The aim of this article is to present youth subcultures, which still have not been analyzed deep enough by social scientists. While new types of subcultures are forming around the world, ‘classic’ subcultures are still very interesting. This article presents norms and values of three youth subcultures in the changing modern world. They were called symbolic subcultures (T. Paleczny, 1997). This article is based on 21 in-depth interviews done in 2009 with members of three subcultures - Skinheads, Punks and Metalheads. Skinheads and Punks were chosen to this analysis because they seems to be opponents in their values. Metalheads in literature are described as those without any specific value. However this research did not confirm this fact. This article shows what are the most important things in subcultures' members' lifes and what kind of rules dominate their social world.

Opis:
Prezentowany artykuł dotyczy różnych problemowych i teoretycznych ujęć dotyczących określenia „subkultury”. Przyjęto i zastosowano trzy poziomy analizy: kategorialny, definicyjny i faktograficzny. W ujęciu kategorialnym i definicyjnym odniesiono się do rozumienia pojęcia „młodzież” w różnych kontekstach znaczeniowych. W dalszej kolejności zaprezentowano motywy przystąpienia młodzieży do subkultur w relacji do preferowanego systemu wartości. Przywołano również wybrane teorie subkultur dewiacyjnych, a także teorie konfliktu kultur i anomii. Przechodząc do części faktograficznej, omówiono przypadek „skinhead” jako subkulturę ucieczki i izolacji w świecie i w Polsce, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich ideologii. W kontekście porównawczym przywołano subkulturę „punk” jako wyraz buntu społeczno-obyczajowego, również w odniesieniu do świata i Polski, z uwzględnieniem ich ideologii (a w zasadzie jej braku).
This paper deals with various problembased and theoretical approaches of the term “subculture”. The analysis was performed under three differing aspects: categorical, definitional and factographical. The categorical and definitional approach examined the use of the term “młodzież= juvenile/ youth” in different contexts. In the following we investigated the various reasons that dispose young persons to hook up with some form or other of “subculture”, depending on their respective value systems. We drew on select theories on deviant subcultures, the theory of culture conflict and anomia. The factographical part examines the exemplary case of the “skinheads”, represented as a subculture of evasion and isolation, as a worldwide phenomena and in its Polish variety, in particular representing their “ideology”. We compared them with the “punk” subculture as a protest on the sociocultural level, likewise on a worldwide and national scale, investigating their ideology- or- more to the point- the lack of any ideology.

Artykuł przedstawia początki polskiego ruchu punk na tle specyficznej sytuacji społeczno – politycznej, którą można określić mianem „kryzysu nowej umowy społecznej”. Tekst próbuje odpowiedzieć, w jaki sposób permanentny kryzys, w jakim znajdowała się Polska na przełomie lat 70. i 80. XX w., wpłynął na rozwój nowej kontrkultury. Prezentuje kluczowe zespoły pierwszej fali polskiego punk rocka oraz sylwetki głównych uczestników zjawiska wraz z ich profilem socjologicznym. Ponadto artykuł podejmuje kwestię stosunku polskiego ruchu punkowego do władzy ludowej oraz opozycji politycznej.
This article presents the rudiments of Polish punk movement, including thesocial and political background which can be defined as “acrisis of thenew social contract”. It tries to explain how the crisis situation in the late 1970’s and the early 1980’s contributed to the development of a new counterculture in Poland. It shows the most important bands of the Polish punk’s first wave and also thefigures of themain participants of this phenomenon with their sociological profile. Finally,thearticle discusses the Polish punk movement’s attitude to communist government and thedemocratic opposition.

W artykule rozważam problem norm i wartości, jakimi kierują się obecnie przedstawiciele subkultury punk. Chcąc uchwycić przemianę, jakiej uległy subkultury, wyszedłem z baumanowskiej koncepcji ponowoczesności. Przedstawiam obraz współczesnych punków z punktu widzenia Davida Muggletona, twórcy pojęcia „postsubkutury”, oraz staram się udowodnić, że zaproponowana przez niego koncepcja zbyt krytycznie i jednostronnie postrzega problem współczesnych grup o charakterze subkulturowym. Proponuję, aby analiza zjawiska subkultury punk uwzględniała pojęcie „ekskorporacji” Johna Fiske oraz „taktyk” i „strategii” działania opisywanych przez Michela de Certeau.

In relation to the overarching theme of the volume, this article investigates the problem of ageing within the punk subculture in Poland and punk abroad as relevant to Polish punks. It challenges the notion that punk is a youth subculture and on the examples of prominent punk performers on the Polish scene and abroad demonstrates how important the continuous involvement of people aged 35-70 is for their communities and for the subculture as such, also in terms of their cooperation with younger performers and the younger generations’ understanding of continuity and tradition within punk. The framework for this investigation includes the philosophical understanding of punk as a movement dating back to its roots in Dadaism and Situationism, as well as its concrete manifestations as observed in the ethnographies of selected communities in Poland, conducted by the author. The analysis is sensitive to the economic and political contexts of the transformation of 1989 and the transnational and simultaneously local nature of the punk subculture, which in its artistic output as well as in its practices underlines the importance of specific older performers or activists.
Artykuł dotyczy kwestii starzenia się członków subkultury punk w Polsce oraz w innych krajach, z którymi polskie środowisko punk jest związane. Autorka podważa pogląd, że punków zaliczyć można do subkultur młodzieżowych, i podaje przykłady istotnego wpływu starszych członków tej subkultury, w szczególności członków zespołów i autorów tekstów. Analizuje ona stosunek młodszych punkowców do tych w wieku średnim lub starszych oraz ich oceny ciągłości subkultury i roli starszych jej członków. Podłożem teoretycznym tej analizy jest rozumienie ruchu punk m.in. przez Greila Marcusa, łączące punk z wcześniejszymi zjawiskami, jak dadaizm i sytuacjonizm, oraz z założeniami tych nurtów. Artykuł opiera się na przykładach konkretnych wykonawców, zakorzenionych w społecznościach punkowych w Warszawie i na Górnym Śląsku, których etnografię spisała autorka w latach 2012–2013 w kontekście transformacji gospodarczej oraz trwałych związków międzynarodowych, szczególnie pomiędzy punkami w Polsce i w USA oraz Wielkiej Brytanii. W społecznościach tych zaobserwować można przykłady systematycznego wyrażania szacunku do punkowej „starszyzny,” zarówno tej z podwórka, jak i z dalszych regionów, w ramach określonych praktyk międzynarodowej kultury DIY. Omówione są też formy czynnego udziału tejże „starszyzny” w kształtowaniu poglądów i praktyk składających się na esencję punk rocka.

There are connections between the re-birth of anarchism as a social movement in the 1960s and the emergence of music and youth subcultures around the same time. This chapter explores these relations pointing out to more than simple time correlation between the two processes. The paper looks at which elements of the new wave of anarchist movement resonate the best with the D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) punk and hardcore music scenes. The paper investigates not only organizational dimensions of the connections, but also looks at the spatial aspect.

Representatives of the Polish punk-rock scene were careful observers of political, social and economic unrest in the world since the late 1970s and in the 1980s. A large part of the texts, written at that time, aptly commented on the tragic events in the world. Unfortunately, some of them haven’t lost their validity, like the song by KSU entitled ‘Liban’ [‘Lebanon’], or by the band ‘Brak’ [‘The Lack’] entitled ‘Na Bliskim Wschodzie wszystko w porządku’ [‘In the Middle East Everything’s All Right’]. After 1989, more songs, referring to various old or new threats in the world, were written. Songs, produced within the punk scene, describe the problems of political, economic and social nature, which remain unresolved. Authors, such as Maciej Augustyn, Krzysztof Grabowski, Kazik Staszewski not only point to the genesis of security problems in the world, but sometimes predict the consequences of such events in a broader perspective. Surprisingly, anticipations of some authors who are not political scientists or sociologists, come true more frequently than scientific analyses made by security experts. Suffice it to say that almost at the same time when Fukuyma guaranteed that happiness of humanity would be manifested in liberal democracy, Staszewski and Grabowski warned people of imminent wars, crises, a new division of the world and exploitation.

The article is showing the presence of vulgar expressions in song lyrics. This is a clear testimony to the changes in the customs and language of culture of recent decades. The paradox is that the development of negative phenomena can contribute to events naturally valued positively, such as expanding the sphere of freedom together with the birth of “Solidarity” or the abolition of the censorship institution with the transformation after 1989. Vulgarism today, after more than a quarter of a century since the release of language from the “care” of censorship, is intensively present in songs that many Poles find important. This stylistic device helps to express and shapes the expressed emotions, describe reality, and it is a manifestation of the generational fear of the sublime. The text discusses the songs of authors such as: Andrzej Garczarek, Jacek Kaczmarski, Kazik Staszewski, Krzysztof Grabowski (Grabaż), Marcin Świetlicki, Hubert Dobaczewski (Spięty), Paweł Sołtys (Pablopavo).

With the release of 50 Shades of Grey film version a few days before Valentine’s Day 2015, and its immediate box office success, sadomasochistic aesthetics seems to have finally made its way into mainstream popular culture. This feat, however, is only seemingly an accomplishment in liberalisation of general approach towards sexuality. The novel is rather an attempt to commercialise BDSM as a mass-market consumerist option, which compromises its original, subversive potential. The aim of this paper is to study sadomasochism historically, as a tool used to denounce the limitations of democracy and formal equality, and in this context to show how much Fifty Shades of Grey is not subversive but actually profoundly regressive. Beginning with what Slavoj Žižek refers to as “the heroism of the Marquis de Sade’s project for a democracy of enjoyment” voiced at times of libertarianism and the French Revolution’s declaration of universal human rights, the paper retraces how sadomasochism re-emerged throughout modern popular culture (Bloomsbury group, punk) providing means for the exploration of personal freedom and the extremes to which it can be taken. In this context, Fifty Shades of Grey is a great step back as it reiterates traditionalist stereotypes concerning sexuality and gender roles. The novel categorises good and bad sex, stigmatises homosexuality, presents BDSM as an illness that “only love can cure”, and entrenches 19th century’s definitions of masculinity and womanhood. Under the guise of promoting kinky sex, it introduces a new normativity whose laws are dictated by market economy.
Wraz z wejściem na ekrany filmu Pięćdziesiąt twarzy Greya kilka dni przed walentynkami 2015 i jego sukcesem kasowym, estetyka sadomasochistyczna dotarła na dobre do mainstreamu popkultury. Jednak tylko pozornie jest to osiągnięcie na drodze do większej liberalności w podejściu do seksualności. Powieść jest raczej próbą skomercjalizowania BDSM jako jednego z towarów na masowym rynku konsumenckim, co stoi w sprzeczności z jej oryginalnym subwersyjym charakterem. Celem tego artykułu jest analiza sadomasochizmu z perspektywy historycznej jako narzędzie do obnażenia ograniczeń demokracji i równości i co za tym idzie ukazanie, że Pięćdziesiąt twarzy Greya jest raczej głęboko wsteczne niż subwersyjne. Rozpoczynając od tego, co Slavoj Žižek określił jako “heroism projektu markiza de Sade w sprawie demokracji przyjemności” ogłoszonego w czasach libertarianizmu i deklaracji Rewolucji Francuskiej w sprawie uniwersalnych praw człowieka, artykuł ten opisuje jak sadomasochizm pojawił się ponownie we współczesnej kulturze popularnej (Grupa Bloomsbury, punk) dostarczając sposobów zgłębiania wolności osobistej i jej granic. Z tej perspektywy Pięćdziesiąt twarzy Greya jest krokiem wstecz ponieważ powiela on tradycyjne stereotypy dotyczące płci i seksualności. Powieść dzieli seks na lepszy i gorszy, stygmatyzuje homoseksualizm, przedstawia BDSM jako chorobę, którą „tylko miłość może uleczyć” i umacnia dziewiętnastowieczne definicje męskości i kobiecości. Pod pozorem promowania perwersyjnego seksu, książka wprowadza nową taksonomię, której prawami rządzi rynek.

The author presents poetry by Kamila Janiak in the context of avant-guard pop-culture. She deals mainly with punk and cyber-punk motifs of this poetry, which alow to understand them as a feminist, post-human and anty-capitalist project. Underground music scene in SilesiaUpper Silesia is usually associated with the historical land situated in southern Poland with highly developed industry, mainly mines and steelworks. The inhabitants of Upper Silesia are perceived as conservatist. In spite of that, it is Upper Silesia, precisely Gliwice, where the most vigorous underground music scene in communist Poland was created at the beginning of the 1980s. The Gliwice Alternative Scene was focused around student clubs in Gliwice with „Gwarek” as the representative one. In this article we will show the artistic legacy of chosen musical bands from GAS such as Smierc Kliniczna, R.A.P., Absurd, Processs, Brzytwa Ojca. In particular we will analyze the lyrics and quote interviews with the musicians from the before mentioned bands. We will therefore demonstrate that the Gliwice Alternative Scene was not only an alternative to the blues scene, which was very popular in Upper Silesia, but also through the fusion of punk, reggae and new wave as well as unconventional, radical lyrics, it stood out among other bands which created the Polish underground musical scene of the 1980s. In terms of its social impact, it was a “niche within a niche”. Finally, it is worth noting that the Gliwice Alternative Scene was beyond censorship and the dominant communist discourse. Underground po ŚląskuGliwicka Alternatywna Scena (GAS) była jednym z najprężniej rozwijających się środowisk alternatywnego rocka w Polsce lat 80. Organizowała się od początku tamtej dekady w gliwickich klubach studenckich, z których najbardziej emblematycznym miejscem okazał się „Gwarek”. Najważniejszymi zespołami GAS były: Śmierć Kliniczna, R.A.P., Absurd, Processs, Brzytwa Ojca. W tekście skupiamy się w szczególności na analizie tekstów piosenek wymienionych zespołów oraz treści wywiadów narracyjnych, prasowych, radiowych przeprowadzonych z muzykami współtworzącymi GAS. Wynika z nich, że opisywane przez nas zjawisko dobrze oddawało ducha całej polskiej alternatywy ostatniej dekady PRL, jak i pozostawało fenomenem specyficznym w skali regionalnej.

The aim of the article is to present and attempt to classify documentary films about the Jarocin music festival. The films are conventionally divided into those shot during the 1980s editions and those created in our century, which describe them festival in retrospect. By analyzing selected works, the author draws attention to whether and how the approach to the subject and the form of the film change over the years.

The goal of this article is to present the main theoretical and methodological assumptions of an international research project on the educational contexts of cultural resistance in Poland and Portugal. In this article, we will first analyse, in a resumed way, the various lines of thought related to cultural resistance, radical democracy critical pedagogy; then we will present an example of a critical pedagogy, the punk pedagogy, in order to demonstrate that the reality we describe is not only present at the abstract level; then, and finally, we proceed with the research methodology that we intend to trigger in order to analyse the educational contexts of cultural resistance in Portugal and Poland. In this article we are talking about two countries with very dissonant stories. Even today, in the context of membership of the European Union, the course of both countries seems to diverge. However, we argue that the comparison between these two distant and different countries may open new perspectives on the contexts of cultural resistance and critical pedagogy. Like the example of punk, these practices of cultural resistance can serve as a way to empower active civic and political participation, going beyond the simple act of voting every four years and promoting a radical democracy.

The paper is an analysis of the “Siksa” duet’s work, The Patriotism of Tomorrow (2018) deeply rooted in a contemporary feministic punk culture. The author looks at the work from a genre studies perspective, finding a genological novum (basing on E. Balcerzan’s theory of “multimedia genology”). The analysis of the work (a verbal-musical collage), consists of the search for its genological place in contemporary engaged culture. The author demonstrates that the uniqueness of its genre frames is not wide enough to be described as “antigenre” or “authorial genre”, the terms introduced by Polish scientists; he suggests that the term “post-genre” ought to be used instead.
