Polish-language globes are didactic aids, but also valuable cartographic monuments and documents of the Polish language. They have been manufactured since the mid-19th century, initially in Bavaria’s Nuremberg and in Prague in the Czech Republic, and since the 1920s in our country. The production of globes is multi-stage and can be financed partially or entirely by sponsors and patrons. In addition to the products of the company C. Abel-Klinger Kunsthandlung, the first copies were financed by patriot booksellers: Jabłoński, Milikowski, Idzik and Hoesick. After the First World War, copies were financed by publishing companies: Zakłady Główczewskiego, Pomoc Szkolna, Nasz Sklep–Urania, Wydawnictwo Polskie, publishing companies from Katowice, and the mysterious Deutsher Verlag publishing house based in Warsaw and Poznań. Changes in printing technology significantly reduced their price, demand for them by schools and children and young people popularised them as teaching aids. Companies financing and popularising these Polish-language publications played an important role in the publishing of globes. To a large extent, these were companies associated with the production and distribution of teaching materials. In general, all companies discussed can be gathered in three groups: booksellers financing or co-financing the publication of Polish-language globes; publishers responsible for financing and publishing globes; publishers responsible for making maps.

Całość opatrzona jest bogatym aparatem komentarzy i przypisów.
Book Review of: Witold Lutosławski. Correspondence with his Western Publishers and Managers. 1966–1994, ed. Zbigniew Skowron, vol. 1–2, Kraków 2018. The reviewed publication is an edition of nearly a thousand letters written by Witold Lutosławski and people associated with publishing houses involved in both editing the composer's work and organizing his artistic undertakings (conducting activities, lectures and public appearances). Letters that can be described as 'business' correspondence, kept, like most of the composer's legacy, in the Paul Sacher Archive in Basel (Sammlung Lutosławski), originated from 1966–94. The book is equipped with a rich apparatus of comments and footnotes.

Los estudios de recepción de la literatura española en lenguas extranjeras son numerosos, pero aún insuficientes, ante el gran número de lenguas y el amplio periodo cronológico que es posible analizar. En esta contribución analizamos la recepción de la literatura española contemporánea en Polonia a través de los programas de ayuda a la traducción ofrecidos por el Ministerio de Cultura de España. Estos programas, convocados anualmente, permiten conocer en buena medida cuáles son los autores españoles más solicitados por las editoriales extranjeras, lo que ahonda en nuestro conocimiento comercial de las tendencias editoriales y en el establecimiento de un posible canon de la literatura española contemporánea. Nuestro estudio considera el periodo más reciente, el comprendido entre los años 2006-2016, y trata de responder a preguntas como cuáles son esos autores y títulos más traducidos, qué géneros predominan y qué editoriales polacas tienen mayor interés en la publicación de la literatura española contemporánea.
Studies on reception of Spanish literature into foreign languages are increasing but are still insufficient because of the large number of languages and the long chronological period to be analyzed. This paper proposes an approach to the reception of contemporary Spanish literature in Poland through the translation grants offered by the Spanish government. These grants allow us to know which are the most in-demand Spanish authors by foreign publishers, and how the publishing trends are changing the canon of contemporary Spanish literature. Our study considers the period between 2006-2016 and tries to answer questions such as which are the most translated Spanish authors and titles, which genres predominate and which Polish publishers have the greatest interest in the publication of contemporary Spanish literature.

W artykule przedstawiono wprowadzenie do tematyki sesji roboczej „Polskie czasopisma naukowe z dyscyplin: «historia i filozofia nauki» oraz «naukoznawstwo» – aktualne wyzwania”, zorganizowanej przez Komisję Historii Nauki PAU w Krakowie w dniu 25 czerwca 2019 r., wraz z konkretnymi propozycjami rozwiązań organizacyjno-redakcyjnych dla czasopism i wydawnictw oraz rozwiązań legislacyjnych dotyczących zasad ewaluacji czasopism.

The article discusses the publishing activities of Roy Publishers in New York from 1940 to the 1960s, particularly its impact on popularizing Polish literature and information about Poland in the U.S. The publishing house continued the tradition of the former house, named “Rój”, which was active during 1924-1940 in Warsaw and established by Melchior Wańkowicz, then managed together with Marian Kister. The article is based on the materials from the publishing house archive, now held at Stanford University Libraries, a valuable research source on the émigré cultural heritage of the 2nd Republic of Poland.

Cel: Celem artykułu jest ukazanie ograniczania i stopniowej likwidacji wydawnictw oraz prasy katolickiej w Polsce po drugiej wojnie światowej. Metody: W publikacji zastosowano metody właściwe dla historii wychowania i historii prasy. Wyniki: Realizacja zadania likwidacji wydawnictw oraz prasy katolickiej w Polsce wynikała z komunistycznych założeń ideologicznych niesuwerennego państwa polskiego, znajdującego się pod silnym wpływem Związku Sowieckiego, zmierzających do zlaicyzowania polskiego społeczeństwa, a zwłaszcza jego młodego pokolenia. W przeciągu kilku powojennych lat doprowadzono do zamknięcia zdecydowanej większości katolickich wydawnictw, drastycznego zmniejszenia liczby książek i tytułów czasopism. Nakłady istniejącej jeszcze prasy i wydawanych książek były niewielkie i stały w wyraźnym kontraście z szybko rosnącymi publikacjami o charakterze propagandowym i marksistowskim, popieranymi przez władzę. Wnioski: Artykuł oparty został o nieznane źródła archiwalne. Podstawowy wniosek z tego artykuł można sprowadzić do konstatacji, że podjęty temat jest bardzo ważny społecznie, obszerny i wymaga dalszych, dogłębnych badań.
Aim: The aim of this article is to present restrictions on, and the gradual closing down of, publishing houses and Catholic press in Poland after the Second World War. Methods: The methods applied in the publication were appropriate for the history of education and the history of the press. Results: The accomplishing of this task resulted from the communist ideological assumptions of the non-sovereign Polish state, which found itself under the strong influence of the Soviet Union. According to those assumptions, Polish society, especially its young generation, was to be secularized. Within a few post-war years, the vast majority of Catholic publishing houses was closed down and the number of books and magazine titles was dramatically reduced. The circulation of the still existing press and published books was small and clearly contrasted with the fast growing propaganda and Marxist publications which were supported by the authorities. Conclusions: The article is based on previously unknown archival sources. The subject needs further in-depth research. The basic conclusion that can be drawn from the article is that the topic, which has been tackled, is very important, vast and requires further and thorough research.

Literature for young readers in Eduard Trewendt’s publishing house in Breslau (1845–1903). Research-historic essay The article presents children and youth literature review which was published in the second half of 19th century in German publishing house of Eduard Trewendt in Breslau, especially in Trewendt‘s Jugendbibliothek series. The series consisted of 132 titles, was a great commercial success and secured for the publishing house monopoly position in Silesia. The books for children and youth offered to the readers entertainment, knowledge, shape personalities and moral values system. The authors included famous German writers e. g.: Franz Hoffmann, Karl Müller and Hedwig Prohl who wrote stories for girls. Trewendt also published German translations of well-read foreign authors e. g. Charles Dickens series. The publishing house also offered wide range of course books and other products for school children to facilitate learning process. Some of them reached all German speakers and were renewed many times.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyse the content of websites of selected publishers offering a book addressed to young readers in terms of the presence of a literary text on them. It has been decided to use netnography tools and a functional method to identify the criteria for selecting text extracts from websites; to describe the position of these extracts among the other elements of the website interface; to indicate the extract functions. The websites of the following publishing houses with the highest profits on the sale of books, including those for children and youth in 2013–2015, have been selected for the study: Wydawnictwo Olesiejuk, Wydawnictwo AMEET , Grupa Wydawnicza Foksal, Prószyński Media, Grupa Publicat, Nasza Księgarnia, Wydawnictwo Czarna Owca.
Celem artykułu jest analiza zawartości stron internetowych wybranych wydawnictw mających w swojej ofercie książkę adresowaną do młodego odbiorcy pod kątem obecności na nich tekstu literackiego. Postanowiono zastosować narzędzia netnografii oraz metodę funkcjonalną, aby: zidentyfikować kryteria doboru fragmentów tekstów umieszczanych na stronach internetowych, opisać miejsce tych fragmentów wśród innych elementów interfejsu strony, wskazać funkcje, jakie owe fragmenty pełnią. Do badań wybrano strony następujących wydawnictw osiągających w latach 2013–2015 najwyższe zyski ze sprzedaży książek, w tym tych dla dzieci i młodzieży: Wydawnictwo Olesiejuk, Wydawnictwo AMEET, Grupa Wydawnicza Foksal, Prószyński Media, Grupa Publicat, Nasza Księgarnia, Wydawnictwo Czarna Owca.

In communist countries censorship offices were the final link in the entire process of control of a given literary text before its publication. The Polish Central Office for the Control of Press, Publications and Performances of the ideological and political control of the manuscripts submitted. The [formulation of the] publication schedule and monitoring its implementation was done by institutions answerable to the Ministry of Culture and Art. In the GDR right from the start attempts were made to concentrate the two forms of control in one institution, which ultimately took place in 1963 after the establishment of the Central Board of Publishing Houses and Book Trade (Hauptverwaltung Verlage und Buchhandel). This institution held logistical and economic control of publishing houses, supervising from day one the publication schedules and monitoring the books prepared for issue as to their ideological and political content. It also made the final decision as to whether given books can come out and on what conditions, or whether their publication should be prevented.

Este trabajo hace una primera aproximación a los programas de ayuda a la traducción de obras españolas e hispanoamericanas en lenguas extranjeras convocados por el Ministerio de Cultura. A través de los datos anuales de estos programas es posible extraer un balance objetivo de cuáles son los autores más traducidos y cuáles las editoriales más beneficiadas por estas subvenciones. Así, a modo de ejemplo, en este artículo se considera la recepción de las obras de Roberto Bolaño y Antonio Gamoneda a través de las concesiones de ayudas para la traducción. Este estudio considera el periodo comprendido entre los años 2006 y 2011, un trabajo posterior abarcará el periodo 2012-2016; entre ambos se hará una visión panorámica de los cambios en las tendencias en la literatura escrita en español según la demanda de las editoriales que solicitan estas ayudas.

Good editor is invaluable for the writer – particularly when the author is a controversial celebrity used to living like a lord and not all of his books are really noteworthy. Antoni Ferdynand Ossendowski also was looking for wealthy backer. Tactics that he practiced seems to be surprising even today. He gave more than one title to some of his novels, divided some books into parts, re-used names and motives and prepared books to order. He did not have anything against writing for owner of chocolate factory. In this article I characterize different methods of printing and distributing even not very good books. I also analyze editor’s influence on the content and artwork of the publication.
Dobry wydawca jest dla literata bezcenny. Zwłaszcza jeśli sam pisarz to postać kontrowersyjna, przywykła do życia na wysokiej stopie, a jego powieści prezentują bardzo nierówny poziom. Poszukiwania wydawcy były stałym elementem życia Antoniego Ferdynanda Ossendowskiego. Pisarz nieustannie zabiegał o zainteresowanie zamożnych mecenasów. Troska o kwestie finansowe sprawiła zaś, że stosował zaskakujące nawet dzisiaj praktyki. Nie przeszkadzało mu wydawanie jednej powieści pod kilkoma tytułami, dzielenie książki na części i dystrybucja każdej z nich osobno (pod oddzielnym tytułem), powracanie do raz wykorzystanych motywów czy pisanie na zamówienie… fabrykanta czekolady. W artykule analizuję różne taktyki stosowane przez literata okresu międzywojennego pozwalające na zwiększanie nakładów, szybkie wznawianie i wydawanie drukiem nawet powieści nieszczególnie godnych uwagi. Omawiam, jaki wpływ na zawartość książki ma dobór wydawcy oraz przyglądam się szacie graficznej jego publikacji.

Opis:
Przez wieki Polskę z Włochami, a zwłaszcza z Rzymem, łączyły bardzo ożywione kontakty. Tutaj już w XVI w. powstawały takie ośrodki jak kościół polski, a przy nim – najstarsza biblioteka polska poza granicami kraju, czy hospicjum dla pielgrzymów. Na ten czas datuje się także pierwsze próby stworzenia domu, w którym mogłaby zatrzymywać się młodzież przybywająca na studia. Archiwa włoskie, szczególnie watykańskie, należą do najbogatszych w polonika. Korzystali z nich od dawna badacze z Polski. Celem niniejszej próby przybliżenia polskiego dziedzictwa piśmienniczego jest przede wszystkim prezentacja wysiłków ośrodków polonijnych w zakresie gromadzenia i udostępniania polskich zbiorów bibliotecznych oraz dokumentacji archiwalnej. Omówiono dość bogatą, chociaż mało znaną działalność wydawniczą, bibliograficzną, organizowanie różnych akcji i imprez oraz współpracę z instytucjami włoskimi, a także z licznymi w Rzymie ośrodkami obcych państw.
Throughout the centuries Poland and Italy (specifically Rome) were strongly tied. Here, in Italy in the 16th Century were established such institutions as Polish church with affiliated the oldest Polish library abroad. Here there were established hospitals for pilgrims and provided first attempts of setting centres for the youth arriving to Italy for their studies. Italian archives (specifically in Vatican) belong to the ones which are the richest among Polish diaspora collections. It has been long time since Polish researchers have been using them. The paper is an attempt to present Polish written heritage and aims mainly on presenting above all activity of the Polish diaspora institutions in the scope of collecting and distributing Polish library collections and archival documentation. There is discussed relatively rich, however hardly known publishing, bibliographic activity, organization of different actions and events and cooperation with Italian institutions as well as with numerous centres run by the other countries in Rome.

One of the most outstanding Polish Jesuit in seventeenth century was the father Kasper Drużbicki. He performed many external activity in the monastic life especially as superior of many monasteries and responsible for entire province - though his deep ascetic life had never been compromised. He was a prolific writer, and his works involved the Christian asceticism, exercises of clergymen, liturgies, biographistic and the devotion to the Heart of God which he was precursor. His writings in Latin were published in many domestic and foreign Jesuit centers and received the double collective edition in „the Opera omnia”. Some were translated on foreign languages. His writings written in Latin were many times given in different Jesuit centres domestic and foreign and received the double collective edition in „the Opera omnia”.
