Opis:
Few data on drag and torque on locked propeller towed in water are available in literature. Those data refer to propellers of specific geometry (number of blades, blade area, pitch and skew of blades). The estimation of drag and torque of an arbitrary propeller considered in analysis of ship resistance or propulsion is laborious. The authors collected and reviewed test data available in the literature. Based on collected data there were developed the empirical formulae for estimation of hydrodynamic drag and torque acting on locked screw propeller. Supplementary CFD computations were carried out in order to prove the applicability of the formulae to modern moderately skewed screw propellers.

Opis:
The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to predict internal and external flows has risen dramatically in the past decade. This research aims to use the commercial software, ANSYS Fluent V.14.5, to illustrate the effects of the rudder and blade pitch on the hydrodynamic performance of the marine propeller by experimenting with propellers and rudders of the M/V Tan Cang Foundation ship, which has designed conditions as follows: diameter of 3.65 m; speed of 200 rpm; average pitch of 2.459 m; boss ratio of 0.1730. Using CFD, the characteristic curves of the marine propeller and some important results showed that the maximum efficiency of the propeller is 0.66 with the open water propeller and 0.689 with the rudder‒propeller system at the advance ratio of 0.6. The obtained outcomes of this research are a significant foundation to calculate and design an innovative kind of propulsion for ships with high performance.

Opis:
Propeller cavitation is a main source of fluctuating pressure and noise induced by propellers, and the tip vortex cavitation is the principal source. The present study measures the flow fields near the blade tip using the 2D-PIV technique. The experimental setup and scheme are introduced. We monitor the process of generation and shedding of the propeller tip vortex in real time and analyse the dynamic structure of the tip vortex by testing the propeller wake field under different phases of the axial plane. The distribution characteristics of radial and axial velocity are also analysed. The influence range and the vorticity of the tip vortex and trailing vortex are obtained. All of the measured quantitative data are useful for future propeller design.

The microstructure and resultant mechanical properties of the MM55 manganese brass applied to ship sand - cast propeller were investigated in relation to the propeller blade section thickness. It was stated that the increase of blade section thickness from 15 mm to 45 mm resulted in the increase of the volume fraction of alpha-phase by 5.3% and that of k-phase by 23.7%, the decrease of the volume fraction of betha-phase by 2.9%, the 0.2% proof stress R0.2 by 11.3%, the ultimate tensile strength Rm by 5.5% and the 5.65 So elongation A5 by 16.8%.

Opis:
The lifting surface model is widely used in screw propeller design and analysis applications. It serves as a reliable tool for determination of the propeller blade mean line and pitch distribution. The main idea of this application was to determine the blade shape that would satisfy the kinematic boundary condition on its surface with the prescribed bound circulation distribution over it. In this paper a simplified lifting surface method is presented – in which the 3D task for the entire blade is replaced by a set of 2D tasks for subsequent blade section profiles.

Opis:
Propeller performance is typically considered under clean conditions, despite the fact that fouling is an inevitable phenomenon for propellers. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of roughness due to fouling on the performance of a propeller using a CFD simulation in conjunction with the roughness function model. A simulation of a clean propeller is verified for a five-blade propeller model using existing experimental results. A roughness function model is then suggested based on existing measured roughness data. The simulations are extended for the same propeller under varying severities of roughness. Initially, it is concluded that KT and ηo gradually decrease with increasing fouling roughness, while KQ increases, compared to smooth propeller. For instance, at J=1.2 for medium calcareous fouling, KT is reduced by about 26%, KQ increases by about 7.0%, and ηo decreases by 30.9%. In addition, for the rough propeller, the extra power required is defined as the specific sea margin (SSM) to compensate for the power loss. A slight roughness causes a large decrease in ηo. A propeller painted with foul-release paint and an unpainted propeller are found to require 2.7% SSM and 57.8% SSM over four years of service, respectively. Finally, the use of foul-release paints for propeller painting is strongly advised.

Opis:
This paper studies the effect of material on the hydro-elastic behaviour. The geometry of flexible propeller changes due to hydrodynamic and inertial forces acting on the propeller. By using prepared software (called HYDRO-BEM and ELASTIC-FEM) the hydro-elastic features of the propeller made of various materials are analyzed. In the software the hybrid boundary element and finite element methods are used. First, the load acting on the propeller is determined by using the BEM and deformed propeller geometry is then obtained by the FEM. In the next step, the load on the deformed propeller is determined by the BEM and a new shape is obtained. The iterative procedure is repeated till the blade deflection and hydrodynamic characteristics (thrust, torque and efficiency) of the propeller become converged. Four different materials are examined. It is concluded that the hydro-elastic behaviour of the composite propeller is strongly affected by its flexibility due to light material.

Opis:
Being able to predict ship and marine propulsion noise is an important issue for naval architectures and the international maritime community. The main objective of this paper is the numerical investigation on the noise propagation by the high skew marine propeller working in a non-uniform inflow via RANS solver in the broadband frequency range. The pressure fluctuations were monitored at three points on the propeller blade, then by using the FFT operator we computed the blade passing frequency (BPF) for different propeller loading conditions. Based on these pressure pulses and adopting the Fowcs Williams-Hawking model we calculated noise radiated at the monitoring points. The results showed the BPF and noise level increased by increasing the load on the blades and we also observed that the noise generated at the leading edge was greater than at other points. Furthermore, the study of pressure fluctuations showed the propeller tip has more pressure variations in one revolution than other regions of the propeller surface.
