Opis:
Changing a problem’s representation is a crucial process when solving insight problems. Recently, Laukkonen and Tangen (2017) found that observing ambiguous figures such as a Necker Cube before solving problems can increase insight frequency. In our research, we extended their procedure by including measures of feelings of insight (e.g., confidence and pleasure). This approach allowed us to test the replicability of relationships between perceptual switching and insight frequency in terms of both accuracy of problem solutions and insight phenomenology. The research took the form of two studies using two different samples (NA = 68 and NB = 198) using online platforms. Our results consistently showed no effect of prior Necker cube perception on accuracy. However, we found a significant difference in self-reported insight (1 - non-aha! experience to 5 – a very strong aha! experience) in our Sample B study. The results suggest the possibility that viewing ambiguous figures may not have a triggering effect on insight problem-solving performance but that it may trigger stronger insight experiences when solving insight problems.

W artykule przedstawiono ogólny model struktury zależności przyczynowo-skutkowych oraz sposoby dekompozycji i upraszczania złożoności w celu utworzenia modeli formalnych, mających zastosowanie w komputerowych symulacjach badawczych.
Identifying and analyzing cause-and-effect relationships is an important part of the problem description. The basic difficulties involved in modeling such dependencies are the multiplicity and complexity of the phenomena to be taken into account and the limited predictability of the intended results. The article presents the general model of causal relationship structure and the ways of decomposition and simplification of complexity in order to create formal models applied in computer simulation tests.

Creativity and flexibility are considered by many to be inextricably linked. However, the current literature does not offer a clear view about their relationship and flexibility is not a unitary construct in psychological research. In this work, I present a new theoretical approach that considers flexibility a recurrent property in and of the cognitive system and I argue that flexibility is best understood as a link in the variability–stability–flexibility pattern. Investigating this pattern and looking at the dynamic flow from variability to stability and then to flexibility in the functioning of the cognitive system can lead us to better grasp how the system arrives at novel solutions in creative problem solving.

Opis:
Research background: Little research addresses how identifying an opportunity in the international market, whether through active search or serendipitous discovery, may have implications for the subsequent gestation behaviors. An emerging body of research suggests addressing this deficiency by focusing on the cognitive and experience-based factors that international entrepreneurs use to develop an opportunity in the foreign market once identified. Purpose of the article: The aim of this study is to explore the role of active and serendipitous international opportunity recognition (IOR) in entrepreneurs' problem-solving skills (problem-solving speed and creativity), as well as the moderating effect of past negative entrepreneurial experience (PNE) on such relationships. Methods: This study used the survey data collection method through an online self-administered questionnaire. Partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method was used to analyze the results over a sample of Spanish international entrepreneurs. Findings & value added: The results show that entrepreneurs that have identified an international opportunity (IO) actively are better equipped to solve problems speedily than those that have discovered an IO serendipitously. In contrast, entrepreneurs who identified an IO serendipitously are better equipped to solve problems creatively. Furthermore, the impact of active search on problem-solving speed is greater for entrepreneurs without PNE, and the impact of active search on problem-solving creativity is greater for entrepreneurs with PNE. Also, it is found that PNE does not moderate serendipitous IOR relationship with problem-solving competence. These findings are relevant as they indicate that the IOR processes have implications for the subsequent gestation behaviors. Thus, the value added of this study is the combination of cognitive and experience-based factors of the international entrepreneur to enrich the link between IOR processes and IO development. These are two intertwined and interdependent processes, which, however, have been scarcely studied as a whole. The results of this research help international entrepreneurs to understand how and why the way they recognized an IO and having or not PNE influence their problem-solving skills during the IO development phase.

Objectives: Pill-takers seem to have some deficiencies in developing problem-solving styles, in which it plays an important role in their mental health. The present study has aimed to examine the role of problem-solving styles in individuals who have suicidal behavior by taking pills. Methods: This research is a case-control study in which 100 people who had attempted to commit suicide by taking pills and had gone to the toxicity emergency room of the Razi Educational and Therapeutic center in Rasht city, were compared with 100 normal people who were selected as the control group. These two groups of people were compared with each other in terms of their problem-solving styles (which is measured using Cassidy and Long problem solving styles questionnaire). Results: After adjusting the effects of the confounding variables, i.e. level of education, marital status, residential status, history of psychiatry and alcohol addiction, it became clear that pill-takers group in comparison with the control group scores significantly higher in the non-adaptive problem-solving styles i.e. helplessness, problem-solving control, and avoidance styles (P < 0.0001) and also lower scores in adaptive styles, i.e. creative, confidence and approach styles (P < 0.0001). The interactive effects of group membership and gender were not significant in any of the problem-solving styles (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Problem-solving styles are regarded as important risk factors when it comes to attempting to commit suicide by taking pills. Thus, it is essential to teach problem-solving styles to at-risk patients in order to preventing suicidal behavior.

Every human needs the ability to solve problems. In early childhood education, the development of this skill can and should be implemented by solving text tasks. Meanwhile, according to a variety of analyses, a significant number of students are unable to solve these tasks. This is most likely the result of insufficient mathematical competencies of teachers in early school education and related teaching errors, mainly involving calculating exercises and solving tasks according to patterns. At the same time, students who are in fact unable to solve tasks but only limit themselves to the use of learned patterns, in non-standard task situations (not practiced at school) do quite well.

Coping with pain plays a very important role in human life and it may differ depending on the personality characteristics of patients such as their level of optimism. The aim of this study was therefore to determine whether the coping strategies for to cervical spine pain amongof office workers were determined by gender, the locus of pain control orand an optimistic attributional style. 30 office workers (Females = 15, Males = 15) took part in the experiment. The age of the participants was for females (M and for =43; SD=5.,9) and for males (M=44.,9; SD=4.,9. The subjects were asked to fill out 4 questionnaires: (CSQ), (BPCQ), (ASQ), a 10-grade visual analogue scale (VAS) and an original questionnaire. The study revealed that most of the office workers declare the ability to copeing with pain. Women were significantly more focused on emotions as a pain coping strategy than were the males participants. It was also shown that the internal locus of pain control significantly correlates with coping focused on problem solving. Participants characterized by anwith optimistic attributableional style used task oriented strategies more often than did the pessimists. There were no significant differences in the level of perceived pain between optimists and pessimists. It was foundind that there are statistically significant differences in coping with pain coping according to gender. Women were significantly more focused on emotions as a pain coping strategy than were the males participants. A high level of optimism may have a significant impact on the reduction of emotion - oriented strategies such as catastrophising by switching on more beneficial strategies to cope with pain by the individual. There are no significant differences in the level of perceived pain between pessimists and optimists.

The effect of Logo programming language on problem solving skills was investigated in this study. Eighty-five fifth-grade students were assigned to either an experimental or control Logo group. They were pre-tested to assess baseline receptiveness to figural and logical word problem-solving skills. After eight weeks of learning, the Logo experimental group had significantly higher scores than the control group on the problem-solving skills tests (assessing both figural and logical word problem-solving skills). The result revealed significant differences in the figural problem-solving skill between the Logo experimental and control groups. An implication was that Logo programming exercised skills are more critical and relevant to the figural problem-solving skill. Possible alternative explanations and suggestions are provided for future research endeavors.

A number of studies show that both children and adults exhibit difficulties with problem-solving tasks. In fact, only one-third of adults reach the formal operational stage. Coaching such tasks in everybody’s language proves to be helpful only if the situation described is close to life events. The presented study confirmed the improvement in the thematic version of the Wason Test both in pupils and university students, albeit being far from spectacular. The authors suggest distinguishing a bounded type of thinking characterized by highly schematic, mechanistic, and automated thinking. They argue that it results both in educational and everyday failures.

Emotional processing and social problem-solving are important for mental well-being. For example, impaired emotional processing is linked with depression and psychosomatic problems. However, little is known about crosscultural differences in emotional processing and social problem-solving and whether these constructs are linked. This study examines whether emotional processing and social problem-solving differs between Western (British) and Eastern European (Polish) cultures. Participants (N = 172) completed questionnaires assessing both constructs. Emotional processing did not differ according to culture, but Polish participants reported more effective social problem-solving abilities than British participants. Poorer emotional processing was also found to relate to poorer social problem-solving. Possible societal reasons for the findings and the implications of the findings for culture and clinical practice are discussed.

In the paper we present the results of two teaching episodes, which took place in two middle school classes with 13- and 14-year-old students. The students in both classes were asked to solve the same geometrical problem; then a discussion followed, in which they had to justify their solutions. In both cases the students had no prior experience in solving non-typical mathematical problems. Additionally, the students were asked to justify their answers, which is not a common characteristic of a ‘typical’ mathematics classroom at that level. The problem was chosen from a wider study, in which twenty classes from twenty different schools were analysed. One of the aims of the present study was to analyse the skills that require a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and properties. Particularly, we aimed to investigate students’ different solution methods and justifications during problem solving. The results show considerable differences among the two classes, not only concerning the depth of investigating (which was expected due to the different age groups), but also concerning the relationship between achievement (as assessed by the mathematics teacher) and success in solving the problem. These results demonstrate the need for re-directing mathematics education from a pure algorithmic to a deeper thinking approach.
