His view of the activities of Solidarity and its underground was due to several fundamental factors: the will to continue the line of action of Primate Wyszyński, a critical evaluation of the activities of political circles opera-ting within Solidarity (above all KOR) and many leaders of the said social move-ment and vision of the Church's activity in the last decade of the PRL.

    Opis:
    Card. Józef Glemp's attitude towards political opposition was critical and sceptical throughout the entire decade of the 1980s. The above mentioned analysis sheds some light on the attitude of the primate to the underground in years 1983- 1984. The author presents the primate's approach to this problem in the period of preparations for the second pilgrimage of John Paul II to the Homeland and the tightening of religious policy by the authorities of the Polish People's Republic, which took place as a result of the evaluation of the effects of the papal visit. It should be emphasised that the detachment from the activity of the opposition also resulted in the primate's critical approach to cooperation of the clergy with the political underground. This article discusses it on the example of the attitude of card.Glemp to priest Popiełuszko. However, the detachment and scepticism towards the opposition did not mean that the primate and the Polish Episcopate did not stand up for the repressed by the authorities. They did it regularly and the chairman of the Polish Episcopal Conference addressed this issue, among others, during the talkswith W. Jaruzelski.

    Opis:
    This paper pictures the circumstances of Primate Glemp`s historic visit to Moscow in 1988 where he obtained the permit to erect a cross at the memorial dedicated to Polish officers killed in the Katyń Forest. Negotiating the permit was Glemp`s extraordinary achievement; the Primate made a special effort that the cross be erected in Katyń on September 1st 1988. These measures constitute the Cardinal`s historical policy: from the start of his primateship he prioritized the questions related to patriotism, national identity and commemorating historical events.

    Kardynał Józef Glemp stał się obiektem zainteresowania ze strony Służby Bezpieczeństwa jeszcze zanim objął urząd prymasa Polski. Zachowana do naszych czasów i przechowywana w zasobie archiwalnym Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej dokumentacja archiwalna pozwala stwierdzić, że ks. Glemp był inwigilowany i zachęcany do nawiązania współpracy z SB. Dla SB jego postać była ważna ze względu na bezpośredni dostęp do kard. Wyszyńskiego. Posiadanie tajnego współpracownika w bezpośrednim otoczeniu ówczesnego prymasa Polski byłoby niewątpliwym sukcesem służb specjalnych PRL. Zamierzenia funkcjonariuszy spełzły jednak na niczym, ze względu na nieugiętą postawę przyszłego prymasa. Ks. Glemp pozostał wiernym synem Kościoła katolickiego i lojalnym współpracownikiem kard. Wyszyńskiego. Z tego powodu jego postawa zasługuje na szacunek. Niniejszy artykuł omawia przechowywane w IPN dokumenty, które obrazują m.in. nieudane próby pozyskania ks. Glempa do współpracy z SB oraz ukazują w ogólnym zarysie jego wizyty na Pomorzu Zachodnim. Pisząc o dokumentacji archiwalnej, autor tekstu ma na myśli nie tylko różnego rodzaju raporty i sprawozdania, lecz również karty ewidencyjne, stanowiące ważną część archiwum IPN. Przykładowe materiały zostały dołączone do prezentowanego artykułu.
    Cardinal Józef Glemp became the object of interest of Security Service even he took the office of the Primate of Poland. The archival documents preserved to our times and stored in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance show that Reverend Glemp was under surveillance and encouraged to cooperate with Security Service. For Security Service, his person was important because of his direct access to Cardinal Wyszyński. Having a secret collaborator in the immediate environment of the then Primate of Poland would be an undoubted success of the special services of the People’s Republic of Poland. However, the intentions of the Security Service officers had failed to nothing due to the inflexible attitude of the future primate. Reverend Glemp remained a faithful sone of the Catholic Church and a loyal associate of Cardinal Wyszyński. For this reason, his attitude deserves respect. This paper discusses the documents stored at the Institute of National Remembrance that illustrate, among other things, unsuccessful attempts to enlist Reverend Glemp for collaboration with Security Service and show in a general outline his visits in Western Pomerania. When writing about the archival documents, the author of this text has in mind not only different types of reports and statements but also record sheets being an important part of the Institute of National Remembrance’s archive. Examples of the scans of these record sheets are also attached to the presented paper.

    Prymas Polski kard. Józef Glemp w duchu swoich wielkich poprzedników – kard. Augusta Hlonda i kard. Stefana Wyszyńskiego – również często odwiedzał Pomorze Zachodnie. Wizyty te miały zarówno charakter służbowy, jak i prywatny, co wynikało z obowiązku bycia metropolitą tych ziem w latach 1981–1992, ale także z troski o tutejszy Kościół. Na terenie archidiecezji szczecińsko-kamieńskiej prymas był aż 16 razy: jako metropolita szczecińsko-kamieński 7 razy i 9 razy, jako kustosz relikwii św. Wojciecha i arcybiskup metropolita warszawski. Wizyty te miały różny wymiar, a związane były miedzy innymi z pielgrzymką papieża Jana Pawła II w Szczecinie, z konferencjami Episkopatu Polski, uroczystościami religijnymi, kulturowymi i odwiedzinami prywatnymi. Wizytował w tym czasie miasta: Szczecin (15 razy), Kamień Pomorski (2 razy), Wolin (1 raz) i Trzebiatów (1 raz). Zachęcał mieszkańców Szczecina i Pomorza, by na „krawędzi naszej Rzeczypospolitej” troszczyli się o wzrost wiary, sprawiedliwości i miłość na wzór Maryi – patronki archidiecezji. W dowód wdzięczności za całość posługi na rzecz Kościoła szczecińsko-kamieńskiego Arcybiskup Metropolita Szczecińsko-Kamieński Andrzej Dzięga uhonorował kard. Józefa Glempa Orderem św. Ottona z Bambergu.
    Cardinal Józef Glemp, the Primate of Poland, in the spirit of his great predecessors – Cardinal August Hlond and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński – also often visited Western Pomerania. These visits were both of business and private nature, which resulted from the obligation of being the Metropolitan Bishop of these lands in the years 1981-1992 as well as his concern for the local Church. He was up to 16 times in the Szczecin-Kamień Diocese: 7 times as the Metropolitan Bishop of the Szczecin-Kamień Diocese and 9 times as the Custodian of the Relics of St. Adalbert and the Metropolitan Archbishop of Warsaw. These visits were of different dimension and were associated with pilgrimages of the Pope John Paul II in Szczecin, Polish Episcopal Conferences, religious ceremonies and cultural events, and private tours. At this time, he visited four cities: Szczecin (15 times), Kamień Pomorski (2 times), Wolin (1 time) and Trzebiatów (1 time). He encouraged the residents of Szczecin and inhabitants of Pomerania to take care of the growth of faith and love at “the brink edge of our Republic” following the way of Mary – a patron of the Archdiocese. In gratitude for the whole service to the Szczecin-Kamień Church, the Szczecin-Kamień Metropolitan Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga honoured Cardinal Józef Glemp with the Grand Order of Saint Otto of Bamberg.
