last 30-40 years there has been an increased interest in research on socio‑economic changes. Thus, there has been a shift away from measuring only the material dimension of development. Researchers started using categories such as: consumption, standard of living, level of living, economic welfare, wealth, living conditions, quality of life, a way of life, lifestyle, etc. The problem that we face in quite extensive literature is the lack of application of a uniform terminology. Attempts to define these categories should be regarded as not fully satisfactory because they do not allow the adoption of clear solutions. We can only point out some proposals that include many significant features conducive to the study of the social dimension of the economic transition. This article attempts to resolve problems of the definitions of three basic categories related to the study of socio-economic changes, which are: conditions of life, standard of living and quality of life.
