Opis:
This paper offers a theoretical description and discuss alternative approaches to Early Intervention (EI). The theoretical framework is based on the philosophical and educational frameworks of Hans Skjervheim and Gert Biesta. The central part of this discussion is the elaboration of different approaches in education, and how it relates to EI. It is stated that EI is historically rooted in an Anglo-American tradition where the central goal was to reduce the societal consequences of children struggling in schools and life in general. Evaluations, tests and interventions directed towards these children is at the core of this tradition. The alternative presented in this article points at an educational framework based on a European, relational centred, education framework and offers a perspective where EI is re-framed into a strategy where EI is focusing on the adult, responsible, person in the relationship.

Opis:
Completed integration of sustainable values into higher education systems has yet to take place in European Union countries, the further efforts should be implied that sustainable development become an integral part of the academic culture. Education for sustainability is still lacking a consistent interdisciplinary conceptual framework all around European countries. Investigated Study programme of Environmental Engineering for the Sustainable Living Environment was carried out at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania) first cycle Bachelor's studies at Faculty of Environmental Engineering. Involvement of students in research and practical activities was encouraged through team work with projects in all related study subjects, providing research practice and through their final thesis. Students feedback reflected high level of satisfaction of their experience in sustainable development topics, reliable engagement and understanding of the opportunities offered to them by Study Programme related to Sustainable Living Environment topics.

Opis:
A positive perspective in social sciences is one of the key directions in contemporary youth studies and an important point of reflection on education. In recent decades, the Positive Youth Development concept (PYD) has been a particularly clear and significant perspective for studying adolescence on a global scale. This perspective is crucial for many theoretical assumptions and educational projects. The aim of this article is to analyse the concepts and theories (directly and indirectly) related to this concept in youth studies. In this paper, significant changes in the reflection on adolescence have been analysed, which turned the vision of a developmental stage full of tensions and conflicts into a period of great opportunities for the personal development and also gave new meaning to youth’s good life. The PYD key concepts and theories plus practical education have been presented. Additionally, critical remarks on positive concepts in youth studies have been analysed.

Opis:
Purpose: The study concentrated on the process of evaluation of public programs currently implemented with the support of European Union funds in Poland. The aim was to show how the evaluation practice was adopted in the regional administration within programming and implementation of Regional Operational Programs 2007–2013 (ROP). The author analysed what types of decisions are primarily supported by evaluation and what functions evaluation serves. Methodology: The quantitative analysis was based on data drawn from documentation of the full population of ROP evaluations completed in 2007 to 2012, which was acquired from 16 ROP evaluation units. Findings: The practice of evaluation was well adopted in regional administration and has grown rapidly in recent years. 236 studies, costing more than 16 million PLN, were completed by the end of 2012. However, most studies were of limited value as they concentrated on the implementation process, not on the effects and justification of intervention. Implications: This study focused on quantitative aspects of the knowledge production process (evaluation reports). It omitted the question of actual evaluation use, which together with evaluation process quality and development of evaluation culture should be a subject of further investigation. Originality: This study was the fi rst review of ROP evaluations in Poland. It went far beyond the scope of data collected previously by the Ministry of Regional Development and proposed novel categorizations of evaluation subjects that may be useful for other than ROP evaluations.

Opis:
Aim. The aim of this research is to examine how critical thinking is reflected in Lithuanian higher education study programmes and what conceptual model(s) of critical thinking are used by study programme  makers. Methods. The subject of the study encompasses 8 higher education study programmes and their subjects. They are analysed based on a constructed conceptual framework, which defines 9 critical thinking skills and 18 critical thinking dispositions. Results. Analysis, evaluation and decision making are the most common critical thinking skills embedded in the goals of a study course and its learning outcomes. Explanation, interpretation and making inferences are less pronounced. Dispositions are listed rarely and in quite an indistinct way. Only open-mindedness and honesty have clear expression and statement in study programmes, though to a lesser extent. Dispositions such as concern for every person, inquisitiveness and flexibility are very fragmented. Conclusions. For the meantime, critical thinking is neither reflected equally and coherently in all parts of study programmes – course goals, content, described methods and learning outcomes – nor clear conceptual models of critical thinking can be detected. Research restrictions. The policy of the colleges and universities on providing the descriptions of study programmes and syllabuses publicly, limits their accessibility. Due to the sampling of study programmes, the research represents only selected study programmes. Practical application. The created framework may be used to study programmes’ development by introducing the defined critical thinking skills in the descriptions of the study programmes more systematically.

Opis:
The text deals with the question of the influence of international exchange programmes on reducing ethnic prejudices in their participants. Apart from a brief introduction into the issue of reducing prejudice, it comprises 392 free responses of Czech respondents, predominantly students, who have filled out an online survey as part of the project Intergroup Attitudes and Intergroup Contact in Central Europe. The participants gave accounts of their real contacts with Polish people, oftentimes within the framework of international exchange programmes, Erasmus in particular. Based on the comparison of the results of the qualitative analysis of the statements with the conditions of successful reduction of prejudices, one can suggest that international exchange programmes should have a positive influence on reducing negative ethnic stereotypes and prejudices among their participants.

Currently, road safety is one of the most important challenges in many areas: not only in terms of transport and logistics but also as far as social and economic issues are concerned. The constantly increasing road traffic and the growing number of transported goods and people are some of the challenges addressed through the activities of many ministries, institutions and social organisations. Ensuring appropriate safety conditions, aimed at the protection of human health and life, is currently among the most important objectives. Road traffic safety is therefore one of the most important aspects of the policy of Poland and other members of the European Union. Hence, more new procedural solutions should be sought to reduce the negative impact of road traffic on society, the environment and the economy. In this situation, one of the most important tools are programmes improving the safety of road users. The article presents the activities undertaken by Poland, as well as actions that result from the road safety strategy of the European Union.

SafeTy application
Opis:
The aim of this article is to identify the SafeTy programme and application as a tool to enable information sharing and mutual alerting of local communities about public safety threats. Developed at the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk, the SafeTy mobile application provides opportunities for residents to communicate and cooperate in the area of safety. It is thus intended to increase the activation of the local community and raise the safety culture of residents. It is also a tool for diagnosing the level of public safety. The article also addresses the issue of geographical spatial analysis of crime based on criminological theories and its potential use in the application. It was assumed that the access to the SafeTy mobile application, which enables mutual threat warnings, influences the activation of local communities contributing to their sense of security and to the safety culture of residents. The study was conducted by means of a critical analysis of the literature and a diagnostic survey, using survey questionnaires (interview and questionnaire). Preliminary results of the research indicate that the SafeTy tool responds to the needs of local communities in terms of information about local threats, while also mobilising residents to identify antisocial behaviour, thus creating opportunities to counter these phenomena. Undoubtedly, local communities are looking for spaces to communicate about threats through, among other things, “groups” on social networks. This need is met by the SafeTy application, which is free of information about users’ private lives or advertising material, as it is dedicated to issues that shape public safety and thus refers to the concept – “neighbourhood watch”.

The modern student is privately a player. He/she spends hours sitting at the computer and experiencing many positive feelings such as joy, surprise, curiosity, excitement. Is there anything more exciting than the adventure in a virtual world and at the game? In our presentation we will try to provide an educational game as an interesting opportunity to teach and study early school children and the students – future teachers. Projecting educational games (both board and computer ones) and testing them, can be a wonderful way to develop students’ interests and to learn and study in an interesting way. We will present our projects conducted with the students of the University of Gdansk, of Gdansk Higher School “Athenaeum”, and of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, which may provide inspiration for educational and teaching activities of other teachers and show that science can also be interesting and adventurous.
