Opis:
Cheiloscopy is a forensic investigation technique that deals with the identification based on lip traces. Based upon the research, it was established that the arrangement of lines on the red part of human lips is unique for each human being. The present study is an attempt to determine the pattern of lip prints and evaluate its uniqueness in a sample of Naga population and also their association with print in the four quadrants of the lip. A total of 100 (15-40) years individuals were randomly selected. With the help of brush a layer of lipstick was applied on the lips of the subject. Following the basis of Tsuchihashi’s classification the lip prints collected were studied. It was found that Type I’ pattern was predominant among the studied subjects followed by Type I and Type III pattern while Type V pattern was the least frequent Lip pattern distribution in (all four quadrants) in both males and females of Nagas. It is found that no two or more persons had similar features of lip grooves. The frequency of repetition of the lip print pattern in successive quadrant is found to be high. Lip print pattern can be used as an additional tool for personal identification.

The way France was presented in early modern Poland has been researched so far by many historians. However, the state of modern research is still considered insufficient and thus it is important to organize and, if possible, quantify the source material which can be used in this kind of analysis. There are still many manuscripts containing an enormous amount of information concerning the visions of France in early modern Poland, which are yet to be recognized by modern historiography. This report is an attempt to name the most important ones – such as geographical compilations, astronomy handbooks and even poems – all not used frequently enough in this kind of inquiry. This attempt at organization leads to conclusions that there are many historical sources left behind in the archives. They can be used not only to analyse the image of France in the eighteenth century, but also prove to be an excellent basis for more wide speculations – such as reflections on the state of literature and science in Poland in the given period. The fact that most of them were used for educational purposes can be used in advantage for a researcher – one can also analyse the state of early modern Polish education.

Opis:
This article represents an attempt to provide a synthetic presentation of seventeenth-century Gdańsk instrumental music sources, comprising three groups: 1 - manuscripts and old prints, currently found in Gdańsk or elsewhere, that include works by musicians who were active in Gdańsk; 2 - manuscripts from Gdańsk libraries that include works by composers not active in Gdańsk; 3 - manuscripts of Gdańsk provenance, now held in libraries outside Gdańsk, that include works by composers not active in Gdańsk. Several types of sources have survived that are characteristic of the age in which they were created. These include lute tablatures, keyboard tablatures and manuscripts and old prints with compositions for various forces, including keyboard instruments, solo instruments (violin, cornet) with b.c., a 2 and a 3 type compositions for violin (in one case for cornet and bassoon with b.c.) and also larger ensembles, chiefly strings with b.c. The repertoire of the Gdańsk sources is similar to that of other seventeenthcentury European sources. It includes dances, canzonas, fantasias, preambles, sonatas, suites and, in the earliest manuscripts, intabulations of both religious and secular songs. In total, there are some 800 extant compositions, of which the vast majority (around 700) are found in lute and keyboard tablatures. Some compositions may be considered unique in Old Polish instrumental music. They are works by the composers Marcin Gremboszewski and Heinrich Dóbel, who were active in Gdańsk, representing early examples of solo compositions for cornet and violin with b.c., as well as a chamber piece for cornet and bassoon with b.c. Bearing in mind that the number of extant Old Polish instrumental music sources is relatively modest, these Gdańsk sources should be considered a highly valuable supplement.

Most 16-century prints from the “Hosianum” Library in Olsztyn are theological works, both Catholic and Lutheran. They include works by well-known reformation writers, such as Erazmus of Rotterdam, Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, Jean Calvin, Johannes Bugenhagen, as well as less known authors. The counter-reformation movement is represented in the library by the works of John Fisher, Johann Eck, Stanislaus Hosius, Melchior Cano and Robert Bellarmine. This article is not a complete catalogue of reformation and counter-reformation prints kept in the collection of the library. It names and discusses the most typical works from that period, as well as – according to the authors – the most interesting ones.

Polish prints of the Pochayov’s typography (18th Century) The Bazilians’ typography in Pochayov was famous for quantity and quality of it’s prints, variety of the subject matters, broad reading public, and last but not least- multilingual editions. Polish language publishing offer was aimed at satisfying contemporary social demand and was very popular in those days, which can be proved by the quantity of reprints. Publishing activity of the Bazilians did not provoke hostility and antagonisms among the society. To the contrary, being tolerant towards the social variety it was constantly broadening its offer by targeting publicity from all social classes and nations and by taking into consideration their linguistic and cultural preferences. In the Polish offer of the Pochayov publishing house two main literature streams can be distingushed: sacred writings and laic. The first one is represented by numerous sermons, catechisms, prayer-books, hymns and songs. The sacred writing covered also moral-philosophic and religious moralizing texts. Laic literature comprised various hand-books, aids and later on during the Enlightenment period also belles-lettres.

Opis:
The main goal of the article is to draw attention to the underestimated phenomenon of printed paintings. Due to the extensiveness of the matter, the considerations are limited to the study of the production technology (primarily lithography, secondarily photolithography and offset printing), as well as variations of embellishments and framing. The study of the subject was based on field and museum researches, while bibliographic research based primarily on texts of German researchers. This results from the fact, that at the time German producers of graphic images were potentates on the European market. What is more, manufacture and distribution of painting reproductions spread so widely, that without exaggeration, we can use the expressions like “the manufacture” or “the manufactured painting”. The history of the most popular series of paintings were connected with the technological progress. Thanks to the development of printing-techniques the images could be produced in wholesale-quantities. Quickly and naturally the manufactured painting became a representative art of peasantry and blue-collar workers.

Opis:
In 16th-century Spain, the romances of chivalry were one of the pillars of the publishing industry. Today, however, they remain little known to both the general public and literary researchers who rediscovered them just a few decades ago. The special situation of the romances of chivalry means that on the one hand, it is a genre that, along with the development of digitization technology, can receive a second life, and on the other — it poses particular challenges for the researchers. The process of optical character recognition in antique prints with typical editorial characteristics of Spanish romances cannot yet be carried out automatically. Hence, the search for solutions that will bring the reader closer to the content of old print, and the researcher — to carry out research based on text mining. The purpose of the article is to show attempts to introduce Spanish chivalric romance into the Internet space, undertaken in various academic centres, as well as to outline possible perspectives for further actions in this field.

W skład zbioru Biblioteki Fundacji Wiktora hr. Baworowskiego w Lwowskiej Bibliotece Naukowej im. W. Stefanyka NAN Ukrainy wchodzą 1641 druki, wydane w latach 1601-1700.
The Count Victor Baworowski Fundation Library collection in the Lviv National Vasyl Stefanyk Scientific Library of Ukraine (LNSL) includes 1641 prints, issued in the years 1601- 1700. The examination of their preservation condition was carried out using the Stanford method, which was developed at the University of Stanford (USA). The evaluation of the collection was additionally extended by the assessment of the degree of paper acidification. The collection was also studied for microbiology and damage caused by insects. The Stanford method examination showed that almost 90% of the volumes are in a poor preservation condition and require conservation or bookbinding. About 20% prints should already be excluded from use. The examined set does not require deacidification. The average pH of most studied books is above pH 6. About 17% of the collection is more or less damaged by the growth and activity of mold fungi, and almost 25% of the examined collection are books infested to varying degrees by insects.

Opis:
Tobias Zeutschner (b. 1621, d. 1675), organist of St Mary Magdalene’s in Breslau, was not a teacher at the Magdalenaeum gymnasium school affiliated to that church. However, occasional prints preserved in the Silesian-Lusatian Collection of Wroclaw University Library confirm his active participation in the musical life of that school. Until now, the scenarios of plays performed by the Magdalenaeum’s pupils have never been the object of musicologists’ interest. And yet they allow us to add several previously unknown, albeit not extant, items to Zeutschner’s oeuvre. Consequently, the thematic catalogue of compositions by Tobias Zeutschner (prepared by the author) contains 83 items, as compared to the 47 listed by Reinhold Starke in 1900. At least ten of the new titles were noted in the school’s occasional prints. What is more, the Magdalenaeum pamphlets offer additional information about known compositions that is particularly helpful in establishing their chronology. For example, previously we had only an approximate date for the Christmas biblical history ‘Halleluja, höret an die Geburt unsers Herren’, a major work by Zeutschner, whereas now it is possible to propose 29 January 1660 as the date of its first rendition.

In 2005, numerous vertebrate tracks were discovered in carbonate aeolianites in and around the town of Paphos, in the south western part of Cyprus. The main track-bearing exposure is located in a protected archaeological site near the Agia Solomoni Church in side the city of Paphos, where cross-sec tions through tracks are abundant in vertical exposures of the aeolianite along Apostolou Pavlou Avenue. Some exposures show as many as 10 tracks per m2 of vertical exposure. Several additional tracks were found in the extensive subterranean tomb complex, the Tombs of the Kings, just outside Paphos. The aeolian deposit was formed when westerly to southwesterly windsdrove fine- to medium-grained calcareous sand onshore from the beach. This generated low coastal dunes, represented by 1–2-m-thick, cross-bedded sets made up of grainflow and wind-ripple strata, and sand sheets composed entirely of wind-ripple strata. The sediment does not yet have an absolute date, but is considered to be of Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene age, as are many other coastal aeolianites in the Mediterranean area. The Late Pleistocene endemic fauna in Cyprus was limited to the dwarf hippopotamus Phanourios minor Desmarest, 1822, the dwarf elephant Elephas cypriotes Bate, 1902, a small carnivore Genetta plesictoides Bate, 1903, and (possibly) humans. The exposed tracks are 5–15 cm in diameter, with a few tracks up to 23 cm in size. This range of size correlates well with the estimated foot size of dwarf hippopotami and dwarf elephants. This low-diversity, endemic is land fauna provides a unique opportunity to correlate tracks with trackmakers.

The article presents the results of an analysis of marking of palatal l in prints from the source database of Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku (16th-century Polish language dictionary). The analysis takes into account the various conditions of this phenomenon: functional, frequency, contextual, textual, regional and publishing ones. The analysis shows that the rare records of the consonant l’ certified in the papers originated from the spelling of manuscripts. Most often, they appear in printed texts from the first half of the sixteenth century, mainly in the earliest texts and dictionaries, as well as in texts originating from southern Poland and southern Borderlands. Marking of palatal l in printed materials is characterised by a high degree of lexicalisation and dependence on the phonetic context and less dependent on the place of publication.
