Opis:
Can one imagine language without proverbs? Do we really need these somewhat clichéd adages like An apple a day keeps a doctor away, Once bitten, twice shy, or Crime doesn’t pay? Are they still influential, or perhaps modern society should give them a new lease of life? This paper aims to reveal the “painful truth” behind traditional proverbs and especially their modified versions. Leading paremiologists (Wolfgang Mieder, Nihada Delibegović Džanic, Anna Litovkina) introduce a number of terms in reference to the latter, and so this study discusses the etymology and the semantic import of such labels as anti-proverbs, twisted proverbs, quasi-proverbs, and pseudo-proverbs. However, its basic aim is to propose a classification of modified proverbs based on a number of examples, such as Man proposes, mother-in-law opposes; A good beginning is half the bottle; Crime pays – be a lawyer; A new broom sweeps clean, but the old one knows the corners, and many others. Finally, based on Ronald Langacker’s conception of the profile-base distinction, deriving from the figure-ground alignment, this paper makes an attempt to prove the necessary link between traditional proverbs and their innovative modifications.

Comparative Phraseology and Paremiology. Selected Studies on Slavic and Romance Languages, by Piotr Sawicki and Jitka Smičeková, is a collection of texts which have previously appeared in the columns of philological periodicals and post-symposium publications in Poland, Spain and the Czech Republic and have since been modified. They constitute the fruits of unceasing international research which was originally launched in 1996. The book is divided into two sections, grouping material relating to Czech and Polish cultural stereotypes and proverbs and the language of Polish politics together in the first part, with the transcreation of proverbs constituting the second part. This innovative work contains a compilation of proverbs and sayings in Polish, Czech and, occasionally, Slovakian; and in Spanish, with some in French. It is enriched by a discussion of the problems relating to the translation and interpretation of certain linguistic phenomena which bear culturally distinctive features. The discussion takes as its examples the writings of František Čelakovský and Jaromír Nohavica, as well as popular Spanish and French sayings. Addressed to expert paremiologists, linguists and students engaged in Slavic, Romance and Iberian studies alike, as well as to anyone interested in matters linguistic, the book now and again departs from the solemn, scholarly form to pursue a discourse more popularised in nature.

The essence of marriage is being widely discussed in the last few decades in many social circles and at many different levels. From the linguistic point of view it is usually characterised on the basis of man’s and woman’s roles in their relationship. The aim of the paper is to present the view of marriage in Polish, Russian and English proverbial phrases. For the purposes of the article about 350 Polish and Russian and about 300 English proverbs have been subjected to cognitive analysis. The research proves that the concept of marriage is roughly universal in all three languages and it presents definitely an androcentric perspective. Wives in proverbs are shown in a very unfavourable light as grouchy, quarrelsome, unfaithful and narrow-minded human beings. Marriage reflected in sayings is usually a burden which diminishes man’s happiness and may even lead to his sickness, fast aging and death. What is more, quite a lot of proverbial phrases in all three languages under study foster violence against women. The concept of marriage presented in proverbs is undoubtedly a reflection of the old way of thinking and the old system of values, but the preliminary research of anti-proverbs, i.e. more modern expressions, proves that it has not undergone any fundamental changes in the language awareness of the Polish, Russian and English native speakers.

This paper aims to investigate the Classical proverbs listed as equivalents to the Catalan proverb L’amic, prova’l primer ans que l’hages menester by Sebastià Farnés in his volume entitled Paremiologia catalana comparada. In this paper, I will establish these Classical proverbs’ sources, consider their authenticity and correspondence with this Catalan proverb, and increase the number of Classical sources, since this Catalan proverb bears witness to its Classical tradition and is related to philosophical and literary passages that can be considered as previous manifestations of this tradition. These Greek and Latin passages are compiled and compared so as to determine the different ways in which the idea included in this Catalan proverb was expressed over time. The conclusion is that the consideration about friendship presented by this proverb is embedded into a long textual/ideological tradition which ultimately refers to the sage Solon, the poet Theognis and the philosopher Theofrast, although there may be connections with the Judeo-Christian tradition as well.

The research on the phenomenon of variantivity in natural languages should comprise all their subsystems. Much attention has been given to phonetic, morphological, lexical, phraseological phenomena, while strictly paremiological ones have been handled to a lesser extent to date. The discussed issue of proverbial innovations in the contemporary Polish language partly fills in the research gap. The factographic material collected in the paper has shown a significant nominative and expressive potential of paremic units fulfilled as a result of numerous modifications of the canonical form of the proverbs used commonly in the Polish language. The said results could be obtained from the paremiological material excerpted with the use of www.google.com search engine in generally available online resources. The criterion adopted for selecting the initial units was the indicator of their frequency based on the socalled paremiological minimum. Afterwards, a secondary modified proverb was compared to its original, which enabled a description of basic innovation mechanisms and identification of the function of a specific registered innovation.

What hides behind such mysterious terms as perverbs, anti-, quasi-, and twisted proverbs? What is their status in modern paremiology? Do bona fide proverbs influence their modified versions or vice versa? Do modified proverbs belong to the proverbial family or are they completely distinct linguistic formations? These are some of the many que, stions concerning perverbs, anti-, quasi- and twisted proverbs, ubiquitous nowadays in newspapers, advertisements, cartoons, or health campaigns. As an illustration, the present paper deals with such sayings as No body is perfect; An onion a day keeps everyone away; Man proposes, mother-in-law opposes; He who laughs last, thinks slowest; Where there is a will, there is a war and others. By providing a glimpse into the goldmine of stylistic and conceptual devices used in their creation, this paper attempts to unveil the mechanisms that contribute to the emergence of the novel meanings found in modified proverbs.

Afrikaans, being very closely related to Dutch, inherited from Dutch not only almost all its vocabulary, but also numerous phraseologisms and proverbs. Then, due to the process of deflection, its morphological system was radically simplified. The very paper, applying a morphology-oriented research perspective, discusses the way in which Afrikaans proverbs differ from Dutch proverbs. The research material of the study is based upon Anton F. Prinsloo’s Spreekwoorde en waar hulle vandaan kom (Kaapstad 2005). This dictionary was chosen to conduct the study because of the fact that it contains a representative collection of proverbs and phraseologisms of the contemporary Afrikaans language. The research under discussion is limited to Afrikaans adages that derive from Dutch. The method of the analysis is a comparative one. Afrikaans proverbs are compared with their Dutch equivalents.

Adopting the model of Cognitive Grammar as proposed and developed by Ronald Langacker (1987, 1991, 2008), the article applies three basic cognitive parameters on the continuum of linguistic structure: analyzability, compositionality, and institutionalization, to an analysis of proverbs and especially to new proverbial modifications. The aim of the study is twofold: first, by proposing a two-dimensional coordinate system, we seek to establish a correlation between analyzability and compositionality. Second, by adding a third parameter on linguistic structure, namely institutionalization, we develop a three-dimensional system which, we believe, can offer a fuller account of the grammar-lexicon continuum.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the way women are presented in Karaim proverbs compared with perceptions of women in proverbs in Turkish and Polish. This analysis is inspired by the fact that proverbs listed in Mardkowicz’s work Karaim. Jego życie i zwyczaje w przysłowiach ludowych (A Karaite. His life and customs in folk proverbs) in the chapter “On woman and child” can be matched with equivalents in collections of Turkish and Polish proverbs. In addition, such a recapitulative juxtaposition enhances the linguistic and cultural image of women, as they are described according to the same criteria. The material gathered here has been divided according to topics covered by expressions. The division into thematic groups is not a forced one but stems from the meaning of particular proverbs. As the proverbs collected by Mardkowicz also concern children, a separate group is devoted to children. The 1st group comprises proverbs dealing with perceptions of women and their characteristics, the 2nd group concerns women as mothers, the 3rd – women as wives, the 4th – the family, the 5th – children.

The aim of this paper is a comprehensive examination of the contemporary collections and dictionaries of Polish proverbs for the young audience. The abundance of such publications in Poland enables the author to have a close look at numerous issues related to paremiography itself as well as the youngest readers. The paper analyses the content of the collections and dictionaries with a special focus on the selection of proverbs, the presentation of their semantics and pragmatics, their arrangement in the books and the illustration of their usage. The analysis reveals many differences between the collections regarding the number of items, their typology, the description of their meanings and use as well as the illustrative content. The paper suggests integrating the description of the contemporary proverb dictionaries for children with educational material with an eye to describing the ways in which proverbs are presented, explained and taught.

Opis:
The highly expressive and metaphorical language of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical and literary works has been studied in numerous books and articles, but it is surprising that hardly anything has been said about his obvious inclination to use proverbs and proverbial expressions throughout his voluminous writings. Nietzsche himself was very well aware of his phraseological style that includes proverbs, proverbial expressions, proverbial comparisons, twin formulas, and also literary quotations. His well-known book Jenseits von Gut und Böse (1886, Beyond Good and Evil) is definitely no exception when it comes to the phraseological language of its aphorisms, fragments, and other short prose texts. When Nietzsche cites proverbs, he almost always varies them in such a way that his newly created anti-proverbs refl ect his search for a new value system diff erent from traditional moral codes. He clearly delights in creating blasphemous anti-proverbs from well-known Biblical proverbs. But he does the same with traditional folk proverbs, arguing that they too contain antiquated moral values. Some of these parodied, manipulated or alienated proverbs are also informed by Nietzsche’s dislike for moral didacticism, his own anti-feminism, and his desire to shock his readers into escaping from narrowly understood wisdom. Of course, Nietzsche uses also numerous proverbial phrases and idioms in order to add rhetorical strength to his arguments, relying heavily on employing such phraseological units as innovatively and at times shockingly as possible. Many contextualized examples will illustrate these points, showing that Nietzsche was indeed a masterful craftsman of employing proverbial language.

The challenge of political instability in Nigeria has defied all solutions till date. The National Youth Service Scheme introduced in 1973 and the Federal Character principle entrenched in the Constitution since 1979, among others, have failed to engender peace and stability in the polity. Judging from this, this paper offers a possible explanation for the seeming failure of all efforts to combat the monster of political instability in Nigeria since independence. Given the fact that most Nigerian leaders and commoners alike are always quick in reverting to some proverbs to rationalize their actions or inactions; five of the most widely acclaimed causes of political instability in Nigeria were examined vis-à-vis some selected Yoruba proverbs. This was done against the backdrop of a Yoruba proverb: Owe lesin oro, oro lesin owe; b’oro ba sonu, owe la fi n waa. (“A proverb is like a horse: when the truth is missing, we use a proverb to find it”). A thorough analysis reveals that political instability in Nigeria has its philosophical foundations well entrenched in the spirit of selected Nigerian proverbs and concludes that political stability may continue to elude the country as long as citizens indulge in hiding under the cover of the letters and spirit of selected Nigerian proverbs to perpetrate evil in governance.
