Opis:
Biodiesel is a promising energy substitute of fossil fuels since it is produced from renewable and biodegradable sources. In the present work, reactive distillation (RD) process is designed and simulated using Aspen Plus process simulator to produce biodiesel of high purity through esterification reaction. The simultaneous reaction and separation in same unit enhances the biodiesel yield and composition in RD process. Two flowsheets are proposed in present work. In the first flowsheet, the unreacted methanol is recycled back to reactive distillation column. Biodiesel with 99.5 mol% purity is obtained in product stream while the byproduct stream comprises 95.2 mol% water, which has to be treated further. In the second flowsheet, a part of methanol recycle is split and purged. In this case, the biodiesel composition in product stream is 99.7 mol% whereas water composition is 99.9 mol% in byproduct stream, which can be reused for other process without treatment.

Opis:
The cost-effectiveness of reactive distillation (RD) processes makes them highly attractive for industrial applications. However, their preliminary design and subsequent scale-up and operation are challenging. Specifically, the response of RD system during fluctuations in process parameters is of paramount importance to ensure the stability of the whole process. As a result of carrying out simulations using Aspen Plus, it is shown that the RD process for isoamyl acetate production was much more economical than conventional reactor distillation configuration under optimized process conditions due to lower utilities consumption, higher conversion and smaller sizes of condenser and reboiler. Rigorous dynamic modeling of RD system was performed to evaluate its sensitivity to disturbances in critical process parameters; the product flow was quite sensitive to disturbances. Even more sensitive was product composition when the disturbance in heat duties of condenser or reboiler led to a temperature decrease. However, positive disturbance in alcohol feed is of particular concern, which clearly made the system unstable.

The introduction of a simulator of Police actions in crisis situations to police training of command skills made it necessary to know the ongoing relationship between training on the simulator and the actual actions of the Police. Visualisation of the effects of decisions taken by commanders in a virtual simulation environment, ending in most cases in the escalation of the threat, trigger off analytic mechanisms and awareness of responsibility for the life and health of people and the officers carrying out commands issued by commanders and other persons taking part in the simulation. Simulation training provides the opportunity to observe the ongoing relationship between cells of the command structure adopted by commanders, depicting among others, the sources of errors and threats of destabilisation of commanding process. There are various scenarios that are possible to play including elements such as: police riot, crowd aggression level, and weather conditions. Based on the feedback from simulation training participants, who are mostly those responsible for commanding processes while performing daily duties, it is reasonable to say that the training conducted on the Police simulator in crisis situations allows the commanding skills and abilities to be significantly shaped. What is more, as the simulator is a universal tool, it enables cooperation training to be conducted with non-police entities, the fire brigade, medical emergency, city guard, and crisis management teams.

Opis:
Nowadays the equipment used on ships is becoming more and more sophisticated, safety of shipping depends heavily not only on trustworthiness of high-tech products, but also on mariners’ competence. It is necessary to find methods to enable seafarers to keep track with technical developments. Simulators as a tool combined with a properly developed course curriculum and qualified instructors provide an appropriate method not only for training, but also for measuring, assessing and evaluating individual mariner performance in order to test levels of competency and proficiency. According to Nieri (1995, p. 1/6), “The development of performance-based assessment tools would utilize the widely-recognized advantages of simulators and part-task trainers to generate a scenario in which the license candidate must demonstrate his knowledge of system relationships, knowledge of operational procedures, monitor systems and situations, respond to unexpected occurrences, identify and diagnose problems, and manage personnel, in a dynamic world“. This paper discusses the usage of new capabilities of the NTPRO 4000 full mission ship handling simulator in the assessment and evaluation processes at Lithuanian Maritime Academy.

Opis:
This article presents simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth. Simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth is an application, which supports new method of controlled gas nitriding called ZeroFlow. ZeroFlow method is used for nitriding selected car engine parts, such as crankshafts, camshafts, piston rings, poppet valve springs and discs, piston pins or nozzles for unit injectors. Through the use of simulation models, it is possible to develop the especially dedicated processes with specific parameters for each of this parts, which means that simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth enables forming of nitrided layer with strictly defined properties: required phase structure with thicknesses of particular zones that occurs in it and required hardness distribution. Moreover, using simulation models this layers are obtained in the shortest possible time, which is connected with the lowest energy and gases consumption; therefore, nitriding process using ZeroFlow method (and simulator of the kinetics of nitrided layer growth) is both economical and environmentally friendly and meets with an increasing interest from the industrial consumers. Particular examples of industrial applications of simulator will be mentioned in article. Moreover, this article will show main functions, possibilities and advantages of simulator program; it will also present function called “simulation solver”, which allows optimization of process parameters.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the paper is to analyse the effect of thermomechanical process with different cooling paths on microstructure and mechanical properties of low-carbon structural steel. Design/methodology/approach: The steel used for the investigation was subjected to two step deformation using a Gleeble 3800 simulator and then held at designed temperatures from 650ºC to 800ºC for different times. A final step included water cooling to room temperature to freeze the microstructure. Typical microscopic studies have been done. The analysis of the volume fraction of presented phases was carried out together with the measurement of grain size by means of image analysis. The last part of conducted research was hardness analysis of the steel after the different heat treatments. Findings: It was found that the microstructure constitution and grain size are strongly dependent on the temperature of isothermal holdings. The microstructure of steel held at 800ºC is composed of the mixture of bainite and two kinds of ferrite: globular and acicular. When the temperature was lowered by 50ºC the ferrite shows the globular morphology. When the temperature drops to 700ºC and below it, the microstructure is composed of ferritic-pearlitic mixture. It was observed that when the isothermal temperature was increased the grain size decreased and the opposite effect was observed for the holding time. The longer the time of the isothermal holding, the larger was the grain size. Research limitations/implications: For better understanding of the phase transformation kinetics in this steel the dilatometric test are planned. Practical implications: The knowledge of the microstructure evolution and hot deformation response of low-carbon structural steels is important from the industrial point of view. Originality/value: The combined effects of hot deformation and different cooling paths give the useful information on a microstructure evolution.
