Opis:
We examined growth of oaks after cleaning carried out in a 11−year−old stand in Kolumna Forest District (central Poland). The purpose of the treatment was to remove naturally regenerated species mainly birch. Four different cleaning variants were applied. They differed in time of application and height of unwanted trees i.e. spring cleaning at ground level in every second oak row (W1) or over the entire surface (W2), breaking at a height of 1 m in spring (W3) or in summer (W4) and control (K) where trees were not removed. We analyzed height and its increment, dbh and its increment as well as slenderness, i.e. h:d ratio, in 4−year−long period after treatment. The study reviled that the cleaning, regardless of the applied method, significantly improved oak growth, while lack of cleaning led to increased competition of birch. The pressure from the other species firstly reduced diameter increment and later the height increment (tab.). As a result, the h:d ratio of oaks increased. The 4−year height and dbh increment were similar in all the applied treatments but in the last year of study the dbh increment in variants W2 and W4 was significantly higher than in W1 and W3 due to greater competition of birch in these variants (figs. 1 and 2). Cleaning done on a limited area provides satisfactory growth and stability for young oaks, but it is probable that such a stand needs more frequent intervention than the one from W2 cleaning variant.

In the study the formation of the dbh increment in spruce stands throughout their whole life in the Skrzyczne massif in the Beskidy Zachodnie Mountains has been presented. This increment can be illustrated by means of an exponential function according to the following formula: Zr=exp(a + b·ln(w)+c·ln2(w)), regardless of the altitude above see level at which trees grow. This altitude however has an effect on the value of function parameters.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to quantify 4−year growth and increment of 11− to 15−year−old, artificially regenerated hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) playing the role of the tending (nursery) species in the oak stand of the same age, after the silvicultural treatments aimed at reducing its competition against the oak. The study included three types of experimental treatments: decapitating of all hornbeam trees (OG), schematic reduction of hornbeam density (R50, removal of every second hornbeam in a row) and control (K, without treatment). The trial stand is located in Rogów (51.827023° N, 19.922315° E) and was established in 2004 on a moderately fertile site. The experiment was carried out in the spring 2013 (9 years after planting). Height and breast height diameter (dbh) of trees were measured every two years. During the study period, the height increment of decapitated trees was significantly larger than in R50 and K variants, while the dbh increment of trees in R50 variant was significantly larger than in K and OG variants. The height increment of hornbeam in R50 and OG variant and the dbh increment in R50 variant were positively correlated with height and diameter of trees before the treatment, while the dbh increment after decapitating was negatively correlated with tree dimensions before treatment. The decapitating treatment reduced the competitive ability of hornbeam more effectively than the schematic thinning removing 50% of hornbeam trees. After 4 years in the first case, oaks were on average 1 m higher than hornbeams, and in the second case, there was an opposite situation. In order to improve the effectiveness of the thinning treatment, a selective cutting should be performed (removal of the largest hornbeams), and in order to slow down the regeneration of hornbeams after decapitating, the treatment should be carried out during the top of the growing season.

Opis:
The study presents the assessment of damage to beech stands using four methods, including that taking into account the radial increment. The condition of stands in 2016, and the growth response of trees to the environmental changes since 1956 are described. The measurements and observations were carried out on 18 sample plots (tab. 1) located in south−western Poland. The mean defoliation accounts for 32.5% ranging from 16.9 to 56.9%, while the average defoliation class value is 1.62 ranging from 0.75 to 2.38. The proportion of trees was found to be the highest (approx. 60%) in class of moderate damage (fig. 1a). The mean value of vitality is 1.17 (ranging from 0.75 to 2.38). The proportion of trees in vitality classes differs significantly from that in defoliation classes. The highest number of trees (approx. 80%) was found to be within damage class of weakened trees (fig. 1b). The assessment of damage to trees based on synthetic damage index (defoliation and vitality combined using formula [1]) is similar to the assessment method based on tree vitality. The mean value is 1.07, ranging from 0.63 to 1.70. The largest proportion of trees (over 80%) was found to be within class 1 (fig. 1c). The index SynZ combines defoliation and vitality, as well as the growth response of trees over the last 15 years according to formula [2]. Its values range from 0.82 to 1.79 with 1.21 on average. The largest proportion of trees (over 70%) was found to be within damage class 1 (fig. 1d). The response of trees to environmental changes is an important indicator of the growth conditions. The proportion of trees with negative growth responses increases from period to period, while the proportion of trees with neutral and positive responses decreases (fig. 2). The analysed beech stands show fairly large differences in the level of the damage. The most likely cause of this situation are droughts occurring in recent growing seasons, especially in 2012. Of the methods deployed to assess damage to beech trees, the morphological−growth one is the most accurate, but the most laborious. Therefore, it is preferable to use a synthetic damage index as both tree defoliation and vitality can also be assessed outside the growing season.

Opis:
Growth and mortality of oak (Quercus robur L.) in young mixed stands with various admixture of hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) in the period of 9−13 years after planting were examined. The trial stand is located in central Poland (51.827023° N, 19.922315° E). It was established in 2004 on a moderately fertile site. Four experimental variants with different participation of oak (O) and hornbeam (H) were established: W1 – an oak monoculture (control variant, 100% O), W2 – a mixed stand consisting of two rows of oak and one row of hornbeam (67% O, 33% H), W3 – a mixed stand consisting of one row of oak and one row of hornbeam (50% O, 50% H), W4 – a mixed stand characterized by a single tree mixture, with three oaks and one hornbeam alternately occurring in each row (75% O, 25% H). During the first two years of the study period the height increments of oak trees were significantly larger in the study variants with hornbeam (the biggest in W3 variant), while during the next two years, the largest values of height increments occurred in the control variant (W1). Through the second part of the study period, the most pronounced, negative effect of hornbeam on the dbh increment of oak trees took place in the W3 variant. During the first nine years after planting the survival rate of oak trees in the variants with hornbeam were similar (82−94%) as in the control variant (85%). However, during the next four years, three times more oaks died in W3 variant (16,5%) than in other variants (5−7%). In general, the results obtained suggest that in order to create mixed oak stands with hornbeam as a nursery species, the share of hornbeam should not exceed 20−25% of all planted trees. The above value appears to be acceptable from the point of view of the negative competitive effects of hornbeam on oak trees during the initial stages of stand development.

Opis:
Silver fir is one of the main tree species of mountain and foothill forests in Poland that in optimal conditions forms pure stands with multi−layer structure. The study objective is to present differences in height and diameter growth rates of firs growing in upper stand layers and in the undergrowth. The research was conducted in 12 fir stands located in the Beskid Niski Mts. (southern Poland). In each stand height and diameter at breast height (dbh) were measured for 25 fir trees in order to develop a height curve. The first canopy layer included trees that were higher than ⅔ Hmax established from the height curve of the tree with the largest dbh. Height and diameter were measured on eight trees selected from the first canopy layer. An increment core was extracted at breast height in order to estimate the tree age. From the third canopy layer, which included trees higher than 2 m with dbh below 7 cm, five trees were selected. After cutting those trees, the length of the last ten branch whorls was measured. Five−year ring width measurements starting from the bark towards the pith were done at the stem cross−sections obtained at breast height. The number of rings was counted on remaining stumps. Height growth rate was defined as the height at the base age of 100 years (eq. 1). For the first canopy layer, the height growth rate was on average 31.8 m, while for the undergrowth it was 12.1 m. There was also large difference between diameter growth rate of the first stand canopy layer (55.7 cm) and undergrowth (18.3 cm). Both differences were significant at p=0.05. These discrepancies could result from low amount of light reaching the forest floor. The correlation between height and diameter growth rates and undergrowth tree age was negative in both cases. Long periods of shading result in smaller number of firs reaching the first canopy layer. Assuming that uneven−aged stand structure is optimal for that species, it should be characterized by a spatial variability (mosaic) of various canopy layers including even−aged patches with sparse canopy closure as well as gaps where fir regeneration will be initiated having favorable growth conditions.

Opis:
The study presents the results of an analysis of the pine tree growth increments (height increment, dbh increment, basal area increment and volume increment) for a 5-year period. The study involved Scots pine trees of Kraft's class 1, 2 and 3 (dominant stand) in stands of different age classes (II, III, V) growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMoew) and fresh coniferous (Boew) forest habitats. The multivariate analysis of variance was performed to assess the statistical significance of age and dominance of trees within a stand on their increment. The dominance position was classified for each tree using Kraft's criteria. The following characteristics were also measured: dbh of the trunk in two directions (N-S and W-E), and crown projection area on the basis of the characteristic tree crown points, projected using of a crown projector, characteristic points in tree crowns (7 to 14 on average). The actual height was determined after trees were felled. The following measurements of the single tree growing space were selected and determined: crown projection area – pk (m2), crown diameter – dk (m), Seebach's growth space number – dk / d1. 3 , crown projection area to basal area ratio –d d k 2 1 3 / 2. , crown deflection coefficient –d h k / , single tree space ppd=pk·h (m3). We assessed the strength of the relationships between tree growth parameters and tree growth space, crown length, relative crown length and slenderness. Both the age and dominance position of trees within the stand affected the growth increments. The strongest correlation among measured traits was between the 5-year volume increment and decreasing slenderness.
