Opis:: The Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering (OaSES; yaruss & Quesal, 2006; 2016) is a comprehensive evaluation tool designed to support holistic, evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making for children, teenagers, and adults who stutter. The OASES is based on the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (WHO, 2001) as adapted to stuttering by Yaruss and Quesal (2004; see also Tichenor & Yaruss, 2019). It enables diagnosticians to gather information about the totality of the stuttering experience, including its social, emotional, and cognitive aspects. It also allows a deep exploration of the quality of life of an individual who stutters. This paper presents the study results for the Polish version of the OASES-S (for school-age children, ages 7 to 12). The general purpose of the study was to develop the Polish translation of the OASES-S and then to evaluate the validity and reliability of that translation. The OASES-S-PL was evaluated based on a sample of 55 Polish-speaking school-age children who stutter. The study findings show that OASES-S-PL can be considered a high validity test. Given the limited number of evidence-based and standardized Polish diagnostic tools, the OASES-S-PL has important therapeutic implications for the treatment of stuttering in the population of polish children.

Opis:: Gynecological cancers, due to their location and relation to the aspects of femininity, reproductive ability and body image, are associated not only with the physical dimension of cancer, but also with the mental sphere. The loss of fertility may lead to feelings of sadness and grief that remain for a very long time after the treatment. In patients with gynecological cancers, the increased risk of early menopause, loss of femininity, decreased libido, or distorted body image can affect their quality of life. The distress emerging in this situation may further worsen the health condition and negatively affect the quality of life and ability to mobilize the organism to fight against the disease. For this reason, it is important to monitor the level of distress and quality of life using available questionnaires and measurement tools. Psychological interventions and psychotherapy can help women with gynecological cancers raise their self-esteem related e.g. to corporeality, improve the overall quality of life and reduce the psychological distress caused by the disease and the treatment itself.

Opis:: The paper presents some conceptual and theoretical considerations concerning Quality of Life (QOL) in cancer patients. In this paper attention will be paid, firstly, to the meaning of two different forms of conceptualisation QOL (subjective and objective), secondly, to the factors contributing to the quality of life, thirdly, to role of mental adjustment to illness. At present, health related quality of life is understood as the way in which physical, emotional and social functioning is affected by illness and its treatment. There is no agreement regarding to the concept or the way to conceptualise quality of life. QOL is an aggregation of the evaluation of different aspects of life. Cancer and cancer treatments have an impact on these aspects of life. Some personal mechanisms and characteristics may play role in the evaluation of quality of life. First of all, cognitive process may influence on different ways used to restructure the experience of the situation in order to make life more bearable. The way in which people cope with a distressing situation may influence on the assessment of their quality o life.

Opis:: Venous insufficiency is a common, chronic disease that affects nearly half of the population in highly developed countries. The vast majority of affected patients suffer from varicose veins (VV). Recently, the priority in medicine has been patient satisfaction with treatment and high quality of life. Therefore, disease-specific questionnaires that measure quality of life have been developed. One of these is VEINES-QOL/Sym with two subscales that assess quality of life and disease symptoms. To date, it has been used to examine patients with venous ulcers and thrombosis. No data are available concerning the use of VEINES to assess patients after VV surgery. The aim of the study was to investigate the change in QOL after VV surgery and verify the usefulness of VEINES in daily phlebological practice. Material and methods. The study recruited 69 patients (CEAP class C2-C3) in need of surgery for VV. The patients responded 2 hours before surgery and after 3 months. Patients were differentiated into several categories according to CEAP stage, age, sex, BMI, the use/lack of compression therapy, and education level. Results. The quality of life increased significantly in C3 patients and in patients over the age of 50. Quality of life increased significantly in all patients regardless of education. There were no differences between groups differentiated according to sex, the use or lack of compression therapy, or BMI. Conclusions. The VEINES-QOL/Sym questionnaire can be used in daily phlebological practice to assess patients before and after surgical treatment of VV. VEINES-QOL/Sym is reliable and highly valid.

Opis:: Coraz powszechniej akceptowany jest pogląd, że wzrost gospodarczy mierzony jako PKB nie prowadzi automatycznie do większego zadowolenia ludzi z życia. Nawet Human Development Raport, który uwzględnia długość życia, edukację i dochód w perspektywie porównawczej w różnych krajach, nie jest na tyle kompletny, aby opisać dobrobyt, dobrostan i jakość życia. Opracowanie lepszych strategii walki z wykluczeniem społecznym i niezadowoleniem wśród ludzi wymaga dokładniejszych danych empirycznych na temat obiektywnych struktur i rozwoju, jak również na temat ich percepcji i oceny. Tymczasem w środowisku akademickim istnieją kontrowersje dotyczące zakresu znaczeniowego takich ogólnych pojęć jak dobrobyt, dobrostan i jakość życia. Mimo braku powszechnie akceptowanych definicji, obserwujemy postęp w zakresie pomiaru, w rezultacie którego otrzymujemy wystarczające informacje dla społeczeństwa i polityków, pozwalające zmieniać na lepsze sytuację, podwyższać jakość życia ludzi.
More and more it is accepted that economic growth measured as GDP will not automatically lead to greater satisfaction in people’s lives. Even the Human Development Report which provides a comparative view of life expectancy, schooling and income in different countries, is not comprehensive enough to describe welfare, well-being and quality of life. To design better strategies for fighting social exclusion and dissatisfaction among people we need better empirical data on objective structures and development as well as on their subjective perceptions. However, the broad concepts of welfare, well-being and quality of life do not enjoy common acceptance within the academic community. Nevertheless, there is progress concerning more appropriate measures for receiving enough information for the public and the politicians to improve the overall situation concerning the quality of life.
