Opis:
The paper is founded on the distinction between traditional school represented by Johann F. Herbart and progressive school here represented by Bell Hooks. The main purpose of this article is to describe specific characteristics of these two educational models taking into account changes within them. Foucault’s disciplinary power schema provides methodological tools for better apprehension of the location of power in the classroom. In particular, the concept of exam mentioned by Foucault in his Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison has great importance for better understanding of changes within the two aforementioned educational models and student-teacher relations. It appears that power is a fundamental element in these relations, which is exemplified by the presence of the hidden curriculum and how it affects students. Conceiving teaching as a technical activity the autor argues that the way this power is performed depends on the teacher’s character, skills and will.

Opis:
After a prolonged absence of the topic of education reformers in the public discussion nowadays it’s obviously an increased interest in their approaches and models of performance. The theoretical reflections of the progressive education based on the ideas of the creative power of the child figuring in a mythical, romantic-coded image of the child as a genius. This conception was in opposite to the rigid forms of teaching, to every automatism of learning, against the authoritarian treating of teachers with students.

Opis:
In this essay, the author contends that the approach to education described by Rousseau in Émile is not only impractical but is founded on four misconceptions concerning human nature and development. These are (1) the vulnerable-child child fallacy (that children must be protected from learning the wrong things); (2) the stage-of-development fallacy (that children can learn only certain kinds of things at certain ages); (3) the lone-child-in-nature fallacy (that children learn best from interacting physically with nature, not from interacting verbally with other people); and (4) the controllability fallacy (that is is possible to know a child so well as to be able to control, through subtle means, what the child learns). The author’s own research indicates that the ideal environment for children’s natural, self-directed learning is very different from, in many ways opposite to, that outlined by Rousseau.

Opis:
The essay is devoted to the relationship between the design of school furniture and other interior design elements in the open-air school (école de plain air) in Suresnes (designed by E. Beaudoin and M. Lods, 1932–1935) and the pedagogical and social assumptions accompanying its construction. The functioning of the school and the role that furniture plays in this program are discussed, as well as how the furniture design responded to the interesting pedagogical program of the international outdoor school movement. The second part of the text discusses the main trends in the design of school furniture in France in the interwar period. Architects’ theoretical views on the problem of so-called “new education” in the design of school buildings and their equipment (mainly texts and projects by Maurice Barret, published in “Architectured’aujourd’hui”). Trends in furniture design are presented against the background of the pedagogical concepts of that era: Maria Montessori’s pedagogy and progressive trends in teaching, under the influence of which class spaces began to be designed as rooms with flexible functions, thanks to features such as light, multi-functional school furniture using modern shapes and materials.
