Opis:
Among the features marking a mystical experience facilitated by certain kind of psychedelic substances researchers singled out the so-called noetic quality, which indicates that mystical experiences can have a cognitive significance. The main goal of my article is then to address the question, whether this cognitive capacity of mystical experience has only a subjective/psychological value, or it should be rather treated as a legitimate kind of cognition. The philosophical aspect of this issue enters the domain of ontology and epistemology, since it concerns the question, whether an object of any cognitive experience has to belong to the physical reality, or a proper cognition can be realized in the reality of symbols. In order to deal with these questions I will refer to the philosophy of H.-G. Gadamer. Even though Gadamer did not investigate altered states of consciousness, I believe his hermeneutics can support a hypothesis that altered states of consciousness provide recognition of reality of symbols.

Opis:
Drug-plasma protein interaction is a critical concern in monitoring drug circulation and drug-drug interactions. The present study aimed to investigate the interaction of psychedelic drugs such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), dimethyltryptamine (DMT), 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI), psilocybin, psilocin, and mescaline with human serum albumin (HSA). The 3D structures of LSD, DMT, DOI, psilocybin, psilocin, mescaline, and albumin were obtained from the structural databases (www.rcsb.org, https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound). The structures were then prepared for molecular docking analysis by Autodock Vina software. Ultimately, the binding energies between docked HSA and psychedelic drugs were calculated, and their interactions were predicted. It was found that the psychedelic drugs can interact with HSA in the active site and the best minimum binding energies of -7.6 kcal/mol and -6.5 kcal/mol were shown by LSD and psilocybin, respectively. Our results indicated that all psychedelic drugs tested could interact with HSA at subdomains IA and IB. The structural properties of the drugs affect their interaction sites and binding energies. It was concluded that albumin, as the most abundant protein of the serum, could act as the biodistributor of psychedelic drugs.

Opis:
New psychoactive substances (NPS) sometimes referred to as “legal highs” or “designer drugs” are psychotropic materials that mimic the effects of other banned illicit drugs but are not always controlled under drug legislation. NPS are typically marketed as “not for human consumption” and are instead labelled and sold as research chemicals in Poland to avoid legislative controls. One of the main NPS classes are hallucinogens. The present paper aims at providing an overview of two groups of psychedelic drugs – lysergamides and tryptamines, and determining their legislation status in Poland. Psychodysleptics have always been of interest to people who want to experiment with their senses and boundaries. They may show beneficial effects which, from a medical point of view indicate the possibility of using them in therapies. NPS that have been described in this paper: 1-Propionyl-d-lysergic acid diethylamide (1P-LSD), 6-Allyl-6-nor-lysergic acid diethylamide (AL-LAD), 6-Ethyl-6-nor-lysergic acid diethylamide (ETH-LAD), 4-hydroxy-N-methyl-N-ethyltryptamine (4-HO-MET), 5-methoxy-N,N-diallyltryptamine (5-MeO-DALT).

Opis:
This short essay wants to look at beat literature as a medium that has re-introduced in popular feelings the possibility to change the world, transforming its social rules by using new technologies as instruments for emancipation. Stating this, the essay links the beat movement to hipster’s hopes of the beginning of the XX century, with the need to reflect on the meaning of two WW as barriers to people’s emancipation. From the non-academic side of the perspective, the essay indicates some special sources, trying to demonstrate how beat literature has shaped new meanings to words like “occult”, “magic”, linking them with other words like “awareness” and “emancipation”. Doing this, a tribute is given to the historical role played by the magazine “International Times” as living witness of the years when beat literature was germinating into the generational protest. The conclusions are oriented towards the meaning in the present for a beat attitude to (social) life, with the new awareness of the way indicated by Allen Ginzberg about the unuseful dimension of drugs as instruments to get the vision, and the need to substitute them with natural tools to be able to extract them from unconscious through yoga and meditation systems. This may help to create a new kind of people, involved in a cosmopolitan interpretation of life, able to interconnect by the new information and communication technologies, ready to create a new social intellect. Of course, we do not pretend to present this work of network as a strong link, rather, it seems to be a weak tie. Nevertheless, this weak tie in sociology is a concept used to indicate a relationship that is not as strong as quotidian family or professional relationships. The strength of weak ties theory affirms that weak ties provide access to new audiences where you could find opportunities or contrary opinions that would make ideas stronger, looking at how a person’s network can contribute to their success. Ideas are like germs and they don’t diffuse through populations of people at random, instead, they make their way through networks – that is the kind of relationships we may have with people, creating connections with others. The changes in communication system (Internet, on the immaterial side, the mobility system on the physical side) are creating new opportunities to create network both on the immaterial and on the physical side. Conference driven by intellectual affinities and wishes to know better each others culture seems to generate the conditions of a new kind of people, creating cosmopolitan attitude as something that can be shared by an increasing number of people.

Opis:
There has been a debate regarding substances that cause altered states of consciousness (especially those of a psychedelic nature) that have been intrinsically linked to man since the dawn of time. The question of the beginning of the crystallization of human consciousness intrigues today’s researchers. American writer and ethnobotanist Terence McKenna tangled with such ideas, indeed one of his thoughts contributes to many controversial opinions and theories presented in this work. The stoned ape theory considers psilocybin, the active substance of entheogenic mushrooms, as an element that played an important role in the process of human evolution and contributed to the acceleration of human consciousness. The author of a title theory believes that psychoactive mushrooms, which might have been components of our ancestors’ diet, could also contributed to the development of language and religion. In this paper, an attempt will be made to subject the title theory to criticism with particular discussion of archaeological evidence.

Opis:
Mark Fisher wrote „the task of repoliticizing mental illness is an urgent one if the left wants to challenge capitalist realism.” This paper attempts to develop this thought and show how the repoliticization of issues defined as mental illnesses that could have an emancipatory potential and undermine capitalist realism could look like and how it could be related to the contemporary phenomenon of „psychedelic renaissance”. This repoliticization could constitute the first step towards acid communism – a step that would enable a comprehensive formulation of the project, the imagining of both acid communism itself as well as the road towards it. Even though psychedelics could provide an impulse for the change of the dominant psychiatric paradigm and the reorganization of mental health services, the process of the interception of these substances by the alienating and commodificating orders of psychiatry and capitalism can already be observed, so that both of the intertwined and mutually supporting orders can in fact be strengthened. From this perspective the institution of psychiatry becomes a key element preserving the status quo, which makes the imagining of the end of capitalism impossible. Politicization of mental health, that could question capitalist realism, needs to be connected with the deconstruction of the ideology of psychiatry.

Opis:
This article refers to use of the red fly agarics (Amanita muscaria) by the siberian Koryak people living in the Kamchatka Peninsula. Linguistic and archeological evidence indicates a very early use of toadstools in Siberia. Presence of Amanita muscaria in myths and its direct link to Koryak supreme deity proves that those mushrooms had in the past important function in the local shamanism. Their presence in folk medicine has also been observed today. Despite the still alive beliefs associated with red toadstools, their consumption is nowadays difficult to consider as ritual behavior in the strict sense. It seems that the abandonment of toadstool consumption is one of the signals of a much larger phenomenon, which is the loss of old shamanistic Koryak traditions, beliefs and practices. Through a possible reconstruction of the former meaning that Amanita muscaria had among Koryaks and by looking at modern opinion on these mushrooms, an attempt was made to capture and compare the past and present role of toadstools in this community. The collected materials suggest that the significance of their use is not as important today as it used to be – however, there are people who still use these mushrooms. The available literature does not allow for a detailed presentation of the contemporary conceptualization of Koryak use of the red fly agarics based on the examination of the specific cases of intoxication. This is an issue that requiers further research and can be explored by collecting interviews and recording changes and constans in the behavior and beliefs of the Siberian people.
