Opis:
Presence, uptake and production of serotonin and its effect on the production of other hormones were studied using immunocytochemical flow cytometric method. In a serotonin (10–12 M) containing medium up to 15 min. serotonin level does not elevate in the cells, but after 30 min. there is a significant elevation which remains till 4 h. In cells starved in salt solution the elevation is higher which calls attention to the effect of (starvation) stress. Using four enzyme blockers tryptophane hydroxylase inhibitor PCPA decreased (in serotonincontaining medium) and MAO B blocker deprenyl increased serotonin content, while serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine and MAO-A blocker clorgyline were ineffective. Extremely low concentrations of serotonin (10–15 M in case of histamine and 10–18 M in case of ACTH and T3) in the milieu was sufficient for increasing hormone (ACTH, T3, histamine) levels inside the cells. In conclusion; serotonin can be taken up by the cells and can be produced by induction, as Tetrahymena has enzymes for building it up and decomposing it. For synthesizing serotonin; basic molecules from outside are not needed. Serotonin in a minute amount can induce production of different hormones.

Opis:
Changes in Gregarina typographi Fuchs, 1915 (Eugregarinorida: Gregarinidae) infection levels were studied in a population of the bark beetle Ips typographus (L., 1758) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), which lives in association with Norway spruce. Beetles were repeatedly collected from three logs of trap trees during 2009 and 2010 at one study site in the Czech Republic with a high level of G. typographi infection (seasonal mean of 15.7% in 2009 and 19.8% in 2010). Infection levels did not differ statistically between sexes, logs, and trap trees but did differ among sampling dates. During the beetle reproductive period, the infection levels nearly doubled in 2009 (from 10.7 to 19.8%) and more than tripled in 2010 (from 9.3 to 31.3%). We infer that the continuous increase in the G. typographi infection level within each of the two years resulted from transmission among beetles in nuptial chambers during the May–June reproductive and egg-laying period.

Badania potwierdziły obecność Cryptosporidium sp. i Giardia sp., odpowiednio w 65% i 95% badanych próbek wody. Średnia liczba wykrytych pierwotniaków Cryptosporidium sp. wynosiła 0,11 oocyst w 1 dm3, a Giardia sp. 0,31 cyst w 1 dm3 wody.
Monitoring of protozoan parasite species, Cryptosporidium and Giardia, is not covered by quality control system of surface waters in designated swimming areas. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of these protozoa in the selected surface waters used for recreational activities in Masovian voivodship. In addition, microbiological parameters (E.coli, enterococci) as well as the spore content of sulphite-reducing clostridia were determined. The studies confirmed the presence of Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia sp. in 65% and 95% of tested water samples, respectively. The average number of detected Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts was 0.11 oocysts per 1 dm3, while of Giardia sp. – 0.31 cysts per 1 dm3 of water. The source of protozoan oocysts could be agricultural contamination as well as unregulated processes of wastewater management at farms located near the swimming areas. The spore number of sulphite-reducing clostridia (non-standardized parameter) did not exceed 50 cfu/100 cm3. The study results confirm that it is purposeful to extend the routine microbiological testing methodology of recreational water by the discussed sanitary indicators in order to improve health security of the population.

Mast cells, discovered by Paul Burnet over one century ago, have been long recognized only as inductors of IgE-dependent allergic diseases (allergy of type I, Th2 lymphocytes dependent). However, numerous recent studies have indicated that they play an essential role in many other immunological and non-immunological processes. Infection with Toxoplasma gondii elicits the induction of a strong cell-mediated immunity characterized by a highly-polarized Th1 response, which can protect against allergy. Knowledge of the contribution of mast cells to Toxoplasma invasion is still limited, and the present article discusses aspects of the relationship between mast cells and T. gondii.

Opis:
The ecology of tundra terrestrial environments has gained increasing attention due to potential major changes resulting from global warming and climate change. However, the composition of terrestrial microbial communities and their role in the biogeochemical carbon cycle are less well studied. This is the first report of the C-biomass of bacteria, fungi, and representative protozoa (heterotrophic nanoflagellates, naked amoebae, and testate amoebae) in Alaskan tundra soil samples, and the effects of glucose solution enrichment in laboratory studies simulating release of soluble organic compounds as may occur during permafrost melt and increased plant root exudates due to global warming. The data for three moss-rich surface samples, two in spring and one in summer (2011), are reported for C-supplemented (8,000 μg glucose-C) and non-supplemented treatments in laboratory culture. Seven days after supplementation, fungal C-biomass in the glucose-treated and untreated samples were similar in the range of 5 to 11 mg g–1 soil dry weight, the highest values in the summer samples. The bacterial C-biomass was the next highest in the range of 20 to 120 μg g–1 soil dry weight, followed by heterotrophic nanoflagellates (2 to 14 μg g–1 soil dry weight). The naked amoebae (0.13 to 0.94 μg C g–1 soil dry weight) and testate amoebae (2 to 20 ng C g–1 soil dry weight) contributed the least C-biomass. All of the bacterial and protozoan treatments showed increased biomass with glucose supplementation. Based on size, and C-biomass estimates, the phagotrophic protozoa appear to be organized in a classical bacterial-based trophic hierarchy (i.e. bacteria – nanoflagellates – naked amoebae – testate amoebae, in ascending order). Correlations of the C-biomass of bacteria to each of the protozoa, provided further evidence of a trophic pyramid; bacteria vs. nanoflagellates (r = –0.986), indicating top-down control by predatory flagellates, bacteria vs. naked amoebae (r = –0.361) and bacteria vs. testate amoebae (r = –0.131), each of decreasing magnitude as would be predicted for higher level consumers. Estimates of bacterial predation indicated strong predatory pressures on bacteria by the protozoa, greater with C-supplementation compared to the non-supplemented treatments.

Opis:
Background. Although the parasitofauna of wild carnivorous mammals in Poland is quite well recognized, there has been only one research carried on this issue so far in Białowieża Forest - the last lowland primeval forest of temperate zone in Europe. Material and methods. Twelve wild and two domestic species of carnivorous mammals are living in Białowieża Forest. In our work faeces or intestines of all of them except ermine (Mustela erminea) have been examined and parasites or their eggs (or oocysts) recorded. In total 222 faecal probes from 13 species and 11 intestines of weasels have been investigated. Results. All species of examined carnivorous mammals were infected with parasites. The most infected species has occurred red fox Vulpes vulpes (over 70% infected with parasites) meanwhile only about 30% of otters Lutra lutra were infected. We found at least three protozoan species, one trematode, one tapeworm and nine species of nematodes. Except trematode Alaria alata, all of them are reported for the first time from Białowieża Primeval Forest. Oocysts of coccidia have been found in faeces of nine host species, with the highest prevalence (29.4%) in badger. Six species of carnivorous mammals have been occurred infected with trematodes (highest prevalence 42.1% in wolves) and two with tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium latum with the prevalence 2.6% in otter and 31.6% in wolves). All examined host species were infected with nematodes (with prevalence from 14.7% in lynx to 72.7% in red fox). Results of our work should be treated as preliminary researches on the species composition of parasitic fauna invading carnivorous mammals in Białowieża Primeval Forest.

Introduction. Parasitic diseases are caused by many species of protozoa, helminths, and arthropods. Parasitosis can be divided into gastrointestinal, tissue and skin diseases and can appear in many different parts of the body. The most common route of transmission is via ingestion. The oral cavity may be a place of colonization for pathogens, resulting in lesion formation. Objective. The aim of the study is to characterise and describe the most important symptoms of parasitic diseases that can be diagnosed during dental examination. Abbreviated description of the state of knowledge. In this study there are discussed diseases caused by the most common protozoa and the nematodes in the oral cavity. Leishmaniasis is caused by Leishmania spp. protozoa, and its most common symptom observed in the oral cavity are painful ulcerations. Toxoplasmosis usually manifests itself through enlargement of the lymph nodes, and the appearance of antibodies in saliva. Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax cause periodontitis chronica and inflammation of the soft tissue. The first of the nematodes, Gongylonema pulchrum, is the reason for, among others, the itchy sensation of a moving foreign body under the mucosa. The most common symptoms of Ancylostoma infection are erythematous papules. Filariae causes an infection that manifests through swelling, abscesses, and painless nodules inside the mouth. Conclusions. New pathogens are emerging worldwide and pose a threat to health. They can manifest their symptoms in the oral cavity, but the diagnosis of the disease by the dentist is not easy and requires interdisciplinary knowledge and consultation.

The AST/ALT ratio was estimated in 182 dogs infected with Babesia canis. Among these dogs 65 had anaemia and 68 were azotaemic. Student’s t test was used to compare means of the AST/ALT ratio in anaemic and non-anaemic dogs, and in azotaemic and non-azotaemic dogs (p < 0.05). The differences in AST/ALT ratio between anaemic (1.52 ± 1.15) and non-anaemic (1.76 ± 1.34) dogs were statistically insignificant (p = 0.23), however, the comparison of AST/ALT ratio between azotaemic (2.68 ± 1.52) and non-azotaemic (1.08 ± 0.53) dogs revealed a significantly higher value of this index in azotaemic dogs (p = 0.00). The present results suggest that kidney injury contributed to increased AST activity in these dogs.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite of great medical and veterinary importance. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in wild boars hunted in the Slovak Republic in 2003. Examination of 320 wild boars revealed a seroprevalence of 8.1%. The majority of seropositive wild boars came from the north-western and southern regions of Slovakia. This study indicates that T. gondii infection is common in wild boars in the Slovak Republic, underlines its zoonotic potential and the importance of high standards of hygiene during the handling of game.
