    Based on the findings of translation experts on the translation series, the author focuses on Polish-German tropes in the works of A.M. Swinarski, carrying out a detailed analysis of selected translations of Goethe’s poems. A comparison of translations by Swinarski, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Stefan Zarębski, Feliks Konopka and Andrzej Lam reveals changes in the sphere of meanings designed in the original and reflects on the principles of literality and interpretation in translation practice.

    Opis:
    The paper attempts to establish the position of useful and specialist texts in the general classification system of texts. Technical literature notes a distinct typological chaos, resulting above all from the fact that there are no clear classification criteria. The study uses first of all the criterion of genre, also non-linguistic criterion – the communication function of a given text. Making the position of the categories of texts is supposed to help translators in a selection of strategies adjusted to the type of text, and at the same time appropriate linguistic means which will enable them to preserve equivalence respective to a given text.

    Artykuł podejmuje tematykę onomastyki literackiej – na przykładzie jednego onimu przedstawione zostały trzy metody tłumaczenia nazwy własnej w zależności od przyjętej idei. Wybór metody jest szczególnie ważny, gdyż jest literatura ta kierowana jest do dzieci, które w specyficzny sposób odbierają teksty literackie, stąd tak ważny jest dobór odpowiedniej strategii translatorskiej. Ważnym czynnikiem, który można brać pod uwagę podczas procesu przekładu jest również osoba autora oraz jego intencje. Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić w 1916 roku wydała zbiór baśni inspirowanych mitologią słowiańską i ideą panslawistyczną. W związku z tymi różnymi czynnikami, można więc brać pod uwagę różne techniki, które zostały zademonstrowane w artykule.
    The article is on the subject of literary onomastics – one onimu is an example of three methods presented for translating names depending on the adopted ideas. The choice of method is particularly important because this literature is directed to children who perceive literary texts in a specific way, hence the importance of the selection of an appropriate translation strategy. An important factor to be taken into account during the process of translation is also the author and his intentions. Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić in 1916 released a collection of fairy tales inspired by Slavic mythology and the Pan-Slavic idea. In view of these various factors we can therefore take into account the different techniques that have been demonstrated in the article.

    The presented paper argues the importance of proper names in fantasy and science fiction in general but focuses primarily on the highly successful Star Wars franchise. Worldwide popularity of George Lucas’ creation resulted in the need of translation of Star Wars materials to other languages. Translators were given a task, among others, of creating a glossary of proper names essential to the overall story, including such as Jedi and Sith. This paper is an analysis of translation of these proper names in Star Wars novels released before the year 2000 in German (61), Polish (39) and Russian (18). It presents all variants proposed by the translators before the final one was canonized and comments on their choices and used strategies. The analysis shows that while German and Polish translators usually retained use of previously established versions, Russian translators proved to be less consequent in this matter.
    Niniejszy artykuł poświęcono istotności nazw własnych w fantastyce na przykładzie amerykańskiej franczyzy Gwiezdne Wojny. Światowa popularność stworzonego przez George’a Lucasa uniwersum zrodziła zapotrzebowanie na tłumaczenie towarzyszących mu materiałów. Jednym z zadań tłumaczy było stworzenie glosariusza nazw własnych – kluczowych dla fabuły, wielokrotnie powracających, takich jak np. Jedi oraz Sith. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę tłumaczeń wymienionych nazw własnych w powieściach z serii Gwiezdne Wojny opublikowanych w językach niemieckim (61), polskim (41) i rosyjskim (19) przed 2000 rokiem. Zawiera on wszystkie zaproponowane w nich przez tłumaczy warianty, komentuje ich wybory i wykorzystane strategie. Analiza pokazuje, że podczas gdy tłumacze niemieccy i polscy z reguły wykorzystywali zaproponowane wcześniej wersje, o tyle rosyjscy postępowali pod tym względem mniej konsekwentnie.

    The case of Dubravka Ugrešić's Kućni duhovi [Home Ghosts]This article is devoted to the Polish translation of Kućni duhovi [Home Ghosts], a collection of short stories by Dubravka Ugrešić, her only book addressed to the youngest readers which has been published outside Croatia. The study focuses on the issue of cultural strangeness generated mostly by proper names that appear in the stories: ghosts' names, and the names and surnames of other characters. In her translation, Dorota Jovanka Ćirlić domesticated the source text, replacing all of them with Polish equivalents. The comparative analysis presented in this article considers translation strategies she used and illustrates them with numerous examples.
    Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest przekładowi na język polski zbioru opowiadań Dubravki Ugrešić pt. Domowe duchy. Jest to jedyna książka pisarki adresowana do najmłodszych czytelników, która ukazała się poza granicami Chorwacji. Szczególna uwaga skierowana została na kwestię obcości kulturowej, którą w książce Ugrešić generują przede wszystkim nazwy własne (nazwy duchów, imiona i nazwiska pozostałych bohaterów). Dorota Jovanka Ćirlić, autorka przekładu, dokonała udomowienia tekstu źródłowego, zastępując wszystkie nazwy własne, pojawiające się w oryginale, polskimi ekwiwalentami. Zastosowane przez tłumaczkę strategie translatorskie zostały omówione oraz zilustrowane licznymi przykładami w toku analizy porównawczej.

    The article focuses on the translation of non-literary Chinese proper names, a subject which to date has not enjoyed much research interest as a result of the common belief that proper names are untranslatable. The article discusses techniques used in the translation of Chinese anthroponyms, toponyms and brand names into Polish and English. The author refers to the strategies used in the process of transferring names to the target language and presents the consequences of applying given techniques from the cognitive perspective, which entails analysing the names in terms of their structure and meaning. Particular attention is paid to the connotations of the names, the impact they have on the speakers of a given language, as well as the mental images that can be derived from their structure. In the contrastive analysis of the names of tourist locations in Beijing and their Polish and English equivalents, the author applies the cognitive grammar approach as developed by Ronald W. Langacker. The image schemas of the names are used to present the distinct conceptualizations embodied in the names with the same references in different languages. One of the chapters describes how European names are adapted into Chinese. The study also provides an overview of the characteristics of the Chinese onomasticon, a factor which makes translation from Chinese to European languages particularly complicated. The observations made in the course of the analysis permit conclusions to be drawn on the linguistic worldview created by Polish, Chinese and English propria.

    Due to the fact that the Polish translation of the Harry Potter series by Andrzej Polkowski is one of the most popular and influential in the latest years it seems to be very interesting to find out what qualities make a translation as popular as the original text. Obviously, it can be assumed that there must be a wide range of conditions to be met. However, this paper focuses only on one aspect, namely proper names, which can be found in the books as the plot is set in a non-real world containing a significant number of nouns that were invented for the purpose of the scenery and action. Thus, they pose a real challenge for translators. What is more, the article aims at answering the question of tendencies in the use of translation procedures.

    In the article we analyze proper nouns occurring in Evgeny Schwartz’s Дракон. A very important aspect which should be considered in the play’s translation is its intertextuality. The author refers to other works by taking over the characters and introducing the prototype text components. We will look over the only Polish translation of Jerzy Pomianowski (1965) and three English translations of Elisaveta Fen (1975), Yuri Machkasov (2001) and Anna Epelbaum (2013).

    Every specialist text carries traces of the institutionalized context in which it is created. The context is based on the socially sanctioned communicative relationship, on the strength of which discourse partners enter into a so-called communicative contract. A text is then a verbal realization of contractual obligations, strictly standardized at the level of genre. Hence, information about the status of the discourse partners and the nature of their contractual (communicative) obligations is essential for accurate interpretation of a text. This, in turn, places double responsibility on the translator, who is obliged not only to transfer the discourse object into the target language, but also to “present” the sender of the original to the recipient of the translate in such a way as to render their status and discourse characteristics. Failing that, the translator will not succeed in reconstructing the original discourse contract, and hence attaining functional coherence of the translation. The aim of this article is to examine whether, and to what extent, translators have managed to present communicating subjects of Polish hospital discharge summary to the French recipient.

    The paper presents an analysis of Polish equivalents of the Russian proper name Kolobok. Their diversity results from insufficient familiarity with the Russian source text (a folk fairy tale) in Poland, which is caused by little acquaintance with the hero of the story and lack of a Polish equivalent of such a fairy tale character that carries the same communicative value. Examples in-cluded in the paper do not always preserve the communicative value of the context: in few cases, it had been assessed which elements of the meaning are relevant and significant, and which are redundant, i.e. semantically irrelevant. Provisional equivalents in most cases are based on the inner semantics of the discussed proper name.

    Celem artykułu jest analiza wybranych współczesnych przekładów dwu- i/lub wielojęzycznych dla dzieci. Podczas gdy badania nad przekładami literatury dla dzieci zdają się obecnie rozwijać, badania nad książkami oferującymi, obok tekstu źródłowego, przekład(y) na język obcy nie doczekały się dotąd systematycznych badań. Wydaje się, iż ten szczególny typ korpusów może stanowić interesujące pole badawcze, zwłaszcza, że tradycyjny model komunikacji w procesie tłumaczenia ulega, dla tego typu korpusów, poważnym zmianom.
    The aim of the article is to study some recent bilingual and multilingual translations for children. While studies on the translation of children’s literature are becoming more advanced nowadays, the field of multilingual translations for children is still unexplored. Analysis of this particular type of corpus offers an interesting object of study when one realizes that the communication model in multilingual translations differs considerably from the traditional one.

    The article briefly presents the history of the absorption of foreign proper names by the Polish language. The introduction outlines the key properties that differentiate proper names from common names. Then the three chief periods in the history of Polish are presented, along with their typical, dominant ways of absorbing proper names. These periods coincide with the periodization proposed by Z. Klemensiewicz (Old-Polish, Middle-Polish, New-Polish periods). The author discusses finally the main modes of absorbing proper names: phonetic-morphologic adaptation (e.g. Piotr, Agnieszka, Szymbark), adideation and reinterpretation (e.g. Bakchus – Beczkoś), translation (e.g. Felix – Szczęsny, Parva – Mała), transposition (e.g. Milano, Trier, Inez).

    This paper analyzes problems involved in the Polish translation of proper names contained in Boris Pasternak’s novel Doctor Zhivago. Empirical material was collected from two Polish translations published in book form: by Jerzy Stempowski (Paris: Instytut Literacki 1959) and by Ewa Rojewska-Olejarczuk (Warsaw: PIW 1990). The study aimed to analyze translatorial equivalents taking into account the following criteria: consistency with the named object, informativeness of the name, and retaining the cultural ambience. The following research methods were applied: descriptive, com-parative analysis as well as functional and stylistic analysis. The comparative analysis focused on the adequacy of the applied translation methods.

    Acronyms are lexical units that have been thoroughly explored in terms of their morphology or pronunciation. However, their semantic value has not been entirely determined yet. The present paper aims at investigating the manner in which a semantic value of an acronym, and particularly a difference between proper and common acronyms, influences techniques applied to translating them. In order to achieve the aforementioned objective, on the basis of the cognitive theory of proper names, the authors have distinguished Polish and French acronyms being ergonyms as well as acronyms belonging to proper names and these designating item classification. The paper concerns the analysis of both Polish and French translations of ergonyms in foreign language press and French common acronyms in the Polish press. The performed analysis allows observing a tendency towards transferring acronymsergonyms that play the role of a rigid designator rather than full names in the target text. By contrast, the techniques of translating common acronyms differ, depending on whether they designate phenomena typical of the source culture or universal ones.

    Artykuł porusza problem tłumaczenia antroponimów sztucznych na przykładzie francuskiego i angielskiego przekładu powieści „Pod Mocnym Aniołem” Jerzego Pilcha. Celem pracy jest odpowiedź na pytanie w jaki sposób tłumaczone są nazwy własne osobowe, które z natury rzeczy nie posiadają swoich ekwiwalentów uznanych w językach docelowych oraz jakie techniki tłumaczenia przeważają w ich przekładzie. W tym celu autorka przeanalizowała techniki tłumaczenia zastosowane wobec antroponimów sztucznych w dwóch przekładach powieści i zbadała związek pomiędzy formą nazwy osobowej a wyborem tłumacza. W przekładzie tej kategorii nazw dominującą techniką okazało się być tłumaczenie syntagmatyczne; na 30 nazw własnych z tekstu oryginalnego przetłumaczonych w ten sposób zostało 18 antroponimów w języku francuskim i 19 w języku angielskim. Pozostałe zidentyfikowane techniki to kolejno: tłumaczenie syntagmatyczne z reprodukcją, reprodukcja, ekwiwalent funkcjonalny, pominięcie i dodanie. Nazwy bohaterów wykreowane przez pisarza są wymagające w tłumaczeniu, ponieważ tłumacz nie może oprzeć się na żadnym użytym wcześniej sposobie ich tłumaczenia i stanowią wyzwanie, zwłaszcza kiedy są silnie związane z kulturą języka docelowego.
    The aim of this work is to present the problem of translation of fictive anthroponyms on the example of French and English version of „Pod Mocnym Aniołem” by Jerzy Pilch by answering the questions: how those fictive anthroponyms are translated and which techniques are used the most often. For this purpose, we analyze translation techniques of anthroponyms in French and English and the connection between the form of an anthroponym and the translator’s choice. In this category, literal translation has the highest frequency (18 French and 19 English names of the total 30), the other techniques are literal translation with borrowing, borrowing, functional equivalent, reduction, and addition. The names of all characters created by the writer are difficult to translate because those elements do not have any equivalents known by the culture of the target language.

    W artykule przedstawiono problematykę transpozycji nazw własnych w parze języków polski–rosyjski. Zagadnienie to – do którego analizy wykorzystano metodę przypadków – rozpatrzono z punktu widzenia dydaktyki przekładu. Ze względu na potrzebę indywidualnego podejścia do każdej nazwy własnej zaproponowano odpowiednie przygotowanie zajęć. Pomogą one studentom przećwiczyć różne sytuacje tłumaczeniowe i zobaczyć ten sam onim z kilku perspektyw, a w konsekwencji – w kilku różnych wariantach docelowych, zależnych od kontekstu. W artykule odwołano się zarówno do tłumaczenia specjalistycznego (w tym poświadczonego), jak i literackiego.
    This article discusses the transposition of proper names between Polish and Russian. This issue, with the use of the case study method, is analysed in the translation teaching context. Considering the need for an individual approach to each proper name, the article provides recommendations to prepare classes and courses that will help students practice different translation situations and see the same onym from a variety of perspectives and, consequently, in several different context-dependent target variations. This article refers to various types of specialist (including certified) and literary translation.

    This article compares translation techniques for proper names in Spanish and French within a novel considered fantasy literature. For our study we have analyzed the first novel of the saga A song of Ice and Fire with the aim of establishing a classification of proper names, looking into the most common translation techniques in both languages and comparing them in order to find out common patterns.
    El presente artículo compara las estrategias de traducción de los nombres propios en francés y en español de una novela perteneciente al género de literatura fantástica. Para ello se ha utilizado la primera novela de la saga Canción de hielo y fuego, con el fin de establecer una clasificación de los nombres propios, comprobar cuáles son las técnicas de traducción más habituales en ambas lenguas para finalmente compararlas y comprobar en qué casos coinciden.

    Uważa się powszechnie, że nazwy własne nie podlegają tłumaczeniu. Autorkę interesuje transferowanie urbanonimów w przetłumaczonych na język francuski dwóch polskich powieściach kryminalnych, których akcja toczy się we współczesnejWarszawie. Analiza została oparta na technikach tłumaczenia nazw własnych K. Hejwowskiego (2004, 2015).Wyodrębniono techniki dominujące w różnych kategoriach urbanonimów (transfer prosty, transfer z modyfikacją graficzną, tłumaczenie). W przypadku nazw ulic, alej i placów pochodzących od nazwiska tłumacze stosują neutralizację fleksyjną. Inną często stosowaną techniką jest dodawanie kwalifikatorów rue (‘ulica’) i quartier (‘osiedle’) do nazw ulic i osiedli. W języku polskim często się je pomija, co w przypadku nazw ulic jest niedopuszczalne w języku francuskim. Zaobserwowano również techniki pozwalające na usunięcie nazwy własnej lub zastąpienie jej nazwą pospolitą. Zastosowane techniki tłumaczenia urbanonimów ułatwiają francuskiemu odbiorcy śledzenie wątków powieści oraz odczytanie obcych nazw. Pozbawiają go jednak możliwości poznania nazewnictwa z innego obszaru kulturowego.
    There is a common belief that proper names are not to be translated. The author traced the transfer of urbanonyms in French translations of two Polish crime novels set in contemporary Warsaw. The analysis has been based on the techniques of translating proper names by K. Hejwowski (2004, 2015). The dominant techniques used in various categories of urbanonyms have been distinguished (simple transfer, transfer with spelling modification, translation). In the case of street names, avenues and squares derived from surnames, translators use inflectional neutralization. Another frequent technique is to add the qualifiers rue (‘street’) and quartier (‘district’) to the names of streets and neighbourhoods. In Polish, they are often omitted, which, in the case of street names, is unacceptable in French. Moreover, several techniques allowing removing a proper name or to replace it with a common noun have also been detected. All in all, the techniques applied for translating urbanonymsmake it easier for the French recipient to follow the threads of the novel and to read foreign names. However, they deprive him/her of contact with some features of foreign names’ strangeness that characterize a different cultural area.

    Vrcholné prózy C. Kosmače Jarní den, Tantadruj a Balada o trubce a oblaku obsahují velké množství vlastních jmen, a to především reálných toponym z oblasti jihozápadního Slovinska, antroponym užívaných ve vesnickém prostředí v 1. polovině 20. století a přezdívek. Na základě analýzy originálu a překladu F. Benharta konstatujeme, že překladatel při práci s vlastními jmény volil především metodu transkripce (výpůjčky), méně často používá substituci, a to především u hypokoristik, a přezdívky nejčastěji doslovně překládá. Tímto přístupen zachovává, ba i silně podtrhuje kolorit slovinského prostředí, avšak na druhé straně ochuzuje čtenáře o některé organické prvky próz.
    Kosmač’s best prosaic works Spring Day, Tantadruj and Ballade on a Trumpet and a Cloud contain a great number of proper names, in particular, real toponyms from the South‑West of Slovenia, anthroponyms used in the village environment in the 1st half of the 20th century, and nicknames. Based on the analysis of the original texts and Benhart’s translation, we state that, when translating proper names, the translator used mostly transcription (loanwords), less frequently substitution, mainly for hypocorisms, and literal translation for nicknames. This approach maintains, even emphasizes, the atmosphere and color of the Slovenian environment, however, it also deprives readers of the organic elements of the original works.

    Artykuł jest poświęcony eklezjonimom prawosławnym w języku polskim, utrwalonym w obiegu oficjalnym. Pierwsza część tekstu stanowi przegląd nazw obiektów sakralnych zawierających warianty heortonimu Zaśnięcie Matki Bożej, druga zaś omawia ich potencjalne zastosowania w charakterze odpowiedników w przekładzie z języka rosyjskiego na polski. Autorka podkreśla, że poza perspektywą onomastyczną i przekładoznawczą istotne są ustalenia językowe o charakterze preskryptywnym, a także czynniki historyczne, kulturowe oraz teologiczne.
    This paper is devoted to orthodox ecclesionyms in Polish, as recorded in official usus. The first section is an analysis of the names of churches and parishes, which include the heortonym The Dormition of the Mother of God. The second part presents their possible use as equivalents in translation from Russian to Polish. The author notes that, along with the onomastic and translation perspectives, it is necessary to take into account linguistic rules of a prescriptive nature, as well as historical, cultural and theological factors.

    The aim of the article is to perform a comparative analysis of functions served by characters’ proper names in Jingo by Terry Pratchett and in the Polish translation of the book. The study was based on the theory of two acts; it showed which functions were served by the examined proper names, how many names served individual functions and which functions were preserved, which were changed, and which were lost. The data gained from the study will be further used to advance the research on means of translating onyms in novels so as to preserve the functions served by them in the original.
    Celem artykułu była analiza porównawcza funkcji nazw własnych postaci w powieści Terry’ego Pratchetta zatytułowanej Jingo oraz w jej polskim przekładzie. Badanie przeprowadzono w oparciu o teorię dwóch aktów. Studium pokazało, jakie funkcje pełnią analizowane onimy, jaka jest ich częstotliwość oraz które z nich zostały zachowane w tłumaczeniu, które zostały zmienione, a które utracone. Pozyskane informacje zostaną wykorzystane w badaniach nad metodami tłumaczenia, umożliwiającymi zachowanie wszystkich funkcji literackich onimów.

    Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest problem transpozycji hiszpańskich imion i nazwisk na język polski w tłumaczeniach poświadczonych. Autorka, odpowiadając na pytanie, w jaki sposób tłumacz powinien traktować nazwy własne w dokumentach, stara się zebrać i usystematyzować zasady odmiany hiszpańskich imion i nazwisk w języku polskim. W tym celu, bazując na danych statystycznych Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas, dokonuje analizy morfologicznej stu najpopularniejszych imion żeńskich, męskich oraz nazwisk i grupuje je wg końcówki, by następnie określić wzór i zasady ich odmiany. Obok kwestii językowych, Autorka porusza również kwestie prawne, dokonując przeglądu najważniejszych aktów prawnych regulujących zasady nadawania i rejestracji imion i nazwisk w Hiszpanii, oraz zasady „przekładu” nazw własnych w tłumaczeniach poświadczonych na język polski. Wieloaspektowa analiza problemu pozwala jej stwierdzić, że odmiana hiszpańskich imion i nazwisk w języku polskim jest niezwykle złożona i potwierdza konieczność kształcenia tłumaczy tekstów specjalistycznych również w zakresie języka ojczystego.
    The purpose of this paper is the issue of the transposition of Spanish given names and surnames in certified translations into Polish. Answering the question how the translator should treat proper names in the documents translated, the author is trying to collect and systematize the principles of inflection of Spanish given names and surnames in their translations into Polish. In order to attain this, on the basis of the statistical data provided by Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas, she carries out the morphological analysis of one hundred most popular female and male given names and surnames, and groups them according to their inflection, in order to determine the patterns and principles of their inflection in Polish.Apart from the linguistic issues, the author also raises legal issues, making a survey of the most significant legal acts regulating the principles of naming and registering given names and surnames in Spain, as well as the principles of “translating” proper names in certified translations into Polish.The multifaceted analysis of the issue enables the author to conclude that the inflection of Spanish given names and surnames in Polish is extremely complex and confirms the necessity to educate translators of specialized texts also in the scope of their native tongue.

    Чланак је покушај приступа проблему културног значења властитих имена у процесу превођења књижевног дела на примеру романа „На Дрини ћуприја” Иве Андрића и његовог превода на пољски. Превод сматрамо као комуникацију два простора знакова (семиосфере) који одржавају културно наслеђе, историјска искуства и хиерархију вредности одређене заједнице. Пошто је култура Босне и Херцеговине хетерогена, опозиција своје/туђе не може се разматрати искљушиво бинарно. Неке од властитих имена у роману евоцирају истовре‑ мено простор ‘свој’ и простор ‘туђи’. На примеру етнонима Турци покушавамо да прикажемо неколико преводилачких ог‑ раничења које потичу из семантичких и културних аспеката властитих имена. Разматра се затим проблем полисемије онима Турци, који је примећен такође у функцији апелатива. У пет преводилачких модела представља се на који начин култура оригинала и култура превода ограничавају преводиоцу одабир еквиваленције.
    The article discusses the problem of the cultural meanings of proper names in the translation process of the novel ‘The Bridge on the Drina’ by Ivo Andric and its translation into Polish. The translation is considered to be the symbolic communication of two semiotic spaces (semiosphere) which cultivate the cultural heritage, historical experience and the hierarchy of values of a particular community. Since the culture of Bosnia and Herzegovina is heterogeneous, the opposition between familiarity and foreignness can not be considered only as binary. Some of the proper names in the novel simultaneously evoke the space of familiarity and the space of foreignness. In the case of ethnonym ‘Turks’ we will try to present several translational constraints which stem from the semantic and cultural aspects of proper names. We also examine the problem of polysemy of the proper name ‘Turks’ which functions as an apellative. On the basis of the five translational methods we will show in what way both the cultures (the one of the original work and the one of the translation) limit the translator in choosing equivalents.

    Powieść Olgi Tokarczuk Księgi Jakubowe to szeroka i skomplikowana panorama epicka, której akcja dzieje się na pograniczach państw, kultur i religii. Przetłumaczenie takiego utworu na jakikolwiek język to zadanie wymagające dużego trudu i starannych przygotowań, skierowanych przede wszystkim na opanowanie wszystkich możliwych kontekstów – historycznych, językowych, wyznaniowych. Szczególnie zaś trudnym wyzwaniem jest przetłumaczenie Ksiąg Jakubowych na jeden z języków, które są elementem rzeczywistości przedstawionej w powieści i znajdują się w relacjach interferencyjnych z innymi językami, używanymi przez bohaterów lub funkcjonującymi w ich środowiskach. Takim językiem jest właśnie język ukraiński. Artykuł jest próbą podsumowania doświadczenia przekładu powieści na ten język z uwzględnieniem największych trudności, z którymi przyszło zmierzyć się tłumaczowi.
    Olga Tokarczuk’s novel The Books of Jacob is a wide and complicated epic panorama the action of which takes place on the borderlands of countries, cultures, and religions. Translating such a work into any language is a task that requires a lot of effort and careful preparation, aimed first of all at exploring all possible contexts: historical, linguistic, religious. A particularly difficult challenge is to translate The Books of Jacob into one of the languages that are part of the reality presented in the novel and are in relationships of interference with other languages used by the characters or functioning in their environments. Ukrainian is such a language. This article is an attempt to summarise the experience of translating the novel into this language, taking into account the greatest difficulties faced by the translator.

    Opis:
    The article draws attention to those aspects of language which show the individual nature of the Bible of Jakub Wujek and The Bible of Gdańsk. These bibles are actually two different works of this translation, with different confessional affiliations. Moreover, the article represents an attempt to analyze and classify the few places of parallel text in which the lexical differences are present. At the beginning, the author looks for these differences in the proper nouns which determine the names of God in the Old Testament, and in the names which characterize Jesus. The selected biblical place names are analyzed in the last part of the article. The research material was taken from the texts of the first editions of the Bible of Jakub Wujek and The Bible of Gdańsk.
