Opis:
Forging hammers are machines whose operation causes negative effects both at the place of their foundation (the soil settlement) and in their surroundings (e.g., vibrations propagating to the other devices, noise, etc.). Knowledge of the parameters characterizing the time history of the force that arises as a result of impact of a ram on a shaped material is of fundamental importance for the correct analysis of both the structure of the hammer and its impact on the surroundings. In the paper, the effect of the shape and duration of a pulse load on the dynamic response of a hammer-foundation forging system was assessed. An analytical method of description of the forces that arise as a result of impact of the ram on the forged material, using different forms of pulses was presented. The forces defined in this way as loads in a mathematical model of three degrees of freedom forging system were used. The equations of motion derived from d'Alembert's principle were solved numerically in the Matlab program. The analyses for eight forms of the pulse loads with the same pulse sizes but different durations were performed. The results in the graphs were presented. It was found, among other things, that a greater impact on the maximum displacement, velocity and acceleration of each component of the hammer-foundation system as well as on the maximum forces transmitted to the soil has the duration of a pulse than its shape.

Opis:
High strain rate experimental tests are essential in a development process of materials under strongly dynamic conditions. For such a dynamic loading the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) has been widely used to investigate dynamic behaviour of various materials. It was found that for different materials various shapes of a generated wave are desired. This paper presents a parametric study of Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar in order to find striker’s design variables, which influence the pulse peak shape in the incident bar. With experimental data given it was possible to verify the developed numerical model, which was used for presented investigations. Dynamic numerical simulations were performed using explicit LS-Dyna code with a quasi-optimization process carried out using LS-Opt software in order to find striker’s design variables, which influence the pulse peak shape.

Opis:
The increasing importance of HVDC transmission systems requires the development and evaluation of suitable basic approaches regarding the partial discharge diagnosis. Although diverse promising approaches are identified, recent research is focused on standard atmospheric conditions. Due to the fact that this is just partly consistent to real operating conditions, additional research is required. Focusing on the time domain analysis of corona discharges, occurring under positive DC voltage stress in air, a measurement method for investigating the influence of varying atmospheric quantities is presented. Measurements are carried out for five different relative humidity levels in the range of 20 % to 95 % and for four different temperature levels in the range of 20°C to 65°C. As characterizing pulse shape parameters, the rise time, the pulse width and the fall time are determined as well as the apparent charge. The gained values are compared to each other and reconciled with physical processes.

Opis:
The partial discharge diagnosis is an established instrument for the condition assessment of high voltage insulations and equipment. Under AC voltage stress the phase resolved pattern is of great significance in order to become aware of the type of fault. As a result of the inapplicability for DC voltage stress, approaches for alternative interpretation techniques such as the time domain analysis of partial discharges were identified in recent investigations. In these different types of fault are taken into account as well as different insulating media. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether an analysis of the pulse shape is also applicable for the defect identification under AC voltage stress. By focussing on gaseous insulating media, contact noise and surface discharges are emulated in ambient air, whereas corona discharges are emulated in ambient air and oxygen. A method for analysing discharges, occurring in the negative and the positive half-wave of the test voltage, is proposed and discussed.

In this work, a spectrometric method is described to obtain a clear β energy spectrum of radiocarbon (14C). The spectrometer is simple and uses a pulse shape discrimination timing technique with a Si semiconductor detector. The experimental result showed that the method in the present work was successful for obtaining the clear beta energy spectrum.

Opis:
In this study, after the pulse shape calibration of a liquid scintillation counting (LSC) spectrometer (Quantulus 1220), the efficiency was determined depending on sample quenching parameters. Then, gross alpha and beta activities in two spiked water samples obtained from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were used for the validation of the ASTM D7283-06 method, which is a standard test method for alpha and beta activity in water by LSC. Later, the drinking water samples (35 tap water and 9 bottled water) obtained from different districts of Ankara, Turkey, were measured. The maximum gross alpha activities are measured to be 0.08 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.13 Bq/L for bottled waters, whereas the maximum gross beta activities are found to be 0.18 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.16 Bq/L for bottled waters. These results indicate that these drinking water samples are below the required limits, which are 0.1 Bq/L for alpha emitting radionuclides and 1 Bq/L for beta emitting radionuclides. As a result, gross alpha and beta activities in drinking water of Ankara were determined accurately by this validated LSC method. It is also worth noting that LSC is a rapid and accurate method for the determination of gross alpha and beta activities without requiring a tedious sample preparation.

Opis:
The potential of two Kohonen artificial neural networks (ANNs) - linear vector quantisation (LVQ) and the self organising map (SOM) - is explored for pulse shape discrimination (PSD), i.e. for distinguishing between neutrons (n’s) and gamma rays (’s). The effect that (a) the energy level, and (b) the relative size of the training and test sets, have on identification accuracy is also evaluated on the given PSD dataset. The two Kohonen ANNs demonstrate complementary discrimination ability on the training and test sets: while the LVQ is consistently more accurate on classifying the training set, the SOM exhibits higher n/ identification rates when classifying new patterns regardless of the proportion of training and test set patterns at the different energy levels; the average time for decision making equals ˜100 μs in the case of the LVQ and ˜450 μs in the case of the SOM.
