Opis:
This paper investigates the spatial process of productivity growth in the European Union on the foundations of the theory of New Economic Geography. The proposed model is based on the study of NUTS 2 regions and takes into consideration a spatial weights matrix in order to better describe the structure of spatial dependence between EU regions. Furthermore, our paper attempts to investigate the applicability of some new approaches to spatial modelling including parameterization of the spatial weights matrix. Our study presents an application of the spatial panel model with fixed effects to Fingleton’s theoretical framework. We suggest that the applied approach constitutes an innovation to spatial econometric studies providing additional information hence, a deeper analysis of the investigated problem.

the purpose of this paper was to review literature covering the topic of site index with particular emphasis on Scots pine, the most important forest-forming species in poland. we discuss the history of the site index, research on various tree species, statistical modelling methods, the spatial application of site index and age impact assessment. the history of research on the site index of forest species is long and dates back to the 18th century. Many researchers thought that determining the quality of the habitat is very important from the point of view of rational forest management. the site index, as a measure of the potential of the habitat on which the forest grows, is one of the most important characteristics of forest stands. the site index depends on the selected model, but is most often expressed as the average or top height of trees of a given species at a certain age. In our review, we point out several insufficiencies of studies on the site index, external influences and the connection of the site index with spatial conditions. Furthermore, research conducted so far has not explicitly confirmed that there is a relationship between the site index of pine stands and their geographical location in poland. More research on the site index, especially in regard with climate change, is needed.

The paper discusses Bayesian productivity analysis of 27 EU Member States, USA, Japan and Switzerland. Bayesian Stochastic Frontier Analysis and a twostage structural decomposition of output growth are used to trace sources of output growth. This allows us to separate the impacts of capital accumulation, labour growth, technical progress and technical efficiency change on economic development. Since estimates of the growth components are conditioned upon model parameterisation and the underlying assumptions, a number of possible specifications are considered. The best model for decomposing output growth is chosen based on the highest marginal data density, which is calculated using adjusted harmonic mean estimator

Opis:
The article deals with Poland’s transition to a market economy in the 1990s and compares the changes that took place in the Polish economy at the time with developments in mature economies. Using three indexes-the enterprise turnover rate, job flow rates, and productivity growth decomposition-the authors attempt to show that transition processes in Poland have had a positive effect on the country’s enterprise sector, though there is still a lot of work to be done. These three indexes help understand the structural changes that occurred during the transition from central planning to an open market economy in Poland. Using a unique set of data from Polish companies, the authors calculated several measures of resource reallocation, along with enterprise entry and exit rates, and job flow rates. Moreover, they computed the labor productivity growth rate. The high rates of resource reallocation suggest that the Schumpeterian processes of creative destruction have played a major role in productivity enhancement. Surprisingly, labor productivity decomposition shows that the “within effect” influenced productivity the most, while the net entry effect was significant and positive. The poor availability of data explains why the authors were unable to calculate more sophisticated measures of productivity growth. The quality of the data may be also responsible for the substantial sensitivity of the results to the productivity decomposition method.

Opis:
Research background: The issues of finance-growth nexus and financial instability have attracted considerable attention, but have been studied in isolation. This paper aims at filling this gap by providing insights into the implications of financial instability for long term productivity growth. Purpose of the article: This paper sheds light on the relationship between credit-to-GDP ratio volatility and the total factor productivity (TFP) growth rate. The impact of systemic banking crises and financial depth on productivity growth is also studied. Methods: The System GMM estimation of panel data for over 100 countries and spanning the period of 1970-2009 is used. The decomposition of credit-to-GDP ratio into trend and cyclical component is performed using the Hodrick-Prescott filter and a regression analysis with country-specific intercepts and slopes. The data on TFP comes from the Penn World Tables database. Findings & Value added: TFP growth is negatively affected by credit volatility, mainly in less technologically advanced countries, while financial depth exerts a negative influence on TFP growth in economies with superior technology. Systemic banking crises and the concomitant credit crunches have a negative impact on productivity growth, regardless of the level of technological development. Moreover, the level of human capital, patents and globalization fuel productivity growth. Macroeconomic instability, measured by the rate of inflation, hampers TFP growth.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that performing gross value added growth decompositions in four variants makes it possible to deepen the observation of economic processes. These variants have been obtained on the basis of two fundamental dichotomies. The first of them involved performing a decomposition of the gross value added growth into the contributions of production factor remunerations, and, in parallel, a decomposition into the contributions of production factor stocks and total factor productivity (TFP). The second dichotomy involved performing separate but parallel decompositions for employees and for employed persons. The devised methodology made it possible to perform computations for the years 2001–2015 at the aggregate level, according to NACE sections, according to voivodships and according to both the NACE sections and the voivodships. The decompositions were performed basing on Statistics Poland’s data from the Bank of Local Data and the National Accounts. The presented results confirm that performing decompositions according to the two above-mentioned dichotomies makes it possible to deepen the analyses of the economic growth, which is especially important in the regional aspect.

The aim of this study was to assess the current state of small-leaved lime stands under climate change, as well as to identify optimal conditions for the occurrence and further growth of natural lime regeneration under the stand canopy to grow productive and sustainable mixed stands. The areas of small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) stands in plain Ukrainian forests and mixed stands with English oak (Quercus robur L.) were defined according to reference materials (as of 2016). Growth and liveability peculiarities of natural regeneration of lime under the canopy of oak-lime stands in climate change were identified. The main stand characteristics contributing to maximal appearance and further development of advance growth of lime, such as composition, age and relative density of stocking, were determined. It was found that the lime stands of vegetative origin occupy the largest part of the lime forests’ area, being less resilient and productive than those originated from seeds. Small-leaved lime is the best associated species in mixed oak stands. The presence of lime improves health, assortment composition, and productivity of oak stands and increases their resistance against pests and diseases. In the future, lime can play an important role in the adaptation of forests to climate change due to its biological and forest properties and adaptability to a sustainable existence in a relatively wide range of environmental conditions. A summary of the studies complements a system of knowledge about the current state of lime stands as well as peculiarities of their regeneration and growth. The data obtained can be used as a theoretical base for forest management to promote natural regeneration and maintain the sustainability of these forests.

Opis:
Black alder is naturally widespread across all of Europe and has an increasing importance for forest ecosystems. Thanks to the considerable tolerance to adverse climatic and edaphic environmental conditions black alder is important both in open landscapes and can also be involved in the rehabilitation of disturbed soils. Assessment of site productivity is essential for providing a frame of reference for silvicultural diagnosis and prescription in order to ensure the sustainability of existing and newly established ecosystems. The most accepted method of evaluating site productivity is the site index (SI). The aim of the presented research was to develop the SI model for black alder in southern Poland. The developed SI model was used as a tool in order to test the research hypothesis assuming the increase in site productivity for black alder in southern Poland. The research material for development of SI model were stem analysis data from 180 research plots. Both, the local model parameter, which was estimated individually for every tree, and the other parameters estimated globally for the whole data set were estimated simultaneously. Changes in site productivity were analyzed on research plots and a set of 12,974 stands from the forest inventory database. Site indices calculated using the developed model are negatively correlated with age/ positively correlated with establishment year of the stands. This confirms the existence of the phenomenon of increasing site productivity for black alder. During the last century site productivity measured with site index increased on average 5 m. Therefore, black alder that belongs to the fast-growing tree species should be considered of the increasing importance for forest management.

The aim of the study was to develop a site index model for Scots pine stands in southern Poland describing changes in height growth of stand's upper storey over time. The research material contained the height growth data obtained from an analysis of 189 tree stems. The collected material was used to develop the parameters of six dynamic growth equations which allowed to determine site productivity and predict changes in height growth of stands with age. Statistical criteria for assessing the accuracy of mapping empirical data and biological reasonableness were the basis of selection of the equation that best fits changes in height growth of the examined pine stands with age. The developed model can be used to predict the growth rate and determine the site index for Scots pine stands in southern Poland.

Root system quality is very important for maize growth, development and productivity. The maize breeding, generally, is focused on the performance of aboveground part of plant. It is interesting to compare the relationship between root and shoot of maize studied in divergent conditions. Results of the study of the effects of climatic regimes on variations among maize genotypes were described in paper. The genotype x environment interaction (GEI) are analysed through factorial regression models in order to explicate of the effects of environmental factors on root growth. Chosen statistical method is very helpful tool to evaluate the environmental effect on genetic variability of maize root traits. There was confirmed significant effect of GEI on the root traits. GxE interaction has simply interpretation, because it can be described by the use of linear relations among covariates. It concerns soil and air temperature and water availability (EVTP or rainfall amount).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the peat and zeolite mixtures substrates performance on cucumber seedling quality and crop yield. The research was carried out in a greenhouse covered with double polymeric film at the Institute of Horticulture, Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry. Cucumber seedlings were grown in different substrates: peat, peat + zeolite 1 : 1, peat + zeolite 2 : 1, peat + zeolite 3 : 1 and peat + zeolite 4 : 1. Cucumber seedlings grown in peat and zeolite substrates are shorter; the leaf area is smaller than that of the seedlings grown in peat alone. The dry mass of the aboveground part of these seedlings is lower (insignificant difference), however, the root mass is higher than those grown in peat alone. The addition of zeolite to peat substrate does not have any positive effect on the photosynthesis pigment content in cucumber seedling leaves. The physiological growth indices of the seedlings grown in peat-zeolite substrates were lower compared to those grown in peat. When zeolite is added to peat substrate, net assimilation rate is higher compared to those grown in peat. Higher yields (significant difference) were demonstrated by cucumbers, the seedlings of which had been grown in peat-zeolite substrates.

Seedlings of various provenances and progenies were greenhouse grown in sand cultures with different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The first experiment tested 20 provenances and the next studied 45–50 half-sib families of 9–10 provenances to establish the interaction between Picea abies genotypes and nutrition levels. Spruces of various origins differed in their nutrient requirements. In particular, seedlings from Wisła and Istebna grew better at smaller phosphorus levels. The genotype × environment interactions were significant for numerous traits when seedlings were grown at different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium, and for a few traits for potassium. The proportion of variance explained by interaction was small. Generally, the interactions were significant for a greater number of traits at progeny level than at provenance level. The results suggest that it is possible to select genotypes which are suitable for specific site conditions and genotypes which are stable over a wide range of nutrition levels.

Modern views define capital as the ability to perform labour. These two terms: capital and labour, are intertwined. Capital is an abstract and potential category, while work, however, represents the transfer of capital to the objects of labour that create its value. In an economy saturated with assets, labour is highly productive, which increase the level of welfare. This article analyses the growth of fixed assets in the economy against labour productivity and welfare level. Moreover, it presents the quandaries of economic growth acceleration, analysing the historical position of Poland.
Współczesne poglądy określają kapitał, jako zdolność do wykonywania pracy. Te dwa pojęcia kapitał i praca stanowią tandem.
