    The text is focused on two relatively young yet rapidly developing disciplines: psychology of music and music therapy. The goal of the article was to outline the territories of both disciplines and consider relationships between them. The text includes characteristics, presented through clarification of the subjects of both areas, attempt to place them in the general classification of sciences and considerations regarding the methodology. It also indicates important aspect of artistic component, present especially in practical music therapy, and reaching beyond scientific inquiry. The author notices difficulties of integrating activities utilizing arts with systematic, research-oriented perspective. She shows relationships between disciplines, paying attention to the significant differences, but also complementary values. She concludes that despite of being separate, psychology of music and music therapy have common grounds.

    The psychology of music has a long tradition and continues to develop both in Poland and abroad. The current issue of Roczniki Psychologiczne [Annals of Psychology] is devoted to topics related to the scientific study of music, addressed by Polish scholars from different research units. In the current introductory article we aim to describe the context in which the psychological study of music develops. Assuming that the psychology of music is a science dealing relationships between music and human listeners, performers, or composers, we explain the meaning of that notion, presenting the characteristics of such relations. We also describe the beginnings and development of the psychology of music in Poland and abroad, introducing the main goals of this multidisciplinary and integrative science. Finally, we present the contents of the current issue of Roczniki Psychologiczne [Annals of Psychology].

    Opis:
    Psychology of music, a science of the relations between humans and sound structures, is continuously developing. Given the growing number of publications in this domain, reviews of the literature are of value, as they integrate knowledge, informing and guiding future research endeavors. This article presents the results of a 47-year (1973–2019) content analysis of research on creating, practicing, and responding to music featured in The Psychology of Music journal. The purpose of our study was to identify and describe the themes in research on creating, practicing, and responding to music, indicating which study topics were the most often present in publications. We identified 17 categories of research topics and found that the largest number of publications dealt with predictors of music creating, self-regulated practice, or affective responses to music. Suggestions for developing and bolstering research and practice are provided.

    Jednym z głównych celów artykułu jest prezentacja na tle klasycznego modelu oczekiwania-wartości założeń modelu oczekiwania-wartości w zakresie wyboru dziedzin osiągnięć (expectancy-value model of achievement-related choices) opracowanego przez zespół J. S. Eccles (1983, 2007). Autorka opisuje narzędzie do pomiaru psychologiczno-społecznych składowych modelu opracowane przez zespół badawczy Eccles. Dokonuje przeglądu badań weryfikujących założenia modelu w odniesieniu do uczenia się gry na instrumencie muzycznym. Wskazuje na praktyczne implikacje modelu dla psychologii muzyki i edukacji muzycznej.
    One of the main aims of the paper is to present the Expectancy-Value Model of Achievement-Related Choices developed by Eccles’ research team (1983, 2007) against the classical expectancy-value model. The author describes an inventory developed by Eccles’ research team to measure psychological and social components of the model. She makes a review of recent papers, which verify the assumptions of the model in relation to learning to play a musical instrument. She indicates the practical implications of the model for psychology of music and music education.

    The main aim of this article is to represent speculations on the topic of therapy conducted through art, in general, and music therapy based on the concept of existential psychology, in particular. Analysis of the literature sources related to the topic and personal observations and experiences allow us to perceive the meaningful and therapeutic role of music in meeting the needs of self-realization and finding purpose in life. The represented material bears the main objectives of raising awareness about the above-mentioned topic and suggesting the use of the observed existential tenets in treating older people with music therapy.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba przedstawienia rozważań na temat terapii przez sztukę, a mianowicie muzykoterapii w oparciu o koncepcję psychologii egzystencjalnej. Analiza literatury przedmiotu oraz osobiste obserwacje i doświadczenia pozwalają dostrzec znaczącą, terapeutyczną rolę muzyki w zaspokajaniu potrzeb związanych z samorealizacją oraz sensem życia. Przedstawiony materiał ma za zadanie wzbudzić zainteresowanie powyższą problematyką oraz przedstawić propozycję zastosowania wybranych założeń egzystencjalnych w zajęciach muzykoterapeutycznych z osobami w podeszłym wieku.
