Opis:
Energy efficiency has become more important in every industry and daily life. Designing and building a more efficient marine vehicle can lead to lower fuel consumption and a longer lifetime for the components of the vehicle. Erosion caused by cavitation reduces the service life of the propeller and the related components in the propulsion and maneuvering system. Reducing cavitation leads to a longer life for these components. This paper aims to explain and investigate propeller blade cup as a cavitation reduction method for marine propellers. A cavitating no-cup propeller is created and analyzed then the cupped version of this propeller is generated and analyzed to compare with the no-cup propeller. Cavitation results of these propellers are investigated. In addition, the thrust, torque, and efficiency of the propellers are compared.

Opis:
During designing the ship its designer tends to obtain as high as possible efficiency of ship propulsion system. To this end on certain ships additional elements such as: nozzles, half-nozzles or suitably profiled fins attached to underwater part of ship’s hull before screw propeller, are applied (sometimes they are intended for the mitigating of vibration resulting from operation of screw propeller). Another device which affects operation of screw propeller is streamline rudder capable of improving its efficiency (most of the transport ships is fitted with single screw propeller and streamline rudder placed behind it). In this paper the influence of streamline rudder on screw propeller efficiency has been examined with the use of numerical methods of fluid dynamics (CFD).The obtained results indicate a very favourable influence of the rudder on screw propeller efficiency. Research in this area is continued and its results concerning impact of particular geometrical parameters of rudder on screw propeller efficiency, will be presented in the future.

During designing the ship its designer tends to achieve as-high-as possible efficiency of ship’s propulsion system. The greatest impact on the efficiency is introduced by ship’s screw propeller whose efficiency depends not only on its geometry but also distribution of wake current velocity. To change wake current distribution and improve propeller efficiency an asymmetric form is usually applied to stern part of ship hull. This paper presents results of numerical analysis of wake current velocity distribution, performed by using a CFD method for a B 573 ship of symmetric stern and the same ship of an asymmetric stern. Next, the mean values of screw propeller efficiency in non-homogenous water velocity field were calculated for both the hull versions of B 573 ship.

Opis:
This paper describes a coaxial contra-rotating propeller (CCRP) system to calculate the hydrodynamic characteristics and then obtain the optimum operational condition to install on two different large bulk carrier and VLCC. The method is based on boundary element method (BEM) to obtain the hydrodynamic performance of any complicated configuration such as CRP system, and then the optimum propeller data is obtained by the systematical method at the design condition. We prepared a software package code, namely SPD (Ship Propeller Design), which has model mesh generation, solver and numerical output results. The comparison of the propulsive performance was made between the propeller alone and CRP arrangement. Major finding include good agreement between predictions using the numerical code and experimental data for both ships.

Opis:
The article presents a detailed discussion of the theoretical models of four different fluid dynamic devices: an ideal propulsor, an ideal fluid brake, an ideal screw propeller and an ideal turbine. The four models are presented with all relevant mathematical formulae regarding the forces, the power and the efficiency. It is demonstrated that the application of the model of an ideal optimum fluid brake according to the Betz theorem for determination of the maximum effectiveness coefficient of an axial wind turbine is not correct. In the case of a turbine the inclusion of important rotational flow losses may increase the maximum value of the turbine effectiveness coefficient above the level defined by Betz. Therefore the model of an ideal turbine should be an inversion of the model of an ideal screw propeller. This conclusion is supported by numerical calculations. It may influence the design procedures of wind turbines and may lead to increase in their efficiency.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of computational evaluation of the hull-propeller interaction coefficients, also referred to propulsive coefficients, based on the unsteady RANS flow model. To obtain the propulsive coefficients, the ship resistance, the open-water characteristics of the propeller, and the flow past the hull with working propeller were computed. For numerical evaluation of propeller open-water characteristics, the rotating reference frame approach was used, while for self-propulsion simulation, the rigid body motion method was applied. The rotating propeller was modelled with the sliding mesh technique. The dynamic sinkage and trim of the vessel were considered. The free surface effects were included by employing the volume of fluid method (VOF) for multi-phase flows. The self-propulsion point was obtained by performing two runs at constant speed with different revolutions. The well-known Japan Bulk Carrier (JBC) test cases were used to verify and validate the accuracy of the case studies. The solver used in the study was the commercial package Star-CCM+ from SIEMENS.

Opis:
Hydrodynamic shape optimization plays an increasingly important role in the shipping industry. To optimize ship hull and propeller shapes for minimum total (friction+wave) calm-water resistance and maximum open water efficiency, respectively, the main particulars of a hull and propeller model are considered as design variables. The optimization problem is performed by using an integrated hull-propeller system optimization problem (HPSOP) code in a multi-level and multi-point methodology in early-stage ship design. Three numerical methods with variable fidelity are employed to carry out the hydrodynamic performance analysis of a ship’s hull and propeller. A ship and its propeller are selected as initial models to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimization procedure. The numerical results show that the developed technique is efficient and robust for hydrodynamic design problems.

Opis:
Propeller-hull interaction coefficients - the wake fraction and the thrust deduction factor - play significant role in design of propulsion system of a ship. In the case of inland waterway vessels the reliable method of predicting these coefficients in early design stage is missing. Based on the outcomes from model tests and from numerical computations the present authors show that it is difficult to determine uniquely the trends in change of wake fraction and thrust deduction factor resulting from the changes of hull form or operating conditions. Nowadays the resistance and propulsion model tests of inland waterway vessels are carried out rarely because of relatively high costs. On the other hand, the degree of development of computational methods enables’ to estimate the reliable values o interaction coefficients. The computations referred to in the present paper were carried out using the authors’ own software HPSDKS and the commercial software Ansys Fluent.
